There was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and childless.

And there was a certain H259 man H376 of Zorah, H6881 of the family H4940 of the Danites, H1839 whose name H8034 was Manoah; H4495 and his wife H802 was barren, H6135 and bare H3205 (QalPerf) not.

και εγενετο ανηρ εκ σαραα εκ της φυλης του δαν και ονομα αυτω μανωε και η γυνη αυτου στειρα και ουκ ετικτεν

Yahweh’s angel appeared to the woman, and said to her, “See now, you are barren and childless; but you shall conceive and bear a son.

And the angel H4397 of the Lord H3068 appeared H7200 (NiphImpf) unto the woman, H802 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, H6135 and bearest H3205 (QalPerf) not: but thou shalt conceive, H2029 (QalPerf) and bear H3205 (QalPerf) a son. H1121

και ωφθη αγγελος κυριου προς την γυναικα και ειπεν προς αυτην ιδου δη συ στειρα και ου τετοκας και εν γαστρι εξεις και τεξη υιον

for, behold, you shall conceive and give birth to a son. No razor shall come on his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb. He shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”

for, lo, thou shalt conceive, H2030 and bear H3205 (QalActPtc) a son; H1121 and no razor H4177 shall come H5927 (QalImpf) on his head: H7218 for the child H5288 shall be a Nazarite H5139 unto God H430 from the womb: H990 and he shall begin H2490 (HiphImpf) to deliver H3467 (HiphInf) Israel H3478 out of the hand H3027 of the Philistines. οτι ιδου συ εν γαστρι εξεις και τεξη υιον και ουκ αναβησεται σιδηρος επι την κεφαλην αυτου οτι ηγιασμενον ναζιραιον εσται τω θεω το παιδαριον εκ της γαστρος και αυτος αρξεται σωζειν τον ισραηλ εκ χειρος αλλοφυλων

Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, “A man of God came to me, and his face was like the face of the angel of God, very awesome. I didn’t ask him where he was from, neither did he tell me his name;

και ηλθεν η γυνη και ειπεν τω ανδρι αυτης λεγουσα οτι ανθρωπος του θεου ηλθεν προς με και η ορασις αυτου ως ορασις αγγελου του θεου επιφανης σφοδρα και ηρωτων ποθεν εστιν και το ονομα αυτου ουκ απηγγειλεν μοι

She may not eat of anything that comes of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing. Let her observe all that I commanded her.”

απο παντων οσα εκπορευεται εξ αμπελου ου φαγεται και οινον και σικερα μη πιετω και παν ακαθαρτον μη φαγετω παντα οσα ενετειλαμην αυτη φυλαξασθω

Yahweh’s angel said to Manoah, “Though you detain me, I won’t eat your bread. If you will prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to Yahweh.” For Manoah didn’t know that he was Yahweh’s angel.

And the angel H4397 of the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Manoah, H4495 Though thou detain H6113 (QalImpf) me, I will not eat H398 (QalImpf) of thy bread: H3899 and if H518 thou wilt offer H6213 (QalImpf) a burnt offering, H5930 thou must offer H5927 (HiphImpf) it unto the Lord. H3068 For Manoah H4495 knew H3045 (QalPerf) not that he was an angel H4397 of the Lord. H3068

και ειπεν ο αγγελος κυριου προς μανωε εαν βιαση με ου φαγομαι των αρτων σου και εαν ποιησης ολοκαυτωμα κυριω ανοισεις αυτο οτι ουκ εγνω μανωε οτι αγγελος κυριου εστιν

But Yahweh’s angel didn’t appear to Manoah or to his wife any more. Then Manoah knew that he was Yahweh’s angel.

But the angel H4397 of the Lord H3068 did no more H3254 (QalPerf) appear H7200 (NiphInf) to Manoah H4495 and to his wife. H802 Then Manoah H4495 knew H3045 (QalPerf) that he was an angel H4397 of the Lord. H3068

και ου προσεθηκεν ετι ο αγγελος κυριου οφθηναι προς μανωε και προς την γυναικα αυτου τοτε εγνω μανωε οτι αγγελος κυριου εστιν

But his wife said to him, “If Yahweh were pleased to kill us, he wouldn’t have received a burnt offering and a meal offering at our hand, and he wouldn’t have shown us all these things, nor would he have told us such things as these at this time.”

But his wife H802 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, If H3863 the Lord H3068 were pleased H2654 (QalPerf) to kill H4191 (HiphInf) us, he would not have received H3947 (QalPerf) a burnt offering H5930 and a meat offering H4503 at our hands, H3027 neither would he have shewed H7200 (HiphPerf) us all these things, nor would as at this time H6256 have told H8085 (HiphPerf) us such things as these. και ειπεν αυτω η γυνη αυτου ει εβουλετο κυριος θανατωσαι ημας ουκ αν εδεξατο εκ των χειρων ημων ολοκαυτωμα και θυσιαν και ουκ αν εφωτισεν ημας παντα ταυτα και ουκ αν ακουστα εποιησεν ημιν ταυτα

But his father and his mother didn’t know that it was of Yahweh; for he sought an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines ruled over Israel.

But his father H1 and his mother H517 knew H3045 (QalPerf) not that it was of the Lord, H3068 that he sought H1245 (PielPtc) an occasion H8385 against the Philistines: H6430 for at that time H6256 the Philistines H6430 had dominion H4910 (QalActPtc) over Israel. H3478

και ο πατηρ αυτου και η μητηρ αυτου ουκ εγνωσαν οτι παρα κυριου εστιν οτι ανταποδομα αυτος εκζητει εκ των αλλοφυλων και εν τω καιρω εκεινω αλλοφυλοι εκυριευον των υιων ισραηλ

Yahweh’s Spirit came mightily on him, and he tore him as he would have torn a young goat with his bare hands, but he didn’t tell his father or his mother what he had done.

but if you can’t tell me the answer, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.” They said to him, “Tell us your riddle, that we may hear it.”

και εαν μη δυνασθητε απαγγειλαι μοι και δωσετε υμεις εμοι τριακοντα σινδονας και τριακοντα στολας ιματιων και ειπαν αυτω προβαλου το προβλημα σου και ακουσομεθα αυτου

He said to them, “Out of the eater came out food. Out of the strong came out sweetness.” They couldn’t in three days declare the riddle.

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, Out of the eater H398 (QalActPtc) came forth H3318 (QalPerf) meat, H3978 And out of the strong H5794 came forth H3318 (QalPerf) sweetness. H4966 And they could H3201 (QalPerf) not in three H7969 days H3117 expound H5046 (HiphInf) the riddle. H2420

και ειπεν αυτοις εκ του εσθοντος εξηλθεν βρωσις και εξ ισχυρου εξηλθεν γλυκυ και ουκ ηδυνασθησαν απαγγειλαι το προβλημα επι τρεις ημερας

On the seventh day, they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband, that he may declare to us the riddle, lest we burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you called us to impoverish us? Isn’t that so?”

And it came to pass on the seventh H7637 day, H3117 that they said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samson’s H8123 wife, H802 Entice H6601 (PielImpv) thy husband, H376 that he may declare H5046 (HiphImpf) unto us the riddle, H2420 lest we burn H8313 (QalImpf) thee and thy father’s H1 house H1004 with fire: H784 have ye called H7121 (QalPerf) us to take that we have?^§ H3423 (QalInf) is it not so?

Judges 14:15 Heb. to possess us, or to impoverish us?

και εγενετο εν τη ημερα τη τεταρτη και ειπαν τη γυναικι σαμψων απατησον δη τον ανδρα σου και απαγγειλατω σοι το προβλημα μηποτε εμπυρισωμεν σε και τον οικον του πατρος σου εν πυρι η πτωχευσαι εκαλεσατε ημας

Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, “You just hate me, and don’t love me. You’ve told a riddle to the children of my people, and haven’t told it to me.” He said to her, “Behold, I haven’t told my father or my mother, so why should I tell you?”

και εκλαυσεν η γυνη σαμψων επ αυτον και ειπεν αυτω μεμισηκας με και ουκ ηγαπηκας με οτι το προβλημα ο προεβαλου τοις υιοις του λαου μου καμοι ουκ απηγγειλας αυτο και ειπεν αυτη σαμψων ιδου τω πατρι μου και τη μητρι μου ουκ απηγγειλα αυτο και σοι απαγγελω

The men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” He said to them, “If you hadn’t plowed with my heifer, you wouldn’t have found out my riddle.”

And the men H582 of the city H5892 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him on the seventh H7637 day H3117 before the sun H2775 went down, H935 (QalImpf) What is sweeter H4966 than honey? H1706 And what is stronger H5794 than a lion? και ειπαν αυτω οι ανδρες της πολεως εν τη ημερα τη εβδομη πριν δυναι τον ηλιον τι γλυκυτερον μελιτος και τι ισχυροτερον λεοντος και ειπεν αυτοις σαμψων ει μη κατεδαμασατε μου την δαμαλιν ουκ αν ευρετε το προβλημα μου

But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a young goat. He said, “I will go in to my wife’s room.” But her father wouldn’t allow him to go in.

But it came to pass within a while after, H3117 in the time H3117 of wheat H2406 harvest, H7105 that Samson H8123 visited H6485 (QalImpf) his wife H802 with a kid; H1423 H5795 and he said, H559 (QalImpf) I will go in H935 (QalImpf) to my wife H802 into the chamber. H2315 But her father H1 would not suffer H5414 (QalPerf) him to go in. H935 (QalInf)

και εγενετο μεθ ημερας εν ημεραις θερισμου πυρων και επεσκεψατο σαμψων την γυναικα αυτου φερων εριφον αιγων και ειπεν εισελευσομαι προς την γυναικα μου εις τον κοιτωνα και ουκ αφηκεν αυτον ο πατηρ αυτης εισελθειν προς αυτην

Her father said, “I most certainly thought that you utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Isn’t her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please, take her instead.”

και ειπεν ο πατηρ αυτης ειπας ειπα οτι μισων εμισησας αυτην και εδωκα αυτην τω συνεταιρω σου ουκ ιδου η αδελφη αυτης η νεωτερα κρεισσων αυτης εστιν εστω δη σοι αντι αυτης

Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cave in Etam’s rock, and said to Samson, “Don’t you know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?” He said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”

Judges 15:11 Heb. went down

και κατεβησαν τρεις χιλιαδες ανδρων εξ ιουδα επι την οπην της πετρας ηταμ και ειπαν προς σαμψων ουκ οιδας οτι αρχουσιν ημων οι αλλοφυλοι και ινα τι ταυτα εποιησας ημιν και ειπεν αυτοις σαμψων καθως εποιησαν ημιν ουτως εποιησα αυτοις

They spoke to him, saying, “No, but we will bind you securely and deliver you into their hands; but surely we will not kill you.” They bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock.

και ωμοσαν αυτω λεγοντες ουχι αλλα δεσμω δησομεν σε και παραδωσομεν σε εις χειρας αυτων θανατω δε ου θανατωσομεν σε και εδησαν αυτον δυο καλωδιοις καινοις και ανηγαγον αυτον εκ της πετρας

Samson said to her, “If they bind me with seven green cords that were never dried, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.”

And Samson H8123 said H559 (QalImpf) unto her, If they bind H631 (QalImpf) me with seven H7651 green H3892 withs^§ H3499 that were never dried, H2717 (PualPerf) then shall I be weak, H2470 (QalPerf) and be as another^§ H259 man. H120

Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green cords which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.

και ανηνεγκαν αυτη οι σατραπαι των αλλοφυλων επτα νευρας υγρας μη ηρημωμενας και εδησεν αυτον εν αυταις

Now she had an ambush waiting in the inner room. She said to him, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” He broke the cords as a flax thread is broken when it touches the fire. So his strength was not known.

Now there were men lying in wait, H693 (QalActPtc) abiding H3427 (QalActPtc) with her in the chamber. H2315 And she said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, The Philistines H6430 be upon thee, Samson. H8123 And he brake H5423 (PielImpf) the withs, H3499 as a thread H6616 of tow H5296 is broken H5423 (NiphImpf) when it toucheth^§ H7306 (HiphInf) the fire. H784 So his strength H3581 was not known. Judges 16:9 Heb. smelleth

και το ενεδρον αυτου εκαθητο εν τω ταμιειω και ειπεν προς αυτον αλλοφυλοι επι σε σαμψων και διερρηξεν τας νευρας ον τροπον διασπαται κλωσμα του αποτιναγματος εν τω οσφρανθηναι πυρος και ουκ εγνωσθη η ισχυς αυτου

He said to her, “If they only bind me with new ropes with which no work has been done, then shall I become weak, and be as another man.”

She said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and have not told me where your great strength lies.”

και ειπεν προς αυτον δαλιλα πως ερεις ηγαπηκα σε και η καρδια σου ουκ εστιν μετ εμου τουτο τριτον παρελογισω με και ουκ απηγγειλας μοι εν τινι η ισχυς σου η μεγαλη

He told her all his heart and said to her, “No razor has ever come on my head; for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me and I will become weak, and be like any other man.”

that he told H5046 (HiphImpf) her all his heart, H3820 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto her, There hath not come H5927 (QalPerf) a razor H4177 upon mine head; H7218 for I have been a Nazarite H5139 unto God H430 from my mother’s H517 womb: H990 if I be shaven, H1548 (PualPerf) then my strength H3581 will go H5493 (QalPerf) from me, and I shall become weak, H2470 (QalPerf) and be like any other man. και απηγγειλεν αυτη παντα τα απο καρδιας αυτου και ειπεν αυτη ξυρον ουκ αναβησεται επι την κεφαλην μου οτι ναζιραιος θεου εγω ειμι εκ κοιλιας μητρος μου και εαν ξυρησωμαι αποστησεται απ εμου η ισχυς μου και ασθενησω και εσομαι κατα παντας τους ανθρωπους

She said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” He awoke out of his sleep, and said, “I will go out as at other times, and shake myself free.” But he didn’t know that Yahweh had departed from him.

And she said, H559 (QalImpf) The Philistines H6430 be upon thee, Samson. H8123 And he awoke H3364 (QalImpf) out of his sleep, H8142 and said, H559 (QalImpf) I will go out H3318 (QalImpf) as at other times before, H6471 and shake H5287 (NiphImpf) myself. And he wist H3045 (QalPerf) not that the Lord H3068 was departed H5493 (QalPerf) from him.

και ειπεν αυτω δαλιλα οι αλλοφυλοι επι σε σαμψων και εξηγερθη εκ του υπνου αυτου και ειπεν εξελευσομαι και ποιησω καθως αει και αποτιναξομαι και αυτος ουκ εγνω οτι κυριος απεστη απ αυτου

In those days there was no king in Israel. In those days the tribe of the Danites sought an inheritance to dwell in; for to that day, their inheritance had not fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.

In those days H3117 there was no king H4428 in Israel: H3478 and in those days H3117 the tribe H7626 of the Danites H1839 sought H1245 (PielPtc) them an inheritance H5159 to dwell in; H3427 (QalInf) for unto that day H3117 all their inheritance H5159 had not fallen H5307 (QalPerf) unto them among H8432 the tribes H7626 of Israel. But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and went near Jebus (also called Jerusalem). With him were a couple of saddled donkeys. His concubine also was with him.

και ουκ ηθελησεν ο ανηρ αυλισθηναι και ανεστη και απηλθεν και παρεγενοντο εως κατεναντι ιεβους αυτη εστιν ιερουσαλημ και μετ αυτου ζευγος υποζυγιων επισεσαγμενων και η παλλακη αυτου μετ αυτου

His master said to him, “We won’t enter into the city of a foreigner that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”

και ειπεν ο κυριος αυτου προς αυτον ου μη εκκλινω εις πολιν αλλοτριου η ουκ εστιν εκ των υιων ισραηλ και παρελευσομεθα εως γαβαα

Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”

Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred chosen men who were left-handed. Every one of them could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.

Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh Gilead. There still weren’t enough for them.

It shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we didn’t take for each man his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them; otherwise you would now be guilty.’ ”

Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen, my daughter. Don’t go to glean in another field, and don’t go from here, but stay here close to my maidens.

Then she said, “Let me find favor in your sight, my lord, because you have comforted me, and because you have spoken kindly to your servant, though I am not as one of your servants.”
