Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,

και ελαλησεν μωυσης και ελεαζαρ ο ιερευς εν αραβωθ μωαβ επι του ιορδανου κατα ιεριχω λεγων

These are those who were counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who counted the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

These [are] they that were numbered H6485 (QalPasPtc) by Moses H4872 and Eleazar H499 the priest, H3548 who numbered H6485 (QalPerf) the children H1121 of Israel H3478 in the plains H6160 of Moab H4124 by Jordan H3383 [near] Jericho. H3405

και αυτη η επισκεψις μωυση και ελεαζαρ του ιερεως οι επεσκεψαντο τους υιους ισραηλ εν αραβωθ μωαβ επι του ιορδανου κατα ιεριχω

They brought the captives with the prey and the plunder, to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan at Jericho.

They traveled from the mountains of Abarim, and encamped in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sunrise.”

These are the commandments and the ordinances which Yahweh commanded by Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

“Go up into this mountain of Abarim, to Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is across from Jericho; and see the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel for a possession.

Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is opposite Jericho. Yahweh showed him all the land of Gilead to Dan,

Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, including Jericho.” They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there.

The king of Jericho was told, “Behold,^§ men of the children of Israel came in here tonight to spy out the land.”

Joshua 2:2 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

Jericho’s king sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered into your house; for they have come to spy out all the land.”

και εστη τα υδατα τα καταβαινοντα ανωθεν εστη πηγμα εν αφεστηκος μακραν σφοδρα σφοδρως εως μερους καριαθιαριμ το δε καταβαινον κατεβη εις την θαλασσαν αραβα θαλασσαν αλος εως εις το τελος εξελιπεν και ο λαος ειστηκει απεναντι ιεριχω

About forty thousand men, ready and armed for war, passed over before Yahweh to battle, to the plains of Jericho.

τετρακισμυριοι ευζωνοι εις μαχην διεβησαν εναντιον κυριου εις πολεμον προς την ιεριχω πολιν

The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho.

The children of Israel encamped in Gilgal. They kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

και εποιησαν οι υιοι ισραηλ το πασχα τη τεσσαρεσκαιδεκατη ημερα του μηνος απο εσπερας επι δυσμων ιεριχω εν τω περαν του ιορδανου εν τω πεδιω

When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man stood in front of him with his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our enemies?”

And it came to pass, when Joshua H3091 was by Jericho, H3405 that he lifted up H5375 (QalImpf) his eyes H5869 and looked, H7200 (QalImpf) and, behold, there stood H5975 (QalActPtc) a man H376 over against him with his sword H2719 drawn H8025 (QalPasPtc) in his hand: H3027 and Joshua H3091 went H3212 (QalImpf) unto him, and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, [Art] thou for us, or for our adversaries? και εγενετο ως ην ιησους εν ιεριχω και αναβλεψας τοις οφθαλμοις ειδεν ανθρωπον εστηκοτα εναντιον αυτου και η ρομφαια εσπασμενη εν τη χειρι αυτου και προσελθων ιησους ειπεν αυτω ημετερος ει η των υπεναντιων

Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the children of Israel. No one went out, and no one came in.

Now Jericho H3405 was straitly H5462 (QalActPtc) shut up H5462 (PualPtc) because H6440 of the children H1121 of Israel: H3478 none went out, H3318 (QalActPtc) and none came in. H935 (QalActPtc)

και ιεριχω συγκεκλεισμενη και ωχυρωμενη και ουθεις εξεπορευετο εξ αυτης ουδε εισεπορευετο

Yahweh said to Joshua, “Behold, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty men of valor.

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Joshua, H3091 See, H7200 (QalImpv) I have given H5414 (QalPerf) into thine hand H3027 Jericho, H3405 and the king H4428 thereof, [and] the mighty men H1368 of valour. H2428

και ειπεν κυριος προς ιησουν ιδου εγω παραδιδωμι υποχειριον σου την ιεριχω και τον βασιλεα αυτης τον εν αυτη δυνατους οντας εν ισχυι

But Rahab the prostitute, her father’s household, and all that she had, Joshua saved alive. She lives in the middle of Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

And Joshua H3091 saved H2421 Rahab H7343 the harlot H2181 (QalActPtc) alive, H2421 (HiphPerf) and her father’s H1 household, H1004 and all that she had; and she dwelleth H3427 (QalImpf) in H7130 Israel H3478 [even] unto this day; H3117 because she hid H2244 (HiphPerf) the messengers, H4397 which Joshua H3091 sent H7971 (QalPerf) to spy out H7270 (PielInf) Jericho. H3405

και ρααβ την πορνην και παντα τον οικον τον πατρικον αυτης εζωγρησεν ιησους και κατωκησεν εν τω ισραηλ εως της σημερον ημερας διοτι εκρυψεν τους κατασκοπευσαντας ους απεστειλεν ιησους κατασκοπευσαι την ιεριχω

Joshua commanded them with an oath at that time, saying, “Cursed is the man before Yahweh who rises up and builds this city Jericho. With the loss of his firstborn he will lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngest son he will set up its gates.”

And Joshua H3091 adjured H7650 (HiphImpf) [them] at that time, H6256 saying, H559 (QalInf) Cursed H779 (QalPasPtc) [be] the man H376 before H6440 the Lord, H3068 that riseth up H6965 (QalImpf) and buildeth H1129 (QalPerf) this city H5892 Jericho: H3405 he shall lay the foundation H3245 (PielImpf) thereof in his firstborn, H1060 and in his youngest H6810 [son] shall he set up H5324 (HiphImpf) the gates H1817 of it.

και ωρκισεν ιησους εν τη ημερα εκεινη εναντιον κυριου λεγων επικαταρατος ο ανθρωπος ος οικοδομησει την πολιν εκεινην εν τω πρωτοτοκω αυτου θεμελιωσει αυτην και εν τω ελαχιστω αυτου επιστησει τας πυλας αυτης και ουτως εποιησεν οζαν ο εκ βαιθηλ εν τω αβιρων τω πρωτοτοκω εθεμελιωσεν αυτην και εν τω ελαχιστω διασωθεντι επεστησεν τας πυλας αυτης

Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the land.” The men went up and spied out Ai.

And Joshua H3091 sent H7971 (QalImpf) men H582 from Jericho H3405 to Ai, H5857 which [is] beside H5973 Bethaven, H1007 on the east side H6924 of Bethel, H1008 and spake H559 (QalImpf) unto them, saying, H559 (QalInf) Go up H5927 (QalImpv) and view H7270 (PielImpv) the country. H776 And the men H582 went up H5927 (QalImpf) and viewed H7270 (PielImpf) Ai. H5857

You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except you shall take its goods and its livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”

And thou shalt do H6213 (QalPerf) to Ai H5857 and her king H4428 as thou didst H6213 (QalPerf) unto Jericho H3405 and her king: H4428 only the spoil H7998 thereof, and the cattle H929 thereof, shall ye take for a prey H962 (QalImpf) unto yourselves: lay H7760 (QalImpv) thee an ambush H693 (QalActPtc) for the city H5892 behind H310 it.

και ποιησεις την γαι ον τροπον εποιησας την ιεριχω και τον βασιλεα αυτης και την προνομην των κτηνων προνομευσεις σεαυτω καταστησον δε σεαυτω ενεδρα τη πολει εις τα οπισω

But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,

And when the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of Gibeon H1391 heard H8085 (QalPerf) what Joshua H3091 had done H6213 (QalPerf) unto Jericho H3405 and to Ai, H5857

και οι κατοικουντες γαβαων ηκουσαν παντα οσα εποιησεν κυριος τη ιεριχω και τη γαι

Now when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them,

Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek H139 king H4428 of Jerusalem H3389 had heard H8085 (QalInf) how H3588 Joshua H3091 had taken H3920 (QalPerf) Ai, H5857 and had utterly destroyed H2763 (HiphImpf) it; as he had done H6213 (QalPerf) to Jericho H3405 and her king, H4428 so he had done H6213 (QalPerf) to Ai H5857 and her king; H4428 and how the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of Gibeon H1391 had made peace H7999 (HiphPerf) with Israel, H3478 and were among H7130 them;

ως δε ηκουσεν αδωνιβεζεκ βασιλευς ιερουσαλημ οτι ελαβεν ιησους την γαι και εξωλεθρευσεν αυτην ον τροπον εποιησαν την ιεριχω και τον βασιλεα αυτης ουτως εποιησαν την γαι και τον βασιλεα αυτης και οτι αυτομολησαν οι κατοικουντες γαβαων προς ιησουν και προς ισραηλ

Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with its king. He utterly destroyed it and all the souls who were in it. He left no one remaining. He did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.

And that day H3117 Joshua H3091 took H3920 (QalPerf) Makkedah, H4719 and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) it with the edge H6310 of the sword, H2719 and the king H4428 thereof he utterly destroyed, H2763 (HiphPerf) them, and all the souls H5315 that [were] therein; he let H7604 (HiphPerf) none remain: H8300 and he did H6213 (QalImpf) to the king H4428 of Makkedah H4719 as he did H6213 (QalPerf) unto the king H4428 of Jericho. H3405

και την μακηδα ελαβοσαν εν τη ημερα εκεινη και εφονευσαν αυτην εν στοματι ξιφους και εξωλεθρευσαν παν εμπνεον εν αυτη και ου κατελειφθη εν αυτη ουδεις διασεσωσμενος και διαπεφευγως και εποιησαν τω βασιλει μακηδα ον τροπον εποιησαν τω βασιλει ιεριχω

Yahweh delivered it also, with its king, into the hand of Israel. He struck it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls who were in it. He left no one remaining in it. He did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.

And the Lord H3068 delivered H5414 (QalImpf) it also, and the king H4428 thereof, into the hand H3027 of Israel; H3478 and he smote H5221 (HiphImpf) it with the edge H6310 of the sword, H2719 and all the souls H5315 that [were] therein; he let H7604 (HiphPerf) none remain H8300 in it; but did H6213 (QalImpf) unto the king H4428 thereof as he did H6213 (QalPerf) unto the king H4428 of Jericho. και παρεδωκεν αυτην κυριος εις χειρας ισραηλ και ελαβον αυτην και τον βασιλεα αυτης και εφονευσαν αυτην εν στοματι ξιφους και παν εμπνεον εν αυτη και ου κατελειφθη εν αυτη ουδε εις διασεσωσμενος και διαπεφευγως και εποιησαν τω βασιλει αυτης ον τροπον εποιησαν τω βασιλει ιεριχω

The lot came out for the children of Joseph from the Jordan at Jericho, at the waters of Jericho on the east, even the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill country to Bethel.

And the lot H1486 of the children H1121 of Joseph H3130 fell H3318 (QalImpf) from Jordan H3383 by Jericho, H3405 unto the water H4325 of Jericho H3405 on the east, H4217 to the wilderness H4057 that goeth up H5927 (QalActPtc) from Jericho H3405 throughout mount H2022 Bethel, H1008

και εγενετο τα ορια υιων ιωσηφ απο του ιορδανου του κατα ιεριχω απ ανατολων και αναβησεται απο ιεριχω εις την ορεινην την ερημον εις βαιθηλ λουζα

It went down from Janoah to Ataroth, to Naarah, reached to Jericho, and went out at the Jordan.

And it went down H3381 (QalPerf) from Janohah H3239 to Ataroth, H5852 and to Naarath, H5292 and came H6293 (QalPerf) to Jericho, H3405 and went out H3318 (QalPerf) at Jordan. H3383

και εις μαχω και αταρωθ και αι κωμαι αυτων και ελευσεται επι ιεριχω και διεκβαλει επι τον ιορδανην

Their border on the north quarter was from the Jordan. The border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the hill country westward. It ended at the wilderness of Beth Aven.

And their border H1366 on the north H6828 side H6285 was from Jordan; H3383 and the border H1366 went up H5927 (QalPerf) to the side H3802 of Jericho H3405 on the north H6828 side, and went up H5927 (QalPerf) through the mountains H2022 westward; H3220 and the goings out H8444 thereof were at the wilderness H4057 of Bethaven. Beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness in the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

And on the other side H5676 Jordan H3383 by Jericho H3405 eastward, H4217 they assigned H5414 (QalPerf) Bezer H1221 in the wilderness H4057 upon the plain H4334 out of the tribe H4294 of Reuben, H7205 and Ramoth H7216 in Gilead H1568 out of the tribe H4294 of Gad, H1410 and Golan H1474 in Bashan H1316 out of the tribe H4294 of Manasseh. και εν τω περαν του ιορδανου εδωκεν βοσορ εν τη ερημω εν τω πεδιω απο της φυλης ρουβην και αρημωθ εν τη γαλααδ εκ της φυλης γαδ και την γαυλων εν τη βασανιτιδι εκ της φυλης μανασση

“ ‘You went over the Jordan, and came to Jericho. The men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.

και διεβητε τον ιορδανην και παρεγενηθητε εις ιεριχω και επολεμησαν προς υμας οι κατοικουντες ιεριχω ο αμορραιος και ο χαναναιος και ο φερεζαιος και ο ευαιος και ο ιεβουσαιος και ο χετταιος και ο γεργεσαιος και παρεδωκεν αυτους κυριος εις τας χειρας υμων

When they told David this, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”

και ανηγγειλαν τω δαυιδ υπερ των ανδρων και απεστειλεν εις απαντην αυτων οτι ησαν οι ανδρες ητιμασμενοι σφοδρα και ειπεν ο βασιλευς καθισατε εν ιεριχω εως του ανατειλαι τους πωγωνας υμων και επιστραφησεσθε

In his days Hiel the Bethelite built Jericho. He laid its foundation with the loss of Abiram his firstborn, and set up its gates with the loss of his youngest son Segub, according to Yahweh’s word, which he spoke by Joshua the son of Nun.

εν ταις ημεραις αυτου ωκοδομησεν αχιηλ ο βαιθηλιτης την ιεριχω εν τω αβιρων τω πρωτοτοκω αυτου εθεμελιωσεν αυτην και τω σεγουβ τω νεωτερω αυτου επεστησεν θυρας αυτης κατα το ρημα κυριου ο ελαλησεν εν χειρι ιησου υιου ναυη

Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me to Jericho.” He said, “As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho.

και ειπεν ηλιου προς ελισαιε καθου δη ενταυθα οτι κυριος απεσταλκεν με εις ιεριχω και ειπεν ελισαιε ζη κυριος και ζη η ψυχη σου ει εγκαταλειψω σε και ηλθον εις ιεριχω

The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho came near to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh will take away your master from over you today?” He answered, “Yes, I know it. Hold your peace.”

και ηγγισαν οι υιοι των προφητων οι εν ιεριχω προς ελισαιε και ειπαν προς αυτον ει εγνως οτι σημερον λαμβανει κυριος τον κυριον σου επανωθεν της κεφαλης σου και ειπεν και γε εγω εγνων σιωπατε

When the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho facing him saw him, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” They came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

And when the sons H1121 of the prophets H5030 which [were] to view at Jericho H3405 saw H7200 (QalImpf) him, they said, H559 (QalImpf) The spirit H7307 of Elijah H452 doth rest H5117 (QalPerf) on Elisha. και ειδον αυτον οι υιοι των προφητων οι εν ιεριχω εξ εναντιας και ειπον επαναπεπαυται το πνευμα ηλιου επι ελισαιε και ηλθον εις συναντην αυτου και προσεκυνησαν αυτω επι την γην

They came back to him while he stayed at Jericho; and he said to them, “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t go’?”

And when they came again H7725 (QalImpf) to him, (for he tarried H3427 (QalActPtc) at Jericho, H3405) he said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, Did I not say H559 (QalPerf) unto you, Go H3212 (QalImpf) not?

και ανεστρεψαν προς αυτον και αυτος εκαθητο εν ιεριχω και ειπεν ελισαιε ουκ ειπον προς υμας μη πορευθητε

But the Chaldean army pursued the king, and overtook him in the plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him.

και εδιωξεν η δυναμις των χαλδαιων οπισω του βασιλεως και κατελαβον αυτον εν αραβωθ ιεριχω και πασα η δυναμις αυτου διεσπαρη επανωθεν αυτου

and beyond the Jordan at Jericho, on the east side of the Jordan, were given them out of the tribe of Reuben: Bezer in the wilderness with its pasture lands, Jahzah with its pasture lands,

Then some people went and told David how the men were treated. He sent to meet them; for the men were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”

και ηλθον απαγγειλαι τω δαυιδ περι των ανδρων και απεστειλεν εις απαντησιν αυτοις οτι ησαν ητιμωμενοι σφοδρα και ειπεν ο βασιλευς καθισατε εν ιεριχω εως του ανατειλαι τους πωγωνας υμων και ανακαμψατε

The men who have been mentioned by name rose up and took the captives, and with the plunder clothed all who were naked among them, dressed them, gave them sandals, gave them something to eat and to drink, anointed them, carried all the feeble of them on donkeys, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.

και ανεστησαν ανδρες οι επεκληθησαν εν ονοματι και αντελαβοντο της αιχμαλωσιας και παντας τους γυμνους περιεβαλον απο των σκυλων και ενεδυσαν αυτους και υπεδησαν αυτους και εδωκαν φαγειν και αλειψασθαι και αντελαβοντο εν υποζυγιοις παντος ασθενουντος και κατεστησαν αυτους εις ιεριχω πολιν φοινικων προς τους αδελφους αυτων και επεστρεψαν εις σαμαρειαν
