[1] Cast your bread on the waters;
for you shall find it after many days.
[2] Give a portion to seven, yes, even to eight;
for you don’t know what evil will be on the earth.
[3] If the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves on the earth;
and if a tree falls toward the south, or toward the north,
in the place where the tree falls, there shall it be.
[4] He who observes the wind won’t sow;
and he who regards the clouds won’t reap.
[5] As you don’t know what is the way of the wind,
nor how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child;
even so you don’t know the work of God who does all.
[6] In the morning sow your seed,
and in the evening don’t withhold your hand;
for you don’t know which will prosper, whether this or that,
or whether they both will be equally good.
[7] Truly the light is sweet,
and it is a pleasant thing for the eyes to see the sun.
[8] Yes, if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all;
but let him remember the days of darkness, for they shall be many.
All that comes is vanity.
[9] Rejoice, young man, in your youth,
and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth,
and walk in the ways of your heart,
and in the sight of your eyes;
but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.
[10] Therefore remove sorrow from your heart,
and put away evil from your flesh;
for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.
King James Version
[1] Cast H7971 (PielImpv) thy bread H3899 upon H6440 the waters: H4325§ for thou shalt find H4672 (QalImpf) it after many H7230 days. H3117 [2] Give H5414 (QalImpv) a portion H2506 to seven, H7651 and also to eight; H8083 for thou knowest H3045 (QalImpf) not what evil H7451 shall be upon the earth. H776 [3] If the clouds H5645 be full H4390 (NiphImpf) of rain, H1653 they empty H7324 (HiphImpf) themselves upon the earth: H776 and if the tree H6086 fall H5307 (QalImpf) toward the south, H1864 or toward the north, H6828 in the place H4725 where the tree H6086 falleth, H5307 (QalImpf) there it shall be. H1933 (QalImpf) [4] He that observeth H8104 (QalActPtc) the wind H7307 shall not sow; H2232 (QalImpf) and he that regardeth H7200 (QalActPtc) the clouds H5645 shall not reap. H7114 (QalImpf) [5] As thou knowest H3045 (QalActPtc) not what is the way H1870 of the spirit, H7307 nor how the bones H6106 do grow in the womb H990 of her that is with child: H4392 even so thou knowest H3045 (QalImpf) not the works H4639 of God H430 who maketh H6213 (QalImpf) all. [6] In the morning H1242 sow H2232 (QalImpv) thy seed, H2233 and in the evening H6153 withhold H3240 (HiphImpf) not thine hand: H3027 for thou knowest H3045 (QalActPtc) not whether H335 shall prosper, H3787 (QalImpf)§ either this or that, or whether they both H8147 shall be alike H259 good. H2896 [7] Truly the light H216 is sweet, H4966 and a pleasant H2896 thing it is for the eyes H5869 to behold H7200 (QalInf) the sun: H8121 [8] but if a man H120 live H2421 (QalImpf) many H7235 (HiphInf) years, H8141 and rejoice H8055 (QalImpf) in them all; yet let him remember H2142 (QalImpf) the days H3117 of darkness; H2822 for they shall be many. H7235 (HiphInf) All that cometh H935 (QalPerf) is vanity. H1892 [9] Rejoice, H8055 (QalImpv) O young man, H970 in thy youth; H3208 and let thy heart H3820 cheer H2895 (HiphImpf) thee in the days H3117 of thy youth, H979 and walk H1980 (PielImpv) in the ways H1870 of thine heart, H3820 and in the sight H4758 of thine eyes: H5869 but know H3045 (QalImpv) thou, that for all these things God H430 will bring H935 (HiphImpf) thee into judgment. H4941 [10] Therefore remove H5493 (HiphImpv) sorrow H3708§ from thy heart, H3820 and put away H5674 (HiphImpv) evil H7451 from thy flesh: H1320 for childhood H3208 and youth H7839 are vanity. H1892
