When the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. When the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

και ηκουσαν οι αλλοφυλοι οτι συνηθροισθησαν παντες οι υιοι ισραηλ εις μασσηφαθ και ανεβησαν σατραπαι αλλοφυλων επι ισραηλ και ακουουσιν οι υιοι ισραηλ και εφοβηθησαν απο προσωπου αλλοφυλων

η δε αποστροφη αυτου εις αρμαθαιμ οτι εκει ην ο οικος αυτου και εδικαζεν εκει τον ισραηλ και ωκοδομησεν εκει θυσιαστηριον τω κυριω

Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me as the king over them.

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Hearken H8085 (QalImpv) unto the voice H6963 of the people H5971 in all that they say H559 (QalImpf) unto thee: for they have not rejected H3988 (QalPerf) thee, but they have rejected H3988 (QalPerf) me, that I should not reign H4427 (QalInf) over them.

και ειπεν κυριος προς σαμουηλ ακουε της φωνης του λαου καθα αν λαλησωσιν σοι οτι ου σε εξουθενηκασιν αλλ η εμε εξουδενωκασιν του μη βασιλευειν επ αυτων

Now therefore, listen to their voice. However, you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who will reign over them.”

Now therefore hearken^§ H8085 (QalImpv) unto their voice: H6963 howbeit H389 yet protest H5749 (HiphImpf) solemnly H5749 (HiphInf) unto them, and shew H5046 (HiphPerf) them the manner H4941 of the king H4428 that shall reign H4427 (QalImpf) over them.

But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,

Then Saul said to his servant, “But behold, if we go, what should we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our sacks, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

They answered them and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place.

και απεκριθη τα κορασια αυτοις και λεγουσιν αυτοις εστιν ιδου κατα προσωπον υμων νυν δια την ημεραν ηκει εις την πολιν οτι θυσια σημερον τω λαω εν βαμα

As soon as you have come into the city, you will immediately find him before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he comes, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you will find him.”

ως αν εισελθητε την πολιν ουτως ευρησετε αυτον εν τη πολει πριν αναβηναι αυτον εις βαμα του φαγειν οτι ου μη φαγη ο λαος εως του εισελθειν αυτον οτι ουτος ευλογει την θυσιαν και μετα ταυτα εσθιουσιν οι ξενοι και νυν αναβητε οτι δια την ημεραν ευρησετε αυτον

“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He will save my people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.”

As for your donkeys who were lost three days ago, don’t set your mind on them, for they have been found. For whom does all Israel desire? Is it not you and all your father’s house?”

1 Samuel 9:20 Heb. today three days

και περι των ονων σου των απολωλυιων σημερον τριταιων μη θης την καρδιαν σου αυταις οτι ευρηνται και τινι τα ωραια του ισραηλ ου σοι και τω οικω του πατρος σου

The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because it has been kept for you for the appointed time, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

και υψωσεν ο μαγειρος την κωλεαν και παρεθηκεν αυτην ενωπιον σαουλ και ειπεν σαμουηλ τω σαουλ ιδου υπολειμμα παραθες αυτο ενωπιον σου και φαγε οτι εις μαρτυριον τεθειται σοι παρα τους αλλους αποκνιζε και εφαγεν σαουλ μετα σαμουηλ εν τη ημερα εκεινη

Then Samuel took the vial of oil and poured it on his head, then kissed him and said, “Hasn’t Yahweh anointed you to be prince over his inheritance?

Let it be, when these signs have come to you, that you do what is appropriate for the occasion; for God is with you.

1 Samuel 10:7 Heb. do for thee as thine hand shall find

και εσται οταν ηξει τα σημεια ταυτα επι σε ποιει παντα οσα εαν ευρη η χειρ σου οτι θεος μετα σου

Saul’s uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” He said, “To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel.”

Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys were found.” But concerning the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he didn’t tell him.

But you have today rejected your God, who himself saves you out of all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said to him, ‘No! Set a king over us!’ Now therefore present yourselves before Yahweh by your tribes and by your thousands.”

Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom Yahweh has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?” All the people shouted and said, “Long live the king!”

Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, “What ails the people that they weep?” They told him the words of the men of Jabesh.

Saul said, “No man shall be put to death today; for today Yahweh has rescued Israel.”

He said to them, “Yahweh is witness against you, and his anointed is witness today, that you have not found anything in my hand.” They said, “He is witness.”

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, The Lord H3068 is witness H5707 against you, and his anointed H4899 is witness H5707 this day, H3117 that ye have not found H4672 (QalPerf) ought H3972 in my hand. H3027 And they answered, H559 (QalImpf) He is witness. H5707

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς τον λαον μαρτυς κυριος εν υμιν και μαρτυς χριστος αυτου σημερον εν ταυτη τη ημερα οτι ουχ ευρηκατε εν χειρι μου ουθεν και ειπαν μαρτυς

They cried to Yahweh, and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken Yahweh and have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth; but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve you.’

και εβοησαν προς κυριον και ελεγον ημαρτομεν οτι εγκατελιπομεν τον κυριον και εδουλευσαμεν τοις βααλιμ και τοις αλσεσιν και νυν εξελου ημας εκ χειρος εχθρων ημων και δουλευσομεν σοι

“When you saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when Yahweh your God was your king.

And when ye saw H7200 (QalImpf) that Nahash H5176 the king H4428 of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 came H935 (QalPerf) against you, ye said H559 (QalImpf) unto me, Nay; but a king H4428 shall reign H4427 (QalImpf) over us: when the Lord H3068 your God H430 was your king. H4428

και ειδετε οτι ναας βασιλευς υιων αμμων ηλθεν εφ υμας και ειπατε ουχι αλλ η οτι βασιλευς βασιλευσει εφ ημων και κυριος ο θεος ημων βασιλευς ημων

Isn’t it wheat harvest today? I will call to Yahweh, that he may send thunder and rain; and you will know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in Yahweh’s sight, in asking for a king.”

Is it not wheat H2406 harvest H7105 to day? ουχι θερισμος πυρων σημερον επικαλεσομαι κυριον και δωσει φωνας και υετον και γνωτε και ιδετε οτι η κακια υμων μεγαλη ην εποιησατε ενωπιον κυριου αιτησαντες εαυτοις βασιλεα

All the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to Yahweh your God, that we not die; for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for a king.”

And all the people H5971 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Pray H6419 (HithImpv) for thy servants H5650 unto the Lord H3068 thy God, H430 that we die H4191 (QalImpf) not: for we have added H3254 (QalPerf) unto all our sins H2403 this evil, H7451 to ask H7592 (QalInf) us a king. H4428

και ειπαν πας ο λαος προς σαμουηλ προσευξαι υπερ των δουλων σου προς κυριον θεον σου και ου μη αποθανωμεν οτι προστεθεικαμεν προς πασας τας αμαρτιας ημων κακιαν αιτησαντες εαυτοις βασιλεα

Don’t turn away to go after vain things which can’t profit or deliver, for they are vain.

and turn ye not aside: H5493 (QalImpf) for then should ye go after H310 vain H8414 things, which cannot profit H3276 (HiphImpf) nor deliver; H5337 (HiphImpf) for they are vain. H8414

και μη παραβητε οπισω των μηθεν οντων οι ου περανουσιν ουθεν και οι ουκ εξελουνται οτι ουθεν εισιν

For Yahweh will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased Yahweh to make you a people for himself.

For the Lord H3068 will not forsake H5203 (QalImpf) his people H5971 for his great H1419 name’s H8034 sake: because it hath pleased H2974 (HiphPerf) the Lord H3068 to make H6213 (QalInf) you his people. H5971

οτι ουκ απωσεται κυριος τον λαον αυτου δια το ονομα αυτου το μεγα οτι επιεικεως κυριος προσελαβετο υμας αυτω εις λαον

Only fear Yahweh, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things he has done for you.

When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in tombs, and in pits.

Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn’t come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash,

και ειπεν σαμουηλ τι πεποιηκας και ειπεν σαουλ οτι ειδον ως διεσπαρη ο λαος απ εμου και συ ου παρεγενου ως διεταξω εν τω μαρτυριω των ημερων και οι αλλοφυλοι συνηχθησαν εις μαχεμας

Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you; for now Yahweh would have established your kingdom on Israel forever.

And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) to Saul, H7586 Thou hast done foolishly: H5528 (NiphPerf) thou hast not kept H8104 (QalPerf) the commandment H4687 of the Lord H3068 thy God, H430 which he commanded H6680 (PielPerf) thee: for now would the Lord H3068 have established H3559 (HiphPerf) thy kingdom H4467 upon Israel H3478 for H5704 ever. How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the plunder of their enemies which they found? For now there has been no great slaughter among the Philistines.”

αλλ οτι ει εφαγεν εσθων ο λαος σημερον των σκυλων των εχθρων αυτων ων ευρεν οτι νυν αν μειζων ην η πληγη εν τοις αλλοφυλοις

For as Yahweh lives, who saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.

οτι ζη κυριος ο σωσας τον ισραηλ οτι εαν αποκριθη κατα ιωναθαν του υιου μου θανατω αποθανειται και ουκ ην ο αποκρινομενος εκ παντος του λαου

Saul said, “God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan.”

και ειπεν αυτω σαουλ ταδε ποιησαι μοι ο θεος και ταδε προσθειη οτι θανατω αποθανη σημερον

The people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God today!” So the people rescued Jonathan, so he didn’t die.

και ειπεν ο λαος προς σαουλ ει σημερον θανατωθησεται ο ποιησας την σωτηριαν την μεγαλην ταυτην εν ισραηλ ζη κυριος ει πεσειται της τριχος της κεφαλης αυτου επι την γην οτι ο λαος του θεου εποιησεν την ημεραν ταυτην και προσηυξατο ο λαος περι ιωναθαν εν τη ημερα εκεινη και ουκ απεθανεν

“It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king, for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.” Samuel was angry; and he cried to Yahweh all night.

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim.° Because you have rejected Yahweh’s word, he has also rejected you from being king.”

Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected Yahweh’s word, and Yahweh has rejected you from being king over Israel.”
