At midnight, the man was startled and turned himself; and behold, a woman lay at his feet.

And it cometh to pass, at the middle of the night, that the man trembleth, and turneth himself, and lo, a woman is lying at his feet.

She lay at his feet until the morning, then she rose up before one could discern another. For he said, “Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.”

And she lieth down at his feet till the morning, and riseth before one doth discern another; and he saith, ‘Let it not be known that the woman hath come into the floor.’

When she came to her mother-in-law, she said, “How did it go, my daughter?” She told her all that the man had done for her.

And she cometh in unto her mother-in-law, and she saith, ‘Who art thou, my daughter?’ and she declareth to her all that the man hath done to her.

Then she said, “Wait, my daughter, until you know what will happen; for the man will not rest until he has settled this today.”

And she saith, ‘Sit still, my daughter, till thou dost know how the matter falleth, for the man doth not rest except he hath completed the matter to-day.’

Boaz took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, “Sit down here,” and they sat down.

And this is formerly in Israel for redemption and for changing, to establish anything: a man hath drawn off his sandal, and given it to his neighbour, and this is the testimony in Israel.

Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

And there is a certain man of Ramathaim-Zophim, of the hill-country of Ephraim, and his name is Elkanah, son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, and Ephrathite,

This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh^§ of Armies in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Yahweh, were there.

And that man hath gone up out of his city from time to time, to bow himself, and to sacrifice, before Jehovah of Hosts, in Shiloh, and there are two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Jehovah.

Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why don’t you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Elkanah H511 her husband H376 to her, Hannah, H2584 why weepest H1058 (QalImpf) thou? and why eatest H398 (QalImpf) thou not? and why is thy heart H3824 grieved? H3415 (QalImpf) [am] not I better H2896 to thee than ten H6235 sons? H1121

And Elkanah her husband saith to her, ‘Hannah, why weepest thou? and why dost thou not eat? and why is thy heart afflicted? am I not better to thee than ten sons?’

She vowed a vow, and said, “Yahweh of Armies, if you will indeed look at the affliction of your servant and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a boy, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.”

and voweth a vow, and saith, ‘Jehovah of Hosts, if Thou dost certainly look on the affliction of Thy handmaid, and hast remembered me, and dost not forget Thy handmaid, and hast given to Thy handmaid seed of men-then I have given him to Jehovah all days of his life, and a razor doth not go up upon his head.’

The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice and his vow.

And the man H376 Elkanah, H511 and all his house, H1004 went up H5927 (QalImpf) to offer H2076 (QalInf) unto the Lord H3068 the yearly H3117 sacrifice, H2077 and his vow. H5088

And the man Elkanah goeth up, and all his house, to sacrifice to Jehovah the sacrifice of the days, and his vow.

But Hannah didn’t go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and stay there forever.”

But Hannah H2584 went not up; H5927 (QalPerf) for she said H559 (QalPerf) unto her husband, H376 [I will not go up] until the child H5288 be weaned, H1580 (NiphImpf) and [then] I will bring H935 (HiphPerf) him, that he may appear H7200 (NiphPerf) before H6440 the Lord, H3068 and there abide H3427 (QalPerf) for H5704 ever. And Hannah hath not gone up, for she said to her husband, ‘Till the youth is weaned-then I have brought him in, and he hath appeared before the face of Jehovah, and dwelt there-unto the age.’

Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may Yahweh establish his word.” So the woman waited and nursed her son until she weaned him.

And Elkanah H511 her husband H376 said H559 (QalImpf) unto her, Do H6213 (QalImpv) what seemeth H5869 thee good; H2896 tarry H3427 (QalImpv) until thou have weaned H1580 (QalInf) him; only the Lord H3068 establish H6965 (HiphImpf) his word. And Elkanah her husband saith to her, ‘Do that which is good in thine eyes; abide till thy weaning him; only, Jehovah establish His word;’ and the woman abideth and suckleth her son till she hath weaned him,

He will keep the feet of his holy ones, but the wicked will be put to silence in darkness; for no man will prevail by strength.

The feet of His saints He keepeth, And the wicked in darkness are silent, For not by power doth man become mighty.

The custom of the priests with the people was that when anyone offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant came while the meat was boiling, with a fork of three teeth in his hand;

And the priests’ H3548 custom H4941 with the people H5971 [was, that], when any man H376 offered H2076 (QalActPtc) sacrifice, H2077 the priest’s H3548 servant H5288 came, H935 (QalPerf) while the flesh H1320 was in seething, H1310 (PielInf) with a fleshhook H4207 of three H7969 teeth H8127 in his hand; H3027

And the custom of the priests with the people is: any man sacrificing a sacrifice-then hath the servant of the priest come in when the flesh is boiling, and the hook of three teeth in his hand,

Yes, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat to roast for the priest; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw.”

Also before they make perfume with the fat-then hath the priest’s servant come in, and said to the man who is sacrificing, ‘Give flesh to roast for the priest, and he doth not take of thee flesh boiled, but raw;’

If the man said to him, “Let the fat be burned first, and then take as much as your soul desires;” then he would say, “No, but you shall give it to me now; and if not, I will take it by force.”

And [if] any man H376 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Let them not fail H6999 (HiphImpf) to burn H6999 (PielInf) the fat H2459 presently, H3117 and [then] take H3947 (QalImpv) [as much] as thy soul H5315 desireth; H183 (PielImpf) then he would answer H559 (QalPerf) him, [Nay]; but thou shalt give H5414 (QalImpf) [it me] now: and if not, I will take H3947 (QalPerf) [it] by force. and the man saith unto him, ‘Let them surely make a perfume (as to-day) with the fat, then take to thee as thy soul desireth;’ and he hath said to him, ‘Surely now thou dost give; and if not-I have taken by strength.’

The sin of the young men was very great before Yahweh; for the men despised Yahweh’s offering.

Wherefore the sin H2403 of the young men H5288 was very H3966 great H1419 before H6440 the Lord: H3068 for men H582 abhorred H5006 (PielPerf) the offering H4503 of the Lord. H3068

And the sin of the young men is very great in the presence of Jehovah, for the men have despised the offering of Jehovah.

Moreover his mother made him a little robe, and brought it to him from year to year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

and a small upper coat doth his mother make to him, and she hath brought it up to him from time to time, in her coming up with her husband to sacrifice the sacrifice of the time.

If one man sins against another, God will judge him; but if a man sins against Yahweh, who will intercede for him?” Notwithstanding, they didn’t listen to the voice of their father, because Yahweh intended to kill them.

If one man H376 sin H2398 (QalImpf) against another, H376 the judge H430 shall judge H6419 (PielPerf) him: but if a man H376 sin H2398 (QalImpf) against the Lord, H3068 who shall intreat H6419 (HithImpf) for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened H8085 (QalImpf) not unto the voice H6963 of their father, H1 because the Lord H3068 would H2654 (QalPerf) slay H4191 (HiphInf) them.

If a man sin against a man, then hath God judged him; but if against Jehovah a man sin, who doth pray for him?’ and they hearken not to the voice of their father, though Jehovah hath delighted to put them to death.

The child Samuel grew on, and increased in favor both with Yahweh and also with men.

And the child H5288 Samuel H8050 grew H1432 on, H1980 (QalActPtc) and was in favour H2896 both with the Lord, H3068 and also with men. H582

And the youth Samuel is going on and growing up, and is good both with Jehovah, and also with men.

A man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Did I reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in bondage to Pharaoh’s house?

And there came H935 (QalImpf) a man H376 of God H430 unto Eli, H5941 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord, H3068 Did I plainly H1540 (NiphInf) appear H1540 (NiphPerf) unto the house H1004 of thy father, H1 when they were in Egypt H4714 in Pharaoh’s H6547 house? H1004

And there cometh a man of God unto Eli, and saith unto him, ‘Thus said Jehovah, Was I really revealed unto the house of thy father in their being in Egypt, before Pharaoh’s house,

The man of yours whom I don’t cut off from my altar will consume your eyes^§ and grieve your heart. All the increase of your house will die in the flower of their age.

‘And the man I cut not off of thine from Mine altar, is to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thy soul; and all the increase of thy house do die men;

The Philistines put themselves in array against Israel. When they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.

And the Philistines H6430 put themselves in array H6186 (QalImpf) against H7125 (QalInf) Israel: H3478 and when they joined H5203 (QalImpf) battle, H4421 Israel H3478 was smitten H5062 (NiphImpf) before H6440 the Philistines: H6430 and they slew H5221 (HiphImpf) of the army H4634 in the field H7704 about four H702 thousand H505 men. H376

and the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreadeth itself, and Israel is smitten before the Philistines, and they smite among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.

Be strong and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight!”

Be strong, H2388 (HithImpv) and quit H1961 (QalImpv) yourselves like men, H582 O ye Philistines, H6430 that ye be not servants H5647 (QalImpf) unto the Hebrews, H5680 as they have been H5647 (QalPerf) to you: quit H1961 (QalPerf) yourselves like men, H582 and fight. H3898 (NiphPerf)

Strengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest ye do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you-then ye have become men, and have fought.’

The Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell.

And the Philistines H6430 fought, H3898 (NiphImpf) and Israel H3478 was smitten, H5062 (NiphImpf) and they fled H5127 (QalImpf) every man H376 into his tent: H168 and there was a very H3966 great H1419 slaughter; H4347 for there fell H5307 (QalImpf) of Israel H3478 thirty H7970 thousand H505 footmen. And the Philistines fight, and Israel is smitten, and they flee each to his tents, and the blow is very great, and there fall of Israel thirty thousand footmen;

A man of Benjamin ran out of the army and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.

And there ran H7323 (QalImpf) a man H376 of Benjamin H1144 out of the army, H4634 and came H935 (QalImpf) to Shiloh H7887 the same day H3117 with his clothes H4055 rent, H7167 (QalPasPtc) and with earth H127 upon his head. H7218

And a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes are rent, and earth on his head;

When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for God’s ark. When the man came into the city and told about it, all the city cried out.

And when he came, H935 (QalImpf) lo, Eli H5941 sat H3427 (QalActPtc) upon a seat H3678 by the wayside H1870 H3027 (Qere) H3197 watching: H6822 (PielPtc) for his heart H3820 trembled H2730 for the ark H727 of God. and he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare it in the city, and all the city crieth out.

When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” The man hurried, and came and told Eli.

And when Eli H5941 heard H8085 (QalImpf) the noise H6963 of the crying, H6818 he said, H559 (QalImpf) What [meaneth] the noise H6963 of this tumult? H1995 And the man H376 came H935 (QalImpf) in hastily, H4116 (PielPerf) and told H5046 (HiphImpf) Eli. H5941

And Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, ‘What-the noise of this tumult!’ And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.

The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”

And the man H376 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Eli, H5941 I [am] he that came H935 (QalActPtc) out of the army, H4634 and I fled H5127 (QalPerf) to day H3117 out of the army. H4634 And he said, H559 (QalImpf) What is there done, H1697 my son? H1121

And the man saith unto Eli, ‘I am he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;’ and he saith, ‘What hath been the matter, my son?’

When he made mention of God’s ark, Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

And it came to pass, when he made mention H2142 (HiphInf) of the ark H727 of God, H430 that he fell H5307 (QalImpf) from off the seat H3678 backward H322 by H1157 the side H3027 of the gate, H8179 and his neck H4665 brake, H7665 (NiphImpf) and he died: H4191 (QalImpf) for he was an old H2204 (QalPerf) man, H376 and heavy. And it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man is old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.

His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to giving birth. When she heard the news that God’s ark was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth; for her pains came on her.

And his daughter in law, H3618 Phinehas’ H6372 wife, H802 was with child, H2030 [near] to be delivered: H3205 (QalInf) and when she heard H8085 (QalImpf) the tidings H8052 that H413 the ark H727 of God H430 was taken, H3947 (NiphInf) and that her father in law H2524 and her husband H376 were dead, H4191 (QalPerf) she bowed H3766 (QalImpf) herself and travailed; H3205 (QalImpf) for her pains H6735 came H2015 (NiphPerf) upon her.

And his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, is pregnant, about to bear, and she heareth the report of the taking of the ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she boweth, and beareth, for her pains have turned upon her.

She named the child Ichabod,° saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because God’s ark was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

and she calleth the youth I-Chabod, saying, ‘Honour hath removed from Israel,’ because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

When the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel shall not stay with us, for his hand is severe on us and on Dagon our god.”

And when the men H582 of Ashdod H795 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that [it was] so, they said, H559 (QalPerf) The ark H727 of the God H430 of Israel H3478 shall not abide H3427 (QalImpf) with us: for his hand H3027 is sore H7185 (QalPerf) upon us, and upon Dagon H1712 our god. H430

And the men of Ashdod see that it is so, and have said, ‘The ark of the God of Israel doth not abide with us, for hard hath been His hand upon us, and upon Dagon our god.’

It was so, that after they had carried it there, Yahweh’s hand was against the city with a very great confusion; and he struck the men of the city, both small and great, so that tumors broke out on them.

And it was [so], that, after H310 they had carried it about, H5437 (HiphPerf) the hand H3027 of the Lord H3068 was against the city H5892 with a very H3966 great H1419 destruction: H4103 and he smote H5221 (HiphImpf) the men H582 of the city, H5892 both small H6996 and great, H1419 and they had emerods H2914 (Qere) H6076 in their secret parts. and it cometh to pass after they have brought it round, that the hand of Jehovah is against the city-a very great destruction; and He smiteth the men of the city, from small even unto great; and break forth on them do emerods.

The men who didn’t die were struck with the tumors; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

And the men H582 that died H4191 (QalPerf) not were smitten H5221 (HophPerf) with the emerods: H2914 (Qere) H6076 and the cry H7775 of the city H5892 went up H5927 (QalImpf) to heaven. H8064

and the men who have not died have been smitten with emerods, and the cry of the city goeth up into the heavens.

The men did so, and took two milk cows and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home.

And the men H582 did so; H6213 (QalImpf) and took H3947 (QalImpf) two H8147 milch H5763 (QalActPtc) kine, H6510 and tied H631 (QalImpf) them to the cart, H5699 and shut up H3607 (QalPerf) their calves H1121 at home: H1004

And the men do so, and take two suckling kine, and bind them in the cart, and their young ones they have shut up in the house;

The Levites took down Yahweh’s ark and the box that was with it, in which the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone; and the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day to Yahweh.

And the Levites H3881 took down H3381 (HiphPerf) the ark H727 of the Lord, H3068 and the coffer H712 that [was] with it, wherein the jewels H3627 of gold H2091 [were], and put H7760 (QalImpf) [them] on the great H1419 stone: H68 and the men H582 of Bethshemesh H1053 offered H5927 (HiphPerf) burnt offerings H5930 and sacrificed H2076 (QalImpf) sacrifices H2077 the same day H3117 unto the Lord. And the Levites have taken down the ark of Jehovah, and the coffer which is with it, in which are the vessels of gold, and place them on the great stone; and the men of Beth-Shemesh have caused to ascend burnt-offerings and sacrifice sacrifices in that day to Jehovah;

He struck of the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into Yahweh’s ark, he struck fifty thousand seventy of the men. Then the people mourned, because Yahweh had struck the people with a great slaughter.

And He smiteth among the men of Beth-Shemesh, for they looked into the ark of Jehovah, yea, He smiteth among the people seventy men-fifty chief men; and the people mourn, because Jehovah smote among the people-a great smiting.

The men of Beth Shemesh said, “Who is able to stand before Yahweh, this holy God? To whom shall he go up from us?”

And the men H582 of Bethshemesh H1053 said, H559 (QalImpf) Who is able H3201 (QalImpf) to stand H5975 (QalInf) before H6440 this holy H6918 Lord H3068 God? H430 and to whom shall he go up H5927 (QalImpf) from us?

And the men of Beth-Shemesh say, ‘Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and unto whom doth He go up from us?’

The men of Kiriath Jearim came and took Yahweh’s ark, and brought it into Abinadab’s house on the hill, and consecrated Eleazar his son to keep Yahweh’s ark.

And the men H582 of Kirjathjearim H7157 came, H935 (QalImpf) and fetched up H5927 (HiphImpf) the ark H727 of the Lord, H3068 and brought H935 (HiphImpf) it into the house H1004 of Abinadab H41 in the hill, H1389 and sanctified H6942 (PielPerf) Eleazar H499 his son H1121 to keep H8104 (QalInf) the ark H727 of the Lord. H3068

And the men of Kirjath-Jearim come and bring up the ark of Jehovah, and bring it in unto the house of Abinadab, in the height, and Eleazar his son they have sanctified to keep the ark of Jehovah.

The men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and struck them until they came under Beth Kar.

And the men H582 of Israel H3478 went out H3318 (QalImpf) of Mizpeh, H4709 and pursued H7291 (QalImpf) the Philistines, H6430 and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) them, until [they came] under Bethcar. H1033

And the men of Israel go out from Mizpeh, and pursue the Philistines, and smite them unto the place of Beth-Car.

Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice, and make them a king.” Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Everyone go to your own city.”

and Jehovah saith unto Samuel, ‘Hearken to their voice, and thou hast caused to reign over them a king.’ And Samuel saith unto the men of Israel, ‘Go ye each to his city.’

Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor.

And there is a man of Benjamin, and his name is Kish, son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Bechorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, mighty of valour,

He had a son whose name was Saul, an impressive young man; and there was not among the children of Israel a more handsome person than he. From his shoulders and upward he was taller than any of the people.

And he had a son, H1121 whose name H8034 [was] Saul, H7586 a choice young man, H970 and a goodly: H2896 and [there was] not among the children H1121 of Israel H3478 a goodlier H2896 person H376 than he: from his shoulders H7926 and upward H4605 [he was] higher H1364 than any of the people. H5971

and he hath a son, and his name is Saul, a choice youth and goodly, and there is not a man among the sons of Israel goodlier than he-from his shoulder and upward, higher than any of the people.

The servant said to him, “Behold now, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says surely happens. Now let’s go there. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go.”

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Behold now, [there is] in this city H5892 a man H376 of God, H430 and [he is] an honourable H3513 (NiphPtc) man; H376 all that he saith H1696 (PielImpf) cometh H935 (QalImpf) surely to pass: H935 (QalInf) now let us go H3212 (QalImpf) thither; peradventure he can shew H5046 (HiphImpf) us our way H1870 that we should go. And he saith to him, ‘Lo, I pray thee, a man of God is in this city, and the man is honoured; all that he speaketh doth certainly come; now, we go there, it may be he doth declare to us our way on which we have gone.’

Then Saul said to his servant, “But behold, if we go, what should we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our sacks, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Saul H7586 to his servant, H5288 But, behold, [if] we go, H3212 (QalImpf) what shall we bring H935 (HiphImpf) the man? And Saul saith to his young man, ‘And lo, we go, and what do we bring in to the man? for the bread hath gone from our vessels, and a present there is not to bring in to the man of God-what is with us?’

The servant answered Saul again and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel° of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”

1 Samuel 9:8 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces, so ¹⁄₄ shekel would be a small coin of about 2.5 grams.

And the servant H5288 answered H6030 (QalInf) Saul H7586 again, H3254 (HiphImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, I have H4672 (NiphPerf) here at hand H3027 the fourth part H7253 of a shekel H8255 of silver: H3701 [that] will I give H5414 (QalPerf) to the man H376 of God, H430 to tell H5046 (HiphPerf) us our way. H1870

And the young man addeth to answer Saul, and saith, ‘Lo, there is found with me a fourth of a shekel of silver: and I have given to the man of God, and he hath declared to us our way.’

(In earlier times in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come! Let’s go to the seer;” for he who is now called a prophet was before called a seer.)

Formerly in Israel, thus said the man in his going to seek God, ‘Come and we go unto the seer,’ for the ‘prophet’ of to-day is called formerly ‘the seer.’

Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said. Come! Let’s go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.
