[1] Now concerning the things about which you wrote to me: it is good for a man not to touch a woman. [2] But, because of sexual immoralities, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. [3] Let the husband give his wife the affection owed her, and likewise also the wife her husband. [4] The wife doesn’t have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise also the husband doesn’t have authority over his own body, but the wife does. [5] Don’t deprive one another, unless it is by consent for a season, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer, and may be together again, that Satan doesn’t tempt you because of your lack of self-control. [6] But this I say by way of concession, not of commandment. [7] Yet I wish that all men were like me. However, each man has his own gift from God, one of this kind, and another of that kind. [8] But I say to the unmarried and to widows, it is good for them if they remain even as I am. [9] But if they don’t have self-control, let them marry. For it’s better to marry than to burn with passion. [10] But to the married I command—not I, but the Lord—that the wife not leave her husband [11] (but if she departs, let her remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband not leave his wife. [12] But to the rest I—not the Lord—say, if any brother has an unbelieving wife, and she is content to live with him, let him not leave her. [13] The woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he is content to live with her, let her not leave her husband. [14] For the unbelieving husband is sanctified in the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified in the husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy. [15] Yet if the unbeliever departs, let there be separation. The brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us in peace. [16] For how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife? [17] Only, as the Lord has distributed to each man, as God has called each, so let him walk. So I command in all the assemblies. [18] Was anyone called having been circumcised? Let him not become uncircumcised. Has anyone been called in uncircumcision? Let him not be circumcised. [19] Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is keeping God’s commandments. [20] Let each man stay in that calling in which he was called. [21] Were you called being a bondservant? Don’t let that bother you, but if you get an opportunity to become free, use it. [22] For he who was called in the Lord being a bondservant is the Lord’s free man. Likewise he who was called being free is Christ’s bondservant. [23] You were bought with a price. Don’t become bondservants of men. [24] Brothers, let each man, in whatever condition he was called, stay in that condition with God. [25] Now concerning virgins, I have no commandment from the Lord, but I give my judgment as one who has obtained mercy from the Lord to be trustworthy. [26] Therefore I think that because of the distress that is on us, it’s good for a man to remain as he is. [27] Are you bound to a wife? Don’t seek to be freed. Are you free from a wife? Don’t seek a wife. [28] But if you marry, you have not sinned. If a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Yet such will have oppression in the flesh, and I want to spare you. [29] But I say this, brothers: the time is short. From now on, both those who have wives may be as though they had none; [30] and those who weep, as though they didn’t weep; and those who rejoice, as though they didn’t rejoice; and those who buy, as though they didn’t possess; [31] and those who use the world, as not using it to the fullest. For the mode of this world passes away. [32] But I desire to have you to be free from cares. He who is unmarried is concerned for the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord; [33] but he who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife. [34] There is also a difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But she who is married cares about the things of the world—how she may please her husband. [35] This I say for your own benefit, not that I may ensnare you, but for that which is appropriate, and that you may attend to the Lord without distraction. [36] But if any man thinks that he is behaving inappropriately toward his virgin, if she is past the flower of her age, and if need so requires, let him do what he desires. He doesn’t sin. Let them marry. [37] But he who stands steadfast in his heart, having no urgency, but has power over his own will, and has determined in his own heart to keep his own virgin, does well. [38] So then both he who gives his own virgin in marriage does well, and he who doesn’t give her in marriage does better. [39] A wife is bound by law for as long as her husband lives; but if the husband is dead, she is free to be married to whomever she desires, only in the Lord. [40] But she is happier if she stays as she is, in my judgment, and I think that I also have God’s Spirit.

[6] ButG1161 I speakG3004(PresActInd) thisG5124 byG2596 permission,G4774 [and] notG3756 ofG2596 commandment.G2003 [7] ForG1063 I wouldG2309(PresActInd) that allG3956 menG444 wereG1511(PresInf) evenG2532 asG5613 I myself.G1683 ButG235 every manG1538 hathG2192(PresActInd) his properG2398 giftG5486 ofG1537 God,G2316 oneG3739 after this manner,G3779 andG1161 anotherG3739 after that.G3779 [8] I sayG3004(PresActInd) thereforeG1161 to the unmarriedG22 andG2532 widows,G5503 It isG2076(PresInd) goodG2570 for themG846 ifG1437 they abideG3306(AorActSubj) evenG2504 asG5613 I.G2504 [9] ButG1161 [10] AndG1161 unto the marriedG1060(PerfActPtc) I command,G3853(PresActInd) [yet] notG3756 I,G1473 butG235 the Lord,G2962 LetG5563 notG3361 the wifeG1135 departG5563(AorPasInf) fromG575 [her] notG3361 the husbandG435 put awayG863(PresActInf) [his] wife.G1135 [12] ButG1161 to the restG3062 speakG3004(PresActInd) I,G1473 notG3756 the Lord:G2962 If anyG1536 brotherG80 hathG2192(PresActInd) a wifeG1135 that believeth not,G571 andG2532 sheG846 be pleasedG4909(PresActInd) to dwellG3611(PresActInf) withG3326 him,G846 let himG863 notG3361 putG863 herG846 away.G863(PresActImpr) [13] AndG2532 the womanG1135 whichG3748 hathG2192(PresActInd) an husbandG435 that believeth not,G571 andG2532 if heG846 be pleasedG4909(PresActInd) to dwellG3611(PresActInf) withG3326 her,G846 let herG863 notG3361 leaveG863(PresActImpr) him.G846 [14] ForG1063 the unbelievingG571 husbandG435 is sanctifiedG37(PerfPasInd) byG1722 the wife,G1135 andG2532 the unbelievingG571 wifeG1135 is sanctifiedG37(PerfPasInd) byG1722 the husband:G435 elseG686 wereG2076(PresInd) yourG5216 childrenG5043 unclean;G169 butG1161 nowG3568 are theyG2076(PresInd) holy.G40 [15] ButG1161 ifG1487 the unbelievingG571 depart,G5563(PresMidInd) let him depart.G5563(PresPasImpr) A brotherG80 orG2228 a sisterG79 isG1402 notG3756 under bondageG1402(PerfPasInd) inG1722 suchG5108 [cases]: butG1161 GodG2316 hath calledG2564(PerfActInd) usG2248 toG1722 peace.G1515 [16] ForG1063 whatG5101 knowest thou,G1492(PerfActInd) O wife,G1135 whetherG1487 thou shalt saveG4982(FutActInd) [thy] husband?G435 orG2228 howG5101 knowest thou,G1492(PerfActInd) O man,G435 whetherG1487 thou shalt saveG4982(FutActInd) [thy] wife?G1135 [17] ButG1508 asG5613 GodG2316 hath distributedG3307(AorActInd) to every man,G1538 asG5613 the LordG2962 hath calledG2564(PerfActInd) every one,G1538 soG3779 let him walk.G4043(PresActImpr) AndG2532 soG3779 ordain IG1299(PresMidInd) inG1722 allG3956 churches.G1577 [18] IsG2564 any manG5100 calledG2564(AorPasInd) being circumcised?G4059(PerfPasPtc) let himG1986 notG3361 become uncircumcised.G1986(PresMidPasDepImpr) IsG2564 anyG5100 calledG2564(AorPasInd) inG1722 uncircumcision?G203 let himG4059 notG3361 be circumcised.G4059(PresPasImpr) [19] CircumcisionG4061 isG2076(PresInd) nothing,G3762 andG2532 uncircumcisionG203 isG2076(PresInd) nothing,G3762 butG235 the keepingG5084 of the commandmentsG1785 of God.G2316 [20] LetG3306 every manG1538 abideG3306(PresActImpr) inG1722 the sameG5026 callingG2821 whereinG1722 he was called.G2564(AorPasInd) [21] Art thou calledG2564(AorPasInd) [being] a servant?G1401 careG3199 notG3361 for it:G3199(PresActImpr) butG235 ifG1499 thou mayestG1410(PresMidPasDepInd) be madeG1096(Aor2MidDepInf) free,G1658 useG5530(AorMidDepImpr) [it] rather.G3123 [22] ForG1063 he that is calledG2564(AorPasPtc) inG1722 the Lord,G2962 [being] a servant,G1401 isG2076(PresInd) the Lord’sG2962 freeman:G558 likewiseG3668 alsoG2532 he that is called,G2564(AorPasPtc) [being] free,G1658 isG2076(PresInd) Christ’sG5547 servant.G1401 [23] Ye are boughtG59(AorPasInd) with a price;G5092 beG1096 notG3361 yeG1096(PresMidPasDepImpr) the servantsG1401 of men.G444 [24] Brethren,G80 letG3306 every man,G1538 whereinG1722 he is called,G2564(AorPasInd) thereinG1722 abideG3306(PresActImpr) withG3844 God.G2316 [25] NowG1161 concerningG4012 virginsG3933 I haveG2192(PresActInd) noG3756 commandmentG2003 of the Lord:G2962 yetG1161 I giveG1325(PresActInd) my judgment,G1106 asG5613 one that hath obtained mercyG1653(PerfPasPtc) ofG5259 the LordG2962 to beG1511(PresInf) faithful.G4103 [26] I supposeG3543(PresActInd) thereforeG3767 that thisG5124 isG5225(PresActInf) goodG2570 forG1223 the presentG1764(PerfActPtc) distress,G318 [I say], thatG3754 [it is] goodG2570 for a manG444 soG3779 to be.G1511(PresInf) [27] Art thou boundG1210(PerfPasInd) unto a wife?G1135 seekG2212(PresActImpr) notG3361 to be loosed.G3080 Art thou loosedG3089(PerfPasInd) fromG575 a wife?G1135 seekG2212(PresActImpr) notG3361 a wife.G1135 [28] ButG1161 andG2532 ifG1437 thou marry,G1060(AorActSubj) thou hastG264 notG3756 sinned;G264(Aor2ActInd) andG2532 ifG1437 a virginG3933 marry,G1060(AorActSubj) she hathG264 notG3756 sinned.G264(Aor2ActInd) NeverthelessG1161 suchG5108 shall haveG2192(FutActInd) troubleG2347 in the flesh:G4561 butG1161 IG1473 spareG5339(PresMidPasDepInd) you.G5216 [29] ButG1161 thisG5124 I say,G5346(PresInd) brethren,G80 the timeG2540 [is] short:G4958(PerfPasPtc) it remaineth,G2076(PresInd) thatG2443 bothG2532 they that haveG2192(PresActPtc) wivesG1135 beG5600(PresSubj) as thoughG5613 they hadG2192(PresActPtc) none;G3361 [30] AndG2532 they that weep,G2799(PresActPtc) asG5613 though they weptG2799(PresActPtc) not;G3361 andG2532 they that rejoice,G5463(PresActPtc) asG5613 though they rejoicedG5463(PresActPtc) not;G3361 andG2532 they that buy,G59(PresActPtc) asG5613 though they possessedG2722(PresActPtc) not;G3361 [31] AndG2532 they that useG5530(PresMidPasDepPtc) thisG5127 world,G2889 asG5613 notG3361 abusingG2710(PresMidPasDepPtc) [it]: forG1063 the fashionG4976 of thisG5129 worldG2889 passeth away.G3855(PresActInd) [32] ButG1161 I would haveG1511(PresInf) youG5209 without carefulness.G275 He that is unmarriedG22 carethG3309(PresActInd) for the things that belong toG3588 the Lord,G2962 howG4459 he may pleaseG700(FutActInd) the Lord:G2962 [33] ButG1161 he that is marriedG1060(AorActPtc) carethG3309(PresActInd) for the things that areG3588 of the world,G2889 howG4459 he may pleaseG700(FutActInd) [his] wife.G1135 [34] There is difference [also] betweenG3307(PerfPasInd) a wifeG1135 andG2532 a virgin.G3933 The unmarried womanG22 careth forG3309(PresActInd) the thingsG3588 of the Lord,G2962 thatG2443 she may beG5600(PresSubj) holyG40 bothG2532 in bodyG4983 andG2532 in spirit:G4151 butG1161 she that is marriedG1060(AorActPtc) carethG3309(PresActInd) for the thingsG3588 of the world,G2889 howG4459 she may pleaseG700(FutActInd) [her] husband.G435 [35] AndG1161 thisG5124 I speakG3004(PresActInd) forG4314 yourG5216 ownG846 profit;G4851(PresActPtc) notG3756 thatG2443 I may castG1911(Aor2ActSubj) a snareG1029 upon you,G5213 butG235 for that whichG4314 is comely,G2158 andG2532 that ye may attend uponG2145 the LordG2962 without distraction.G563 [36] ButG1161 if any manG1536 thinkG3543(PresActInd) that he behaveth himself uncomelyG807(PresActInf) towardG1909 hisG846 virgin,G3933 ifG1437 she pass the flower of [her] age,G5230 andG2532 needG3784(PresActInd) soG3779 require,G1096(PresMidPasDepInf) let him doG4160(PresActImpr) whatG3739 he will,G2309(PresActInd) he sinnethG264(PresActInd) not:G3756 let them marry.G1060(PresActImpr) [37] NeverthelessG1161 heG3739 that standethG2476(ImpfActInd/PerfActInd) stedfastG1476 inG1722 his heart,G2588 havingG2192(PresActPtc) noG3361 necessity,G318 butG1161 hathG2192(PresActInd) powerG1849 overG4012 his ownG2398 will,G2307 andG2532 hathG2919 soG5124 decreedG2919(PerfActInd) inG1722 hisG846 heartG2588 that he will keepG5083(PresActInf) hisG1438 virgin,G3933 doethG4160(PresActInd) well.G2573 [38] SoG5620 thenG2532 he that giveth [her] in marriageG1547(PresActPtc) doethG4160(PresActInd) well;G2573 butG1161 he that giveth [her]G1547 notG3361 in marriageG1547(PresActPtc) doethG4160(PresActInd) better.G2908 [39] The wifeG1135 is boundG1210(PerfPasInd) by the lawG3551 as longG5550 asG3745 herG846 husbandG435 liveth;G2198(PresActInd) butG1161 ifG1437 herG846 husbandG435 be dead,G2837(AorPasSubj) she isG2076(PresInd) at libertyG1658 to be marriedG1060(AorPasInf) to whomG3739 she will;G2309(PresActInd) onlyG3440 inG1722 the Lord.G2962 [40] ButG1161 she isG2076(PresInd) happierG3107 ifG1437 sheG3306 soG3779 abide,G3306(AorActSubj) afterG2596 myG1699 judgment:G1106 andG1161 I thinkG1380(PresActInd) alsoG2504 that I haveG2192(PresActInf) the SpiritG4151 of God.G2316
