[1] When King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into Yahweh’s house. [2] He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. [3] They said to him, “Hezekiah says, ‘Today is a day of trouble, of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them. [4] It may be Yahweh your God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’ ” [5] So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. [6] Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master this: ‘Yahweh says, “Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. [7] Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he will hear news, and will return to his own land. I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.” ’ ” [8] So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish. [9] When he heard it said of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “Behold, he has come out to fight against you,” he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, [10] “Tell Hezekiah king of Judah this: ‘Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. [11] Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Will you be delivered? [12] Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed—Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the children of Eden who were in Telassar? [13] Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?’ ” [14] Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to Yahweh’s house, and spread it before Yahweh. [15] Hezekiah prayed before Yahweh, and said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, who are enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. [16] Incline your ear, Yahweh, and hear. Open your eyes, Yahweh, and see. Hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to defy the living God. [17] Truly, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, [18] and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them. [19] Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Yahweh, are God alone.” [20] Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says ‘You have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, and I have heard you. [21] This is the word that Yahweh has spoken concerning him: ‘The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you. [22] Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel! [23] By your messengers, you have defied the Lord, and have said, “With the multitude of my chariots, I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon, and I will cut down its tall cedars and its choice cypress trees; and I will enter into his farthest lodging place, the forest of his fruitful field. [24] I have dug and drunk strange waters, and I will dry up all the rivers of Egypt with the sole of my feet.” [25] Haven’t you heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, that it should be yours to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps. [26] Therefore their inhabitants had little power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops and like grain blasted before it has grown up. [27] But I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your raging against me. [28] Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.’ [29] “This will be the sign to you: This year, you will eat that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from that; and in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards and eat their fruit. [30] The remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah will again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. [31] For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go out, and out of Mount Zion those who shall escape. Yahweh’s zeal will perform this. [32] “Therefore Yahweh says concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there. He will not come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it. [33] He will return the same way that he came, and he will not come to this city,’ says Yahweh. [34] ‘For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for my servant David’s sake.’ ” [35] That night, Yahweh’s angel went out and struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. [36] So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, went home, and lived at Nineveh. [37] As he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.

[1] And it came to pass, when kingH4428 HezekiahH2396 heardH8085(QalInf) [it], that he rentH7167(QalImpf) his clothes,H899 and coveredH3680(HithImpf) himself with sackcloth,H8242 and wentH935(QalImpf) into the houseH1004 of the Lord.H3068 [2] And he sentH7971(QalImpf) Eliakim,H471 which [was] over the household,H1004 and ShebnaH7644 the scribe,H5608(QalActPtc) and the eldersH2205 of the priests,H3548 coveredH3680(HithPtc) with sackcloth,H8242 to IsaiahH3470 the prophetH5030 the sonH1121 of Amoz.H531 [3] And they saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Thus saithH559(QalPerf) Hezekiah,H2396 This dayH3117 [is] a dayH3117 of trouble,H6869 and of rebuke,H8433 and blasphemy:H5007 for the childrenH1121 are comeH935(QalPerf) to the birth,H4866 and [there is] not strengthH3581 to bring forth.H3205(QalInf) [4] It may beH194 the LordH3068 thy GodH430 will hearH8085(QalImpf) all the wordsH1697 of Rabshakeh,H7262 whom the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 his masterH113 hath sentH7971(QalPerf) to reproachH2778(PielInf) the livingH2416 God;H430 and will reproveH3198(HiphPerf) the wordsH1697 which the LordH3068 thy GodH430 hath heard:H8085(QalPerf) wherefore lift upH5375(QalPerf) [thy] prayerH8605 for the remnantH7611 that are left.H4672(NiphPtc) [5] So the servantsH5650 of kingH4428 HezekiahH2396 cameH935(QalImpf) to Isaiah.H3470 [6] And IsaiahH3470 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Thus shall ye sayH559(QalImpf) to your master,H113 Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 Be not afraidH3372(QalImpf) ofH6440 the wordsH1697 which thou hast heard,H8085(QalPerf) with which the servantsH5288 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 have blasphemedH1442(PielPerf) me. [7] Behold, I will sendH5414(QalActPtc) a blastH7307 upon him, and he shall hearH8085(QalPerf) a rumour,H8052 and shall returnH7725(QalPerf) to his own land;H776 and I will cause him to fallH5307(HiphPerf) by the swordH2719 in his own land.H776 [8] So RabshakehH7262 returned,H7725(QalImpf) and foundH4672(QalImpf) the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 warringH3898(NiphPtc) against Libnah:H3841 for he had heardH8085(QalPerf) that he was departedH5265(QalPerf) from Lachish.H3923 [9] And when he heardH8085(QalImpf) sayH559(QalInf) of TirhakahH8640 kingH4428 of Ethiopia,H3568 Behold, he is come outH3318(QalPerf) to fightH3898(NiphInf) against thee: he sentH7971(QalImpf) messengersH4397 againH7725(QalImpf) unto Hezekiah,H2396 saying,H559(QalInf) [10] Thus shall ye speakH559(QalImpf) to HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of Judah,H3063 saying,H559(QalInf) Let not thy GodH430 in whom thou trustestH982(QalActPtc) deceiveH5377(HiphImpf) thee, saying,H559(QalInf) JerusalemH3389 shall not be deliveredH5414(NiphImpf) into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of Assyria.H804 [11] Behold, thou hast heardH8085(QalPerf) what the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 have doneH6213(QalPerf) to all lands,H776 by destroying them utterly:H2763(HiphInf) and shalt thou be delivered?H5337(NiphImpf) [12] Have the godsH430 of the nationsH1471 deliveredH5337(HiphPerf) them which my fathersH1 have destroyed;H7843(PielPerf) [as] Gozan,H1470 and Haran,H2771 and Rezeph,H7530 and the childrenH1121 of EdenH5729 which [were] in Thelasar?H8515 [13] Where [is] the kingH4428 of Hamath,H2574 and the kingH4428 of Arpad,H774 and the kingH4428 of the cityH5892 of Sepharvaim,H5617 of Hena,H2012 and Ivah?H5755 [14] And HezekiahH2396 receivedH3947(QalImpf) the letterH5612 of the handH3027 of the messengers,H4397 and readH7121(QalImpf) it: and HezekiahH2396 went upH5927(QalImpf) into the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 and spreadH6566(QalImpf) it beforeH6440 the Lord.H3068 [15] And HezekiahH2396 prayedH6419(HithImpf) beforeH6440 the Lord,H3068 and said,H559(QalImpf) O LordH3068 GodH430 of Israel,H3478 which dwellestH3427(QalActPtc) [between] the cherubims,H3742 thou art the God,H430 [even] thou alone, of all the kingdomsH4467 of the earth;H776 thou hast madeH6213(QalPerf) heavenH8064 and earth.H776 [16] Lord,H3068 bow downH5186(HiphImpv) thine ear,H241 and hear:H8085(QalImpv) open,H6491(QalImpv) Lord,H3068 thine eyes,H5869 and see:H7200(QalImpv) and hearH8085(QalImpv) the wordsH1697 of Sennacherib,H5576 which hath sentH7971(QalPerf) him to reproachH2778(PielInf) the livingH2416 God.H430 [17] Of a truth,H551 Lord,H3068 the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 have destroyedH2717(HiphPerf) the nationsH1471 and their lands,H776 [18] And have castH5414(QalPerf) their godsH430 into the fire:H784 for they [were] no gods,H430 but the workH4639 of men’sH120 hands,H3027 woodH6086 and stone:H68 therefore they have destroyedH6(PielImpf) them. [19] Now therefore, O LordH3068 our God,H430 I beseech thee, saveH3467(HiphImpv) thou us out of his hand,H3027 that all the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776 may knowH3045(QalImpf) that thou [art] the LordH3068 God,H430 [even] thou only. [20] Then IsaiahH3470 the sonH1121 of AmozH531 sentH7971(QalImpf) to Hezekiah,H2396 saying,H559(QalInf) Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 GodH430 of Israel,H3478 [That] which thou hast prayedH6419(HithPerf) to me against SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 I have heard.H8085(QalPerf) [21] This [is] the wordH1697 that the LordH3068 hath spokenH1696(PielPerf) concerning him; The virginH1330 the daughterH1323 of ZionH6726 hath despisedH959(QalPerf) thee, [and] laughed thee to scorn;H3932(QalPerf) the daughterH1323 of JerusalemH3389 hath shakenH5128(HiphPerf) her headH7218 at thee.H310 [22] Whom hast thou reproachedH2778(PielPerf) and blasphemed?H1442(PielPerf) and against whom hast thou exaltedH7311(HiphPerf) [thy] voice,H6963 and lifted upH5375(QalImpf) thine eyesH5869 on high?H4791 [even] against the HolyH6918 [One] of Israel.H3478 [23] ByH3027 thy messengersH4397 thou hast reproachedH2778(PielPerf) the Lord,H136 and hast said,H559(QalImpf) With the multitudeH7230 of my chariotsH7393(Qere) I am come upH5927(QalPerf) to the heightH4791 of the mountains,H2022 to the sidesH3411 of Lebanon,H3844 and will cut downH3772(QalImpf) the tallH6967 cedar treesH730 thereof, [and] the choiceH4004 fir treesH1265 thereof: and I will enterH935(QalImpf) into the lodgingsH4411 of his borders,H7093 [and into] the forestH3293 of his Carmel.H3760 [24] I have diggedH6979(QalPerf) and drunkH8354(QalPerf) strangeH2114(QalPtc) waters,H4325 and with the soleH3709 of my feetH6471 have I driedH2717(HiphImpf) up all the riversH2975 of besieged places.H4693 [25] Hast thou not heardH8085(QalPerf) long agoH7350 [how] I have doneH6213(QalPerf) it, [and] of ancientH6924 timesH3117 that I have formedH3335(QalPerf) it? now have I broughtH935(HiphPerf) it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay wasteH7582(HiphInf) fencedH1219(QalPasPtc) citiesH5892 [into] ruinousH5327(NiphPtc) heaps.H1530 [26] Therefore their inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) were of smallH7116 power,H3027 they were dismayedH2865(QalPerf) and confounded;H954(QalImpf) they were [as] the grassH6212 of the field,H7704 and [as] the greenH3419 herb,H1877 [as] the grassH2682 on the housetops,H1406 and [as corn] blastedH7711 beforeH6440 it be grown up.H7054 [27] But I knowH3045(QalPerf) thy abode,H3427(QalInf) and thy going out,H3318(QalInf) and thy coming in,H935(QalInf) and thy rageH7264(HithInf) against me. [28] Because thy rageH7264(HithInf) against me and thy tumultH7600 is come upH5927(QalPerf) into mine ears,H241 therefore I will putH7760(QalPerf) my hookH2397 in thy nose,H639 and my bridleH4964 in thy lips,H8193 and I will turn thee backH7725(HiphPerf) by the wayH1870 by which thou camest.H935(QalPerf) [29] And this [shall be] a signH226 unto thee, Ye shall eatH398(QalInf) this yearH8141 such things as growH5599 of themselves, and in the secondH8145 yearH8141 that which springethH7823 of the same; and in the thirdH7992 yearH8141 sowH2232(QalImpv) ye, and reap,H7114(QalImpv) and plantH5193(QalImpv) vineyards,H3754 and eatH398(QalImpv) the fruitsH6529 thereof. [30] And the remnantH7604(NiphPtc) that is escapedH6413 of the houseH1004 of JudahH3063 shall yet againH3254(QalPerf) take rootH8328 downward,H4295 and bearH6213(QalPerf) fruitH6529 upward.H4605 [31] For out of JerusalemH3389 shall go forthH3318(QalImpf) a remnant,H7611 and they that escapeH6413 out of mountH2022 Zion:H6726 the zealH7068 of the LordH3068 [of hosts (8675)H6635] shall doH6213(QalImpf) this. [32] Therefore thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 concerning the kingH4428 of Assyria,H804 He shall not comeH935(QalImpf) into this city,H5892 nor shootH3384(HiphImpf) an arrowH2671 there, nor come beforeH6923(PielImpf) it with shield,H4043 nor castH8210(QalImpf) a bankH5550 against it. [33] By the wayH1870 that he came,H935(QalImpf) by the same shall he return,H7725(QalImpf) and shall not comeH935(QalImpf) into this city,H5892 saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord.H3068 [34] For I will defendH1598(QalPerf) this city,H5892 to saveH3467(HiphInf) it, for mine own sake, and for my servantH5650 David’sH1732 sake. [35] And it came to pass that night,H3915 that the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 went out,H3318(QalImpf) and smoteH5221(HiphImpf) in the campH4264 of the AssyriansH804 an hundredH3967 fourscoreH8084 and fiveH2568 thousand:H505 and when they arose earlyH7925(HiphImpf) in the morning,H1242 behold, they [were] all deadH4191(QalPtc) corpses.H6297 [36] So SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 departed,H5265(QalImpf) and wentH3212(QalImpf) and returned,H7725(QalImpf) and dweltH3427(QalImpf) at Nineveh.H5210 [37] And it came to pass, as he was worshippingH7812(HithPtc) in the houseH1004 of NisrochH5268 his god,H430 that AdrammelechH152 and SharezerH8272 his sonsH1121 smoteH5221(HiphPerf) him with the sword:H2719 and they escapedH4422(NiphPerf) into the landH776 of Armenia.H780 And EsarhaddonH634 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead.
