[1] “However, Job, please hear my speech,
and listen to all my words.
[2] See now, I have opened my mouth.
My tongue has spoken in my mouth.
[3] My words will utter the uprightness of my heart.
That which my lips know they will speak sincerely.
[4] The Spirit of God has made me,
and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
[5] If you can, answer me.
Set your words in order before me, and stand up.
[6] Behold, I am toward God even as you are.
I am also formed out of the clay.
[7] Behold, my terror will not make you afraid,
neither will my pressure be heavy on you.
[8] “Surely you have spoken in my hearing,
I have heard the voice of your words, saying,
[9] ‘I am clean, without disobedience.
I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me.
[10] Behold, he finds occasions against me.
He counts me for his enemy.
[11] He puts my feet in the stocks.
He marks all my paths.’
[12] “Behold, I will answer you. In this you are not just,
for God is greater than man.
[13] Why do you strive against him,
because he doesn’t give account of any of his matters?
[14] For God speaks once,
yes twice, though man pays no attention.
[15] In a dream, in a vision of the night,
when deep sleep falls on men,
in slumbering on the bed,
[16] then he opens the ears of men,
and seals their instruction,
[17] that he may withdraw man from his purpose,
and hide pride from man.
[18] He keeps back his soul from the pit,
and his life from perishing by the sword.
[19] “He is chastened also with pain on his bed,
with continual strife in his bones,
[20] so that his life abhors bread,
and his soul dainty food.
[21] His flesh is so consumed away that it can’t be seen.
His bones that were not seen stick out.
[22] Yes, his soul draws near to the pit,
and his life to the destroyers.
[23] “If there is beside him an angel,
an interpreter, one among a thousand,
to show to man what is right for him,
[24] then God is gracious to him, and says,
‘Deliver him from going down to the pit,
I have found a ransom.’
[25] His flesh will be fresher than a child’s.
He returns to the days of his youth.
[26] He prays to God, and he is favorable to him,
so that he sees his face with joy.
He restores to man his righteousness.
[27] He sings before men, and says,
‘I have sinned, and perverted that which was right,
and it didn’t profit me.
[28] He has redeemed my soul from going into the pit.
My life will see the light.’
[29] “Behold, God does all these things,
twice, yes three times, with a man,
[30] to bring back his soul from the pit,
that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.
[31] Mark well, Job, and listen to me.
Hold your peace, and I will speak.
[32] If you have anything to say, answer me.
Speak, for I desire to justify you.
[33] If not, listen to me.
Hold your peace, and I will teach you wisdom.”
King James Version

[8] Surely thou hast spokenH559(QalPerf) in mine hearing,H241 and I have heardH8085(QalImpf) the voiceH6963 of [thy] words,H4405 [saying], [9] I am cleanH2134 without transgression,H6588 I [am] innocent;H2643 neither [is there] iniquityH5771 in me. [10] Behold, he findethH4672(QalImpf) occasionsH8569 against me, he countethH2803(QalImpf) me for his enemy,H341(QalActPtc) [11] He puttethH7760(QalImpf) my feetH7272 in the stocks,H5465 he markethH8104(QalImpf) all my paths.H734 [12] Behold, [in] this thou art not just:H6663(QalPerf) I will answerH6030(QalImpf) thee, that GodH433 is greaterH7235(QalImpf) than man.H582 [13] Why dost thou striveH7378(QalPerf) against him? for he giveth not accountH6030(QalImpf) of any of his matters.H1697 [14] For GodH410 speakethH1696(PielImpf) once,H259 yea twice,H8147 [yet man] perceivethH7789(QalImpf) it not. [15] In a dream,H2472 in a visionH2384 of the night,H3915 when deepH8639 sleep fallethH5307(QalInf) upon men,H582 in slumberingsH8572 upon the bed;H4904 [16] Then he openethH1540(QalImpf) the earsH241 of men,H582 and sealethH2856(QalImpf) their instruction,H4561 [17] That he may withdrawH5493(HiphInf) manH120 [from his] purpose,H4639 and hideH3680(PielImpf) prideH1466 from man.H1397 [18] He keepeth backH2820(QalImpf) his soulH5315 from the pit,H7845 and his lifeH2416 from perishingH5674(QalInf) by the sword.H7973 [19] He is chastenedH3198(HophPerf) also with painH4341 upon his bed,H4904 and the multitudeH7230(Qere) of his bonesH6106 with strongH386 [pain]: [20] So that his lifeH2416 abhorrethH2092(PielPerf) bread,H3899 and his soulH5315 daintyH8378 meat.H3978 [21] His fleshH1320 is consumed away,H3615(QalImpf) that it cannot be seen;H7210 and his bonesH6106 [that] were not seenH7200(PualPerf) stick out.H8192(PualPerf/Qere) [22] Yea, his soulH5315 draweth nearH7126(QalImpf) unto the grave,H7845 and his lifeH2416 to the destroyers.H4191(HiphPtc) [23] If thereH3426 be a messengerH4397 with him, an interpreter,H3887(HiphPtc) oneH259 among a thousand,H505 to shewH5046(HiphInf) unto manH120 his uprightness:H3476 [24] Then he is graciousH2603(QalImpf) unto him, and saith,H559(QalImpf) DeliverH6308(QalImpv) him from going downH3381(QalInf) to the pit:H7845 I have foundH4672(QalPerf) a ransom.H3724 [25] His fleshH1320 shall be fresherH7375(NiphPerf) than a child’s:H5290 he shall returnH7725(QalImpf) to the daysH3117 of his youth:H5934 [26] He shall prayH6279(QalImpf) unto God,H433 and he will be favourableH7521(QalImpf) unto him: and he shall seeH7200(QalImpf) his faceH6440 with joy:H8643 for he will renderH7725(HiphImpf) unto manH582 his righteousness.H6666 [27] He lookethH7789(QalImpf) upon men,H582 and [if any] say,H559(QalImpf) I have sinned,H2398(QalPerf) and pervertedH5753(HiphPerf) [that which was] right,H3477 and it profitedH7737(QalPerf) me not; [28] He will deliverH6299(QalPerf) his soulH5315 from goingH5674(QalInf) into the pit,H7845 and his lifeH2416 shall seeH7200(QalImpf) the light.H216 [29] Lo, all these [things] workethH6466(QalImpf) GodH410 oftentimesH6471 with man,H1397 [30] To bring backH7725(HiphInf) his soulH5315 from the pit,H7845 to be enlightenedH215(NiphInf) with the lightH216 of the living.H2416 [31] Mark well,H7181(HiphImpv) O Job,H347 hearkenH8085(QalImpv) unto me: hold thy peace,H2790(HiphImpv) and I will speak.H1696(PielImpf) [32] If thou hastH3426 any thing to say,H4405 answerH7725(HiphImpv) me: speak,H1696(PielImpv) for I desireH2654(QalPerf) to justifyH6663(PielInf) thee.
