[1] The sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “See now, the place where we live and meet with you is too small for us. [2] Please let us go to the Jordan, and each man take a beam from there, and let’s make us a place there, where we may live.”He answered, “Go!” [3] One said, “Please be pleased to go with your servants.”He answered, “I will go.” [4] So he went with them. When they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood. [5] But as one was cutting down a tree, the ax head fell into the water. Then he cried out and said, “Alas, my master! For it was borrowed.” [6] The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” He showed him the place. He cut down a stick, threw it in there, and made the iron float. [7] He said, “Take it.” So he put out his hand and took it. [8] Now the king of Syria was at war against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, “My camp will be in such and such a place.” [9] The man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, “Beware that you not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there.” [10] The king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he saved himself there, not once or twice. [11] The king of Syria’s heart was very troubled about this. He called his servants, and said to them, “Won’t you show me which of us is for the king of Israel?” [12] One of his servants said, “No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.” [13] He said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him.”He was told, “Behold, he is in Dothan.” [14] Therefore he sent horses, chariots, and a great army there. They came by night and surrounded the city. [15] When the servant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. His servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” [16] He answered, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” [17] Elisha prayed, and said, “Yahweh, please open his eyes, that he may see.” Yahweh opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha. [18] When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please strike this people with blindness.”He struck them with blindness according to Elisha’s word. [19] Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, neither is this the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” He led them to Samaria. [20] When they had come into Samaria, Elisha said, “Yahweh, open these men’s eyes, that they may see.”Yahweh opened their eyes, and they saw; and behold, they were in the middle of Samaria. [21] The king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them, “My father, shall I strike them? Shall I strike them?” [22] He answered, “You shall not strike them. Would you strike those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, then go to their master.” [23] He prepared a great feast for them. After they ate and drank, he sent them away and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria stopped raiding the land of Israel. [24] After this, Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria. [25] There was a great famine in Samaria. Behold, they besieged it until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver. [26] As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!” [27] He said, “If Yahweh doesn’t help you, where could I get help for you? From the threshing floor, or from the wine press?” [28] Then the king asked her, “What is your problem?”She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’ [29] So we boiled my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him;’ and she has hidden her son.” [30] When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes. Now he was passing by on the wall, and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth underneath on his body. [31] Then he said, “God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat stays on him today.” [32] But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Then the king sent a man from before him; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, “Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Behold, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold the door shut against him. Isn’t the sound of his master’s feet behind him?” [33] While he was still talking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him. Then he said, “Behold, this evil is from Yahweh. Why should I wait for Yahweh any longer?”

[1] And the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 saidH559(QalImpf) untoH6440 Elisha,H477 Behold now, the placeH4725 where we dwellH3427(QalActPtc) with thee is too straitH6862 for us. [2] Let us go,H3212(QalImpf) we pray thee, unto Jordan,H3383 and takeH3947(QalImpf) thence every manH376 aH259 beam,H6982 and let us makeH6213(QalImpf) us a placeH4725 there, where we may dwell.H3427(QalInf) And he answered,H559(QalImpf) GoH3212(QalImpv) ye. [3] And oneH259 said,H559(QalImpf) Be content,H2974(HiphImpv) I pray thee, and goH3212(QalImpv) with thy servants.H5650 And he answered,H559(QalImpf) I will go.H3212(QalImpf) [4] So he wentH3212(QalImpf) with them. And when they cameH935(QalImpf) to Jordan,H3383 they cut downH1504(QalImpf) wood.H6086 [5] But as oneH259 was fellingH5307(HiphPtc) a beam,H6982 the axe headH1270 fellH5307(QalPerf) into the water:H4325 and he cried,H6817(QalImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) Alas,H162 master!H113 for it was borrowed.H7592(QalPasPtc) [6] And the manH376 of GodH430 said,H559(QalImpf) WhereH575 fellH5307(QalPerf) it? And he shewedH7200(HiphImpf) him the place.H4725 And he cut downH7094(QalImpf) a stick,H6086 and castH7993(HiphImpf) [it] in thither; and the ironH1270 did swim.H6687(HiphImpf) [7] Therefore saidH559(QalImpf) he, Take [it] upH7311(HiphImpv) to thee. And he put outH7971(QalImpf) his hand,H3027 and tookH3947(QalImpf) it. [8] Then the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 warredH3898(NiphPtc) against Israel,H3478 and took counselH3289(NiphImpf) with his servants,H5650 saying,H559(QalInf) In suchH6423 and suchH492 a placeH4725 [shall be] my camp.H8466 [9] And the manH376 of GodH430 sentH7971(QalImpf) unto the kingH4428 of Israel,H3478 saying,H559(QalInf) BewareH8104(NiphImpv) that thou passH5674(QalInf) not suchH2088 a place;H4725 for thither the SyriansH758 are come down.H5185 [10] And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 sentH7971(QalImpf) to the placeH4725 which the manH376 of GodH430 toldH559(QalPerf) him and warnedH2094(HiphPerf) him of, and savedH8104(NiphPerf) himself there, not onceH259 nor twice.H8147 [11] Therefore the heartH3820 of the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 was sore troubledH5590(NiphImpf) for this thing;H1697 and he calledH7121(QalImpf) his servants,H5650 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Will ye not shewH5046(HiphImpf) me which of us [is] for the kingH4428 of Israel?H3478 [12] And oneH259 of his servantsH5650 said,H559(QalImpf) None, my lord,H113 O king:H4428 but Elisha,H477 the prophetH5030 that [is] in Israel,H3478 tellethH5046(HiphImpf) the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 the wordsH1697 that thou speakestH1696(PielImpf) in thy bedchamber.H2315 [13] And he said,H559(QalImpf) GoH3212(QalImpv) and spyH7200(QalImpv) whereH351 he [is], that I may sendH7971(QalImpf) and fetchH3947(QalImpf) him. And it was toldH5046(HophImpf) him, saying,H559(QalInf) Behold, [he is] in Dothan.H1886 [14] Therefore sentH7971(QalImpf) he thither horses,H5483 and chariots,H7393 and a greatH3515 host:H2428 and they cameH935(QalImpf) by night,H3915 and compassedH5362 the cityH5892 about.H5362(HiphImpf) [15] And when the servantH8334(PielPtc) of the manH376 of GodH430 was risenH6965(QalInf) early,H7925(HiphImpf) and gone forth,H3318(QalImpf) behold, an hostH2428 compassedH5437(QalActPtc) the cityH5892 both with horsesH5483 and chariots.H7393 And his servantH5288 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Alas,H162 my master!H113 how shall we do?H6213(QalImpf) [16] And he answered,H559(QalImpf) FearH3372(QalImpf) not: for they that [be] with us [are] moreH7227 than they that [be] with them. [17] And ElishaH477 prayed,H6419(HithImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) Lord,H3068 I pray thee, openH6491(QalImpv) his eyes,H5869 that he may see.H7200(QalImpf) And the LordH3068 openedH6491(QalImpf) the eyesH5869 of the young man;H5288 and he saw:H7200(QalImpf) and, behold, the mountainH2022 [was] fullH4390(QalPerf) of horsesH5483 and chariotsH7393 of fireH784 round aboutH5439 Elisha.H477 [18] And when they came downH3381(QalImpf) to him, ElishaH477 prayedH6419(HithImpf) unto the Lord,H3068 and said,H559(QalImpf) SmiteH5221(HiphImpv) this people,H1471 I pray thee, with blindness.H5575 And he smoteH5221(HiphImpf) them with blindnessH5575 according to the wordH1697 of Elisha.H477 [19] And ElishaH477 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, This [is] not the way,H1870 neither [is] thisH2090 the city:H5892 followH3212(QalImpv) me, and I will bringH3212(HiphImpf) you to the manH376 whom ye seek.H1245(PielImpf) But he ledH3212(HiphImpf) them to Samaria.H8111 [20] And it came to pass, when they were comeH935(QalInf) into Samaria,H8111 that ElishaH477 said,H559(QalImpf) Lord,H3068 openH6491(QalImpv) the eyesH5869 of these [men], that they may see.H7200(QalImpf) And the LordH3068 openedH6491(QalImpf) their eyes,H5869 and they saw;H7200(QalImpf) and, behold, [they were] in the midstH8432 of Samaria.H8111 [21] And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Elisha,H477 when he sawH7200(QalInf) them, My father,H1 shall I smiteH5221(HiphImpf) [them]? shall I smiteH5221(HiphImpf) [them]? [22] And he answered,H559(QalImpf) Thou shalt not smiteH5221(HiphImpf) [them]: wouldest thou smiteH5221(HiphPtc) those whom thou hast taken captiveH7617(QalPerf) with thy swordH2719 and with thy bow?H7198 setH7760(QalImpv) breadH3899 and waterH4325 beforeH6440 them, that they may eatH398(QalImpf) and drink,H8354(QalImpf) and goH3212(QalImpf) to their master.H113 [23] And he preparedH3739(QalImpf) greatH1419 provisionH3740 for them: and when they had eatenH398(QalImpf) and drunk,H8354(QalImpf) he sent them away,H7971(PielImpf) and they wentH3212(QalImpf) to their master.H113 So the bandsH1416 of SyriaH758 cameH935(QalInf) no moreH3254(QalPerf) into the landH776 of Israel.H3478 [24] And it came to pass after this,H310 that BenhadadH1130 kingH4428 of SyriaH758 gatheredH6908(QalImpf) all his host,H4264 and went up,H5927(QalImpf) and besiegedH6696(QalImpf) Samaria.H8111 [25] And there was a greatH1419 famineH7458 in Samaria:H8111 and, behold, they besiegedH6696(QalActPtc) it, until an ass’sH2543 headH7218 was [sold] for fourscoreH8084 [pieces] of silver,H3701 and the fourth partH7255 of a cabH6894 of dove’s dungH1686(Qere) for fiveH2568 [pieces] of silver.H3701 [26] And as the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 was passing byH5674(QalActPtc) upon the wall,H2346 there criedH6817(QalPerf) a womanH802 unto him, saying,H559(QalInf) Help,H3467(HiphImpv) my lord,H113 O king.H4428 [27] And he said,H559(QalImpf) If the LordH3068 do not helpH3467(HiphImpf) thee, whenceH370 shall I helpH3467(HiphImpf) thee? out of the barnfloor,H1637 or out of the winepress?H3342 [28] And the kingH4428 saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered,H559(QalImpf) This womanH802 saidH559(QalPerf) unto me, GiveH5414(QalImpv) thy son,H1121 that we may eatH398(QalImpf) him to day,H3117 and we will eatH398(QalImpf) my sonH1121 to morrow.H4279 [29] So we boiledH1310(PielImpf) my son,H1121 and did eatH398(QalImpf) him: and I saidH559(QalImpf) unto her on the nextH312 day,H3117 GiveH5414(QalImpv) thy son,H1121 that we may eatH398(QalImpf) him: and she hath hidH2244(HiphImpf) her son.H1121 [30] And it came to pass, when the kingH4428 heardH8085(QalInf) the wordsH1697 of the woman,H802 that he rentH7167(QalImpf) his clothes;H899 and he passed byH5674(QalActPtc) upon the wall,H2346 and the peopleH5971 looked,H7200(QalImpf) and, behold, [he had] sackclothH8242 withinH1004 upon his flesh.H1320 [31] Then he said,H559(QalImpf) GodH430 doH6213(QalImpf) so and moreH3254(HiphImpf) also to me, if the headH7218 of ElishaH477 the sonH1121 of ShaphatH8202 shall standH5975(QalImpf) on him this day.H3117 [32] But ElishaH477 satH3427(QalActPtc) in his house,H1004 and the eldersH2205 satH3427(QalActPtc) with him; and [the king] sentH7971(QalImpf) a manH376 from beforeH6440 him: but ere the messengerH4397 cameH935(QalImpf) to him, he saidH559(QalPerf) to the elders,H2205 SeeH7200(QalPerf) ye how this sonH1121 of a murdererH7523(PielPtc) hath sentH7971(QalPerf) to take awayH5493(HiphInf) mine head?H7218 look,H7200(QalImpv) when the messengerH4397 cometh,H935(QalInf) shutH5462(QalImpv) the door,H1817 and hold him fastH3905(QalPerf) at the door:H1817 [is] not the soundH6963 of his master’sH113 feetH7272 behindH310 him? [33] And while he yet talkedH1696(PielPtc) with them, behold, the messengerH4397 came downH3381(QalActPtc) unto him: and he said,H559(QalImpf) Behold, this evilH7451 [is] of the Lord;H3068 what should I waitH3176(HiphImpf) for the LordH3068 any longer?
