[1] In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria for seventeen years. [2] He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin. He didn’t depart from it. [3] Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael, continually. [4] Jehoahaz begged Yahweh, and Yahweh listened to him; for he saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Syria oppressed them. [5] (Yahweh gave Israel a savior, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians; and the children of Israel lived in their tents as before. [6] Nevertheless they didn’t depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, with which he made Israel to sin, but walked in them; and the Asherah also remained in Samaria.) [7] For he didn’t leave to Jehoahaz of the people any more than fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Syria destroyed them and made them like the dust in threshing. [8] Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? [9] Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria; and Joash his son reigned in his place. [10] In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz began to reign over Israel in Samaria for sixteen years. [11] He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight. He didn’t depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin; but he walked in them. [12] Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and his might with which he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? [13] Joash slept with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat on his throne. Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. [14] Now Elisha became sick with the illness of which he died; and Joash the king of Israel came down to him, and wept over him, and said, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” [15] Elisha said to him, “Take bow and arrows;” and he took bow and arrows for himself. [16] He said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow;” and he put his hand on it. Elisha laid his hands on the king’s hands. [17] He said, “Open the window eastward;” and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot!” and he shot. He said, “Yahweh’s arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory over Syria; for you will strike the Syrians in Aphek until you have consumed them.” [18] He said, “Take the arrows;” and he took them. He said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground;” and he struck three times, and stopped. [19] The man of God was angry with him, and said, “You should have struck five or six times. Then you would have struck Syria until you had consumed it, but now you will strike Syria just three times.” [20] Elisha died, and they buried him.Now the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year. [21] As they were burying a man, behold, they saw a band of raiders; and they threw the man into Elisha’s tomb. As soon as the man touched Elisha’s bones, he revived, and stood up on his feet. [22] Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. [23] But Yahweh was gracious to them, and had compassion on them, and favored them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them and he didn’t cast them from his presence as yet. [24] Hazael king of Syria died; and Benhadad his son reigned in his place. [25] Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Joash struck him three times, and recovered the cities of Israel.

[1] In the threeH7969 and twentiethH6242 yearH8141 of JoashH3101 the sonH1121 of AhaziahH274 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 JehoahazH3059 the sonH1121 of JehuH3058 began to reignH4427(QalPerf) over IsraelH3478 in Samaria,H8111 [and reigned] seventeenH7651 years.H8141 [2] And he didH6213(QalImpf) [that which was] evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the Lord,H3068 and followedH3212(QalImpf) the sinsH2403 of JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of Nebat,H5028 which made IsraelH3478 to sin;H2398(HiphPerf) he departedH5493(QalPerf) not therefrom. [3] And the angerH639 of the LordH3068 was kindledH2734(QalImpf) against Israel,H3478 and he deliveredH5414(QalImpf) them into the handH3027 of HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of Syria,H758 and into the handH3027 of BenhadadH1130 the sonH1121 of Hazael,H2371 all [their] days.H3117 [4] And JehoahazH3059 besoughtH2470(PielImpf) the Lord,H3068 and the LordH3068 hearkenedH8085(QalImpf) untoH6440 him: for he sawH7200(QalPerf) the oppressionH3906 of Israel,H3478 because the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 oppressedH3905(QalPerf) them. [5] (And the LordH3068 gaveH5414(QalImpf) IsraelH3478 a saviour,H3467(HiphPtc) so that they went outH3318(QalImpf) from under the handH3027 of the Syrians:H758 and the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 dweltH3427(QalImpf) in their tents,H168 as beforetime.H8032 [6] Nevertheless they departedH5493(QalPerf) not from the sinsH2403 of the houseH1004 of Jeroboam,H3379 who made IsraelH3478 sin,H2398(HiphPerf) [but] walkedH1980(QalPerf) therein: and there remainedH5975(QalPerf) the groveH842 also in Samaria.H8111) [7] Neither did he leaveH7604(HiphPerf) of the peopleH5971 to JehoahazH3059 but fiftyH2572 horsemen,H6571 and tenH6235 chariots,H7393 and tenH6235 thousandH505 footmen;H7273 for the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 had destroyedH6(PielPerf) them, and had madeH7760(QalImpf) them like the dustH6083 by threshing.H1758(QalInf) [8] Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of Jehoahaz,H3059 and all that he did,H6213(QalPerf) and his might,H1369 [are] they not writtenH3789(QalPasPtc) in the bookH5612 of the chroniclesH1697 of the kingsH4428 of Israel?H3478 [9] And JehoahazH3059 sleptH7901(QalImpf) with his fathers;H1 and they buriedH6912(QalImpf) him in Samaria:H8111 and JoashH3101 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead. [10] In the thirtyH7970 and seventhH7651 yearH8141 of JoashH3101 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 began JehoashH3060 the sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 to reignH4427(QalPerf) over IsraelH3478 in Samaria,H8111 [and reigned] sixteenH8337 years.H8141 [11] And he didH6213(QalImpf) [that which was] evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the Lord;H3068 he departedH5493(QalPerf) not from all the sinsH2403 of JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of Nebat,H5028 who made IsraelH3478 sin:H2398(HiphPerf) [but] he walkedH1980(QalPerf) therein. [12] And the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of Joash,H3101 and all that he did,H6213(QalPerf) and his mightH1369 wherewith he foughtH3898(NiphPerf) against AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of Judah,H3063 [are] they not writtenH3789(QalPasPtc) in the bookH5612 of the chroniclesH1697 of the kingsH4428 of Israel?H3478 [13] And JoashH3101 sleptH7901(QalImpf) with his fathers;H1 and JeroboamH3379 satH3427(QalPerf) upon his throne:H3678 and JoashH3101 was buriedH6912(NiphImpf) in SamariaH8111 with the kingsH4428 of Israel.H3478 [14] Now ElishaH477 was fallen sickH2470(QalPerf) of his sicknessH2483 whereof he died.H4191(QalImpf) And JoashH3101 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 came downH3381(QalImpf) unto him, and weptH1058(QalImpf) over his face,H6440 and said,H559(QalImpf) O my father,H1 my father,H1 the chariotH7393 of Israel,H3478 and the horsemenH6571 thereof. [15] And ElishaH477 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, TakeH3947(QalImpv) bowH7198 and arrows.H2671 And he tookH3947(QalImpf) unto him bowH7198 and arrows.H2671 [16] And he saidH559(QalImpf) to the kingH4428 of Israel,H3478 PutH7392(HiphImpv) thine handH3027 upon the bow.H7198 And he putH7392(HiphImpf) his handH3027 [upon it]: and ElishaH477 putH7760(QalImpf) his handsH3027 upon the king’sH4428 hands.H3027 [17] And he said,H559(QalImpf) OpenH6605(QalImpv) the windowH2474 eastward.H6924 And he openedH6605(QalImpf) [it]. Then ElishaH477 said,H559(QalImpf) Shoot.H3384(QalImpv) And he shot.H3384(HiphImpf) And he said,H559(QalImpf) The arrowH2671 of the Lord’sH3068 deliverance,H8668 and the arrowH2671 of deliveranceH8668 from Syria:H758 for thou shalt smiteH5221(HiphPerf) the SyriansH758 in Aphek,H663 till thou have consumedH3615(PielInf) [them]. [18] And he said,H559(QalImpf) TakeH3947(QalImpv) the arrows.H2671 And he tookH3947(QalImpf) [them]. And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto the kingH4428 of Israel,H3478 SmiteH5221(HiphImpv) upon the ground.H776 And he smoteH5221(HiphImpf) thrice,H7969 and stayed.H5975(QalImpf) [19] And the manH376 of GodH430 was wrothH7107(QalImpf) with him, and said,H559(QalImpf) Thou shouldest have smittenH5221(HiphInf) fiveH2568 or sixH8337 times;H6471 then hadst thou smittenH5221(HiphPerf) SyriaH758 till thou hadst consumedH3615(PielInf) [it]: whereas now thou shalt smiteH5221(HiphImpf) SyriaH758 [but] thrice.H7969 [20] And ElishaH477 died,H4191(QalImpf) and they buriedH6912(QalImpf) him. And the bandsH1416 of the MoabitesH4124 invadedH935(QalImpf) the landH776 at the coming inH935(QalActPtc) of the year.H8141 [21] And it came to pass, as they were buryingH6912(QalActPtc) a man,H376 that, behold, they spiedH7200(QalPerf) a bandH1416 [of men]; and they castH7993(HiphImpf) the manH376 into the sepulchreH6913 of Elisha:H477 and when the manH376 was let down,H3212(QalImpf) and touchedH5060(QalImpf) the bonesH6106 of Elisha,H477 he revived,H2421(QalImpf) and stood upH6965(QalImpf) on his feet.H7272 [22] But HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of SyriaH758 oppressedH3905(QalPerf) IsraelH3478 all the daysH3117 of Jehoahaz.H3059 [23] And the LordH3068 was graciousH2603(QalImpf) unto them, and had compassionH7355(PielImpf) on them, and had respectH6437(QalImpf) unto them, because ofH4616 his covenantH1285 with Abraham,H85 Isaac,H3327 and Jacob,H3290 and wouldH14(QalPerf) not destroyH7843(HiphInf) them, neither castH7993(HiphPerf) he them from his presenceH6440 as yet.H5704 [24] So HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of SyriaH758 died;H4191(QalImpf) and BenhadadH1130 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead. [25] And JehoashH3060 the sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 tookH3947(QalImpf) againH7725(QalImpf) out of the handH3027 of BenhadadH1130 the sonH1121 of HazaelH2371 the cities,H5892 which he had takenH3947(QalPerf) out of the handH3027 of JehoahazH3059 his fatherH1 by war.H4421 ThreeH7969 timesH6471 did JoashH3101 beatH5221(HiphPerf) him, and recoveredH7725(HiphImpf) the citiesH5892 of Israel.H3478
