[1] “I made a covenant with my eyes;
how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?
[2] For what is the portion from God above,
and the heritage from the Almighty on high?
[3] Is it not calamity to the unrighteous,
and disaster to the workers of iniquity?
[4] Doesn’t he see my ways,
and count all my steps?
[5] “If I have walked with falsehood,
and my foot has hurried to deceit
[6] (let me be weighed in an even balance,
that God may know my integrity);
[7] if my step has turned out of the way,
if my heart walked after my eyes,
if any defilement has stuck to my hands,
[8] then let me sow, and let another eat.
Yes, let the produce of my field be rooted out.
[9] “If my heart has been enticed to a woman,
and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,
[10] then let my wife grind for another,
and let others sleep with her.
[11] For that would be a heinous crime.
Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges,
[12] for it is a fire that consumes to destruction,
and would root out all my increase.
[13] “If I have despised the cause of my male servant
or of my female servant,
when they contended with me,
[14] what then will I do when God rises up?
When he visits, what will I answer him?
[15] Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him?
Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?
[16] “If I have withheld the poor from their desire,
or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
[17] or have eaten my morsel alone,
and the fatherless has not eaten of it
[18] (no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,
I have guided her from my mother’s womb);
[19] if I have seen any perish for want of clothing,
or that the needy had no covering;
[20] if his heart hasn’t blessed me,
if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;
[21] if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless,
because I saw my help in the gate;
[22] then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder blade,
and my arm be broken from the bone.
[23] For calamity from God is a terror to me.
Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.
[24] “If I have made gold my hope,
and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’
[25] If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,
and because my hand had gotten much;
[26] if I have seen the sun when it shined,
or the moon moving in splendor,
[27] and my heart has been secretly enticed,
and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;
[28] this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges,
for I would have denied the God who is above.
[29] “If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me,
or lifted up myself when evil found him
[30] (I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin
by asking his life with a curse);
[31] if the men of my tent have not said,
‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’
[32] (the foreigner has not camped in the street,
but I have opened my doors to the traveler);
[33] if like Adam I have covered my transgressions,
by hiding my iniquity in my heart,
[34] because I feared the great multitude,
and the contempt of families terrified me,
so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—
[35] oh that I had one to hear me!
Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me!
Let the accuser write my indictment!
[36] Surely I would carry it on my shoulder,
and I would bind it to me as a crown.
[37] I would declare to him the number of my steps.
I would go near to him like a prince.
[38] If my land cries out against me,
and its furrows weep together;
[39] if I have eaten its fruits without money,
or have caused its owners to lose their life,
[40] let briers grow instead of wheat,
and stinkweed instead of barley.”The words of Job are ended.

[1] I madeH3772(QalPerf) a covenantH1285 with mine eyes;H5869 why then should I thinkH995(HiplImpf) upon a maid?H1330 [2] For what portionH2506 of GodH433 [is there] from above?H4605 and [what] inheritanceH5159 of the AlmightyH7706 from on high?H4791 [3] [Is] not destructionH343 to the wicked?H5767 and a strangeH5235 [punishment] to the workersH6466(QalActPtc) of iniquity?H205 [4] Doth not he seeH7200(QalImpf) my ways,H1870 and countH5608(QalImpf) all my steps?H6806 [5] If I have walkedH1980(QalPerf) with vanity,H7723 or if my footH7272 hath hastedH2363(QalImpf) to deceit;H4820 [6] Let me be weighedH8254(QalImpf) in an evenH6664 balance,H3976 that GodH433 may knowH3045(QalImpf) mine integrity.H8538 [7] If my stepH838 hath turned outH5186(QalImpf) of the way,H1870 and mine heartH3820 walkedH1980(QalPerf) afterH310 mine eyes,H5869 and if any blotH3971 hath cleavedH1692(QalPerf) to mine hands;H3709 [8] [Then] let me sow,H2232(QalImpf) and let anotherH312 eat;H398(QalImpf) yea, let my offspringH6631 be rooted out.H8327(PualImpf) [9] If mine heartH3820 have been deceivedH6601(NiphPerf) by a woman,H802 or [if] I have laid waitH693(QalPerf) at my neighbour’sH7453 door;H6607 [10] [Then] let my wifeH802 grindH2912(QalImpf) unto another,H312 and let othersH312 bow downH3766(QalImpf) upon her. [11] For this [is] an heinous crime;H2154 yea, it [is] an iniquityH5771 [to be punished by] the judges.H6414 [12] For it [is] a fireH784 [that] consumethH398(QalImpf) to destruction,H11 and would root outH8327(PielImpf) all mine increase.H8393 [13] If I did despiseH3988(QalImpf) the causeH4941 of my manservantH5650 or of my maidservant,H519 when they contendedH7379 with me; [14] What then shall I doH6213(QalImpf) when GodH410 riseth up?H6965(QalImpf) and when he visiteth,H6485(QalImpf) what shall I answerH7725(HiphImpf) him? [15] Did not he that madeH6213(QalActPtc) me in the wombH990 makeH6213(QalPerf) him? and did not oneH259 fashionH3559(PoleImpf) us in the womb?H7358 [16] If I have withheldH4513(QalImpf) the poorH1800 from [their] desire,H2656 or have caused the eyesH5869 of the widowH490 to fail;H3615(PielImpf) [17] Or have eatenH398(QalImpf) my morselH6595 myself alone, and the fatherlessH3490 hath not eatenH398(QalPerf) thereof; [18] (For from my youthH5271 he was brought upH1431(QalPerf) with me, as [with] a father,H1 and I have guidedH5148(HiphImpf) her from my mother’sH517 womb;H990) [19] If I have seenH7200(QalImpf) any perishH6(QalActPtc) for want of clothing,H3830 or any poorH34 without covering;H3682 [20] If his loinsH2504 have not blessedH1288(PielPerf) me, and [if] he were [not] warmedH2552(HithImpf) with the fleeceH1488 of my sheep;H3532 [21] If I have lifted upH5130(HiphPerf) my handH3027 against the fatherless,H3490 when I sawH7200(QalImpf) my helpH5833 in the gate:H8179 [22] [Then] let mine armH3802 fallH5307(QalImpf) from my shoulder blade,H7929 and mine armH248 be brokenH7665(NiphImpf) from the bone.H7070 [23] For destructionH343 [from] GodH410 [was] a terrorH6343 to me, and by reason of his highnessH7613 I couldH3201(QalImpf) not endure. [24] If I have madeH7760(QalPerf) goldH2091 my hope,H3689 or have saidH559(QalPerf) to the fine gold,H3800 [Thou art] my confidence;H4009 [25] If I rejoicedH8055(QalImpf) because my wealthH2428 [was] great,H7227 and because mine handH3027 had gottenH4672(QalPerf) much;H3524 [26] If I beheldH7200(QalImpf) the sunH216 when it shined,H1984(HiphImpf) or the moonH3394 walkingH1980(QalActPtc) [in] brightness;H3368 [27] And my heartH3820 hath been secretlyH5643 enticed,H6601(QalImpf) or my mouthH6310 hath kissedH5401(QalImpf) my hand:H3027 [28] This also [were] an iniquityH5771 [to be punished by] the judge:H6416 for I should have deniedH3584(PielPerf) the GodH410 [that is] above.H4605 [29] If I rejoicedH8055(QalImpf) at the destructionH6365 of him that hatedH8130(PielPtc) me, or lifted upH5782(HiplPerf) myself when evilH7451 foundH4672(QalPerf) him: [30] Neither have I sufferedH5414(QalPerf) my mouthH2441 to sinH2398(QalInf) by wishingH7592(QalInf) a curseH423 to his soul.H5315 [31] If the menH4962 of my tabernacleH168 saidH559(QalPerf) not, Oh that we hadH5414(QalImpf) of his flesh!H1320 we cannot be satisfied.H7646(QalImpf) [32] The strangerH1616 did not lodgeH3885(QalImpf) in the street:H2351 [but] I openedH6605(QalImpf) my doorsH1817 to the traveller.H734 [33] If I coveredH3680(PielPerf) my transgressionsH6588 as Adam,H121 by hidingH2934(QalInf) mine iniquityH5771 in my bosom:H2243 [34] Did I fearH6206(QalImpf) a greatH7227 multitude,H1995 or did the contemptH937 of familiesH4940 terrifyH2865(HiphImpf) me, that I kept silence,H1826(QalImpf) [and] went not outH3318(QalImpf) of the door?H6607 [35] Oh thatH5414(QalImpf) one would hearH8085(QalActPtc) me! behold, my desireH8420 [is, that] the AlmightyH7706 would answerH6030(QalImpf) me, and [that] mine adversaryH376 had writtenH3789(QalPerf) a book.H5612 [36] Surely I would takeH5375(QalImpf) it upon my shoulder,H7926 [and] bindH6029(QalImpf) it [as] a crownH5850 to me. [37] I would declareH5046(HiphImpf) unto him the numberH4557 of my steps;H6806 as a princeH5057 would I go nearH7126(PielImpf) unto him.
