[1] A revelation of Yahweh’s word concerning Israel: Yahweh, who stretches out the heavens and lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him says: [2] “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of reeling to all the surrounding peoples, and it will also be on Judah in the siege against Jerusalem. [3] It will happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the peoples. All who burden themselves with it will be severely wounded, and all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against it. [4] In that day,” says Yahweh, “I will strike every horse with terror and his rider with madness. I will open my eyes on the house of Judah, and will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. [5] The chieftains of Judah will say in their heart, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my strength in Yahweh of Armies their God.’ [6] In that day I will make the chieftains of Judah like a pan of fire among wood, and like a flaming torch among sheaves. They will devour all the surrounding peoples on the right hand and on the left; and Jerusalem will yet again dwell in their own place, even in Jerusalem. [7] Yahweh also will save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of David’s house and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem not be magnified above Judah. [8] In that day Yahweh will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem. He who is feeble among them at that day will be like David, and David’s house will be like God, like Yahweh’s angel before them. [9] It will happen in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. [10] I will pour on David’s house and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and of supplication. They will look to me§ whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for his only son, and will grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for his firstborn. [11] In that day there will be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddo. [12] The land will mourn, every family apart; the family of David’s house apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; [13] the family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of the Shimeites apart, and their wives apart; [14] all the families who remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.
Footnotes
- After “me”, the Hebrew has the two letters “Aleph Tav” (the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet), not as a word, but as a grammatical marker.

[1] The burdenH4853 of the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 for Israel,H3478 saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord,H3068 which stretchethH5186(QalActPtc) forth the heavens,H8064 and layeth the foundationH3245(QalPtc) of the earth,H776 and formethH3335(QalActPtc) the spiritH7307 of manH120 withinH7130 him. [2] Behold, I will makeH7760(QalActPtc) JerusalemH3389 a cupH5592 of tremblingH7478 unto all the peopleH5971 round about,H5439 when they shall be in the siegeH4692 both against JudahH3063 [and] against Jerusalem.H3389 [3] And in that dayH3117 will I makeH7760(QalImpf) JerusalemH3389 a burdensomeH4614 stoneH68 for all people:H5971 all that burdenH6006(QalActPtc) themselves with it shall be cut in pieces,H8295(QalInf) though all the peopleH1471 of the earthH776 be gathered togetherH622(NiphPerf) against it. [4] In that day,H3117 saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord,H3068 I will smiteH5221(HiphImpf) every horseH5483 with astonishment,H8541 and his riderH7392(QalActPtc) with madness:H7697 and I will openH6491(QalImpf) mine eyesH5869 upon the houseH1004 of Judah,H3063 and will smiteH5221(HiphImpf) every horseH5483 of the peopleH5971 with blindness.H5788 [5] And the governorsH441 of JudahH3063 shall sayH559(QalPerf) in their heart,H3820 The inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of JerusalemH3389 [shall be] my strengthH556 in the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 their God.H430 [6] In that dayH3117 will I makeH7760(QalImpf) the governorsH441 of JudahH3063 like an hearthH3595 of fireH784 among the wood,H6086 and like a torchH3940 of fireH784 in a sheaf;H5995 and they shall devourH398(QalPerf) all the peopleH5971 round about,H5439 on the right handH3225 and on the left:H8040 and JerusalemH3389 shall be inhabitedH3427(QalPerf) again in her own place, [even] in Jerusalem.H3389 [7] The LordH3068 also shall saveH3467(HiphPerf) the tentsH168 of JudahH3063 first,H7223 that the gloryH8597 of the houseH1004 of DavidH1732 and the gloryH8597 of the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of JerusalemH3389 do not magnifyH1431(QalImpf) [themselves] against Judah.H3063 [8] In that dayH3117 shall the LordH3068 defendH1598(HiphImpf) the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of Jerusalem;H3389 and he that is feebleH3782(NiphPtc) among them at that dayH3117 shall be as David;H1732 and the houseH1004 of DavidH1732 [shall be] as God,H430 as the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 beforeH6440 them. [9] And it shall come to pass in that day,H3117 [that] I will seekH1245(PielImpf) to destroyH8045(HiphInf) all the nationsH1471 that comeH935(QalActPtc) against Jerusalem.H3389 [10] And I will pourH8210(QalPerf) upon the houseH1004 of David,H1732 and upon the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of Jerusalem,H3389 the spiritH7307 of graceH2580 and of supplications:H8469 and they shall lookH5027(HiphPerf) upon me whom they have pierced,H1856(QalPerf) and they shall mournH4553 for him, as one mournethH5594(QalPerf) for [his] onlyH3173 [son], and shall be in bitternessH4843(HiphInf) for him, as one that is in bitternessH4843(HiphInf) for [his] firstborn.H1060 [11] In that dayH3117 shall there be a greatH1431(QalImpf) mourningH4553 in Jerusalem,H3389 as the mourningH4553 of HadadrimmonH1910 in the valleyH1237 of Megiddon.H4023 [12] And the landH776 shall mourn,H5594(QalPerf) everyH4940 familyH4940 apart;H905 the familyH4940 of the houseH1004 of DavidH1732 apart, and their wivesH802 apart; the familyH4940 of the houseH1004 of NathanH5416 apart, and their wivesH802 apart; [13] The familyH4940 of the houseH1004 of LeviH3878 apart, and their wivesH802 apart; the familyH4940 of ShimeiH8097 apart, and their wivesH802 apart; [14] All the familiesH4940 that remain,H7604(NiphPtc) every familyH4940 apart, and their wivesH802 apart.
