[1] In those days, the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. Achish said to David, “Know assuredly that you will go out with me in the army, you and your men.” [2] David said to Achish, “Therefore you will know what your servant can do.”Achish said to David, “Therefore I will make you my bodyguard forever.” [3] Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. Saul had sent away those who had familiar spirits and the wizards out of the land. [4] The Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and encamped in Shunem; and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they encamped in Gilboa. [5] When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. [6] When Saul inquired of Yahweh, Yahweh didn’t answer him by dreams, by Urim, or by prophets. [7] Then Saul said to his servants, “Seek for me a woman who has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her and inquire of her.”His servants said to him, “Behold, there is a woman who has a familiar spirit at Endor.” [8] Saul disguised himself and put on other clothing, and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night. Then he said, “Please consult for me by the familiar spirit, and bring me up whomever I shall name to you.” [9] The woman said to him, “Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those who have familiar spirits and the wizards out of the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?” [10] Saul swore to her by Yahweh, saying, “As Yahweh lives, no punishment will happen to you for this thing.” [11] Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up to you?”He said, “Bring Samuel up for me.” [12] When the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!” [13] The king said to her, “Don’t be afraid! What do you see?”The woman said to Saul, “I see a god coming up out of the earth.” [14] He said to her, “What does he look like?”She said, “An old man comes up. He is covered with a robe.” Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground, and showed respect. [15] Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me, to bring me up?”Saul answered, “I am very distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me, and answers me no more, by prophets, or by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do.” [16] Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since Yahweh has departed from you and has become your adversary? [17] Yahweh has done to you as he spoke by me. Yahweh has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, even to David. [18] Because you didn’t obey Yahweh’s voice, and didn’t execute his fierce wrath on Amalek, therefore Yahweh has done this thing to you today. [19] Moreover Yahweh will deliver Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. Yahweh will deliver the army of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines.” [20] Then Saul fell immediately his full length on the earth, and was terrified, because of Samuel’s words. There was no strength in him, for he had eaten no bread all day long or all night long. [21] The woman came to Saul and saw that he was very troubled, and said to him, “Behold, your servant has listened to your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have listened to your words which you spoke to me. [22] Now therefore, please listen also to the voice of your servant, and let me set a morsel of bread before you. Eat, that you may have strength when you go on your way.” [23] But he refused, and said, “I will not eat.” But his servants, together with the woman, constrained him; and he listened to their voice. So he arose from the earth and sat on the bed. [24] The woman had a fattened calf in the house. She hurried and killed it; and she took flour and kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread of it. [25] She brought it before Saul and before his servants, and they ate. Then they rose up and went away that night.

And his servantsH5650 saidH559(QalImpf) to him, Behold, [there is] a womanH802 that hathH1172 a familiar spiritH178 at Endor.H5874 [8] And SaulH7586 disguisedH2664(HithImpf) himself, and put onH3847(QalImpf) otherH312 raiment,H899 and he went,H3212(QalImpf) and twoH8147 menH582 with him, and they cameH935(QalImpf) to the womanH802 by night:H3915 and he said,H559(QalImpf) I pray thee, divineH7080(QalImpv) unto me by the familiar spirit,H178 and bring me [him] up,H5927(HiphImpv) whom I shall nameH559(QalImpf) unto thee. [9] And the womanH802 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Behold, thou knowestH3045(QalPerf) what SaulH7586 hath done,H6213(QalPerf) how he hath cut offH3772(HiphPerf) those that have familiar spirits,H178 and the wizards,H3049 out of the land:H776 wherefore then layest thou a snareH5367(HithPtc) for my life,H5315 to cause me to die?H4191(HiphInf) [10] And SaulH7586 swareH7650(NiphImpf) to her by the Lord,H3068 saying,H559(QalInf) [As] the LordH3068 liveth,H2416 there shallH518 no punishmentH5771 happenH7136(QalImpf) to thee for this thing.H1697 [11] Then saidH559(QalImpf) the woman,H802 Whom shall I bring upH5927(HiphImpf) unto thee? And he said,H559(QalImpf) Bring me upH5927(HiphImpv) Samuel.H8050 [12] And when the womanH802 sawH7200(QalImpf) Samuel,H8050 she criedH2199(QalImpf) with a loudH1419 voice:H6963 and the womanH802 spakeH559(QalImpf) to Saul,H7586 saying,H559(QalInf) Why hast thou deceivedH7411(PielPerf) me? for thou [art] Saul.H7586 [13] And the kingH4428 saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, Be not afraid:H3372(QalImpf) for what sawestH7200(QalPerf) thou? And the womanH802 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Saul,H7586 I sawH7200(QalPerf) godsH430 ascendingH5927(QalActPtc) out of the earth.H776 [14] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, What formH8389 [is] he of? And she said,H559(QalImpf) An oldH2205 manH376 cometh up;H5927(QalActPtc) and he [is] coveredH5844(QalActPtc) with a mantle.H4598 And SaulH7586 perceivedH3045(QalImpf) that it [was] Samuel,H8050 and he stoopedH6915(QalImpf) with [his] faceH639 to the ground,H776 and bowedH7812(HithImpf) himself. [15] And SamuelH8050 saidH559(QalImpf) to Saul,H7586 Why hast thou disquietedH7264(HiphPerf) me, to bring me up?H5927(HiphInf) And SaulH7586 answered,H559(QalImpf) I am soreH3966 distressed;H6887(QalPerf) for the PhilistinesH6430 make warH3898(NiphPtc) against me, and GodH430 is departedH5493(QalPerf) from me, and answerethH6030(QalPerf) me no more, neither byH3027 prophets,H5030 nor by dreams:H2472 therefore I have calledH7121(QalImpf) thee, that thou mayest make knownH3045(HiphInf) unto me what I shall do.H6213(QalImpf) [16] Then saidH559(QalImpf) Samuel,H8050 Wherefore then dost thou askH7592(QalImpf) of me, seeing the LordH3068 is departedH5493(QalPerf) from thee, and is become thine enemy?H6145 [17] And the LordH3068 hath doneH6213(QalImpf) to him, as he spakeH1696(PielPerf) by me:H3027 for the LordH3068 hath rentH7167(QalImpf) the kingdomH4467 out of thine hand,H3027 and givenH5414(QalImpf) it to thy neighbour,H7453 [even] to David:H1732 [18] BecauseH834 thou obeyedstH8085(QalPerf) not the voiceH6963 of the Lord,H3068 nor executedstH6213(QalPerf) his fierceH2740 wrathH639 upon Amalek,H6002 therefore hath the LordH3068 doneH6213(QalPerf) this thingH1697 unto thee this day.H3117 [19] Moreover the LordH3068 will also deliverH5414(QalImpf) IsraelH3478 with thee into the handH3027 of the Philistines:H6430 and to morrowH4279 [shalt] thou and thy sonsH1121 [be] with me: the LordH3068 also shall deliverH5414(QalImpf) the hostH4264 of IsraelH3478 into the handH3027 of the Philistines.H6430 [20] Then SaulH7586 fellH5307(QalImpf) straightwayH4116(PielImpf) allH4393 alongH6967 on the earth,H776 and was soreH3966 afraid,H3372(QalImpf) because of the wordsH1697 of Samuel:H8050 and there was no strengthH3581 in him; for he had eatenH398(QalPerf) no breadH3899 all the day,H3117 nor all the night.H3915 [21] And the womanH802 cameH935(QalImpf) unto Saul,H7586 and sawH7200(QalImpf) that he was soreH3966 troubled,H926(NiphPerf) and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Behold, thine handmaidH8198 hath obeyedH8085(QalPerf) thy voice,H6963 and I have putH7760(QalImpf) my lifeH5315 in my hand,H3709 and have hearkenedH8085(QalImpf) unto thy wordsH1697 which thou spakestH1696(PielPerf) unto me. [22] Now therefore, I pray thee, hearkenH8085(QalImpv) thou also unto the voiceH6963 of thine handmaid,H8198 and let me setH7760(QalImpf) a morselH6595 of breadH3899 beforeH6440 thee; and eat,H398(QalImpv) that thou mayest have strength,H3581 when thou goestH3212(QalImpf) on thy way.H1870 [23] But he refused,H3985(PielImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) I will not eat.H398(QalImpf) But his servants,H5650 together with the woman,H802 compelledH6555(QalImpf) him; and he hearkenedH8085(QalImpf) unto their voice.H6963 So he aroseH6965(QalImpf) from the earth,H776 and satH3427(QalImpf) upon the bed.H4296 [24] And the womanH802 had a fatH4770 calfH5695 in the house;H1004 and she hasted,H4116(PielImpf) and killedH2076(QalImpf) it, and tookH3947(QalImpf) flour,H7058 and kneadedH3888(QalImpf) [it], and did bakeH644(QalImpf) unleavened breadH4682 thereof: [25] And she broughtH5066(HiphImpf) [it] beforeH6440 Saul,H7586 and beforeH6440 his servants;H5650 and they did eat.H398(QalImpf) Then they rose up,H6965(QalImpf) and went awayH3212(QalImpf) that night.H3915
