[1] There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God,§ and turned away from evil. [2] There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. [3] His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east. [4] His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. [5] It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually. [6] Now on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before Yahweh,§ Satan also came among them. [7] Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” [8] Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.” [9] Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? [10] Haven’t you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. [11] But stretch out your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face.” [12] Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold,§ all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don’t stretch out your hand.”So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh. [13] It fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, [14] that a messenger came to Job, and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them, [15] and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” [16] While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” [17] While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you.” [18] While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, [19] and behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you.” [20] Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped. [21] He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh’s name.” [22] In all this, Job didn’t sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.
Footnotes
- The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).

- “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.
King James Version
[1] There was a manH376 in the landH776 of Uz,H5780 whose nameH8034 [was] Job;H347 and that manH376 was perfectH8535 and upright,H3477 and one that fearedH3373 God,H430 and eschewedH5493(QalActPtc) evil.H7451 [2] And there were bornH3205(NiphImpf) unto him sevenH7651 sonsH1121 and threeH7969 daughters.H1323 [3] His substanceH4735 also was sevenH7651 thousandH505 sheep,H6629 and threeH7969 thousandH505 camels,H1581 and fiveH2568 hundredH3967 yokeH6776 of oxen,H1241 and fiveH2568 hundredH3967 she asses,H860 and a veryH3966 greatH7227 household;H5657 so that this manH376 was the greatestH1419 of all the menH1121 of the east.H6924 [4] And his sonsH1121 wentH1980(QalPerf) and feastedH4960 [in their] houses,H1004 every oneH376 his day;H3117 and sentH7971(QalPerf) and calledH7121(QalPerf) for their threeH7969 sistersH269 to eatH398(QalInf) and to drinkH8354(QalInf) with them. [5] And it was so, when the daysH3117 of [their] feastingH4960 were gone about,H5362(HiphPerf) that JobH347 sentH7971(QalImpf) and sanctifiedH6942(PielImpf) them, and rose up earlyH7925(HiphPerf) in the morning,H1242 and offeredH5927(HiphPerf) burnt offeringsH5930 [according] to the numberH4557 of them all: for JobH347 said,H559(QalPerf) It may beH194 that my sonsH1121 have sinned,H2398(QalPerf) and cursedH1288(PielPerf) GodH430 in their hearts.H3824 Thus didH6213(QalImpf) JobH347 continually.H3117 [6] Now there was a dayH3117 when the sonsH1121 of GodH430 cameH935(QalImpf) to presentH3320(HithInf) themselves before the Lord,H3068 and SatanH7854 cameH935(QalImpf) also amongH8432 them. [7] And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Satan,H7854 WhenceH370 comestH935(QalImpf) thou? Then SatanH7854 answeredH6030(QalImpf) the Lord,H3068 and said,H559(QalImpf) From going to and froH7751(QalInf) in the earth,H776 and from walking up and downH1980(HithInf) in it. [8] And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Satan,H7854 Hast thou consideredH7760(QalPerf) my servantH5650 Job,H347 that [there is] none like him in the earth,H776 a perfectH8535 and an uprightH3477 man,H376 one that fearethH3373 God,H430 and eschewethH5493(QalActPtc) evil?H7451 [9] Then SatanH7854 answeredH6030(QalImpf) the Lord,H3068 and said,H559(QalImpf) Doth JobH347 fearH3372(QalPerf) GodH430 for nought?H2600 [10] Hast not thou made an hedgeH7753(QalPerf) about him, and aboutH1157 his house,H1004 and about all that he hath on every side?H5439 thou hast blessedH1288(PielPerf) the workH4639 of his hands,H3027 and his substanceH4735 is increasedH6555(QalPerf) in the land.H776 [11] ButH199 put forthH7971(QalImpv) thine handH3027 now, and touchH5060(QalImpv) all that he hath, and he will curseH1288(PielImpf) thee to thy face.H6440 [12] And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Satan,H7854 Behold, all that he hath [is] in thy power;H3027 only upon himself put not forthH7971(QalImpf) thine hand.H3027 So SatanH7854 went forthH3318(QalImpf) from the presenceH6440 of the Lord.H3068 [13] And there was a dayH3117 when his sonsH1121 and his daughtersH1323 [were] eatingH398(QalActPtc) and drinkingH8354(QalActPtc) wineH3196 in their eldestH1060 brother’sH251 house:H1004 [14] And there cameH935(QalPerf) a messengerH4397 unto Job,H347 and said,H559(QalImpf) The oxenH1241 were plowing,H2790(QalActPtc) and the assesH860 feedingH7462(QalActPtc) besideH3027 them: [15] And the SabeansH7614 fellH5307(QalImpf) [upon them], and took them away;H3947(QalImpf) yea, they have slainH5221(HiphPerf) the servantsH5288 with the edgeH6310 of the sword;H2719 and I only am escapedH4422(NiphImpf) alone to tellH5046(HiphInf) thee. [16] While he [was] yet speaking,H1696(PielPtc) there cameH935(QalActPtc) also another, and said,H559(QalImpf) The fireH784 of GodH430 is fallenH5307(QalPerf) from heaven,H8064 and hath burned upH1197(QalImpf) the sheep,H6629 and the servants,H5288 and consumedH398(QalImpf) them; and I only am escapedH4422(NiphImpf) alone to tellH5046(HiphInf) thee. [17] While he [was] yet speaking,H1696(PielPtc) there cameH935(QalActPtc) also another, and said,H559(QalImpf) The ChaldeansH3778 made outH7760(QalPerf) threeH7969 bands,H7218 and fellH6584(QalImpf) upon the camels,H1581 and have carried them away,H3947(QalImpf) yea, and slainH5221(HiphPerf) the servantsH5288 with the edgeH6310 of the sword;H2719 and I only am escapedH4422(NiphImpf) alone to tellH5046(HiphInf) thee. [18] While he [was] yet speaking,H1696(PielPtc) there cameH935(QalActPtc) also another, and said,H559(QalImpf) Thy sonsH1121 and thy daughtersH1323 [were] eatingH398(QalActPtc) and drinkingH8354(QalActPtc) wineH3196 in their eldestH1060 brother’sH251 house:H1004 [19] And, behold, there cameH935(QalPerf) a greatH1419 windH7307 fromH5676 the wilderness,H4057 and smoteH5060(QalImpf) the fourH702 cornersH6438 of the house,H1004 and it fellH5307(QalImpf) upon the young men,H5288 and they are dead;H4191(QalImpf) and I only am escapedH4422(NiphImpf) alone to tellH5046(HiphInf) thee. [20] Then JobH347 arose,H6965(QalImpf) and rentH7167(QalImpf) his mantle,H4598 and shavedH1494(QalImpf) his head,H7218 and fell downH5307(QalImpf) upon the ground,H776 and worshipped,H7812(HithImpf) [21] And said,H559(QalImpf) NakedH6174 came I outH3318(QalPerf) of my mother’sH517 womb,H990 and nakedH6174 shall I returnH7725(QalImpf) thither: the LordH3068 gave,H5414(QalPerf) and the LordH3068 hath taken away;H3947(QalPerf) blessedH1288(PualPtc) be the nameH8034 of the Lord.H3068 [22] In all this JobH347 sinnedH2398(QalPerf) not, nor chargedH5414(QalPerf) GodH430 foolishly.H8604
