he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the springs which were outside of the city, and they helped him.

“Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or dismayed because of the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude who is with him; for there is a greater one with us than with him.

‘Be strong and courageous, be not afraid, nor be cast down from the face of the king of Asshur, and from the face of all the multitude that is with him, for with us are more than with him.

Yahweh sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, the leaders, and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. When he had come into the house of his god, those who came out of his own body° killed him there with the sword.

and Jehovah sendeth a messenger, and cutteth off every mighty one of valour-both leader and head-in the camp of the king of Asshur, and he turneth back with shame of face to his land, and entereth the house of his god, and those coming out of his bowels have caused him to fall there by the sword.

Many brought gifts to Yahweh to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from then on.

and many are bringing in an offering to Jehovah, to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, and he is lifted up before the eyes of all the nations after this.

He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, after the abominations of the nations whom Yahweh cast out before the children of Israel.

But did H6213 (QalImpf) [that which was] evil H7451 in the sight H5869 of the Lord, H3068 like unto the abominations H8441 of the heathen, H1471 whom the Lord H3068 had cast out H3423 (HiphPerf) before H6440 the children H1121 of Israel. H3478

and he doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, like the abominations of the nations that Jehovah dispossessed from the presence of the sons of Israel,

Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that they did more evil than did the nations whom Yahweh destroyed before the children of Israel.

So Manasseh H4519 made H8582 Judah H3063 and the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of Jerusalem H3389 to err, H8582 (HiphImpf) [and] to do H6213 (QalInf) worse H7451 than the heathen, H1471 whom the Lord H3068 had destroyed H8045 (HiphPerf) before H6440 the children H1121 of Israel. H3478

And Manasseh maketh Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, to do evil above the nations that Jehovah destroyed from the presence of the sons of Israel.

When he was in distress, he begged Yahweh his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers.

And when he was in affliction, H6887 (HiphInf) he besought H2470 (PielPerf) the Lord H3068 his God, H430 and humbled H3665 (NiphImpf) himself greatly H3966 before H6440 the God H430 of his fathers, H1

And when he is in distress he hath appeased the face of Jehovah his God, and is humbled exceedingly before the God of his fathers,

He didn’t humble himself before Yahweh, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but this same Amon trespassed more and more.

and hath not been humbled before Jehovah, like the humbling of Manasseh his father, for Amon himself hath multiplied guilt.

because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and against its inhabitants, and have humbled yourself before me, and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you,” says Yahweh.

Because thy heart is tender, and thou art humbled before God in thy hearing His words concerning this place, and concerning its inhabitants, and art humbled before Me, and dost rend thy garments, and weep before Me: even I also have heard-the affirmation of Jehovah.

There was no Passover like that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet, nor did any of the kings of Israel keep such a Passover as Josiah kept—with the priests, the Levites, and all Judah and Israel who were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

And there was no passover H6453 like H3644 to that kept H6213 (NiphPerf) in Israel H3478 from the days H3117 of Samuel H8050 the prophet; H5030 neither did H6213 (QalPerf) all the kings H4428 of Israel H3478 keep H6213 (QalPerf) such a passover H6453 as Josiah H2977 kept, H6213 (QalPerf) and the priests, H3548 and the Levites, H3881 and all Judah H3063 and Israel H3478 that were present, H4672 (NiphPtc) and the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of Jerusalem. And there hath not been made a passover like it in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet, and none of the kings of Israel made such a passover as Josiah hath made, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel who are found, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

He did that which was evil in Yahweh his God’s sight. He didn’t humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from Yahweh’s mouth.

Some of the heads of fathers’ households, when they came to Yahweh’s house which is in Jerusalem, offered willingly for God’s house to set it up in its place.

And some of the heads of the fathers in their coming in to the house of Jehovah that is in Jerusalem, have offered willingly for the house of God, to establish it on its base;

So the priests and the Levites, with some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, lived in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.

So the priests, H3548 and the Levites, H3881 and [some] of the people, H5971 and the singers, H7891 (PolePtc) and the porters, H7778 and the Nethinims, H5411 dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) in their cities, H5892 and all Israel H3478 in their cities. H5892

And the priests dwell, and the Levites, and of the people, and the singers, and the gatekeepers, and the Nethinim, in their cities; even all Israel in their cities.

In spite of their fear because of the peoples of the surrounding lands, they set the altar on its base; and they offered burnt offerings on it to Yahweh, even burnt offerings morning and evening.

And they establish the altar on its bases, because of the fear upon them of the peoples of the lands, and he causeth burnt-offerings to ascend upon it to Jehovah, burnt-offerings for the morning and for the evening.

so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard far away.

they came near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we seek your God as you do; and we have been sacrificing to him since the days of Esar Haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.”

and they draw nigh unto Zerubbabel, and unto heads of the fathers, and say to them, ‘Let us build with you; for, like you, we seek to your God, and we are not sacrificing since the days of Esar-Haddon king of Asshur, who brought us up hither.’

Some of the children of Israel, including some of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

And there go up of the sons of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers, and the Nethinim, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

I gathered them together to the river that runs to Ahava; and there we encamped three days. Then I looked around at the people and the priests, and found there were none of the sons of Levi.

For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy offspring have mixed themselves with the peoples of the lands. Yes, the hand of the princes and rulers has been chief in this trespass.”

When I heard this thing, I tore my garment and my robe, and pulled the hair out of my head and of my beard, and sat down confounded.

Since the days of our fathers we have been exceedingly guilty to this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

‘From the days of our fathers we are in great guilt unto this day, and in our iniquities we have been given-we, our kings, our priests-into the hand of the kings of the lands, with sword, with captivity, and with spoiling, and with shame of face, as at this day.

“After all that has come on us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, since you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such a remnant,

‘And after all that hath come upon us for our evil works, and for our great guilt (for Thou, O our God, hast kept back of the rod from our iniquities, and hast given to us an escape like this),

Then Ezra rose up from before God’s house, and went into the room of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib. When he came there, he didn’t eat bread or drink water, for he mourned because of the trespass of the exiles.

And Ezra riseth from before the house of God, and goeth unto the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib; yea, he goeth there, bread he hath not eaten, and water he hath not drunk, for he is mourning because of the trespass of the removal.

Among the sons of the priests there were found who had married foreign women:

And there are found of the sons of the priests that have settled strange women: of the sons of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and his brethren, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah;

All these had taken foreign wives. Some of them had wives by whom they had children.

all these have taken strange women, and there are of them women-who adopt sons.

Above the horse gate, the priests made repairs, everyone across from his own house.

From above the horse-gate have the priests strengthened, each over-against his house.

Don’t cover their iniquity. Don’t let their sin be blotted out from before you; for they have insulted the builders.”

and do not cover over their iniquity, and their sin from before Thee let not be blotted out, for they have provoked to anger-over-against those building.

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children as their children. Behold,^§ we bring our sons and our daughters into bondage to be servants, and some of our daughters have been brought into bondage. It is also not in our power to help it, because other men have our fields and our vineyards.”

Nehemiah 5:5 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

Yet now our flesh H1320 [is] as the flesh H1320 of our brethren, H251 our children H1121 as their children: H1121 and, lo, we bring into bondage H3533 (QalActPtc) our sons H1121 and our daughters H1323 to be servants, H5650 and [some] of our daughters H1323 are H3426 brought unto bondage H3533 (NiphPtc) [already]: neither [is it] in our power H410 H3027 [to redeem them]; for other men H312 have our lands H7704 and vineyards. and now, as the flesh of our brethren is our flesh, as their sons are our sons, and lo, we are subduing our sons and our daughters for servants, and there are of our daughters subdued, and our hand hath no might, and our fields and our vineyards are to others.’

Also I said, “The thing that you do is not good. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies?

Also I said, H559 (QalImpf) It [is] not good H2896 that H1697 ye do: H6213 (QalActPtc) ought ye not to walk H3212 (QalImpf) in the fear H3374 of our God H430 because of the reproach H2781 of the heathen H1471 our enemies? H341 (QalActPtc)

And I say, ‘Not good is the thing that ye are doing; in the fear of our God do ye not walk, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?

But the former governors who were before me were supported by the people, and took bread and wine from them, plus forty shekels° of silver; yes, even their servants ruled over the people, but I didn’t do so, because of the fear of God.

Nehemiah 5:15 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces.

But the former H7223 governors H6346 that [had been] before H6440 me were chargeable H3513 (HiphPerf) unto the people, H5971 and had taken H3947 (QalImpf) of them bread H3899 and wine, H3196 beside H310 forty H705 shekels H8255 of silver; H3701 yea, even H1571 their servants H5288 bare rule H7980 (QalPerf) over the people: H5971 but so did H6213 (QalPerf) not I, because H6440 of the fear H3374 of God. the former governors who are before me have made themselves heavy on the people, and take of them in bread and wine, besides in silver forty shekels; also, their servants have ruled over the people-and I have not done so, because of the fear of God.

When all our enemies heard of it, all the nations that were around us were afraid, and they lost their confidence; for they perceived that this work was done by our God.

And it came to pass, that when all our enemies H341 (QalActPtc) heard H8085 (QalPerf) [thereof], and all the heathen H1471 that [were] about us H5439 saw H7200 (QalImpf) [these things], they were much H3966 cast down H5307 (QalImpf) in their own eyes: H5869 for they perceived H3045 (QalImpf) that this work H4399 was wrought H6213 (NiphPerf) of our God. and it cometh to pass, when all our enemies have heard, and all the nations who are round about us see, that they fall greatly in their own eyes, and know that by our God hath this work been done.

I put my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the governor of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem; for he was a faithful man and feared God above many.

and I charge Hanani my brother, and Hananiah head of the palace, concerning Jerusalem-for he is as a man of truth, and fearing God above many-

Some from among the heads of fathers’ households gave to the work. The governor gave to the treasury one thousand darics of gold,° fifty basins, and five hundred thirty priests’ garments.

Nehemiah 7:70 a daric was a gold coin issued by a Persian king, weighing about 8.4 grams or about 0.27 troy ounces each.

And some of H7117 the chief H7218 of the fathers H1 gave H5414 (QalPerf) unto the work. H4399 The Tirshatha H8660 gave H5414 (QalPerf) to the treasure H214 a thousand H505 drams H1871 of gold, H2091 fifty H2572 basons, H4219 five H2568 hundred H3967 and thirty H7970 priests’ H3548 garments. H3801

And from the extremity of the heads of the fathers they have given to the work; the Tirshatha hath given to the treasure, of gold, drams a thousand, bowls fifty, priests’ coats thirty and five hundred.

Some of the heads of fathers’ households gave into the treasury of the work twenty thousand darics of gold, and two thousand two hundred minas° of silver.

Nehemiah 7:71 A mina is about 600 grams or 1.3 U. S. pounds, so 2,200 minas is about 1.3 metric tons.

And [some] of the chief H7218 of the fathers H1 gave H5414 (QalPerf) to the treasure H214 of the work H4399 twenty H8147 thousand H7239 drams H1871 of gold, H2091 and two thousand H505 and two hundred H3967 pound H4488 of silver. H3701

And of the heads of the fathers they have given to the treasure of the work, of gold, drams two myriads, and of silver, pounds two thousand and two hundred.

So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all Israel lived in their cities. When the seventh month had come, the children of Israel were in their cities.

So the priests, H3548 and the Levites, H3881 and the porters, H7778 and the singers, H7891 (PolePtc) and [some] of the people, H5971 and the Nethinims, H5411 and all Israel, H3478 dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) in their cities; H5892 and when the seventh H7637 month H2320 came, H5060 (QalImpf) the children H1121 of Israel H3478 [were] in their cities. H5892

And they dwell-the priests, and the Levites, and the gatekeepers, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinim, and all Israel-in their cities, and the seventh month cometh, and the sons of Israel are in their cities.

Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people (for he was above all the people), and when he opened it, all the people stood up.

Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, “Stand up and bless Yahweh your God from everlasting to everlasting! Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise!

Then the Levites, H3881 Jeshua, H3442 and Kadmiel, H6934 Bani, H1137 Hashabniah, H2813 Sherebiah, H8274 Hodijah, H1941 Shebaniah, H7645 [and] Pethahiah, H6611 said, H559 (QalImpf) Stand up H6965 (QalImpv) [and] bless H1288 (PielImpv) the Lord H3068 your God H430 for ever H5769 and ever: H5769 and blessed H1288 (PielImpf) be thy glorious H3519 name, H8034 which is exalted H7311 (PolaPtc) above all blessing H1293 and praise. And the Levites say, even Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, Pethahiah, ‘Rise, bless Jehovah your God, from the age unto the age, and they bless the name of Thine honour that is exalted above all blessing and praise.

yet you in your manifold mercies didn’t forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud didn’t depart from over them by day, to lead them in the way; neither did the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way in which they should go.

and Thou, in Thine abundant mercies, hast not forsaken them in the wilderness-the pillar of the cloud hath not turned aside from off them by day, to lead them in the way, and the pillar of the fire by night, to give light to them and the way in which they go.

Some of the children of Judah and of the children of Benjamin lived in Jerusalem. Of the children of Judah: Athaiah the son of Uzziah, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel, of the children of Perez;

And at Jerusalem H3389 dwelt H3427 (QalPerf) [certain] of the children H1121 of Judah, H3063 and of the children H1121 of Benjamin. And in Jerusalem have dwelt of the sons of Judah, and of the sons of Benjamin. Of the sons of Judah: Athaiah son of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of Mahalaleel, of the sons of Perez;

and Mattaniah the son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, who was the chief to begin the thanksgiving in prayer, and Bakbukiah, the second among his brothers; and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.

And Mattaniah H4983 the son H1121 of Micha, H4316 the son H1121 of Zabdi, H2067 the son H1121 of Asaph, H623 [was] the principal H7218 to begin H8462 the thanksgiving H3034 (HiphImpf) in prayer: H8605 and Bakbukiah H1229 the second H4932 among his brethren, H251 and Abda H5653 the son H1121 of Shammua, H8051 the son H1121 of Galal, H1559 the son H1121 of Jeduthun. and Mattaniah son of Micha, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, is head-at the commencement he giveth thanks in prayer; and Bakbukiah is second among his brethren, and Abda son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun.

As for the villages with their fields, some of the children of Judah lived in Kiriath Arba and its towns, in Dibon and its towns, in Jekabzeel and its villages,

And for the villages, H2691 with their fields, H7704 [some] of the children H1121 of Judah H3063 dwelt H3427 (QalPerf) at Kirjatharba, H7153 and [in] the villages H2691 thereof, and at Dibon, H1769 and [in] the villages H1323 thereof, and at Jekabzeel, H3343 and [in] the villages H1323 thereof,

And at the villages with their fields, of the sons of Judah there have dwelt, in Kirjath-Arba and its small towns, and in Dibon and its small towns, and in Jekabzeel and its villages,

Then I brought the princes of Judah up on the wall, and appointed two great companies who gave thanks and went in procession. One went on the right hand on the wall toward the dung gate;

and of the sons of the priests with trumpets, Zechariah son of Jonathan, son of Shemaiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Michaiah, son of Zaccur, son of Asaph,

By the spring gate, and straight before them, they went up by the stairs of David’s city, at the ascent of the wall, above David’s house, even to the water gate eastward.

And at the fountain H5869 gate, H8179 which was over against them, they went up H5927 (QalPerf) by the stairs H4609 of the city H5892 of David, H1732 at the going up H4608 of the wall, H2346 above the house H1004 of David, H1732 even unto the water H4325 gate H8179 eastward. H4217

and by the gate of the fountain and over-against them, they have gone up by the steps of the city of David, at the going up of the wall beyond the house of David, and unto the water-gate eastward.

The other company of those who gave thanks went to meet them, and I after them, with the half of the people on the wall above the tower of the furnaces, even to the wide wall,

And the other H8145 [company of them that gave] thanks H8426 went H1980 (QalActPtc) over against H4136 [them], and I after H310 them, and the half H2677 of the people H5971 upon the wall, H2346 from beyond the tower H4026 of the furnaces H8574 even unto the broad H7342 wall; H2346

And the second thanksgiving company that is going over-against, and I after it, and half of the people on the wall from beyond the tower of the furnaces and unto the broad wall,

and above the gate of Ephraim, and by the old gate, and by the fish gate, the tower of Hananel, and the tower of Hammeah, even to the sheep gate; and they stood still in the gate of the guard.

And from above the gate H8179 of Ephraim, H669 and above the old H3465 gate, H8179 and above the fish H1709 gate, H8179 and the tower H4026 of Hananeel, H2606 and the tower H4026 of Meah, H3968 even unto the sheep H6629 gate: H8179 and they stood still H5975 (QalPerf) in the prison H4307 gate. and from beyond the gate of Ephraim, and by the old-gate, and by the fish-gate, and the tower of Hananeel, and the tower of Meah, and unto the sheep-gate-and they have stood at the prison-gate.
