and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for Yahweh your God will deliver it into your hand.

Yahweh said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Joshua, H3091 Stretch out H5186 (QalImpv) the spear H3591 that [is] in thy hand H3027 toward Ai; H5857 for I will give H5414 (QalImpf) it into thine hand. And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, ‘Stretch out with the javelin which is in thy hand towards Ai, for into thy hand I give it;’ and Joshua stretcheth out with the javelin which is in his hand toward the city,

The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand and entered into the city and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire.

And the ambush H693 (QalActPtc) arose H6965 (QalPerf) quickly H4120 out of their place, H4725 and they ran H7323 (QalImpf) as soon as he had stretched out H5186 (QalInf) his hand: H3027 and they entered H935 (QalImpf) into the city, H5892 and took H3920 (QalImpf) it, and hasted H4116 (PielImpf) and set H3341 (HiphImpf) the city H5892 on fire. and the ambush hath risen with haste, out of its place, and they run at the stretching out of his hand, and go into the city, and capture it, and hasten, and burn the city with fire.

When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.

And when the men H582 of Ai H5857 looked H6437 (QalImpf) behind H310 them, they saw, H7200 (QalImpf) and, behold, the smoke H6227 of the city H5892 ascended up H5927 (QalPerf) to heaven, H8064 and they had no power H3027 to flee H5127 (QalInf) this way or that way: H2008 and the people H5971 that fled H5127 (QalPtc) to the wilderness H4057 turned back H2015 (NiphPerf) upon the pursuers. And the men of Ai look behind them, and see, and lo, the smoke of the city hath gone up unto the heavens, and there hath not been in them power to flee hither and thither-and the people who are fleeing to the wilderness have turned against the pursuer,-

For Joshua didn’t draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

And Joshua hath not brought back his hand which he stretched out with the javelin till that he hath devoted all the inhabitants of Ai;

Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take supplies in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them. Tell them, “We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us.” ’

‘And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land speak unto us, saying, Take in your hand provision for the way, and go to meet them, and ye have said unto them, Your servants we are, and now, make with us a covenant;

Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do.”

and now, lo, we are in thy hand, as it is good, and as it is right in thine eyes to do to us-do.’

He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them.

And so did H6213 (QalImpf) he unto them, and delivered H5337 (HiphImpf) them out of the hand H3027 of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 that they slew H2026 (QalPerf) them not.

And he doth to them so, and delivereth them from the hand of the sons of Israel, and they have not slain them;

The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying, “Don’t abandon your servants! Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill country have gathered together against us.”

And the men of Gibeon send unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, saying, ‘Let not thy hand cease from thy servants; come up unto us with haste, and give safety to us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorite, dwelling in the hill-country, have been assembled against us.’

Yahweh said to Joshua, “Don’t fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands. Not a man of them will stand before you.”

And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, ‘Be not afraid of them, for into thy hand I have given them, there doth not stand a man of them in thy presence.’

but don’t stay there. Pursue your enemies, and attack them from the rear. Don’t allow them to enter into their cities; for Yahweh your God has delivered them into your hand.”

and ye, stand not, pursue after your enemies, and ye have smitten the hindmost of them; suffer them not to go in unto their cities, for Jehovah your God hath given them into your hand.’

Yahweh delivered it also, with its king, into the hand of Israel. He struck it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls who were in it. He left no one remaining in it. He did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.

and Jehovah giveth also it into the hand of Israel, and its king, and it smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who is in it-it left not in it a remnant; and it doth to its king as it did to the king of Jericho.

Yahweh delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel. He took it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with all the souls who were in it, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

And Jehovah giveth Lachish into the hand of Israel, and it captureth it on the second day, and smiteth it by the mouth of the sword, and every person who is in it, according to all that it did to Libnah.

Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them, and chased them to great Sidon, and to Misrephoth Maim, and to the valley of Mizpah eastward. They struck them until they left them no one remaining.

and Jehovah giveth them into the hand of Israel, and they smite them and pursue them unto the great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-Maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward, and they smite them, till he hath not left to them a remnant;

by the lot of their inheritance, as Yahweh commanded by Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half-tribe.

If the avenger of blood pursues him, then they shall not deliver up the man slayer into his hand; because he struck his neighbor unintentionally, and didn’t hate him before.

‘And when the redeemer of blood doth pursue after him, then they do not shut up the man-slayer into his hand, for without knowledge he hath smitten his neighbour, and is not hating him hitherto;

These were the appointed cities for all the children of Israel, and for the alien who lives among them, that whoever kills any person unintentionally might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stands trial before the congregation.

These have been cities of meeting for all the sons of Israel, and for a sojourner who is sojourning in their midst, for the fleeing thither of any one smiting life inadvertently, and he doth not die by the hand of the redeemer of blood till his standing before the company.

They spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, “Yahweh commanded through Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with their pasture lands for our livestock.”

and they speak unto them in Shiloh, in the land of Canaan, saying, ‘Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses to give to us cities to dwell in, and their suburbs for our cattle.’

The children of Israel gave these cities with their pasture lands by lot to the Levites, as Yahweh commanded by Moses.

And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 gave H5414 (QalImpf) by lot H1486 unto the Levites H3881 these cities H5892 with their suburbs, H4054 as the Lord H3068 commanded H6680 (PielPerf) by the hand H3027 of Moses. H4872

And the sons of Israel give to the Levites these cities and their suburbs, as Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses, by lot.

Yahweh gave them rest all around, according to all that he swore to their fathers. Not a man of all their enemies stood before them. Yahweh delivered all their enemies into their hand.

The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, which they owned, according to the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.

And the children H1121 of Reuben H7205 and the children H1121 of Gad H1410 and the half H2677 tribe H7626 of Manasseh H4519 returned, H7725 (QalImpf) and departed H3212 (QalImpf) from the children H1121 of Israel H3478 out of Shiloh, H7887 which [is] in the land H776 of Canaan, H3667 to go H3212 (QalInf) unto the country H776 of Gilead, H1568 to the land H776 of their possession, H272 whereof they were possessed, H270 (NiphPerf) according to the word H6310 of the Lord H3068 by the hand H3027 of Moses. And the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh, turn back and go from the sons of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the land of Gilead, unto the land of their possession, in which they have possession, according to the command of Jehovah, by the hand of Moses;

Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, “Today we know that Yahweh is among us, because you have not committed this trespass against Yahweh. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of Yahweh’s hand.”

And Phinehas H6372 the son H1121 of Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the children H1121 of Reuben, H7205 and to the children H1121 of Gad, H1410 and to the children H1121 of Manasseh, H4519 This day H3117 we perceive H3045 (QalPerf) that the Lord H3068 [is] among H8432 us, because ye have not committed H4603 (QalPerf) this trespass H4604 against the Lord: H3068 now H227 ye have delivered H5337 (HiphPerf) the children H1121 of Israel H3478 out of the hand H3027 of the Lord. And Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest saith unto the sons of Reuben, and unto the sons of Gad, and unto the sons of Manasseh, ‘To-day we have known that Jehovah is in our midst, because ye have not committed against Jehovah this trespass-then ye have delivered the sons of Israel out of the hand of Jehovah.’

“ ‘I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that lived beyond the Jordan. They fought with you, and I gave them into your hand. You possessed their land, and I destroyed them from before you.

‘And I bring you in unto the land of the Amorite who is dwelling beyond the Jordan, and they fight with you, and I give them into your hand, and ye possess their land, and I destroy them out of your presence.

but I would not listen to Balaam; therefore he blessed you still. So I delivered you out of his hand.

But I would H14 (QalPerf) not hearken H8085 (QalInf) unto Balaam; H1109 therefore he blessed H1288 (PielImpf) you still: H1288 (QalInf) so I delivered H5337 (HiphImpf) you out of his hand. H3027

and I have not been willing to hearken to Balaam, and he doth greatly bless you, and I deliver you out of his hand.

“ ‘You went over the Jordan, and came to Jericho. The men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.

‘And ye pass over the Jordan, and come in unto Jericho, and fight against you do the possessors of Jericho-the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite-and I give them into your hand.

Yahweh said, “Judah shall go up. Behold,^§ I have delivered the land into his hand.”

Judges 1:2 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

And the Lord H3068 said, H559 (QalImpf) Judah H3063 shall go up: H5927 (QalImpf) behold, I have delivered H5414 (QalPerf) the land H776 into his hand. H3027

And Jehovah saith, ‘Judah doth go up; lo, I have given the land into his hand.’

Judah went up, and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand. They struck ten thousand men in Bezek.

And Judah H3063 went up; H5927 (QalImpf) and the Lord H3068 delivered H5414 (QalImpf) the Canaanites H3669 and the Perizzites H6522 into their hand: H3027 and they slew H5221 (HiphImpf) of them in Bezek H966 ten H6235 thousand H505 men. H376

And Judah goeth up, and Jehovah giveth the Canaanite and the Perizzite into their hand, and they smite them in Bezek-ten thousand men;

But Adoni-Bezek fled. They pursued him, caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.

But Adonibezek H137 fled; H5127 (QalImpf) and they pursued H7291 (QalImpf) after H310 him, and caught H270 (QalImpf) him, and cut off H7112 (PielImpf) his thumbs H931 H3027 and his great toes. H7272

And Adoni-Bezek fleeth, and they pursue after him, and seize him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes,

Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their big toes cut off, scavenged under my table. As I have done, so God^§ has done to me.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

Judges 1:7 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).

and Adoni-Bezek saith, ‘Seventy kings-their thumbs and their great toes cut off-have been gathering under my table; as I have done so hath God repaid to me;’ and they bring him in to Jerusalem, and he dieth there.

but the Amorites would dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim. Yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labor.

But the Amorites H567 would H2974 (HiphImpf) dwell H3427 (QalInf) in mount H2022 Heres H2776 in Aijalon, H357 and in Shaalbim: H8169 yet the hand H3027 of the house H1004 of Joseph H3130 prevailed, H3513 (QalImpf) so that they became tributaries. H4522

and the Amorite is desirous to dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, and the hand of the house of Joseph is heavy, and they become tributary;

Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.

And the anger H639 of the Lord H3068 was hot H2734 (QalImpf) against Israel, H3478 and he delivered H5414 (QalImpf) them into the hands H3027 of spoilers H8154 (QalActPtc) that spoiled H8155 (QalImpf) them, and he sold H4376 (QalImpf) them into the hands H3027 of their enemies H341 (QalActPtc) round about, H5439 so that they could H3201 (QalPerf) not any longer H5750 stand H5975 (QalInf) before H6440 their enemies. And the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel, and He giveth them into the hand of spoilers, and they spoil them, and He selleth them into the hand of their enemies round about, and they have not been able any more to stand before their enemies;

Wherever they went out, Yahweh’s hand was against them for evil, as Yahweh had spoken, and as Yahweh had sworn to them; and they were very distressed.

Whithersoever they went out, H3318 (QalPerf) the hand H3027 of the Lord H3068 was against them for evil, H7451 as the Lord H3068 had said, H1696 (PielPerf) and as the Lord H3068 had sworn H7650 (NiphPerf) unto them: and they were greatly H3966 distressed. H3334 (QalImpf)

in every place where they have gone out, the hand of Jehovah hath been against them for evil, as Jehovah hath spoken, and as Jehovah hath sworn to them, and they are distressed-greatly.

Yahweh raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them.

Nevertheless the Lord H3068 raised up H6965 (HiphImpf) judges, H8199 (QalActPtc) which delivered H3467 (HiphImpf) them out of the hand H3027 of those that spoiled H8154 (QalActPtc) them.

And Jehovah raiseth up judges, and they save them from the hand of their spoilers;

When Yahweh raised up judges for them, then Yahweh was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it grieved Yahweh because of their groaning by reason of those who oppressed them and troubled them.

And when the Lord H3068 raised H6965 (HiphPerf) them up judges, H8199 (QalActPtc) then the Lord H3068 was with the judge, H8199 (QalActPtc) and delivered H3467 (HiphPerf) them out of the hand H3027 of their enemies H341 (QalActPtc) all the days H3117 of the judge: H8199 (QalActPtc) for it repented H5162 (NiphImpf) the Lord H3068 because H6440 of their groanings H5009 by reason of them that oppressed H3905 (QalPtc) them and vexed H1766 (QalActPtc) them.

And when Jehovah raised up to them judges-then was Jehovah with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it repenteth Jehovah, because of their groaning from the presence of their oppressors, and of those thrusting them away.

So Yahweh left those nations, without driving them out hastily. He didn’t deliver them into Joshua’s hand.

Therefore the Lord H3068 left H3240 (HiphImpf) those nations, H1471 without H1115 driving them out H3423 (HiphInf) hastily; H4118 neither delivered H5414 (QalPerf) he them into the hand H3027 of Joshua. H3091

And Jehovah leaveth these nations, so as not to dispossess them hastily, and did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to Yahweh’s commandments, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

And they were to prove H5254 (PielInf) Israel H3478 by them, to know H3045 (QalInf) whether they would hearken H8085 (QalImpf) unto the commandments H4687 of the Lord, H3068 which he commanded H6680 (PielPerf) their fathers H1 by the hand H3027 of Moses. H4872

and they are to prove Israel by them, to know whether they obey the commands of Jehovah that He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years.

Yahweh’s Spirit came on him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Yahweh delivered Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. His hand prevailed against Cushan Rishathaim.

But when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.

So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Then the land had rest eighty years.

Yahweh sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth of the Gentiles.

and Jehovah selleth them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who hath reigned in Hazor, and the head of his host is Sisera, and he is dwelling in Harosheth of the Goyim;

I will draw to you, to the river Kishon, Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into your hand.’ ”

Deborah said to Barak, “Go; for this is the day in which Yahweh has delivered Sisera into your hand. Hasn’t Yahweh gone out before you?” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.

And Deborah saith unto Barak, ‘Rise, for this is the day in which Jehovah hath given Sisera into thy hand; hath not Jehovah gone out before thee?’ And Barak goeth down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.

Then Jael, Heber’s wife, took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him, and struck the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground, for he was in a deep sleep; so he fainted and died.

And Jael wife of Heber taketh the pin of the tent, and taketh the hammer in her hand, and goeth unto him gently, and striketh the pin into his temples, and it fasteneth in the earth-and he hath been fast asleep, and is weary-and he dieth.

The hand of the children of Israel prevailed more and more against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

And the hand H3027 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 prospered, H3212 (QalImpf) H1980 (QalInf) and prevailed H7186 against Jabin H2985 the king H4428 of Canaan, H3667 until they had destroyed H3772 (HiphPerf) Jabin H2985 king H4428 of Canaan. H3667

and the hand of the sons of Israel goeth, going on and becoming hard on Jabin king of Canaan, till that they have cut off Jabin king of Canaan.
