[1] Then all Israel gathered themselves to David to Hebron, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. [2] In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. Yahweh your God said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’ ” [3] So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Yahweh. They anointed David king over Israel, according to Yahweh’s word by Samuel. [4] David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (also called Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there. [5] The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here!” Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion. The same is David’s city. [6] David had said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain.” Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and was made chief. [7] David lived in the stronghold; therefore they called it David’s city. [8] He built the city all around, from Millo even around; and Joab repaired the rest of the city. [9] David grew greater and greater, for Yahweh of Armies was with him. [10] Now these are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who showed themselves strong with him in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to Yahweh’s word concerning Israel. [11] This is the number of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty; he lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them at one time. [12] After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men. [13] He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where there was a plot of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines. [14] They stood in the middle of the plot, defended it, and killed the Philistines; and Yahweh saved them by a great victory. [15] Three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the army of the Philistines were encamped in the valley of Rephaim. [16] David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was in Bethlehem at that time. [17] David longed, and said, “Oh, that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!” [18] The three broke through the army of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, took it, and brought it to David; but David would not drink any of it, but poured it out to Yahweh, [19] and said, “My God forbid me, that I should do this! Shall I drink the blood of these men who have put their lives in jeopardy?” For they risked their lives to bring it. Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things. [20] Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the three; for he lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them, and had a name among the three. [21] Of the three, he was more honorable than the two, and was made their captain; however he wasn’t included in the three. [22] Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle of a pit on a snowy day. [23] He killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubitsⓘ high. In the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear. [24] Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did these things and had a name among the three mighty men. [25] Behold, he was more honorable than the thirty, but he didn’t attain to the three; and David set him over his guard. [26] The mighty men of the armies also include Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, [27] Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite, [28] Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite, [29] Sibbecai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite, [30] Maharai the Netophathite, Heled the son of Baanah the Netophathite, [31] Ithai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin, Benaiah the Pirathonite, [32] Hurai of the brooks of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite, [33] Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite, [34] the sons of Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan the son of Shagee the Hararite, [35] Ahiam the son of Sacar the Hararite, Eliphal the son of Ur, [36] Hepher the Mecherathite, Ahijah the Pelonite, [37] Hezro the Carmelite, Naarai the son of Ezbai, [38] Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar the son of Hagri, [39] Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite (the armor bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah), [40] Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, [41] Uriah the Hittite, Zabad the son of Ahlai, [42] Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite (a chief of the Reubenites), and thirty with him, [43] Hanan the son of Maacah, Joshaphat the Mithnite, [44] Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite, [45] Jediael the son of Shimri, and Joha his brother, the Tizite, [46] Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai, and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite, [47] Eliel, Obed, and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

[1] Then all IsraelH3478 gatheredH6908(NiphImpf) themselves to DavidH1732 unto Hebron,H2275 saying,H559(QalInf) Behold, we [are] thy boneH6106 and thy flesh.H1320 [2] And moreover in timeH8543 past,H8032 even when SaulH7586 was king,H4428 thou [wast] he that leddest outH3318(HiphPtc) and broughtest inH935(HiphPtc) Israel:H3478 and the LordH3068 thy GodH430 saidH559(QalImpf) unto thee, Thou shalt feedH7462(QalImpf) my peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 and thou shalt be rulerH5057 over my peopleH1571 Israel.H3478 [3] Therefore cameH935(QalImpf) all the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478 to the kingH4428 to Hebron;H2275 and DavidH1732 madeH3772(QalImpf) a covenantH1285 with them in HebronH2275 beforeH6440 the Lord;H3068 and they anointedH4886(QalImpf) DavidH1732 kingH4428 over Israel,H3478 according to the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 byH3027 Samuel.H8050 [4] And DavidH1732 and all IsraelH3478 wentH3212(QalImpf) to Jerusalem,H3389 which [is] Jebus;H2982 where the JebusitesH2983 [were], the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of the land.H776 [5] And the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of JebusH2982 saidH559(QalImpf) to David,H1732 Thou shalt not comeH935(QalImpf) hither. Nevertheless DavidH1732 tookH3920(QalImpf) the castleH4686 of Zion,H6726 which [is] the cityH5892 of David.H1732 [6] And DavidH1732 said,H559(QalImpf) Whosoever smitethH5221(HiphPtc) the JebusitesH2983 firstH7223 shall be chiefH7218 and captain.H8269 So JoabH3097 the sonH1121 of ZeruiahH6870 wentH5927 firstH7223 up,H5927(QalImpf) and was chief.H7218 [7] And DavidH1732 dweltH3427(QalImpf) in the castle;H4679 therefore they calledH7121(QalPerf) it the cityH5892 of David.H1732 [8] And he builtH1129(QalImpf) the cityH5892 round about,H5439 even from MilloH4407 round about:H5439 and JoabH3097 repairedH2421(PielImpf) the restH7605 of the city.H5892 [9] So DavidH1732 waxedH3212(QalImpf) greaterH1980(QalInf) and greater:H1419 for the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 [was] with him. [10] These also [are] the chiefH7218 of the mighty menH1368 whom DavidH1732 had, who strengthenedH2388(HithPtc) themselves with him in his kingdom,H4438 [and] with all Israel,H3478 to make him king,H4427(HiphInf) according to the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 concerning Israel.H3478 [11] And this [is] the numberH4557 of the mighty menH1368 whom DavidH1732 had; Jashobeam,H3434 an Hachmonite,H2453 the chiefH7218 of the captains:H7991(Qere) he lifted upH5782(PolePerf) his spearH2595 against threeH7969 hundredH3967 slainH2491 [by him] at oneH259 time.H6471 [12] And afterH310 him [was] EleazarH499 the sonH1121 of Dodo,H1734 the Ahohite,H266 who [was one] of the threeH7969 mighties.H1368 [13] He was with DavidH1732 at Pasdammim,H6450 and there the PhilistinesH6430 were gathered togetherH622(NiphPerf) to battle,H4421 where was a parcelH2513 of groundH7704 fullH4392 of barley;H8184 and the peopleH5971 fledH5127(QalPerf) from beforeH6440 the Philistines.H6430 [14] And they setH3320(HithImpf) themselves in the midstH8432 of [that] parcel,H2513 and deliveredH5337(HiphImpf) it, and slewH5221(HiphImpf) the Philistines;H6430 and the LordH3068 savedH3467(HiphImpf) [them] by a greatH1419 deliverance.H8668 [15] Now threeH7969 of the thirtyH7970 captainsH7218 went downH3381(QalImpf) to the rockH6697 to David,H1732 into the caveH4631 of Adullam;H5725 and the hostH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 encampedH2583(QalActPtc) in the valleyH6010 of Rephaim.H7497 [16] And DavidH1732 [was] then in the hold,H4686 and the Philistines’H6430 garrisonH5333 [was] then at Bethlehem.H1035 [17] And DavidH1732 longed,H183(HithImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) Oh that one would give me drinkH8248(HiphImpf) of the waterH4325 of the wellH953 of Bethlehem,H1035 that [is] at the gate!H8179 [18] And the threeH7969 brake throughH1234(QalImpf) the hostH4264 of the Philistines,H6430 and drewH7579(QalImpf) waterH4325 out of the wellH953 of Bethlehem,H1035 that [was] by the gate,H8179 and tookH5375(QalImpf) [it], and broughtH935(HiphImpf) [it] to David:H1732 but DavidH1732 wouldH14(QalPerf) not drinkH8354(QalInf) [of] it, but poured it outH5258(PielImpf) to the Lord,H3068 [19] And said,H559(QalImpf) My GodH430 forbidH2486 it me, that I should doH6213(QalInf) this thing:H2063 shall I drinkH8354(QalImpf) the bloodH1818 of these menH582 that have put their lives in jeopardy?H5315 for with [the jeopardy of] their livesH5315 they broughtH935(HiphPerf) it. Therefore he wouldH14(QalPerf) not drinkH8354(QalInf) it. These things didH6213(QalPerf) these threeH7969 mightiest.H1368 [20] And AbishaiH52 the brotherH251 of Joab,H3097 he was chiefH7218 of the three:H7969 for lifting upH5782(PolePerf) his spearH2595 against threeH7969 hundred,H3967 he slewH2491 [them], and had a nameH8034 among the three.H7969 [21] Of the three,H7969 he was more honourableH3513(NiphPtc) than the two;H8147 for he was their captain:H8269 howbeit he attainedH935(QalPerf) not to the [first] three.H7969 [22] BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of Jehoiada,H3077 the sonH1121 of a valiantH2428 manH376 of Kabzeel,H6909 who had done manyH7227 acts;H6467 he slewH5221(HiphPerf) twoH8147 lionlike menH739 of Moab:H4124 also he went downH3381(QalPerf) and slewH5221(HiphPerf) a lionH738 inH8432 a pitH953 in a snowyH7950 day.H3117 [23] And he slewH5221(HiphPerf) an Egyptian,H4713 a manH376 of [great] stature,H4060 fiveH2568 cubitsH520 high; and in the Egyptian’sH4713 handH3027 [was] a spearH2595 like a weaver’sH707(QalActPtc) beam;H4500 and he went downH3381(QalImpf) to him with a staff,H7626 and pluckedH1497(QalImpf) the spearH2595 out of the Egyptian’sH4713 hand,H3027 and slewH2026(QalImpf) him with his own spear.H2595 [24] These [things] didH6213(QalPerf) BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of Jehoiada,H3077 and had the nameH8034 among the threeH7969 mighties.H1368 [25] Behold,H2009 he was honourableH3513(NiphPtc) among the thirty,H7970 but attainedH935(QalPerf) not to the [first] three:H7969 and DavidH1732 setH7760(QalImpf) him over his guard.H4928 [26] Also the valiant menH1368 of the armiesH2428 [were], AsahelH6214 the brotherH251 of Joab,H3097 ElhananH445 the sonH1121 of DodoH1734 of Bethlehem,H1035 [27] ShammothH8054 the Harorite,H2033 HelezH2503 the Pelonite,H6397 [28] IraH5896 the sonH1121 of IkkeshH6142 the Tekoite,H8621 AbiezerH44 the Antothite,H6069 [29] SibbecaiH5444 the Hushathite,H2843 IlaiH5866 the Ahohite,H266 [30] MaharaiH4121 the Netophathite,H5200 HeledH2466 the sonH1121 of BaanahH1196 the Netophathite,H5200 [31] IthaiH863 the sonH1121 of RibaiH7380 of Gibeah,H1390 [that pertained] to the childrenH1121 of Benjamin,H1144 BenaiahH1141 the Pirathonite,H6553 [32] HuraiH2360 of the brooksH5158 of Gaash,H1608 AbielH22 the Arbathite,H6164 [33] AzmavethH5820 the Baharumite,H978 EliahbaH455 the Shaalbonite,H8170 [34] The sonsH1121 of HashemH2044 the Gizonite,H1493 JonathanH3129 the sonH1121 of ShageH7681 the Hararite,H2043 [35] AhiamH279 the sonH1121 of SacarH7940 the Hararite,H2043 EliphalH465 the sonH1121 of Ur,H218 [36] HepherH2660 the Mecherathite,H4382 AhijahH281 the Pelonite,H6397 [37] HezroH2695 the Carmelite,H3761 NaaraiH5293 the sonH1121 of Ezbai,H229 [38] JoelH3100 the brotherH251 of Nathan,H5416 MibharH4006 the sonH1121 of Haggeri,H1905 [39] ZelekH6768 the Ammonite,H5984 NaharaiH5171 the Berothite,H1307 the armourbearerH5375(QalActPtc) of JoabH3097 the sonH1121 of Zeruiah,H6870 [40] IraH5896 the Ithrite,H3505 GarebH1619 the Ithrite,H3505 [41] UriahH223 the Hittite,H2850 ZabadH2066 the sonH1121 of Ahlai,H304 [42] AdinaH5721 the sonH1121 of ShizaH7877 the Reubenite,H7206 a captainH7218 of the Reubenites,H7206 and thirtyH7970 with him, [43] HananH2605 the sonH1121 of Maachah,H4601 and JoshaphatH3146 the Mithnite,H4981 [44] UzziaH5814 the Ashterathite,H6254 ShamaH8091 and JehielH3273 the sonsH1121 of HothanH2369 the Aroerite,H6200 [45] JediaelH3043 the sonH1121 of Shimri,H8113 and JohaH3109 his brother,H251 the Tizite,H8491 [46] ElielH447 the Mahavite,H4233 and Jeribai,H3403 and Joshaviah,H3145 the sonsH1121 of Elnaam,H493 and IthmahH3495 the Moabite,H4125 [47] Eliel,H447 and Obed,H5744 and JasielH3300 the Mesobaite.H4677
