Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”

And Saul saith unto his servants, ‘Provide, I pray you, for me a man playing well-then ye have brought him in unto me.’

David came to Saul and stood before him. He loved him greatly; and he became his armor bearer.

And David H1732 came H935 (QalImpf) to Saul, H7586 and stood H5975 (QalImpf) before H6440 him: and he loved H157 (QalImpf) him greatly; H3966 and he became his armourbearer. H5375 (QalActPtc) H3627

And David cometh in unto Saul, and standeth before him, and he loveth him greatly; and he is a bearer of his weapons.

Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons. The man was an elderly old man in the days of Saul.

Now David H1732 [was] the son H1121 of that Ephrathite H376 H673 of Bethlehemjudah, H1035 H3063 whose name H8034 [was] Jesse; H3448 and he had eight H8083 sons: H1121 and the man H376 went H935 (QalPerf) among men H582 [for] an old man H2204 (QalPerf) in the days H3117 of Saul. H7586

And David is son of this Ephrathite of Beth-Lehem-Judah, whose name is Jesse, and he hath eight sons, and the man in the days of Saul hath become aged among men;

and bring these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand; and see how your brothers are doing, and bring back news.”

And carry H935 (HiphImpf) these ten H6235 cheeses H2461 H2757 unto the captain H8269 of [their] thousand, H505 and look H6485 (QalImpf) how thy brethren H251 fare, H7965 and take H3947 (QalImpf) their pledge. H6161

and these ten cuttings of the cheese thou dost take in to the head of the thousand, and thy brethren thou dost inspect for welfare, and their pledge dost receive.’

David rose up early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper, and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. He came to the place of the wagons as the army which was going out to the fight shouted for the battle.

And David H1732 rose up early H7925 (HiphImpf) in the morning, H1242 and left H5203 (QalImpf) the sheep H6629 with a keeper, H8104 (QalActPtc) and took, H5375 (QalImpf) and went, H3212 (QalImpf) as Jesse H3448 had commanded H6680 (PielPerf) him; and he came H935 (QalImpf) to the trench, H4570 as the host H2428 was going forth H3318 (QalActPtc) to the fight, H4634 and shouted H7321 (HiphPerf) for the battle. And David riseth early in the morning, and leaveth the flock to a keeper, and lifteth up, and goeth, as Jesse commanded him, and he cometh in to the path, and to the force which is going out unto the rank, and they have shouted for battle;

David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.

And David letteth down the goods from off him on the hand of a keeper of the goods, and runneth into the rank, and cometh and asketh of his brethren of welfare.

David said to Saul, “Your servant was keeping his father’s sheep; and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock,

And David saith unto Saul, ‘A shepherd hath thy servant been to his father among the sheep, and the lion hath come-and the bear-and hath taken away a sheep out of the drove,

The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” The Philistine cursed David by his gods.

And the Philistine saith unto David, ‘Am I a dog that thou art coming unto me with staves?’ and the Philistine revileth David by his gods,

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

And David saith unto the Philistine, ‘Thou art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with buckler, and I am coming unto thee in the name of Jehovah of Hosts, God of the ranks of Israel, which thou hast reproached.

The men of Israel and of Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as Gai and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath and to Ekron.

And the men of Israel rise-also Judah-and shout, and pursue the Philistines till thou enter the valley, and unto the gates of Ekron, and the wounded of the Philistines fall in the way of Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron,

David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

And David taketh the head of the Philistine, and bringeth it in to Jerusalem, and his weapons he hath put in his own tent.

As David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

And when David turneth back from smiting the Philistine, then Abner taketh him and bringeth him in before Saul, and the head of the Philistine in his hand;

As they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul with tambourines, with joy, and with instruments of music.

And it cometh to pass, in their coming in, in David’s returning from smiting the Philistine, that the women come out from all the cities of Israel to sing-also the dancers-to meet Saul the king, with tabrets, with joy, and with three-stringed instruments;

Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

But all Israel and Judah loved David; for he went out and came in before them.

and all Israel and Judah love David when he is going out and coming in before them.

David arose and went, he and his men, and killed two hundred men of the Philistines. Then David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him Michal his daughter as wife.

and David riseth and goeth, he and his men, and smiteth among the Philistines two hundred men, and David bringeth in their foreskins, and they set them before the king, to be son-in-law to the king; and Saul giveth to him Michal his daughter for a wife.

Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before.

And Jonathan calleth for David, and Jonathan declareth to him all these words, and Jonathan bringeth in David unto Saul, and he is before him as heretofore.

When the messengers came in, behold, the teraphim was in the bed, with the pillow of goats’ hair at its head.

And when the messengers H4397 were come in, H935 (QalImpf) behold, [there was] an image H8655 in the bed, H4296 with a pillow H3523 of goats’ H5795 [hair] for his bolster. H4763

And the messengers come in, and lo, the teraphim are on the bed, and the mattress of goats’ hair, for his pillows.

Now David fled and escaped, and came to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. He and Samuel went and lived in Naioth.

And David hath fled, and is escaped, and cometh in unto Samuel to Ramath, and declareth to him all that Saul hath done to him, and he goeth, he and Samuel, and they dwell in Naioth.

Then he also went to Ramah, and came to the great well that is in Secu: and he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” One said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.”

And he goeth-he also-to Ramath, and cometh in unto the great well which is in Sechu, and asketh, and saith, ‘Where are Samuel and David?’ and one saith, ‘Lo, in Naioth in Ramah.’

He went there to Naioth in Ramah. Then God’s Spirit came on him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said to Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? What is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”

And David fleeth from Naioth in Ramah, and cometh, and saith before Jonathan, ‘What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what my sin before thy father, that he is seeking my life?’

Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you; but if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?”

Therefore thou shalt deal H6213 (QalPerf) kindly H2617 with thy servant; H5650 for thou hast brought H935 (HiphPerf) thy servant H5650 into a covenant H1285 of the Lord H3068 with thee: notwithstanding, if there be H3426 in me iniquity, H5771 slay H4191 (HiphImpv) me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring H935 (HiphImpf) me to thy father? and thou hast done kindness, to thy servant, for into a covenant of Jehovah thou hast brought thy servant with thee;-and if there is in me iniquity, put thou me to death; and unto thy father, why is this-thou dost bring me in?’

Jonathan said, “Far be it from you; for if I should at all know that evil were determined by my father to come on you, then wouldn’t I tell you that?”

And Jonathan H3083 said, H559 (QalImpf) Far be it from thee: H2486 for if I knew H3045 (QalImpf) certainly H3045 (QalInf) that evil H7451 were determined H3615 (QalPerf) by my father H1 to come H935 (QalInf) upon thee, then would not I tell H5046 (HiphImpf) it thee?

And Jonathan saith, ‘Far be it from thee! for I certainly do not know that the evil hath been determined by my father to come upon thee, and I do not declare it to thee.’

When you have stayed three days, go down quickly and come to the place where you hid yourself when this started, and remain by the stone Ezel.

And [when] thou hast stayed three days, H8027 (PielPerf) [then] thou shalt go down H3381 (QalImpf) quickly, H3966 and come H935 (QalPerf) to the place H4725 where thou didst hide H5641 (NiphPerf) thyself when H3117 the business H4639 was [in hand], and shalt remain H3427 (QalPerf) by H681 the stone H68 Ezel. and on the third day thou dost certainly come down, and hast come in unto the place where thou wast hidden in the day of the work, and hast remained near the stone Ezel.

Behold, I will send the boy, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows!’ If I tell the boy, ‘Behold, the arrows are on this side of you. Take them;’ then come, for there is peace to you and no danger, as Yahweh lives.

And, behold, I will send H7971 (QalImpf) a lad, H5288 [saying], Go, H3212 (QalImpv) find out H4672 (QalImpv) the arrows. H2671 If I expressly H559 (QalInf) say H559 (QalImpf) unto the lad, H5288 Behold, the arrows H2671 [are] on this side of thee, take H3947 (QalImpv) them; then come H935 (QalImpv) thou: for [there is] peace H7965 to thee, and no hurt; H1697 [as] the Lord H3068 liveth. and lo, I send the youth: Go, find the arrows. If I at all say to the youth, Lo, the arrows are on this side of thee-take them,-then come thou, for peace is for thee, and there is nothing; Jehovah liveth.

On the next day after the new moon, the second day, David’s place was empty. Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why didn’t the son of Jesse come to eat, either yesterday, or today?”

And it came to pass on the morrow, H4283 [which was] the second H8145 [day] of the month, H2320 that David’s H1732 place H4725 was empty: H6485 (NiphImpf) and Saul H7586 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Jonathan H3083 his son, H1121 Wherefore cometh H935 (QalPerf) not the son H1121 of Jesse H3448 to meat, H3899 neither yesterday, H8543 nor to day? H3117

And it cometh to pass on the second morrow of the new moon, that David’s place is looked after, and Saul saith unto Jonathan his son, ‘Wherefore hath the son of Jesse not come in, either yesterday or to-day, unto the food?’

He said, ‘Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city. My brother has commanded me to be there. Now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go away and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come to the king’s table.”

and he saith, Send me away, I pray thee, for a family sacrifice we have in the city, and my brother himself hath given command to me, and now, if I have found grace in thine eyes, let me go away, I pray thee, and see my brethren; therefore he hath not come unto the table of the king.’

When the boy had come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the boy, and said, “Isn’t the arrow beyond you?”

And when the lad H5288 was come H935 (QalImpf) to the place H4725 of the arrow H2678 which Jonathan H3083 had shot, H3384 (QalPerf) Jonathan H3083 cried H7121 (QalImpf) after H310 the lad, H5288 and said, H559 (QalImpf) [Is] not the arrow H2678 beyond H1973 thee?

And the youth cometh unto the place of the arrow which Jonathan hath shot, and Jonathan calleth after the youth, and saith, ‘Is not the arrow beyond thee?’

Jonathan cried after the boy, “Go fast! Hurry! Don’t delay!” Jonathan’s boy gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

and Jonathan calleth after the youth, ‘Speed, haste, stand not;’ and Jonathan’s youth gathereth the arrows, and cometh unto his lord.

Jonathan gave his weapons to his boy, and said to him, “Go, carry them to the city.”

And Jonathan giveth his weapons unto the youth whom he hath, and saith to him, ‘Go, carry into the city.’

As soon as the boy was gone, David arose out of the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times. They kissed one another and wept with one another, and David wept the most.

Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have both sworn in Yahweh’s name, saying, ‘Yahweh is between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’ ” He arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.

and Jonathan saith to David, ‘Go in peace, in that we have sworn-we two-in the name of Jehovah, saying, Jehovah is between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed-unto the age;’ and he riseth and goeth; and Jonathan hath gone in to the city.

Then David came to Nob to Ahimelech the priest. Ahimelech came to meet David trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no man with you?”

And David cometh in to Nob, unto Ahimelech the priest, and Ahimelech trembleth at meeting David, and saith to him, ‘Wherefore art thou thyself alone, and no man with thee?’

David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

And David riseth and fleeth on that day from the face of Saul, and cometh in unto Achish king of Gath;

Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you see the man is insane. Why then have you brought him to me?

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Achish H397 unto his servants, H5650 Lo, ye see H7200 (QalImpf) the man H376 is mad: H7696 (HithPtc) wherefore [then] have ye brought H935 (HiphImpf) him to me?

And Achish saith unto his servants, ‘Lo, ye see a man acting as a madman; why do ye bring him in unto me?

Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Should this fellow come into my house?”

A lack of madmen have I, that ye have brought in this one to act as a madman by me! doth this one come in unto my house?’

The prophet Gad said to David, “Don’t stay in the stronghold. Depart, and go into the land of Judah.” Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hereth.

And the prophet H5030 Gad H1410 said H559 (QalImpf) unto David, H1732 Abide H3427 (QalImpf) not in the hold; H4686 depart, H3212 (QalImpv) and get H935 (QalPerf) thee into the land H776 of Judah. And Gad the prophet saith unto David, ‘Thou dost not abide in a fortress, go, and thou hast entered for thee the land of Judah;’ and David goeth and entereth the forest of Hareth.

Then Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, answered and said, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

And answer doth Doeg the Edomite, who is set over the servants of Saul, and saith, ‘I have seen the son of Jesse coming in to Nob, unto Ahimelech son of Ahitub,

Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob; and they all came to the king.

And the king sendeth to call Ahimelech son of Ahitub, the priest, and all the house of his father, the priests, who are in Nob, and they come all of them unto the king;

Saul was told that David had come to Keilah. Saul said, “God has delivered him into my hand, for he is shut in by entering into a town that has gates and bars.”

And it was told H5046 (HophImpf) Saul H7586 that David H1732 was come H935 (QalPerf) to Keilah. H7084 And Saul H7586 said, H559 (QalImpf) God H430 hath delivered H5234 (PielPerf) him into mine hand; H3027 for he is shut in, H5462 (NiphPerf) by entering H935 (QalInf) into a town H5892 that hath gates H1817 and bars. H1280

And it is declared to Saul that David hath come in to Keilah, and Saul saith, ‘God hath made him known for my hand, for he hath been shut in, to enter into a city of doors and bar.’

Then David said, “O Yahweh, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah to destroy the city for my sake.

Then said H559 (QalImpf) David, H1732 O Lord H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 thy servant H5650 hath certainly H8085 (QalInf) heard H8085 (QalPerf) that Saul H7586 seeketh H1245 (PielPtc) to come H935 (QalInf) to Keilah, H7084 to destroy H7843 (PielInf) the city H5892 for my sake.

And David saith, ‘Jehovah, God of Israel, Thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul is seeking to come in unto Keilah, to destroy the city on mine account.

But a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid on the land!”

But there came H935 (QalPerf) a messenger H4397 unto Saul, H7586 saying, H559 (QalInf) Haste H4116 (PielImpv) thee, and come; H3212 (QalImpv) for the Philistines H6430 have invaded H6584 (QalPerf) the land. H776

And a messenger hath come in unto Saul, saying, ‘Haste, and come, for the Philistines have pushed against the land.’

He came to the sheep pens by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were staying in the innermost parts of the cave.

And he came H935 (QalImpf) to the sheepcotes H1448 H6629 by the way, H1870 where [was] a cave; H4631 and Saul H7586 went in H935 (QalImpf) to cover H5526 (HiphInf) his feet: H7272 and David H1732 and his men H582 remained H3427 (QalActPtc) in the sides H3411 of the cave. H4631

and he cometh in unto folds of the flock, on the way, and there is a cave, and Saul goeth in to cover his feet; and David and his men in the sides of the cave are abiding.

David sent ten young men; and David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name.

And David H1732 sent out H7971 (QalImpf) ten H6235 young men, H5288 and David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the young men, H5288 Get you up H5927 (QalImpv) to Carmel, H3760 and go H935 (QalPerf) to Nabal, H5037 and greet H7592 (QalPerf) H7965 him in my name: H8034

and David sendeth ten young men, and David saith to the young men, ‘Go ye up to Carmel, and ye have come in unto Nabal, and asked of him in my name of welfare,

Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let the young men find favor in your eyes, for we come on a good day. Please give whatever comes to your hand to your servants and to your son David.’ ”

‘Ask thy young men, and they declare to thee, and the young men find grace in thine eyes, for on a good day we have come; give, I pray thee, that which thy hand findeth, to thy servants, and to thy son, to David.’

When David’s young men came, they spoke to Nabal all those words in the name of David, and waited.

And when David’s H1732 young men H5288 came, H935 (QalImpf) they spake H1696 (PielImpf) to Nabal H5037 according to all those words H1697 in the name H8034 of David, H1732 and ceased. H5117 (QalImpf)

And the young men of David come in, and speak unto Nabal according to all these words, in the name of David-and rest.

So David’s young men turned on their way and went back, and came and told him all these words.

So David’s H1732 young men H5288 turned H2015 (QalImpf) their way, H1870 and went again, H7725 (QalImpf) and came H935 (QalImpf) and told H5046 (HiphImpf) him all those sayings. H1697

And the young men of David turn on their way, and turn back, and come in, and declare to him according to all these words.

She said to her young men, “Go on before me. Behold, I am coming after you.” But she didn’t tell her husband, Nabal.

And she said H559 (QalImpf) unto her servants, H5288 Go on H5674 (QalImpv) before H6440 me; behold, I come H935 (QalActPtc) after H310 you. But she told H5046 (HiphPerf) not her husband H376 Nabal. H5037

And she saith to her young men, ‘Pass over before me; lo, after you I am coming;’ and to her husband Nabal she hath not declared it;

Now therefore, my lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, since Yahweh has withheld you from blood guiltiness and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now therefore let your enemies and those who seek evil to my lord be as Nabal.

Now therefore, my lord, H113 [as] the Lord H3068 liveth, H2416 and [as] thy soul H5315 liveth, H2416 seeing the Lord H3068 hath withholden H4513 (QalPerf) thee from coming H935 (QalInf) to [shed] blood, H1818 and from avenging H3467 (HiphInf) thyself with thine own hand, H3027 now let thine enemies, H341 (QalActPtc) and they that seek H1245 (PielPtc) evil H7451 to my lord, H113 be as Nabal. and now, my lord, Jehovah liveth, and thy soul liveth, in that Jehovah hath withheld thee from coming in with blood, and to save thy hand to thee-now let thine enemies be as Nabal, even those seeking evil unto my lord.
