‘Let, we pray thee, our heads of all the assembly stand, and all who are in our cities, who have settled strange wives, do come in at the times appointed, and with them the elders of city and city, and its judges, till the turning back of the fury of the wrath of our God from us, for this thing.’

Hanani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men out of Judah; and I asked them about the Jews who had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

and come in doth Hanani, one of my brethren, he and men of Judah, and I ask them concerning the Jews, the escaped part that have been left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem;

but if you return to me, and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts were in the uttermost part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and will bring them to the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there.’

But [if] ye turn H7725 (QalPerf) unto me, and keep H8104 (QalPerf) my commandments, H4687 and do H6213 (QalPerf) them; though there were of you cast out H5080 (NiphPtc) unto the uttermost part H7097 of the heaven, H8064 [yet] will I gather H6908 (PielImpf) them from thence, and will bring H935 (HiphPerf) them unto the place H4725 that I have chosen H977 (QalPerf) to set H7931 (PielInf) my name H8034 there.

and ye have turned back unto Me, and kept My commands, and done them-if your outcast is in the end of the heavens, thence I gather them, and have brought them in unto the place that I have chosen to cause My name to tabernacle there.

Moreover I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;

And I say to the king, ‘If to the king it be good, letters let be given to me for the governors beyond the River, that they let me pass over till that I come in unto Judah:

and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I will occupy.” The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.

And a letter H107 unto Asaph H623 the keeper H8104 (QalActPtc) of the king’s H4428 forest, H6508 that he may give H5414 (QalImpf) me timber H6086 to make beams H7136 (PielInf) for the gates H8179 of the palace H1002 which [appertained] to the house, H1004 and for the wall H2346 of the city, H5892 and for the house H1004 that I shall enter into. H935 (QalImpf) And the king H4428 granted H5414 (QalImpf) me, according to the good H2896 hand H3027 of my God H430 upon me.

and a letter unto Asaph, keeper of the paradise that the king hath, that he give to me trees for beams for the gates of the palace that the house hath, and for the wall of the city, and for the house into which I enter;’ and the king giveth to me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.

When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, because a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

and Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and it is evil to them-a great evil-that a man hath come in to seek good for the sons of Israel.

So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

And I come in unto Jerusalem, and I am there three days,

Then I went up in the night by the brook and inspected the wall; and I turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned.

and I am going up through the brook by night, and am measuring about the wall, and turn back, and come in through the gate of the valley, and turn back.

Next to them, the Tekoites made repairs; but their nobles didn’t put their necks to the Lord’s work.

And next unto them H3027 the Tekoites H8621 repaired; H2388 (HiphPerf) but their nobles H117 put H935 (HiphPerf) not their necks H6677 to the work H5656 of their Lord. H113

and by his hand have the Tekoites strengthened, and their honourable ones have not brought in their neck to the service of their Lord.

and they all conspired together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion among us.

And conspired H7194 (QalImpf) all of them together H3162 to come H935 (QalInf) [and] to fight H3898 (NiphInf) against Jerusalem, H3389 and to hinder H6213 (QalInf) H8442 it.

and they conspire, all of them together, to come in to fight against Jerusalem, and to do to it injury.

Our adversaries said, “They will not know or see, until we come in among them and kill them, and cause the work to cease.”

And our adversaries H6862 said, H559 (QalImpf) They shall not know, H3045 (QalImpf) neither see, H7200 (QalImpf) till we come H935 (QalImpf) in the midst H8432 among H8432 them, and slay H2026 (QalPerf) them, and cause the work H4399 to cease. H7673 (HiphPerf)

And our adversaries say, ‘They do not know, nor see, till that we come in to their midst, and have slain them, and caused the work to cease.’

When the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times from all places, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”

And it cometh to pass, when the Jews have come who are dwelling near them, that they say to us ten times from all the places whither ye return-they are against us.

Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, one hundred fifty men, in addition to those who came to us from among the nations that were around us.

I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let’s shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you. Yes, in the night they will come to kill you.”

And I have entered the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabeel-and he is restrained-and he saith, ‘Let us meet at the house of God, at the inside of the temple, and we shut the doors of the temple, for they are coming in to slay thee-yea, by night they are coming in to slay thee.’

I said, “Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”

And I said, H559 (QalImpf) Should such H3644 a man H376 as I flee? H1272 (QalImpf) and who [is there], that, [being] as I [am], would go H935 (QalImpf) into the temple H1964 to save his life? H2425 (QalPerf) I will not go in. H935 (QalImpf)

And I say, ‘A man such as I-doth he flee? and who as I, that doth go in unto the temple, and live?-I do not go in.’

Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them.

Moreover in those days H3117 the nobles H2715 of Judah H3063 sent H1980 (QalActPtc) many H7235 (HiphPtc) letters H107 unto Tobiah, H2900 and [the letters] of Tobiah H2900 came H935 (QalActPtc) unto them.

Also, in those days the freemen of Judah are multiplying their letters going unto Tobiah, and those of Tobiah are coming in unto them;

who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:

All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the wide place that was in front of the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.

And all the people are gathered as one man unto the broad place that is before the water-gate, and they say to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, that Jehovah commanded Israel.

Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.

and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and get olive branches, branches of wild olive, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make temporary shelters,^§ as it is written.”

So the people went out and brought them, and made themselves temporary shelters,^§ everyone on the roof of his house, in their courts, in the courts of God’s house, in the wide place of the water gate, and in the wide place of Ephraim’s gate.

and bread from the heavens Thou hast given to them for their hunger, and water from a rock hast brought out to them for their thirst, and dost say to them to go in to possess the land that Thou hast lifted up Thy hand to give to them.

You also multiplied their children as the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land concerning which you said to their fathers that they should go in to possess it.

However you are just in all that has come on us; for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly.

and Thou art righteous concerning all that hath come upon us, for truth Thou hast done, and we have done wickedly;

joined with their brothers, their nobles, and entered into a curse and into an oath, to walk in God’s law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of Yahweh our Lord, and his ordinances and his statutes;

are laying hold on their brethren, their honourable ones, and coming in to an execration, and in to an oath, to walk in the law of God, that was given by the hand of Moses, servant of God, and to observe and to do all the commands of Jehovah our Lord, and His judgments, and His statutes;

and if the peoples of the land bring wares or any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy from them on the Sabbath, or on a holy day; and that we would forego the seventh year crops and the exaction of every debt.

And [if] the people H5971 of the land H776 bring H935 (HiphPtc) ware H4728 or any victuals H7668 on the sabbath H7676 day H3117 to sell, H4376 (QalInf) [that] we would not buy H3947 (QalImpf) it of them on the sabbath, H7676 or on the holy H6944 day: H3117 and [that] we would leave H5203 (QalImpf) the seventh H7637 year, H8141 and the exaction H4853 of every debt. and the peoples of the land who are bringing in the wares and any corn on the sabbath-day to sell, we receive not of them on the sabbath, and on a holy day, and we leave the seventh year, and usury on every hand.

We, the priests, the Levites, and the people, cast lots for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, according to our fathers’ houses, at times appointed year by year, to burn on Yahweh our God’s altar, as it is written in the law;

And the lots we have caused to fall for the offering of wood, among the priests, the Levites, and the people, to bring in to the house of our God, by the house of our fathers, at times appointed, year by year, to burn on the altar of Jehovah our God, as it is written in the law,

and to bring the first fruits of our ground and the first fruits of all fruit of all kinds of trees, year by year, to Yahweh’s house;

And to bring H935 (HiphInf) the firstfruits H1061 of our ground, H127 and the firstfruits H1061 of all fruit H6529 of all trees, H6086 year H8141 by year, H8141 unto the house H1004 of the Lord: H3068

and to bring in the first fruits of our ground, and the first fruits of all fruit of every tree, year by year, to the house of Jehovah,

also the firstborn of our sons and of our livestock, as it is written in the law, and the firstborn of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God;

Also the firstborn H1060 of our sons, H1121 and of our cattle, H929 as [it is] written H3789 (QalPasPtc) in the law, H8451 and the firstlings H1062 of our herds H1241 and of our flocks, H6629 to bring H935 (HiphInf) to the house H1004 of our God, H430 unto the priests H3548 that minister H8334 (PielPtc) in the house H1004 of our God: H430

and the firstlings of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and our flocks, to bring in to the house of our God, to the priests who are ministering in the house of our God.

and that we should bring the first fruits of our dough, our wave offerings, the fruit of all kinds of trees, and the new wine and the oil, to the priests, to the rooms of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground to the Levites; for they, the Levites, take the tithes in all our farming villages.

And [that] we should bring H935 (HiphImpf) the firstfruits H7225 of our dough, H6182 and our offerings, H8641 and the fruit H6529 of all manner of trees, H6086 of wine H8492 and of oil, H3323 unto the priests, H3548 to the chambers H3957 of the house H1004 of our God; H430 and the tithes H4643 of our ground H127 unto the Levites, H3881 that the same Levites H3881 might have the tithes H6237 (PielPtc) in all the cities H5892 of our tillage. And the beginning of our dough, and our heave-offerings, and the fruit of every tree, of new wine, and of oil, we bring in to the priests, unto the chambers of the house of our God, and the tithe of our ground to the Levites; and they-the Levites-have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage;

For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the wave offering of the grain, of the new wine, and of the oil, to the rooms where the vessels of the sanctuary are, and the priests who minister, with the gatekeepers and the singers. We will not forsake the house of our God.

For the children H1121 of Israel H3478 and the children H1121 of Levi H3878 shall bring H935 (HiphImpf) the offering H8641 of the corn, H1715 of the new wine, H8492 and the oil, H3323 unto the chambers, H3957 where [are] the vessels H3627 of the sanctuary, H4720 and the priests H3548 that minister, H8334 (PielPtc) and the porters, H7778 and the singers: H7891 (PolePtc) and we will not forsake H5800 (QalImpf) the house H1004 of our God. for unto the chambers do they bring in-the sons of Israel and the sons of Levi-the heave-offering of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, and there are vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests, those ministering, and the gatekeepers, and the singers, and we do not forsake the house of our God.

The princes of the people lived in Jerusalem. The rest of the people also cast lots to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem, the holy city, and nine parts in the other cities.

And the heads of the people dwell in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people have caused to fall lots to bring in one out of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts in the cities,

At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem to keep the dedication with gladness, both with giving thanks and with singing, with cymbals, stringed instruments, and with harps.

On that day they read in the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and it was found written in it that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,

On that day there was read in the book of Moses, in the ears of the people, and it hath been found written in it that an Ammonite and Moabite doth not come into the assembly of God-unto the age,

But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king; and after some days I asked leave of the king,

And during all this I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty and second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon did I come unto the king, and at the end of days I have asked of the king,

and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of God’s house.

And I came H935 (QalImpf) to Jerusalem, H3389 and understood H995 (QalImpf) of the evil H7451 that Eliashib H475 did H6213 (QalPerf) for Tobiah, H2900 in preparing H6213 (QalInf) him a chamber H5393 in the courts H2691 of the house H1004 of God. H430

and I come in to Jerusalem, and understand concerning the evil that Eliashib hath done for Tobiah, to make to him a chamber in the courts of the house of God,

Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the treasuries.

Then brought H935 (HiphPerf) all Judah H3063 the tithe H4643 of the corn H1715 and the new wine H8492 and the oil H3323 unto the treasuries. H214

and all Judah have brought in the tithe of the corn, and of the new wine, and of the oil, to the treasuries.

In those days I saw some men treading wine presses on the Sabbath in Judah, bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day; and I testified against them in the day in which they sold food.

In those days I have seen in Judah those treading wine-vats on sabbath, and bringing in the sheaves, and lading on the asses, and also, wine, grapes, and figs, and every burden, yea, they are bringing in to Jerusalem on the sabbath-day, and I testify in the day of their selling provision.

Some men of Tyre also lived there, who brought in fish and all kinds of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

There dwelt H3427 (QalPerf) men of Tyre H6876 also therein, which brought H935 (HiphPtc) fish, H1709 (Qere) H1709 and all manner of ware, H4377 and sold H4376 (QalActPtc) on the sabbath H7676 unto the children H1121 of Judah, H3063 and in Jerusalem. H3389

And the Tyrians have dwelt in it, bringing in fish, and every ware, and selling on sabbath to the sons of Judah and in Jerusalem.

Didn’t your fathers do this, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

Did H6213 (QalPerf) not your fathers H1 thus, and did H935 not our God H430 bring H935 (HiphImpf) all this evil H7451 upon us, and upon this city? H5892 yet ye bring H935 (HiphImpf) more H3254 (HiphPtc) wrath H2740 upon Israel H3478 by profaning H2490 (PielInf) the sabbath. H7676

Thus did not your fathers do? and our God bringeth in on us all this evil, and on this city, and ye are adding fierceness on Israel, to pollute the sabbath.’

It came to pass that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, so that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day.

And it came to pass, that when the gates H8179 of Jerusalem H3389 began to be dark H6751 (QalPerf) before H6440 the sabbath, H7676 I commanded H559 (QalImpf) that the gates H1817 should be shut, H5462 (NiphImpf) and charged H559 (QalImpf) that they should not be opened H6605 (QalImpf) till after H310 the sabbath: H7676 and [some] of my servants H5288 set H5975 (HiphPerf) I at the gates, H8179 [that] there should no burden H4853 be brought in H935 (QalImpf) on the sabbath H7676 day. And it cometh to pass, when the gates of Jerusalem have been dark before the sabbath, that I speak, and the doors are shut, and I say, that they do not open them till after the sabbath; and of my servants I have stationed at the gates; there doth not come in a burden on the sabbath-day.

Then I testified against them, and said to them, “Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they didn’t come on the Sabbath.

and I testify against them, and say unto them, ‘Wherefore are ye lodging over-against the wall? if ye repeat it, a hand I put forth upon you;’ from that time they have not come in on the sabbath.

I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me for this also, my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness.

And I say to the Levites, that they be cleansed, and, coming in, keeping the gates, to sanctify the sabbath-day. Also, this, remember for me, O my God, and have pity on me, according to the abundance of Thy kindness.

to bring Vashti the queen before the king wearing the royal crown, to show the people and the princes her beauty; for she was beautiful.

to bring in Vashti the queen before the king, with a royal crown, to shew the peoples and the heads her beauty, for she is of good appearance,

But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by the eunuchs. Therefore the king was very angry, and his anger burned in him.

But the queen H4436 Vashti H2060 refused H3985 (PielImpf) to come H935 (QalInf) at the king’s H4428 commandment H1697 by H3027 [his] chamberlains: H5631 therefore was the king H4428 very H3966 wroth, H7107 (QalImpf) and his anger H2534 burned H1197 (QalPerf) in him.

and the queen Vashti refuseth to come in at the word of the king that is by the hand of the eunuchs, and the king is very wroth, and his fury hath burned in him.

For this deed of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to show contempt for their husbands when it is reported, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she didn’t come.’

for go forth doth the word of the queen unto all the women, to render their husbands contemptible in their eyes, in their saying, The king Ahasuerus said to bring in Vashti the queen before him, and she did not come;

“If it pleases the king, let a royal commandment go from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it cannot be altered, that Vashti may never again come before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate to another who is better than she.

‘If to the king it be good, there goeth forth a royal word from before him, and it is written with the laws of Persia and Media, and doth not pass away, that Vashti doth not come in before the king Ahasuerus, and her royalty doth the king give to her companion who is better than she;

Each young woman’s turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after her purification for twelve months (for so were the days of their purification accomplished, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet fragrances and with preparations for beautifying women).

And in the drawing nigh of the turn of each young woman to come in unto the king Ahasuerus, at the end of there being to her-according to the law of the women-twelve months, for so they fulfil the days of their purifications; six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with spices, and with the purifications of women,
