[1] When David was living in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I live in a cedar house, but the ark of Yahweh’s covenant is in a tent.” [2] Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart; for God is with you.” [3] That same night, the word of God came to Nathan, saying, [4] “Go and tell David my servant, ‘Yahweh says, “You shall not build me a house to dwell in; [5] for I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought up Israel to this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tent to another. [6] In all places in which I have walked with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ ” ’ [7] “Now therefore, you shall tell my servant David, ‘Yahweh of Armies says, “I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel. [8] I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make you a name like the name of the great ones who are in the earth. [9] I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more. The children of wickedness will not waste them any more, as at the first, [10] and from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover I tell you that Yahweh will build you a house. [11] It will happen, when your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your offspring after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. [12] He will build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. [13] I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will not take my loving kindness away from him, as I took it from him who was before you; [14] but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom forever. His throne will be established forever.” ’ ” [15] According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David. [16] Then David the king went in and sat before Yahweh; and he said, “Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far? [17] This was a small thing in your eyes, O God, but you have spoken of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have respected me according to the standard of a man of high degree, Yahweh God. [18] What can David say yet more to you concerning the honor which is done to your servant? For you know your servant. [19] Yahweh, for your servant’s sake, and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, to make known all these great things. [20] Yahweh, there is no one like you, neither is there any God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. [21] What one nation in the earth is like your people Israel, whom God went to redeem to himself for a people, to make you a name by great and awesome things, in driving out nations from before your people whom you redeemed out of Egypt? [22] For you made your people Israel your own people forever; and you, Yahweh, became their God. [23] Now, Yahweh, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant, and concerning his house, be established forever, and do as you have spoken. [24] Let your name be established and magnified forever, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel. The house of David your servant is established before you.’ [25] For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build him a house. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you. [26] Now, Yahweh, you are God, and have promised this good thing to your servant. [27] Now it has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you; for you, Yahweh, have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”
King James Version
[1] Now it came to pass, as DavidH1732 satH3427(QalPerf) in his house,H1004 that DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) to NathanH5416 the prophet,H5030 Lo, I dwellH3427(QalActPtc) in an houseH1004 of cedars,H730 but the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LordH3068 [remaineth] under curtains.H3407 [2] Then NathanH5416 saidH559(QalImpf) unto David,H1732 DoH6213(QalImpv) all that [is] in thine heart;H3824 for GodH430 [is] with thee. [3] And it came to pass the same night,H3915 that the wordH1697 of GodH430 came to Nathan,H5416 saying,H559(QalInf) [4] GoH3212(QalImpv) and tellH559(QalPerf) DavidH1732 my servant,H5650 Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 Thou shalt not buildH1129(QalImpf) me an houseH1004 to dwell in:H3427(QalInf) [5] For I have not dwelt inH3427(QalPerf) an houseH1004 since the dayH3117 that I brought upH5927(HiphPerf) IsraelH3478 unto this day;H3117 but have gone from tentH168 to tent,H168 and from [one] tabernacleH4908 [to another]. [6] Wheresoever I have walkedH1980(HithPerf) with all Israel,H3478 spakeH1696(PielPerf) I a wordH1697 to anyH259 of the judgesH8199(QalActPtc) of Israel,H3478 whom I commandedH6680(PielPerf) to feedH7462(QalInf) my people,H5971 saying,H559(QalInf) Why have ye not builtH1129(QalPerf) me an houseH1004 of cedars?H730 [7] Now therefore thus shalt thou sayH559(QalImpf) unto my servantH5650 David,H1732 Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 of hosts,H6635 I tookH3947(QalPerf) thee from the sheepcote,H5116 [even] from followingH310 the sheep,H6629 that thou shouldest be rulerH5057 over my peopleH5971 Israel:H3478 [8] And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked,H1980(QalPerf) and have cut offH3772(HiphImpf) all thine enemiesH341(QalActPtc) from beforeH6440 thee, and have madeH6213(QalPerf) thee a nameH8034 like the nameH8034 of the great menH1419 that [are] in the earth.H776 [9] Also I will ordainH7760(QalPerf) a placeH4725 for my peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 and will plantH5193(QalPerf) them, and they shall dwellH7931(QalPerf) in their place, and shall be movedH7264(QalImpf) no more; neither shall the childrenH1121 of wickednessH5766 wasteH1086(PielInf) them any more,H3254(HiphImpf) as at the beginning,H7223 [10] And since the timeH3117 that I commandedH6680(PielPerf) judgesH8199(QalActPtc) [to be] over my peopleH5971 Israel.H3478 Moreover I will subdueH3665(HiphPerf) all thine enemies.H341(QalActPtc) Furthermore I tellH5046(HiphImpf) thee that the LordH3068 will buildH1129(QalImpf) thee an house.H1004 [11] And it shall come to pass, when thy daysH3117 be expiredH4390(QalPerf) that thou must goH3212(QalInf) [to be] with thy fathers,H1 that I will raise upH6965(HiphPerf) thy seedH2233 afterH310 thee, which shall be of thy sons;H1121 and I will establishH3559(HiphPerf) his kingdom.H4438 [12] He shall buildH1129(QalImpf) me an house,H1004 and I will stablishH3559(PolePerf) his throneH3678 forH5704 ever.H5769 [13] I will be his father,H1 and he shall be my son:H1121 and I will not takeH5493 my mercyH2617 awayH5493(HiphImpf) from him, as I tookH5493(HiphPerf) [it] from [him] that was beforeH6440 thee: [14] But I will settleH5975(HiphPerf) him in mine houseH1004 and in my kingdomH4438 for ever:H5769 and his throneH3678 shall be establishedH3559(NiphPtc) forH5704 evermore.H5769 [15] According to all these words,H1697 and according to all this vision,H2377 so did NathanH5416 speakH1696(PielPerf) unto David.H1732 [16] And DavidH1732 the kingH4428 cameH935(QalImpf) and satH3427(QalImpf) beforeH6440 the Lord,H3068 and said,H559(QalImpf) Who [am] I, O LordH3068 God,H430 and what [is] mine house,H1004 that thou hast broughtH935(HiphPerf) me hitherto?H1988 [17] And [yet] this was a small thingH6994(QalImpf) in thine eyes,H5869 O God;H430 for thou hast [also] spokenH1696(PielImpf) of thy servant’sH5650 houseH1004 for a great while to come,H7350 and hast regardedH7200(QalPerf) me according to the estateH8448 of a manH120 of high degree,H4609 O LordH3068 God.H430 [18] What canH3254 DavidH1732 [speak] moreH3254(HiphImpf) to thee for the honourH3519 of thy servant?H5650 for thou knowestH3045(QalPerf) thy servant.H5650 [19] O Lord,H3068 for thy servant’sH5650 sake, and according to thine own heart,H3820 hast thou doneH6213(QalPerf) all this greatness,H1420 in making knownH3045(HiphInf) all [these] great things.H1420 [20] O Lord,H3068 [there is] none like thee, neither [is there any] GodH430 besideH2108 thee, according to all that we have heardH8085(QalPerf) with our ears.H241 [21] And what oneH259 nationH1471 in the earthH776 [is] like thy peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 whom GodH430 wentH1980(QalPerf) to redeemH6299(QalInf) [to be] his own people,H5971 to makeH7760(QalInf) thee a nameH8034 of greatnessH1420 and terribleness,H3372(NiphPtc) by driving outH1644(PielInf) nationsH1471 from beforeH6440 thy people,H5971 whom thou hast redeemedH6299(QalPerf) out of Egypt?H4714 [22] For thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478 didst thou makeH5414(QalImpf) thine own peopleH5971 forH5704 ever;H5769 and thou, Lord,H3068 becamest their God.H430 [23] Therefore now, Lord,H3068 let the thingH1697 that thou hast spokenH1696(PielPerf) concerning thy servantH5650 and concerning his houseH1004 be establishedH539(NiphImpf) forH5704 ever,H5769 and doH6213(QalImpv) as thou hast said.H1696(PielPerf) [24] Let it even be established,H539(NiphImpf) that thy nameH8034 may be magnifiedH1431(QalImpf) forH5704 ever,H5769 saying,H559(QalInf) The LordH3068 of hostsH6635 [is] the GodH430 of Israel,H3478 [even] a GodH430 to Israel:H3478 and [let] the houseH1004 of DavidH1732 thy servantH5650 [be] establishedH3559(NiphPtc) beforeH6440 thee. [25] For thou, O my God,H430 hast toldH1540(QalPerf) thy servantH5650 that thou wilt buildH1129(QalInf) him an house:H1004 therefore thy servantH5650 hath foundH4672(QalPerf) [in his heart] to prayH6419(HithInf) beforeH6440 thee. [26] And now, Lord,H3068 thou art God,H430 and hast promisedH1696(PielImpf) this goodnessH2896 unto thy servant:H5650 [27] Now therefore let it pleaseH2974(HiphPerf) thee to blessH1288(PielInf) the houseH1004 of thy servant,H5650 that it may be beforeH6440 thee for ever:H5769 for thou blessest,H1288(PielPerf) O Lord,H3068 and [it shall be] blessedH1288(PualPtc) for ever.H5769
