Then Jeshua the son of Jozadak stood up with his brothers the priests and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and his relatives, and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.

And rise doth Jeshua son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and they build the altar of the God of Israel, to cause to ascend upon it burnt-offerings, as it is written in the law of Moses, the man of God.

According to the good hand of our God on us they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel, namely Sherebiah, with his sons and his brothers, eighteen;

Now while Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before God’s house, there was gathered together to him out of Israel a very great assembly of men and women and children; for the people wept very bitterly.

And at Ezra’s praying, and at his making confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there have been gathered unto him out of Israel an assembly very great-men and women and children-for the people have wept, multiplying weeping.

Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together to Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the wide place in front of God’s house, trembling because of this matter, and because of the great rain.

And gathered are all the men of Judah and Benjamin to Jerusalem by the third day, it is the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month, and all the people sit in the broad place of the house of God, trembling on account of the matter and of the showers.

The children of the captivity did so. Ezra the priest, with certain heads of fathers’ households, after their fathers’ houses, and all of them by their names, were set apart; and they sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

Hanani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men out of Judah; and I asked them about the Jews who had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

and come in doth Hanani, one of my brethren, he and men of Judah, and I ask them concerning the Jews, the escaped part that have been left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem;

Lord,^§ I beg you, let your ear be attentive now to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name; and please prosper your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” Now I was cup bearer to the king.

‘I beseech Thee, O Lord, let, I pray Thee, Thine ear be attentive unto the prayer of Thy servant, and unto the prayer of Thy servants, those delighting to fear Thy Name; and give prosperity, I pray Thee, to Thy servant to-day, and give him for mercies before this man;’ and I have been butler to the king.

I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. I didn’t tell anyone what my God put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There wasn’t any animal with me except the animal that I rode on.

and I rise by night, I and a few men with me, and have not declared to a man what my God is giving unto my heart to do for Jerusalem, and there is no beast with me except the beast on which I am riding.

Next to them, Melatiah the Gibeonite and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah, repaired the residence of the governor beyond the River.

And next unto them H3027 repaired H2388 (HiphPerf) Melatiah H4424 the Gibeonite, H1393 and Jadon H3036 the Meronothite, H4824 the men H582 of Gibeon, H1391 and of Mizpah, H4709 unto the throne H3678 of the governor H6346 on this side H5676 the river. H5104

And by their hand hath Melatiah the Gibeonite strengthened, and Jadon the Meronothite, men of Gibeon and of Mizpah, to the throne of the governor beyond the River.

After him, the priests, the men of the surrounding area made repairs.

And after him have the priests, men of the circuit, strengthened.

Above the horse gate, the priests made repairs, everyone across from his own house.

From above the horse-gate have the priests strengthened, each over-against his house.

When our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, all of us returned to the wall, everyone to his work.

And it came to pass, when our enemies H341 (QalActPtc) heard H8085 (QalPerf) that it was known H3045 (NiphPerf) unto us, and God H430 had brought H6565 their counsel H6098 to nought, H6565 (HiphImpf) that we returned H7725 (QalImpf) all of us to the wall, H2346 every one H376 unto his work. H4399

And it cometh to pass, when our enemies have heard that it hath been known to us, and God doth frustrate their counsel, and we turn back, all of us, unto the wall, each unto his work;

Among the builders, everyone wore his sword at his side, and so built. He who sounded the trumpet was by me.

And the builders are each with his sword, girded on his loins, and building, and he who is blowing with a trumpet is beside me.

I said to the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and widely spread out, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another.

And I say unto the freemen, and unto the prefects, and unto the rest of the people, ‘The work is abundant, and large, and we are separated on the wall, far off one from another;

Likewise at the same time I said to the people, “Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day.”

So neither I, nor my brothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me took off our clothes. Everyone took his weapon to the water.

and there are none-I and my brethren and my servants, the men of the guard who are after me-there are none of us putting off our garments, each hath his vessel of water.

Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them, “You exact usury, everyone of his brother.” I held a great assembly against them.

and my heart reigneth over me, and I strive with the freemen, and with the prefects, and say to them, ‘Usury one upon another ye are exacting;’ and I set against them a great assembly,

Also I shook out my lap, and said, “So may God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that doesn’t perform this promise; even may he be shaken out and emptied like this.” All the assembly said, “Amen,” and praised Yahweh. The people did according to this promise.

also, my lap I have shaken, and I say, ‘Thus doth God shake out every man, who doth not perform this thing, from his house, and from his labour; yea, thus is he shaken out and empty;’ and all the assembly say, ‘Amen,’ and praise Jehovah; and the people do according to this thing.

Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, one hundred fifty men, in addition to those who came to us from among the nations that were around us.

Moreover [there were] at my table H7979 an hundred H3967 and fifty H2572 H376 of the Jews H3064 and rulers, H5461 beside those that came H935 (QalActPtc) unto us from among the heathen H1471 that [are] about us. H5439

and of the Jews, and of the prefects, a hundred and fifty men, and those coming in unto us of the nations that are round about us, are at my table;

I said, “Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”

And I said, H559 (QalImpf) Should such H3644 a man H376 as I flee? H1272 (QalImpf) and who [is there], that, [being] as I [am], would go H935 (QalImpf) into the temple H1964 to save his life? H2425 (QalPerf) I will not go in. H935 (QalImpf)

And I say, ‘A man such as I-doth he flee? and who as I, that doth go in unto the temple, and live?-I do not go in.’

I put my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the governor of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem; for he was a faithful man and feared God above many.

That I gave my brother H251 Hanani, H2607 and Hananiah H2608 the ruler H8269 of the palace, H1002 charge H6680 (PielImpf) over Jerusalem: H3389 for he [was] a faithful H571 man, H376 and feared H3372 (QalPerf) God H430 above many. H7227

and I charge Hanani my brother, and Hananiah head of the palace, concerning Jerusalem-for he is as a man of truth, and fearing God above many-

I said to them, “Don’t let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut the doors, and you bar them; and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyone in his watch, with everyone near his house.”

and I say to them, ‘Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened till the heat of the sun, and while they are standing by let them shut the doors, and fasten, and appoint guards of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each in his guard, and each over-against his house.’

These are the children of the province who went up out of the captivity of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and who returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, everyone to his city,

These are sons of the province, those coming up of the captives of the removal that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed-and they turn back to Jerusalem and to Judah, each to his city-

who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:

All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the wide place that was in front of the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.

And all the people are gathered as one man unto the broad place that is before the water-gate, and they say to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, that Jehovah commanded Israel.

Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.

And Ezra H5830 the priest H3548 brought H935 (HiphImpf) the law H8451 before H6440 the congregation H6951 both of men H376 and women, H802 and all that could hear H8085 (QalInf) with understanding, H995 (HiphPtc) upon the first H259 day H3117 of the seventh H7637 month. H2320

And Ezra the priest bringeth the law before the assembly, both of men and women, and every one intelligent to hear, on the first day of the seventh month,

He read from it before the wide place that was in front of the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand. The ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.

And he read H7121 (QalImpf) therein before H6440 the street H7339 that [was] before H6440 the water H4325 gate H8179 from the morning H216 until midday, H4276 H3117 before the men H582 and the women, H802 and those that could understand; H995 (HiphPtc) and the ears H241 of all the people H5971 [were attentive] unto the book H5612 of the law. and he readeth in it before the broad place that is before the water-gate, from the light till the middle of the day, over-against the men, and the women, and those intelligent, and the ears of all the people are unto the book of the law.

So the people went out and brought them, and made themselves temporary shelters,^§ everyone on the roof of his house, in their courts, in the courts of God’s house, in the wide place of the water gate, and in the wide place of Ephraim’s gate.

And the people go out, and bring in, and make for themselves booths, each on his roof, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the water-gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.

The people blessed all the men who willingly offered themselves to dwell in Jerusalem.

And the people H5971 blessed H1288 (PielImpf) all the men, H582 that willingly offered H5068 (HithPtc) themselves to dwell H3427 (QalInf) at Jerusalem. H3389

and the people give a blessing to all the men who are offering themselves willingly to dwell in Jerusalem.

Now these are the chiefs of the province who lived in Jerusalem; but in the cities of Judah, everyone lived in his possession in their cities—Israel, the priests, the Levites, the temple servants, and the children of Solomon’s servants.

Now these [are] the chief H7218 of the province H4082 that dwelt H3427 (QalPerf) in Jerusalem: H3389 but in the cities H5892 of Judah H3063 dwelt H3427 (QalPerf) every one H376 in his possession H272 in their cities, H5892 [to wit], Israel, H3478 the priests, H3548 and the Levites, H3881 and the Nethinims, H5411 and the children H1121 of Solomon’s H8010 servants. And these are heads of the province who have dwelt in Jerusalem, and in cities of Judah, they have dwelt each in his possession in their cities; Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the Nethinim, and the sons of the servants of Solomon.

All the sons of Perez who lived in Jerusalem were four hundred sixty-eight valiant men.

all the sons of Perez who are dwelling in Jerusalem are four hundred sixty and eight, men of valour.

The residue of Israel, of the priests, and the Levites were in all the cities of Judah, everyone in his inheritance.

And the rest of Israel, of the priests, of the Levites, are in all cities of Judah, each in his inheritance;

The chiefs of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brothers close to them, to praise and give thanks according to the commandment of David the man of God, section next to section.
