In those days, the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. Achish said to David, “Know assuredly that you will go out with me in the army, you and your men.”

And it came to pass in those days, H3117 that the Philistines H6430 gathered H6908 their armies H4264 together H6908 (QalImpf) for warfare, H6635 to fight H3898 (NiphInf) with Israel. H3478 And Achish H397 said H559 (QalImpf) unto David, H1732 Know H3045 (QalImpf) thou assuredly, H3045 (QalInf) that thou shalt go out H3318 (QalImpf) with me to battle, H4264 thou and thy men. H582

And it cometh to pass in those days, that the Philistines gather their camps for the war, to fight against Israel, and Achish saith unto David, ‘Thou dost certainly know that with me thou dost go out into the camp, thou and thy men.’

Saul disguised himself and put on other clothing, and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night. Then he said, “Please consult for me by the familiar spirit, and bring me up whomever I shall name to you.”

And Saul disguiseth himself and putteth on other garments, and goeth, he and two of the men with him, and they come in unto the woman by night, and he saith, ‘Divine, I pray thee, to me by the familiar spirit, and cause to come up to me him whom I say unto thee.’

He said to her, “What does he look like?” She said, “An old man comes up. He is covered with a robe.” Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground, and showed respect.

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto her, What form H8389 [is] he of? And she said, H559 (QalImpf) An old H2205 man H376 cometh up; H5927 (QalActPtc) and he [is] covered H5844 (QalActPtc) with a mantle. And he saith to her, ‘What is his form?’ and she saith, ‘An aged man is coming up, and he is covered with an upper robe;’ and Saul knoweth that he is Samuel, and boweth-face to thee earth-and doth obeisance.

The lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds and by thousands; and David and his men passed on in the rear with Achish.

And the lords H5633 of the Philistines H6430 passed on H5674 (QalActPtc) by hundreds, H3967 and by thousands: H505 but David H1732 and his men H582 passed on H5674 (QalActPtc) in the rereward H314 with Achish. H397

and the princes of the Philistines are passing on by hundreds, and by thousands, and David and his men are passing on in the rear with Achish.

But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; and the princes of the Philistines said to him, “Make the man return, that he may go back to his place where you have appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he become an adversary to us. For with what should this fellow reconcile himself to his lord? Should it not be with the heads of these men?

And the heads of the Philistines are wroth against him, and the heads of the Philistines say to him, ‘Send back the man, and he doth turn back unto his place whither thou hast appointed him, and doth not go down with us into battle, and is not to us for an adversary in battle; and wherewith doth this one reconcile himself unto his lord-is it not with the heads of those men?’

So David rose up early, he and his men, to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines; and the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

And David riseth early, he and his men, to go in the morning, to turn back unto the land of the Philistines, and the Philistines have gone up to Jezreel.

When David and his men had come to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid on the South and on Ziklag, and had struck Ziklag and burned it with fire,

And it came to pass, when David H1732 and his men H582 were come H935 (QalInf) to Ziklag H6860 on the third H7992 day, H3117 that the Amalekites H6003 had invaded H6584 (QalPerf) the south, H5045 and Ziklag, H6860 and smitten H5221 (HiphImpf) Ziklag, H6860 and burned H8313 (QalImpf) it with fire; H784

And it cometh to pass, in the coming in of David and his men to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites have pushed unto the south, and unto Ziklag, and smite Ziklag, and burn it with fire,

and had taken captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great. They didn’t kill any, but carried them off and went their way.

and they take captive the women who are in it; from small unto great they have not put any one to death, and they lead away, and go on their way.

When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters were taken captive.

David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the souls of all the people were grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters; but David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God.

And David goeth on, he and six hundred men who are with him, and they come in unto the brook of Besor, and those left have stood still,

But David pursued, he and four hundred men; for two hundred stayed behind, who were so faint that they couldn’t go over the brook Besor.

They found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he ate; and they gave him water to drink.

and they find a man, an Egyptian, in the field, and take him unto David, and give to him bread, and he eateth, and they cause him to drink water,

David asked him, “To whom do you belong? Where are you from?” He said, “I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days ago I got sick.

And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, To whom [belongest] thou? and whence [art] thou? And he said, H559 (QalImpf) I [am] a young man H5288 of Egypt, H4713 servant H5650 to an Amalekite; H376 H6003 and my master H113 left H5800 (QalImpf) me, because three H7969 days H3117 agone I fell sick. And David saith to him, ‘Whose art thou? and whence art thou?’ And he saith, ‘An Egyptian youth I am, servant to a man, an Amalekite, and my lord forsaketh me, for I have been sick three days,

David struck them from the twilight even to the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped from there, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled.

And David H1732 smote H5221 (HiphImpf) them from the twilight H5399 even unto the evening H6153 of the next day: H4283 and there escaped H4422 (NiphPerf) not a man H376 of them, save four H702 hundred H3967 young H5288 men, H376 which rode H7392 (QalPerf) upon camels, H1581 and fled. And David smiteth them from the twilight even unto the evening of the morrow, and there hath not escaped of them a man, except four hundred young men who have ridden on the camels, and are fled.

David came to the two hundred men, who were so faint that they could not follow David, whom also they had made to stay at the brook Besor; and they went out to meet David, and to meet the people who were with him. When David came near to the people, he greeted them.

And David cometh in unto the two hundred men who were too faint to go after David, and whom they cause to abide at the brook of Besor, and they go out to meet David, and to meet the people who are with him, and David approacheth the people, and asketh of them of welfare.

Then all the wicked men and worthless fellows of those who went with David answered and said, “Because they didn’t go with us, we will not give them anything of the plunder that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that he may lead them away and depart.”

Then answered H6030 (QalImpf) all the wicked H7451 men H376 and [men] of Belial, H1100 of those H582 that went H1980 (QalPerf) with David, H1732 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Because they went H1980 (QalPerf) not with us, we will not give H5414 (QalImpf) them [ought] of the spoil H7998 that we have recovered, H5337 (HiphPerf) save to every man H376 his wife H802 and his children, H1121 that they may lead [them] away, H5090 (QalImpf) and depart. And every bad and worthless man, of the men who have gone with David, answereth, yea, they say, ‘Because that they have not gone with us we do not give to them of the spoil which we have delivered, except each his wife and his children, and they lead away and go.

to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men used to stay.

And to [them] which [were] in Hebron, H2275 and to all the places H4725 where David H1732 himself and his men H582 were wont to haunt. H1980 (HithPerf)

and to those in Hebron, and to all the places where David had gone up and down, he and his men.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa.

Now the Philistines H6430 fought H3898 (NiphPtc) against Israel: H3478 and the men H582 of Israel H3478 fled H5127 (QalImpf) from before H6440 the Philistines, H6430 and fell down H5307 (QalImpf) slain H2491 in mount H2022 Gilboa. H1533

And the Philistines are fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel flee from the face of the Philistines, and fall wounded in mount Gilboa,

The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was greatly distressed by reason of the archers.

And the battle H4421 went sore H3513 (QalImpf) against Saul, H7586 and the archers H3384 (HiphPtc) H582 H7198 hit H4672 (QalImpf) him; and he was sore H3966 wounded H2342 (QalImpf) of the archers. H3384 (HiphPtc) H582 H7198

And the battle is hard against Saul, and the archers find him-men with bow-and he is pained greatly by the archers;

So Saul died with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men that same day together.

So Saul H7586 died, H4191 (QalImpf) and his three H7969 sons, H1121 and his armourbearer, H5375 (QalActPtc) H3627 and all his men, H582 that same day H3117 together. H3162

and Saul dieth, and three of his sons, and the bearer of his weapons, also all his men, on that day together.

When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them.

And when the men H582 of Israel H3478 that [were] on the other side H5676 of the valley, H6010 and [they] that [were] on the other side H5676 Jordan, H3383 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that the men H582 of Israel H3478 fled, H5127 (QalPerf) and that Saul H7586 and his sons H1121 were dead, H4191 (QalPerf) they forsook H5800 (QalImpf) the cities, H5892 and fled; H5127 (QalImpf) and the Philistines H6430 came H935 (QalImpf) and dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) in them.

And they see-the men of Israel, who are beyond the valley, and who are beyond the Jordan-that the men of Israel have fled, and that Saul and his sons have died, and they forsake the cities and flee, and Philistines come in, and dwell in them.

all the valiant men arose, went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh and burned them there.

and all the men of valour arise, and go all the night, and take the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Beth-Shan, and come in to Jabesh, and burn them there,

on the third day, behold,^§ a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth and showed respect.

2 Samuel 1:2 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

and it cometh to pass, on the third day, that lo, a man hath come in out of the camp from Saul, and his garments are rent, and earth on his head; and it cometh to pass, in his coming in unto David, that he falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance.

Then David took hold on his clothes and tore them; and all the men who were with him did likewise.

Then David H1732 took hold H2388 (HiphImpf) on his clothes, H899 and rent H7167 (QalImpf) them; and likewise all the men H582 that [were] with him:

And David taketh hold on his garments, and rendeth them, and also all the men who are with him,

David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?” He answered, “I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite.”

David brought up his men who were with him, every man with his household. They lived in the cities of Hebron.

and his men who are with him hath David brought up-a man and his household-and they dwell in the cities of Hebron.

The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, “The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul.”

And the men H582 of Judah H3063 came, H935 (QalImpf) and there they anointed H4886 (QalImpf) David H1732 king H4428 over the house H1004 of Judah. And the men of Judah come, and anoint there David for king over the house of Judah; and they declare to David, saying, ‘The men of Jabesh-Gilead are they who buried Saul.’

David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, “Blessed are you by Yahweh, that you have shown this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him.

And David H1732 sent H7971 (QalImpf) messengers H4397 unto the men H582 of Jabeshgilead, H3003 H1568 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, Blessed H1288 (QalPasPtc) [be] ye of the Lord, H3068 that ye have shewed H6213 (QalPerf) this kindness H2617 unto your lord, H113 [even] unto Saul, H7586 and have buried H6912 (QalImpf) him.

And David sendeth messengers unto the men of Jabesh-Gilead, and saith unto them, ‘Blessed are ye of Jehovah, in that ye have done this kindness with your lord, with Saul, that ye bury him.

They each caught his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place in Gibeon was called Helkath Hazzurim.°

2 Samuel 2:16 “Helkath Hazzurim” means “field of daggers”.

And they caught H2388 (HiphImpf) every one H376 his fellow H7453 by the head, H7218 and [thrust] his sword H2719 in his fellow’s H7453 side; H6654 so they fell down H5307 (QalImpf) together: H3162 wherefore that place H4725 was called H7121 (QalImpf) Helkathhazzurim, H2521 which [is] in Gibeon. And they lay hold, each on the head of his companion, and his sword is in the side of his companion, and they fall together, and one calleth that place Helkath-Hazzurim, which is in Gibeon,

The battle was very severe that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before David’s servants.

And there was a very H3966 sore H7186 battle H4421 that day; H3117 and Abner H74 was beaten, H5062 (NiphImpf) and the men H582 of Israel, H3478 before H6440 the servants H5650 of David. H1732

and the battle is very hard on that day, and Abner is smitten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

Joab said, “As God^§ lives, if you had not spoken, surely then in the morning the people would have gone away, and not each followed his brother.”

And Joab saith, ‘God liveth! for unless thou hadst spoken, surely then from the morning had the people gone up each from after his brother.’

Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.

And Abner and his men have gone through the plain all that night, and pass over the Jordan, and go on through all Bithron, and come in to Mahanaim.

Joab returned from following Abner; and when he had gathered all the people together, nineteen men of David’s and Asahel were missing.

And Joab hath turned back from after Abner, and gathereth all the people, and there are lacking of the servants of David nineteen men, and Asahel;

But David’s servants had struck Benjamin Abner’s men so that three hundred sixty men died.

But the servants H5650 of David H1732 had smitten H5221 (HiphPerf) of Benjamin, H1144 and of Abner’s H74 men, H582 [so that] three H7969 hundred H3967 and threescore H8346 men H376 died. H4191 (QalPerf)

and the servants of David have smitten of Benjamin, even among the men of Abner, three hundred and sixty men-they died.

They took up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Bethlehem. Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.

And they lift up Asahel, and bury him in the burying-place of his father, which is in Beth-Lehem, and they go all the night-Joab and his men-and it is light to them in Hebron.

Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, Paltiel the son of Laish.

And Ish-Bosheth sendeth, and taketh her from a man, from Phaltiel son of Laish,

Her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, “Go! Return!” and he returned.

So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. David made Abner and the men who were with him a feast.

and Abner cometh in unto David, to Hebron, and with him twenty men, and David maketh for Abner, and for the men who are with him, a banquet.

I am weak today, though anointed king. These men, the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. May Yahweh reward the evildoer according to his wickedness.”

and I to-day am tender, and an anointed king: and these men, sons of Zeruiah, are too hard for me; Jehovah doth recompense to the doer of the evil according to his evil.’

How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house on his bed, should I not now require his blood from your hand, and rid the earth of you?”

Also-when wicked men have slain the righteous man in his own house, on his bed; and now, do not I require his blood of your hand, and have taken you away from the earth?’

The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, “The blind and the lame will keep you out of here,” thinking, “David can’t come in here.”

When the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck twenty two thousand men of the Syrians.

And Aram of Damascus cometh to give help to Hadadezer king of Zobah, and David smiteth of Aram twenty and two thousand men;

then Toi sent Joram his son to King David to greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and struck him; for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. Joram brought with him vessels of silver, vessels of gold, and vessels of bronze.
