Yahweh’s^§ word that came to Hosea the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

Hosea 1:1 “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “Lord” (all caps) in other translations.

λογος κυριου ος εγενηθη προς ωσηε τον του βεηρι εν ημεραις οζιου και ιωαθαμ και αχαζ και εζεκιου βασιλεων ιουδα και εν ημεραις ιεροβοαμ υιου ιωας βασιλεως ισραηλ

Yahweh said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel on the house of Jehu, and will cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to cease.

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Call H7121 (QalImpv) his name H8034 Jezreel; H3157 for yet a little H4592 while, and I will avenge^§ H6485 (QalPerf) the blood H1818 of Jezreel H3157 upon the house H1004 of Jehu, H3058 and will cause to cease H7673 (HiphPerf) the kingdom H4468 of the house H1004 of Israel. Hosea 1:4 Heb. visit

και ειπεν κυριος προς αυτον καλεσον το ονομα αυτου ιεζραελ διοτι ετι μικρον και εκδικησω το αιμα του ιεζραελ επι τον οικον ιου και καταπαυσω βασιλειαν οικου ισραηλ

It will happen in that day that I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel.”

και εσται εν τη ημερα εκεινη συντριψω το τοξον του ισραηλ εν τη κοιλαδι του ιεζραελ

She conceived again, and bore a daughter. Then he said to him, “Call her name Lo-Ruhamah,° for I will no longer have mercy on the house of Israel, that I should in any way pardon them.

Hosea 1:6 Lo-Ruhamah means “not loved”.

And she conceived again, H2029 (QalImpf) and bare H3205 (QalImpf) a daughter. Yet the number of the children of Israel will be as the sand of the sea, which can’t be measured or counted; and it will come to pass that, in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’

The children of Judah and the children of Israel will be gathered together, and they will appoint themselves one head, and will go up from the land; for great will be the day of Jezreel.

Yahweh said to me, “Go again, love a woman loved by another, and an adulteress, even as Yahweh loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods, and love cakes of raisins.”

και ειπεν κυριος προς με ετι πορευθητι και αγαπησον γυναικα αγαπωσαν πονηρα και μοιχαλιν καθως αγαπα ο θεος τους υιους ισραηλ και αυτοι αποβλεπουσιν επι θεους αλλοτριους και φιλουσιν πεμματα μετα σταφιδων

For the children of Israel shall live many days without king, without prince, without sacrifice, without sacred stone, and without ephod or idols.

For the children H1121 of Israel H3478 shall abide H3427 (QalImpf) many H7227 days H3117 without a king, H4428 and without a prince, H8269 and without a sacrifice, H2077 and without an image,^§ H4676 and without an ephod, H646 and without teraphim: H8655

Hosea 3:4 Heb. a standing or statue

διοτι ημερας πολλας καθησονται οι υιοι ισραηλ ουκ οντος βασιλεως ουδε οντος αρχοντος ουδε ουσης θυσιας ουδε οντος θυσιαστηριου ουδε ιερατειας ουδε δηλων

Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek Yahweh their God, and David their king, and shall come with trembling to Yahweh and to his blessings in the last days.

Hear Yahweh’s word, you children of Israel, for Yahweh has a charge against the inhabitants of the land: “Indeed there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land.

ακουσατε λογον κυριου υιοι ισραηλ διοτι κρισις τω κυριω προς τους κατοικουντας την γην διοτι ουκ εστιν αληθεια ουδε ελεος ουδε επιγνωσις θεου επι της γης

“Though you, Israel, play the prostitute, yet don’t let Judah offend; and don’t come to Gilgal, neither go up to Beth Aven, nor swear, ‘As Yahweh lives.’

Though thou, Israel, H3478 play the harlot, H2181 (QalActPtc) yet let not Judah H3063 offend; H816 (QalImpf) and come H935 (QalImpf) not ye unto Gilgal, H1537 neither go ye up H5927 (QalImpf) to Beth-aven, H1007 nor swear, H7650 (NiphImpf) The Lord H3068 liveth. H2416

συ δε ισραηλ μη αγνοει και ιουδα μη εισπορευεσθε εις γαλγαλα και μη αναβαινετε εις τον οικον ων και μη ομνυετε ζωντα κυριον

For Israel has behaved extremely stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer. Then how will Yahweh feed them like a lamb in a meadow?

For Israel H3478 slideth back H5637 (QalPerf) as a backsliding H5637 (QalActPtc) heifer: H6510 now the Lord H3068 will feed H7462 (QalImpf) them as a lamb H3532 in a large place. H4800

οτι ως δαμαλις παροιστρωσα παροιστρησεν ισραηλ νυν νεμησει αυτους κυριος ως αμνον εν ευρυχωρω

“Listen to this, you priests! Listen, house of Israel, and give ear, house of the king! For the judgment is against you; for you have been a snare at Mizpah, and a net spread on Tabor.

ακουσατε ταυτα οι ιερεις και προσεχετε οικος ισραηλ και ο οικος του βασιλεως ενωτιζεσθε διοτι προς υμας εστιν το κριμα οτι παγις εγενηθητε τη σκοπια και ως δικτυον εκτεταμενον επι το ιταβυριον

I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me; for now, Ephraim, you have played the prostitute. Israel is defiled.

εγω εγνων τον εφραιμ και ισραηλ ουκ απεστιν απ εμου διοτι νυν εξεπορνευσεν εφραιμ εμιανθη ισραηλ

The pride of Israel testifies to his face. Therefore Israel and Ephraim will stumble in their iniquity. Judah also will stumble with them.

And the pride H1347 of Israel H3478 doth testify H6030 (QalPerf) to his face: H6440 therefore shall Israel H3478 and Ephraim H669 fall H3782 (NiphImpf) in their iniquity; H5771 Judah H3063 also shall fall H3782 (QalPerf) with them.

και ταπεινωθησεται η υβρις του ισραηλ εις προσωπον αυτου και ισραηλ και εφραιμ ασθενησουσιν εν ταις αδικιαις αυτων και ασθενησει και ιουδας μετ αυτων

Ephraim will become a desolation in the day of rebuke. Among the tribes of Israel, I have made known that which will surely be.

εφραιμ εις αφανισμον εγενετο εν ημεραις ελεγχου εν ταις φυλαις του ισραηλ εδειξα πιστα

In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing. There is prostitution in Ephraim. Israel is defiled.
