Now, therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son. But according to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me, and to the land in which you have lived as a foreigner.”

Abraham said, “I will swear.”

Therefore he called that place Beersheba,° because they both swore an oath there.

Genesis 21:31 Beersheba can mean “well of the oath” or “well of seven”.

I will make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.

Yahweh, the God of heaven—who took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, ‘I will give this land to your offspring—he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” He swore to him. He sold his birthright to Jacob.

Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.”

Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the children of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones away from here with you.”

Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’

“ ‘Or if anyone swears rashly with his lips to do evil or to do good—whatever it is that a man might utter rashly with an oath, and it is hidden from him—when he knows of it, then he will be guilty of one of these.

“ ‘You shall not swear by my name falsely, and profane the name of your God. I am Yahweh.

The priest shall cause her to take an oath and shall tell the woman, “If no man has lain with you, and if you haven’t gone aside to uncleanness, being under your husband’s authority, be free from this water of bitterness that brings a curse.

Have I conceived all this people? Have I brought them out, that you should tell me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which you swore to their fathers’?

μη εγω εν γαστρι ελαβον παντα τον λαον τουτον η εγω ετεκον αυτους οτι λεγεις μοι λαβε αυτον εις τον κολπον σου ωσει αραι τιθηνος τον θηλαζοντα εις την γην ην ωμοσας τοις πατρασιν αυτων

‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’

surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it.

When a man vows a vow to Yahweh, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

Behold,^§ I have set the land before you. Go in and possess the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers—to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob—to give to them and to their offspring^§ after them.’ ”

Deuteronomy 1:8a “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

ιδετε παραδεδωκα ενωπιον υμων την γην εισπορευθεντες κληρονομησατε την γην ην ωμοσα τοις πατρασιν υμων τω αβρααμ και ισαακ και ιακωβ δουναι αυτοις και τω σπερματι αυτων μετ αυτους

Yahweh heard the voice of your words and was angry, and swore, saying,

And the Lord H3068 heard H8085 (QalImpf) the voice H6963 of your words, H1697 and was wroth, H7107 (QalImpf) and sware, H7650 (NiphImpf) saying, H559 (QalInf)

και ηκουσεν κυριος την φωνην των λογων υμων και παροξυνθεις ωμοσεν λεγων

“Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land which I swore to give to your fathers,

Surely there shall not one H376 of these men H582 of this evil H7451 generation H1755 see H7200 (QalImpf) that good H2896 land, H776 which I sware H7650 (NiphPerf) to give H5414 (QalInf) unto your fathers, H1

ει οψεται τις των ανδρων τουτων την αγαθην ταυτην γην ην ωμοσα τοις πατρασιν αυτων

The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea until we had come over the brook Zered were thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as Yahweh swore to them.

And the space H3117 in which we came H1980 (QalPerf) from Kadeshbarnea, H6947 until we were come over H5674 (QalPerf) the brook H5158 Zered, H2218 [was] thirty H7970 and eight H8083 years; H8141 until all the generation H1755 of the men H582 of war H4421 were wasted out H8552 (QalInf) from among H7130 the host, H4264 as the Lord H3068 sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto them.

και αι ημεραι ας παρεπορευθημεν απο καδης βαρνη εως ου παρηλθομεν την φαραγγα ζαρετ τριακοντα και οκτω ετη εως ου διεπεσεν πασα γενεα ανδρων πολεμιστων αποθνησκοντες εκ της παρεμβολης καθοτι ωμοσεν αυτοις ο θεος

Furthermore Yahweh was angry with me for your sakes, and swore that I should not go over the Jordan, and that I should not go in to that good land which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance;

Furthermore the Lord H3068 was angry H599 (HithPerf) with me for your sakes, H1697 and sware H7650 (NiphImpf) that I should not go over H5674 (QalInf) Jordan, H3383 and that I should not go H935 (QalInf) in unto that good H2896 land, H776 which the Lord H3068 thy God H430 giveth H5414 (QalActPtc) thee [for] an inheritance: H5159

και κυριος εθυμωθη μοι περι των λεγομενων υφ υμων και ωμοσεν ινα μη διαβω τον ιορδανην τουτον και ινα μη εισελθω εις την γην ην κυριος ο θεος διδωσιν σοι εν κληρω

For Yahweh your God is a merciful God. He will not fail you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them.

(For the Lord H3068 thy God H430 [is] a merciful H7349 God; H410) he will not forsake H7503 (HiphImpf) thee, neither destroy H7843 (HiphImpf) thee, nor forget H7911 (QalImpf) the covenant H1285 of thy fathers H1 which he sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto them.

οτι θεος οικτιρμων κυριος ο θεος σου ουκ εγκαταλειψει σε ουδε μη εκτριψει σε ουκ επιλησεται την διαθηκην των πατερων σου ην ωμοσεν αυτοις

It shall be, when Yahweh your God brings you into the land which he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you, great and goodly cities which you didn’t build,

And it shall be, when the Lord H3068 thy God H430 shall have brought H935 (HiphImpf) thee into the land H776 which he sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto thy fathers, H1 to Abraham, H85 to Isaac, H3327 and to Jacob, H3290 to give H5414 (QalInf) thee great H1419 and goodly H2896 cities, H5892 which thou buildedst H1129 (QalPerf) not,

και εσται οταν εισαγαγη σε κυριος ο θεος σου εις την γην ην ωμοσεν τοις πατρασιν σου τω αβρααμ και ισαακ και ιακωβ δουναι σοι πολεις μεγαλας και καλας ας ουκ ωκοδομησας

You shall fear Yahweh your God; and you shall serve him, and shall swear by his name.

Thou shalt fear H3372 (QalImpf) the Lord H3068 thy God, H430 and serve H5647 (QalImpf) him, and shalt swear H7650 (NiphImpf) by his name. H8034

κυριον τον θεον σου φοβηθηση και αυτω λατρευσεις και προς αυτον κολληθηση και τω ονοματι αυτου ομη

You shall do that which is right and good in Yahweh’s sight, that it may be well with you and that you may go in and possess the good land which Yahweh swore to your fathers,

And thou shalt do H6213 (QalPerf) [that which is] right H3477 and good H2896 in the sight H5869 of the Lord: H3068 that it may be well H3190 (QalImpf) with thee, and that thou mayest go in H935 (QalPerf) and possess H3423 (QalPerf) the good H2896 land H776 which the Lord H3068 sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto thy fathers, H1

και ποιησεις το αρεστον και το καλον εναντιον κυριου του θεου υμων ινα ευ σοι γενηται και εισελθης και κληρονομησης την γην την αγαθην ην ωμοσεν κυριος τοις πατρασιν υμων

and he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he swore to our fathers.

And he brought us out H3318 (HiphPerf) from thence, that he might bring us in, H935 (HiphInf) to give H5414 (QalInf) us the land H776 which he sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto our fathers. H1

και ημας εξηγαγεν εκειθεν ινα εισαγαγη ημας δουναι ημιν την γην ταυτην ην ωμοσεν δουναι τοις πατρασιν ημων

but because Yahweh loves you, and because he desires to keep the oath which he swore to your fathers, Yahweh has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

But because the Lord H3068 loved H160 you, and because he would keep H8104 (QalInf) the oath H7621 which he had sworn H7650 (NiphPerf) unto your fathers, H1 hath the Lord H3068 brought you out H3318 (HiphPerf) with a mighty H2389 hand, H3027 and redeemed H6299 (QalImpf) you out of the house H1004 of bondmen, H5650 from the hand H3027 of Pharaoh H6547 king H4428 of Egypt. αλλα παρα το αγαπαν κυριον υμας και διατηρων τον ορκον ον ωμοσεν τοις πατρασιν υμων εξηγαγεν κυριος υμας εν χειρι κραταια και εν βραχιονι υψηλω και ελυτρωσατο εξ οικου δουλειας εκ χειρος φαραω βασιλεως αιγυπτου

It shall happen, because you listen to these ordinances and keep and do them, that Yahweh your God will keep with you the covenant and the loving kindness which he swore to your fathers.

Wherefore it shall come to pass, if H6118 ye hearken H8085 (QalImpf) to these judgments, H4941 and keep, H8104 (QalPerf) and do H6213 (QalPerf) them, that the Lord H3068 thy God H430 shall keep H8104 (QalPerf) unto thee the covenant H1285 and the mercy H2617 which he sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto thy fathers: H1

και εσται ηνικα αν ακουσητε παντα τα δικαιωματα ταυτα και φυλαξητε και ποιησητε αυτα και διαφυλαξει κυριος ο θεος σου σοι την διαθηκην και το ελεος ο ωμοσεν τοις πατρασιν υμων

He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your body and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your livestock and the young of your flock, in the land which he swore to your fathers to give you.

And he will love H157 (QalPerf) thee, and bless H1288 (PielPerf) thee, and multiply H7235 (HiphPerf) thee: he will also bless H1288 (PielPerf) the fruit H6529 of thy womb, H990 and the fruit H6529 of thy land, H127 thy corn, H1715 and thy wine, H8492 and thine oil, H3323 the increase H7698 of thy kine, H504 and the flocks H6251 of thy sheep, H6629 in the land H127 which he sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto thy fathers H1 to give H5414 (QalInf) thee.

και αγαπησει σε και ευλογησει σε και πληθυνει σε και ευλογησει τα εκγονα της κοιλιας σου και τον καρπον της γης σου τον σιτον σου και τον οινον σου και το ελαιον σου τα βουκολια των βοων σου και τα ποιμνια των προβατων σου επι της γης ης ωμοσεν κυριος τοις πατρασιν σου δουναι σοι

You shall observe to do all the commandments which I command you today, that you may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers.

All the commandments H4687 which I command H6680 (PielPtc) thee this day H3117 shall ye observe H8104 (QalImpf) to do, H6213 (QalInf) that ye may live, H2421 (QalImpf) and multiply, H7235 (QalPerf) and go in H935 (QalPerf) and possess H3423 (QalPerf) the land H776 which the Lord H3068 sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto your fathers. H1

πασας τας εντολας ας εγω εντελλομαι υμιν σημερον φυλαξεσθε ποιειν ινα ζητε και πολυπλασιασθητε και εισελθητε και κληρονομησητε την γην ην κυριος ο θεος υμων ωμοσεν τοις πατρασιν υμων

But you shall remember Yahweh your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as it is today.

But thou shalt remember H2142 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 thy God: H430 for [it is] he that giveth H5414 (QalActPtc) thee power H3581 to get H6213 (QalInf) wealth, H2428 that he may establish H6965 (HiphInf) his covenant H1285 which he sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto thy fathers, H1 as [it is] this day. H3117

και μνησθηση κυριου του θεου σου οτι αυτος σοι διδωσιν ισχυν του ποιησαι δυναμιν και ινα στηση την διαθηκην αυτου ην ωμοσεν κυριος τοις πατρασιν σου ως σημερον

Not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart do you go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh your God does drive them out from before you, and that he may establish the word which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

Not for thy righteousness, H6666 or for the uprightness H3476 of thine heart, H3824 dost thou go H935 (QalActPtc) to possess H3423 (QalInf) their land: H776 but for the wickedness H7564 of these nations H1471 the Lord H3068 thy God H430 doth drive them out H3423 (HiphPtc) from before H6440 thee, and that he may perform H6965 (HiphInf) the word H1697 which the Lord H3068 sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto thy fathers, H1 Abraham, H85 Isaac, H3327 and Jacob. H3290

ουχι δια την δικαιοσυνην σου ουδε δια την οσιοτητα της καρδιας σου συ εισπορευη κληρονομησαι την γην αυτων αλλα δια την ασεβειαν των εθνων τουτων κυριος εξολεθρευσει αυτους απο προσωπου σου και ινα στηση την διαθηκην αυτου ην ωμοσεν τοις πατρασιν υμων τω αβρααμ και τω ισαακ και τω ιακωβ
