I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God^§ has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

Ecclesiastes 1:13 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).

Ecclesiastes 1:13 Or, to afflict them

και εδωκα την καρδιαν μου του εκζητησαι και του κατασκεψασθαι εν τη σοφια περι παντων των γινομενων υπο τον ουρανον οτι περισπασμον πονηρον εδωκεν ο θεος τοις υιοις του ανθρωπου του περισπασθαι εν αυτω

I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.

For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

For to the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

Ecclesiastes 2:26 Heb. before him

οτι τω ανθρωπω τω αγαθω προ προσωπου αυτου εδωκεν σοφιαν και γνωσιν και ευφροσυνην και τω αμαρτανοντι εδωκεν περισπασμον του προσθειναι και του συναγαγειν του δουναι τω αγαθω προ προσωπου του θεου οτι και γε τουτο ματαιοτης και προαιρεσις πνευματος

Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this.

Say H559 (QalImpf) not thou, What is the cause that the former H7223 days H3117 were better H2896 than these? for thou dost not enquire H7592 (QalPerf) wisely^§ H2451 concerning this.

Ecclesiastes 7:10 Heb. out of wisdom

μη ειπης τι εγενετο οτι αι ημεραι αι προτεραι ησαν αγαθαι υπερ ταυτας οτι ουκ εν σοφια επηρωτησας περι τουτου

Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun.

Wisdom H2451 is good H2896 with an inheritance:^§ H5159 and by it there is profit H3148 to them that see H7200 (QalActPtc) the sun. H8121

Ecclesiastes 7:11 Or, as good as an inheritance, yea, better too

αγαθη σοφια μετα κληροδοσιας και περισσεια τοις θεωρουσιν τον ηλιον

For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.

εκυκλωσα εγω και η καρδια μου του γνωναι και του κατασκεψασθαι και ζητησαι σοφιαν και ψηφον και του γνωναι ασεβους αφροσυνην και σκληριαν και περιφοραν

Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (even though eyes see no sleep day or night),

Ecclesiastes 10:1 Heb. Flies of death

μυιαι θανατουσαι σαπριουσιν σκευασιαν ελαιου ηδυσματος τιμιον ολιγον σοφιας υπερ δοξαν αφροσυνης μεγαλης

If the ax is blunt, and one doesn’t sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but skill brings success.

Isaiah 10:13 Or, like many people

Yahweh’s Spirit will rest on him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Yahweh.

Isaiah 29:14 Heb. I will add

δια τουτο ιδου εγω προσθησω του μεταθειναι τον λαον τουτον και μεταθησω αυτους και απολω την σοφιαν των σοφων και την συνεσιν των συνετων κρυψω

There will be stability in your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of Yahweh is your treasure.

And wisdom H2451 and knowledge H1847 shall be the stability H530 of thy times, H6256 and strength H2633 of salvation:^§ H3444 the fear H3374 of the Lord H3068 is his treasure. H214

Isaiah 33:6 Heb. salvations

εν νομω παραδοθησονται εν θησαυροις η σωτηρια ημων εκει σοφια και επιστημη και ευσεβεια προς τον κυριον ουτοι εισιν θησαυροι δικαιοσυνης

For you have trusted in your wickedness. You have said, ‘No one sees me.’ Your wisdom and your knowledge has perverted you. You have said in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me.’

Isaiah 47:10 Or, caused thee to turn away

τη ελπιδι της πονηριας σου συ γαρ ειπας εγω ειμι και ουκ εστιν ετερα γνωθι οτι η συνεσις τουτων και η πορνεια σου εσται σοι αισχυνη και ειπας τη καρδια σου εγω ειμι και ουκ εστιν ετερα

The wise men are disappointed. They are dismayed and trapped. Behold, they have rejected Yahweh’s word. What kind of wisdom is in them?

Ezekiel 28:5 Heb. by the greatness of thy wisdom

εν τη πολλη επιστημη σου και εμπορια σου επληθυνας δυναμιν σου υψωθη η καρδια σου εν τη δυναμει σου

therefore, behold, I will bring strangers on you, the terrible of the nations. They will draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom. They will defile your brightness.
