και ουκ ησμενισαν οι υιοι ιεχονιου εν τοις ανδρασιν βαιθσαμυς οτι ειδαν κιβωτον κυριου και επαταξεν εν αυτοις εβδομηκοντα ανδρας και πεντηκοντα χιλιαδας ανδρων και επενθησεν ο λαος οτι επαταξεν κυριος εν τω λαω πληγην μεγαλην σφοδρα

Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me as the king over them.

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Hearken H8085 (QalImpv) unto the voice H6963 of the people H5971 in all that they say H559 (QalImpf) unto thee: for they have not rejected H3988 (QalPerf) thee, but they have rejected H3988 (QalPerf) me, that I should not reign H4427 (QalInf) over them.

και ειπεν κυριος προς σαμουηλ ακουε της φωνης του λαου καθα αν λαλησωσιν σοι οτι ου σε εξουθενηκασιν αλλ η εμε εξουδενωκασιν του μη βασιλευειν επ αυτων

Samuel told all Yahweh’s words to the people who asked him for a king.

And Samuel H8050 told H559 (QalImpf) all the words H1697 of the Lord H3068 unto the people H5971 that asked H7592 (QalActPtc) of him a king. H4428

και ειπεν σαμουηλ παν το ρημα κυριου προς τον λαον τους αιτουντας παρ αυτου βασιλεα

But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,

Nevertheless the people H5971 refused H3985 (PielImpf) to obey H8085 (QalInf) the voice H6963 of Samuel; H8050 and they said, H559 (QalImpf) Nay; but we will have a king H4428 over us;

και ουκ ηβουλετο ο λαος ακουσαι του σαμουηλ και ειπαν αυτω ουχι αλλ η βασιλευς εσται εφ ημας

Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Yahweh.

And Samuel H8050 heard H8085 (QalImpf) all the words H1697 of the people, H5971 and he rehearsed H1696 (PielImpf) them in the ears H241 of the Lord. H3068

και ηκουσεν σαμουηλ παντας τους λογους του λαου και ελαλησεν αυτους εις τα ωτα κυριου

He had a son whose name was Saul, an impressive young man; and there was not among the children of Israel a more handsome person than he. From his shoulders and upward he was taller than any of the people.

And he had a son, H1121 whose name H8034 was Saul, H7586 a choice young man, H970 and a goodly: H2896 and there was not among the children H1121 of Israel H3478 a goodlier H2896 person H376 than he: from his shoulders H7926 and upward H4605 he was higher H1364 than any of the people. H5971

και τουτω υιος και ονομα αυτω σαουλ ευμεγεθης ανηρ αγαθος και ουκ ην εν υιοις ισραηλ αγαθος υπερ αυτον υπερ ωμιαν και επανω υψηλος υπερ πασαν την γην

They answered them and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place.

And they answered H6030 (QalImpf) them, and said, H559 (QalImpf) He is; H3426 behold, he is before H6440 you: make haste H4116 (PielImpv) now, for he came H935 (QalPerf) to day H3117 to the city; H5892 for there is a sacrifice^§ H2077 of the people H5971 to day H3117 in the high place: H1116

και απεκριθη τα κορασια αυτοις και λεγουσιν αυτοις εστιν ιδου κατα προσωπον υμων νυν δια την ημεραν ηκει εις την πολιν οτι θυσια σημερον τω λαω εν βαμα

As soon as you have come into the city, you will immediately find him before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he comes, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you will find him.”

ως αν εισελθητε την πολιν ουτως ευρησετε αυτον εν τη πολει πριν αναβηναι αυτον εις βαμα του φαγειν οτι ου μη φαγη ο λαος εως του εισελθειν αυτον οτι ουτος ευλογει την θυσιαν και μετα ταυτα εσθιουσιν οι ξενοι και νυν αναβητε οτι δια την ημεραν ευρησετε αυτον

“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He will save my people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.”

When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! He will have authority over my people.”

And when Samuel H8050 saw H7200 (QalPerf) Saul, H7586 the Lord H3068 said H6030 (QalPerf) unto him, Behold the man H376 whom I spake H559 (QalPerf) to thee of! this same shall reign H6113 (QalImpf) over^§ my people. H5971

The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because it has been kept for you for the appointed time, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

When all who knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said to one another, “What is this that has come to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”

και εγενηθησαν παντες οι ειδοτες αυτον εχθες και τριτην και ειδον και ιδου αυτος εν μεσω των προφητων και ειπεν ο λαος εκαστος προς τον πλησιον αυτου τι τουτο το γεγονος τω υιω κις η και σαουλ εν προφηταις

Samuel called the people together to Yahweh to Mizpah;

They ran and got him there. When he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom Yahweh has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?” All the people shouted and said, “Long live the king!”

Then Samuel told the people the regulations of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before Yahweh. Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people, then all the people lifted up their voice and wept.

Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, “What ails the people that they weep?” They told him the words of the men of Jabesh.

και ιδου σαουλ ηρχετο μετα το πρωι εξ αγρου και ειπεν σαουλ τι οτι κλαιει ο λαος και διηγουνται αυτω τα ρηματα των υιων ιαβις

He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces, then sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever doesn’t come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

και ελαβεν δυο βοας και εμελισεν αυτας και απεστειλεν εις παν οριον ισραηλ εν χειρι αγγελων λεγων ος ουκ εστιν εκπορευομενος οπισω σαουλ και οπισω σαμουηλ κατα ταδε ποιησουσιν τοις βουσιν αυτου και επηλθεν εκστασις κυριου επι τον λαον ισραηλ και εβοησαν ως ανηρ εις

On the next day, Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the middle of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
