[1] Follow after love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. [2] For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God, for no one understands, but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries. [3] But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation. [4] He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly. [5] Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but even more that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up. [6] But now, brothers,§ if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching? [7] Even lifeless things that make a sound, whether pipe or harp, if they didn’t give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped? [8] For if the trumpet gave an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for war? [9] So also you, unless you uttered by the tongue words easy to understand, how would it be known what is spoken? For you would be speaking into the air. [10] There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without meaning. [11] If then I don’t know the meaning of the language, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me. [12] So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound to the building up of the assembly. [13] Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret. [14] For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. [15] What should I do? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. [16] Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say? [17] For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up. [18] I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all. [19] However, in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language. [20] Brothers, don’t be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature. [21] In the law it is written, “By men of strange languages and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people. They won’t even listen to me that way, says the Lord.”† [22] Therefore other languages are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe. [23] If therefore the whole assembly is assembled together and all speak with other languages, and unlearned or unbelieving people come in, won’t they say that you are crazy? [24] But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all. [25] And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed. [26] What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, or has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up. [27] If any man speaks in another language, let there be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret. [28] But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to God. [29] Let two or three of the prophets speak, and let the others discern. [30] But if a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first keep silent. [31] For you all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be exhorted. [32] The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets, [33] for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints. [34] Let the wives be quiet in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to be talking except in submission, as the law also says,† [35] if they desire to learn anything. “Let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a wife to be talking in the assembly.” [36] What!? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone? [37] If any man thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord. [38] But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. [39] Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking with other languages. [40] Let all things be done decently and in order.

andG2532 comfort.G3889 [4] He that speakethG2980(PresActPtc) in an [unknown] tongueG1100 edifiethG3618(PresActInd) himself;G1438 butG1161 he that prophesiethG4395(PresActPtc) edifiethG3618(PresActInd) the church.G1577 [5] I wouldG2309(PresActInd) that yeG5209 allG3956 spakeG2980(PresActInf) with tongues,G1100 butG1161 ratherG3123 thatG2443 ye prophesied:G4395(PresActSubj) forG1063 greaterG3187 [is] he that prophesiethG4395(PresActPtc) thanG2228 he that speakethG2980(PresActPtc) with tongues,G1100 exceptG1622 he interpret,G1329(PresActSubj) thatG2443 the churchG1577 may receiveG2983(Aor2ActSubj) edifying.G3619 [6] Now,G3570 brethren,G80 ifG1437 I comeG2064(Aor2ActSubj) untoG4314 youG5209 speakingG2980(PresActPtc) with tongues,G1100 whatG5101 shall I profitG5623(FutActInd) you,G5209 exceptG3362 I shall speakG2980(AorActSubj) to youG5213 eitherG2228 byG1722 revelation,G602 orG2228 byG1722 knowledge,G1108 orG2228 byG1722 prophesying,G4394 orG2228 byG1722 doctrine?G1322 [7] And evenG3676 things without lifeG895 givingG1325(PresActPtc) sound,G5456 whetherG1535 pipeG836 orG1535 harp,G2788 exceptG3362 they giveG1325(Aor2ActSubj) a distinctionG1293 in the sounds,G5353 howG4459 shall it be knownG1097(FutPasInd) what is pipedG832(PresPasPtc) orG2228 harped?G2789(PresPasPtc) [8] ForG1063 ifG1437 the trumpetG4536 giveG1325(Aor2ActSubj) an uncertainG82 sound,G5456 whoG5101 shall prepare himselfG3903(FutMidDepInd) toG1519 the battle?G4171 [9] SoG3779 likewiseG2532 ye,G5210 exceptG3362 ye utterG1325(Aor2ActSubj) byG1223 the tongueG1100 wordsG3056 easy to be understood,G2154 howG4459 shall it be knownG1097(FutPasInd) what is spoken?G2980(PresPasPtc) forG1063 ye shallG2071(FutInd) speakG2980(PresActPtc) intoG1519 the air.G109 [10] There are,G2076(PresInd) it may be,G5177(Aor2ActOpt) so manyG5118 kindsG1085 of voicesG5456 inG1722 the world,G2889 andG2532 none of themG3762 [is] without signification.G880 [11] ThereforeG3767 ifG3362 I knowG1492(PerfActSubj) notG3362 the meaningG1411 of the voice,G5456 I shall beG2071(FutInd) unto him that speakethG2980(PresActPtc) a barbarian,G915 andG2532 he that speakethG2980(PresActPtc) [shall be] a barbarianG915 untoG1722 me.G1698 [12] EvenG2532 soG3779 ye,G5210 forasmuch asG1893 ye areG2075(PresInd) zealousG2207 of spiritualG4151 [gifts], seekG2212(PresActImpr) thatG2443 ye may excelG4052(PresActSubj) toG4314 the edifyingG3619 of the church.G1577 [13] WhereforeG1355 let him that speakethG2980(PresActPtc) in an [unknown] tongueG1100 prayG4336(PresMidPasDepImpr) thatG2443 he may interpret.G1329(PresActSubj) [14] ForG1063 ifG1437 I prayG4336(PresMidPasDepSubj) in an [unknown] tongue,G1100 myG3450 spiritG4151 prayeth,G4336(PresMidPasDepInd) butG1161 myG3450 understandingG3563 isG2076(PresInd) unfruitful.G175 [15] WhatG5101 is itG2076(PresInd) then?G3767 I will prayG4336(FutMidDepInd) with the spirit,G4151 andG1161 I will prayG4336(FutMidDepInd) with the understandingG3563 also:G2532 I will singG5567(FutActInd) with the spirit,G4151 andG1161 I will singG5567(FutActInd) with the understandingG3563 also.G2532 [16] ElseG1893 whenG1437 thou shalt blessG2127(AorActSubj) with the spirit,G4151 howG4459 shall he that occupiethG378(PresActPtc) the roomG5117 of the unlearnedG2399 sayG2046(FutActInd) AmenG281 atG1909 thyG4674 giving of thanks,G2169 seeingG1894 he understandethG1492(PerfActInd) notG3756 whatG5101 thou sayest?G3004(PresActInd) [17] ForG1063 thouG4771 verilyG3303 givest thanksG2168(PresActInd) well,G2573 butG235 the otherG2087 isG3618 notG3756 edified.G3618(PresPasInd) [18] I thankG2168(PresActInd) myG3450 God,G2316 I speakG2980(PresActPtc) with tonguesG1100 more thanG3123 yeG5216 all:G3956 [19] YetG235 inG1722 the churchG1577 I had ratherG2309(PresActInd) speakG2980(AorActInf) fiveG4002 wordsG3056 withG1223 myG3450 understanding,G3563 thatG2443 [by my voice] I might teachG2727(AorActSubj) othersG243 also,G2532 thanG2228 ten thousandG3463 wordsG3056 inG1722 an [unknown] tongue.G1100 [20] Brethren,G80 beG1096(PresMidPasDepImpr) notG3361 childrenG3813 in understanding:G5424 howbeitG235 in maliceG2549 be ye children,G3515(PresActImpr) butG1161 in understandingG5424 beG1096(PresMidPasDepImpr) men.G5046 [21] InG1722 the lawG3551 it is written,G1125(PerfPasInd) WithG1722 [men of] other tonguesG2084 andG2532 otherG1722 lipsG5491 will I speakG2980(FutActInd) unto thisG5129 people;G2992 andG2532 yet for allG3779 that will theyG1522 notG3761 hearG1522(FutMidDepInd) me,G3450 saithG3004(PresActInd) the Lord.G2962 [22] WhereforeG5620 tonguesG1100 areG1526(PresInd) forG1519 a sign,G4592 notG3756 to them that believe,G4100(PresActPtc) butG235 to them that believe not:G571 butG1161 prophesyingG4394 [serveth] notG3756 for them that believe not,G571 butG235 for them which believe.G4100(PresActPtc) [23] IfG1437 thereforeG3767 the wholeG3650 churchG1577 be come togetherG4905(Aor2ActSubj) intoG1909 one place,G846 andG2532 allG3956 speakG2980(PresActSubj) with tongues,G1100 andG1161 there come inG1525(Aor2ActSubj) [those that are] unlearned,G2399 orG2228 unbelievers,G571 will theyG2046 notG3756 sayG2046(FutActInd) thatG3754 ye are mad?G3105(PresMidPasDepInd) [24] ButG1161 ifG1437 allG3956 prophesy,G4395(PresActSubj) andG1161 there come inG1525(Aor2ActSubj) oneG5100 that believeth not,G571 orG2228 [one] unlearned,G2399 he is convincedG1651(PresPasInd) ofG5259 all,G3956 he is judgedG350(PresPasInd) ofG5259 all:G3956 [25] AndG2532 thusG3779 areG1096 the secretsG2927 of hisG846 heartG2588 madeG1096(PresMidPasDepInd) manifest;G5318 andG2532 soG3779 falling downG4098(Aor2ActPtc) onG1909 [his] faceG4383 he will worshipG4352(FutActInd) God,G2316 and reportG518(PresActPtc) thatG3754 GodG2316 isG2076(PresInd) inG1722 youG5213 of a truth.G3689 [26] HowG5101 is itG2076(PresInd) then,G3767 brethren?G80 whenG3752 ye come together,G4905(PresMidPasDepSubj) every oneG1538 of youG5216 hathG2192(PresActInd) a psalm,G5568 hathG2192(PresActInd) a doctrine,G1322 hathG2192(PresActInd) a tongue,G1100 hathG2192(PresActInd) a revelation,G602 hathG2192(PresActInd) an interpretation.G2058 LetG1096 all thingsG3956 be doneG1096(Aor2MidDepImpr) untoG4314 edifying.G3619 [27] IfG1535 any manG5100 speakG2980(PresActInd) in an [unknown] tongue,G1100 [let it be] byG2596 two,G1417 orG2228 at the mostG4118 [by] three,G5140 andG2532 [that] byG303 course;G3313 andG2532 letG1329 oneG1520 interpret.G1329(PresActImpr) [28] ButG1161 ifG3362 there beG5600(PresSubj) noG3362 interpreter,G1328 let him keep silenceG4601(PresActImpr) inG1722 the church;G1577 andG1161 let him speakG2980(PresActImpr) to himself,G1438 andG2532 to God.G2316 [29] LetG2980 the prophetsG4396 speakG2980(PresActImpr) twoG1417 orG2228 three,G5140 andG2532 letG1252 the otherG243 judge.G1252(PresActImpr) [30] IfG1161 [any thing] be revealedG601(AorPasSubj) to anotherG243 that sitteth by,G2521(PresMidPasDepPtc) letG4601 the firstG4413 hold his peace.G4601(PresActImpr) [31] ForG1063 ye mayG1410(PresMidPasDepInd) allG3956 prophesyG4395(PresActInf) one by one,G2596 thatG2443 allG3956 may learn,G3129(PresActSubj) andG2532 allG3956 may be comforted.G3870(PresPasSubj) [32] AndG2532 the spiritsG4151 of the prophetsG4396 are subjectG5293(PresPasInd) to the prophets.G4396 [33] ForG1063 GodG2316 isG2076(PresInd) notG3756 [the author] of confusion,G181 butG235 of peace,G1515 asG5613 inG1722 allG3956 churchesG1577 of the saints.G40 [34] LetG4601 yourG5216 womenG1135 keep silenceG4601(PresActImpr) inG1722 the churches:G1577 forG1063 it isG2010 notG3756 permittedG2010(PerfPasInd) unto themG846 to speak;G2980(PresActInf) butG235 [they are commanded] to be under obedience,G5293(PresMidInf) asG2531 alsoG2532 saithG3004(PresActInd) the law.G3551 [35] AndG1161 ifG1487 they willG2309(PresActInd) learnG3129(Aor2ActInf) any thing,G5100 let them askG1905(PresActImpr) theirG2398 husbandsG435 atG1722 home:G3624 forG1063 it isG2076(PresInd) a shameG149 for womenG1135 to speakG2980(PresActInf) inG1722 the church.G1577 [36] What?G2228 cameG1831 the wordG3056 of GodG2316 outG1831(Aor2ActInd) fromG575 you?G5216 orG2228 came itG2658(AorActInd) untoG1519 youG5209 only?G3441 [37] If any manG1536 think himselfG1380(PresActInd) to beG1511(PresInf) a prophet,G4396 orG2228 spiritual,G4152 let him acknowledgeG1921(PresActImpr) thatG3754 the thingsG3739 that I writeG1125(PresActInd) unto youG5213 areG1526(PresInd) the commandmentsG1785 of the Lord.G2962 [38] ButG1161 if any manG1536 be ignorant,G50(PresActInd) let him be ignorant.G50(PresActImpr) [39] Wherefore,G5620 brethren,G80 covetG2206(PresActImpr) to prophesy,G4395(PresActInf) andG2532 forbidG2967(PresActImpr) notG3361 to speakG2980(PresActInf) with tongues.G1100 [40] LetG1096 all thingsG3956 be doneG1096(PresMidPasDepImpr) decentlyG2156 andG2532 inG2596 order.G5010
