Yahweh’s angel came and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. His son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites.

Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes of an ephah° of meal. He put the meat in a basket and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.

Gideon saw that he was Yahweh’s angel; and Gideon said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh! Because I have seen Yahweh’s angel face to face!”

Then Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh, and called it “Yahweh is Peace.”^§ To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Judges 6:24 that is, The LORD send peace

Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. Midian’s camp was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel brag against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’

και ειπεν κυριος προς γεδεων πολυς ο λαος ο μετα σου ωστε μη παραδουναι με την μαδιαμ εν χειρι αυτων μηποτε καυχησηται ισραηλ επ εμε λεγων η χειρ μου εσωσεν με

Yahweh said to Gideon, “There are still too many people. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. It shall be, that those whom I tell you, ‘This shall go with you,’ shall go with you; and whoever I tell you, ‘This shall not go with you,’ shall not go.”

και ειπεν κυριος προς γεδεων ετι ο λαος πολυς καταγαγε αυτους εις το υδωρ και δοκιμω αυτους σοι εκει και εσται ον εαν ειπω προς σε ουτος πορευσεται μετα σου αυτος πορευσεται μετα σου και ον εαν ειπω σοι οτι ου πορευσεται μετα σου αυτος ου πορευσεται μετα σου

So he brought down the people to the water; and Yahweh said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, like a dog laps, you shall set him by himself; likewise everyone who bows down on his knees to drink.”

Yahweh said to Gideon, “I will save you by the three hundred men who lapped, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Gideon, H1439 By the three H7969 hundred H3967 men H376 that lapped H3952 (PielPtc) will I save H3467 (HiphImpf) you, and deliver H5414 (QalPerf) the Midianites H4080 into thine hand: H3027 and let all the other people H5971 go H3212 (QalImpf) every man H376 unto his place. και ειπεν κυριος προς γεδεων εν τοις τριακοσιοις ανδρασιν τοις λαψασιν σωσω υμας και παραδωσω την μαδιαμ εν χειρι σου και πας ο λαος αποτρεχετω ανηρ εις τον τοπον αυτου

When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow. He said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”

His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.”

It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. Then he returned into the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for Yahweh has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!”

And it was so, when Gideon H1439 heard H8085 (QalInf) the telling H4557 of the dream, H2472 and the interpretation H7667 thereof,^§ that he worshipped, H7812 (HithImpf) and returned H7725 (QalImpf) into the host H4264 of Israel, H3478 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Arise; H6965 (QalImpv) for the Lord H3068 hath delivered H5414 (QalPerf) into your hand H3027 the host H4264 of Midian. Judges 7:15 Heb. the breaking thereof

και εγενετο ως ηκουσεν γεδεων την διηγησιν του ενυπνιου και την συγκρισιν αυτου και προσεκυνησεν κυριον και επεστρεψεν εις την παρεμβολην ισραηλ και ειπεν αναστητε οτι παρεδωκεν κυριος εν χερσιν υμων την παρεμβολην μαδιαμν

When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and shout, ‘For Yahweh and for Gideon!’ ”

So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch. Then they blew the trumpets and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.

The three companies blew the trumpets, broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they shouted, “The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon!”

και εσαλπισαν αι τρεις αρχαι εν ταις κερατιναις και συνετριψαν τας υδριας και ελαβοντο εν τη χειρι τη αριστερα αυτων των λαμπαδων και εν τη χειρι τη δεξια αυτων αι κερατιναι του σαλπιζειν και ανεκραξαν ρομφαια τω κυριω και τω γεδεων

Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against Midian and take the waters before them as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan!” So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together and took the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan.

And Gideon H1439 sent H7971 (QalPerf) messengers H4397 throughout all mount H2022 Ephraim, H669 saying, H559 (QalInf) Come down H3381 (QalImpv) against H7125 (QalInf) the Midianites, H4080 and take H3920 (QalImpv) before them the waters H4325 unto Beth-barah H1012 and Jordan. και αγγελους εξαπεστειλεν γεδεων εν παντι οριω εφραιμ λεγων καταβητε εις συναντησιν μαδιαμ και καταλαβετε εαυτοις το υδωρ εως βαιθβηρα και τον ιορδανην και εβοησεν πας ανηρ εφραιμ και προκατελαβοντο το υδωρ εως βαιθβηρα και τον ιορδανην

They took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at Oreb’s rock, and Zeeb they killed at Zeeb’s wine press, as they pursued Midian. Then they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.

And they took H3920 (QalImpf) two H8147 princes H8269 of the Midianites, H4080 Oreb H6159 and Zeeb; H2062 and they slew H2026 (QalImpf) Oreb H6159 upon the rock H6697 Oreb, H6159 and Zeeb H2062 they slew H2026 (QalPerf) at the winepress H3342 of Zeeb, H2062 and pursued H7291 (QalImpf) Midian, H4080 and brought H935 (HiphPerf) the heads H7218 of Oreb H6159 and Zeeb H2062 to Gideon H1439 on the other side H5676 Jordan. και συνελαβον τους δυο αρχοντας μαδιαμ τον ωρηβ και τον ζηβ και απεκτειναν τον ωρηβ εν σουριν και τον ζηβ απεκτειναν εν ιακεφζηβ και κατεδιωξαν μαδιαμ και την κεφαλην ωρηβ και ζηβ ηνεγκαν προς γεδεων εκ του περαν του ιορδανου

Gideon came to the Jordan and passed over, he and the three hundred men who were with him, faint, yet pursuing.

And Gideon H1439 came H935 (QalImpf) to Jordan, H3383 and passed over, H5674 (QalActPtc) he, and the three H7969 hundred H3967 men H376 that were with him, faint, H5889 yet pursuing H7291 (QalActPtc) them.

και ηλθεν γεδεων επι τον ιορδανην και διεβη αυτος και οι τριακοσιοι ανδρες μετ αυτου ολιγοψυχουντες και πεινωντες

Gideon said, “Therefore when Yahweh has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.”

And Gideon H1439 said, H559 (QalImpf) Therefore when the Lord H3068 hath delivered H5414 (QalInf) Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 into mine hand, H3027 then I will tear^§ H1758 (QalPerf) your flesh H1320 with the thorns H6975 of the wilderness H4057 and with briers. H1303

και ειπεν γεδεων ουχ ουτως εν τω δουναι κυριον τον ζεβεε και σαλμανα εν τη χειρι μου και καταξανω τας σαρκας υμων εν ταις ακανθαις της ερημου και εν ταις βαρκοννιμ

Gideon went up by the way of those who lived in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and struck the army; for the army felt secure.

Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.

και ανεστρεψεν γεδεων υιος ιωας εκ του πολεμου απο αναβασεως αρες

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “You rise and fall on us; for as the man is, so is his strength.” Gideon arose, and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels’ necks.

Then Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 said, H559 (QalImpf) Rise H6965 (QalImpv) thou, and fall H6293 (QalImpv) upon us: for as the man H376 is, so is his strength. Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, both you, your son, and your son’s son also; for you have saved us out of the hand of Midian.”

Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you. Yahweh shall rule over you.”
