[1] When David and his men had come to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid on the South and on Ziklag, and had struck Ziklag and burned it with fire, [2] and had taken captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great. They didn’t kill any, but carried them off and went their way. [3] When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters were taken captive. [4] Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voice and wept until they had no more power to weep. [5] David’s two wives were taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. [6] David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the souls of all the people were grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters; but David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God. [7] David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, “Please bring the ephod here to me.”Abiathar brought the ephod to David. [8] David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “If I pursue after this troop, will I overtake them?”He answered him, “Pursue, for you will surely overtake them, and will without fail recover all.” [9] So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those who were left behind stayed. [10] But David pursued, he and four hundred men; for two hundred stayed behind, who were so faint that they couldn’t go over the brook Besor. [11] They found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he ate; and they gave him water to drink. [12] They gave him a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins. When he had eaten, his spirit came again to him; for he had eaten no bread, and drank no water for three days and three nights. [13] David asked him, “To whom do you belong? Where are you from?”He said, “I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days ago I got sick. [14] We made a raid on the South of the Cherethites, and on that which belongs to Judah, and on the South of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.” [15] David said to him, “Will you bring me down to this troop?”He said, “Swear to me by God that you will not kill me and not deliver me up into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this troop.” [16] When he had brought him down, behold, they were spread around over all the ground, eating, drinking, and dancing, because of all the great plunder that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah. [17] David struck them from the twilight even to the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped from there, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled. [18] David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken, and David rescued his two wives. [19] There was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither plunder, nor anything that they had taken. David brought them all back. [20] David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drove before those other livestock, and said, “This is David’s plunder.” [21] David came to the two hundred men, who were so faint that they could not follow David, whom also they had made to stay at the brook Besor; and they went out to meet David, and to meet the people who were with him. When David came near to the people, he greeted them. [22] Then all the wicked men and worthless fellows of those who went with David answered and said, “Because they didn’t go with us, we will not give them anything of the plunder that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that he may lead them away and depart.” [23] Then David said, “Do not do so, my brothers, with that which Yahweh has given to us, who has preserved us, and delivered the troop that came against us into our hand. [24] Who will listen to you in this matter? For as his share is who goes down to the battle, so shall his share be who stays with the baggage. They shall share alike.” [25] It was so from that day forward that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day. [26] When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, “Behold, a present for you from the plunder of Yahweh’s enemies.” [27] He sent it to those who were in Bethel, to those who were in Ramoth of the South, to those who were in Jattir, [28] to those who were in Aroer, to those who were in Siphmoth, to those who were in Eshtemoa, [29] to those who were in Racal, to those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, to those who were in the cities of the Kenites, [30] to those who were in Hormah, to those who were in Borashan, to those who were in Athach, [31] to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men used to stay.

[1] And it came to pass, when DavidH1732 and his menH582 were comeH935(QalInf) to ZiklagH6860 on the thirdH7992 day,H3117 that the AmalekitesH6003 had invadedH6584(QalPerf) the south,H5045 and Ziklag,H6860 and smittenH5221(HiphImpf) Ziklag,H6860 and burnedH8313(QalImpf) it with fire;H784 [2] And had taken the womenH802 captives,H7617(QalImpf) that [were] therein: they slewH4191(HiphPerf) not any,H376 either greatH1419 or small,H6996 but carried [them] away,H5090(QalImpf) and wentH3212(QalImpf) on their way.H1870 [3] So DavidH1732 and his menH582 cameH935(QalImpf) to the city,H5892 and, behold, [it was] burnedH8313(QalPasPtc) with fire;H784 and their wives,H802 and their sons,H1121 and their daughters,H1323 were taken captives.H7617(NiphPerf) [4] Then DavidH1732 and the peopleH5971 that [were] with him lifted upH5375(QalImpf) their voiceH6963 and wept,H1058(QalImpf) until they had no more powerH3581 to weep.H1058(QalInf) [5] And David’sH1732 twoH8147 wivesH802 were taken captives,H7617(NiphPerf) AhinoamH293 the Jezreelitess,H3159 and AbigailH26 the wifeH802 of NabalH5037 the Carmelite.H3761 [6] And DavidH1732 was greatlyH3966 distressed;H3334(QalImpf) for the peopleH5971 spakeH559(QalPerf) of stoningH5619(QalInf) him, because the soulH5315 of all the peopleH5971 was grieved,H4843(QalPerf) every manH376 for his sonsH1121 and for his daughters:H1323 but DavidH1732 encouragedH2388(HithImpf) himself in the LordH3068 his God.H430 [7] And DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) to AbiatharH54 the priest,H3548 Ahimelech’sH288 son,H1121 I pray thee, bring me hitherH5066(HiphImpv) the ephod.H646 And AbiatharH54 broughtH5066(HiphImpf) thither the ephodH646 to David.H1732 [8] And DavidH1732 enquiredH7592(QalImpf) at the Lord,H3068 saying,H559(QalInf) Shall I pursueH7291(QalImpf) afterH310 this troop?H1416 shall I overtakeH5381(HiphImpf) them? And he answeredH559(QalImpf) him, Pursue:H7291(QalImpv) for thou shalt surelyH5381(HiphInf) overtakeH5381(HiphImpf) [them], and without failH5337(HiphInf) recoverH5337(HiphImpf) [all]. [9] So DavidH1732 went,H3212(QalImpf) he and the sixH8337 hundredH3967 menH376 that [were] with him, and cameH935(QalImpf) to the brookH5158 Besor,H1308 where those that were left behindH3498(NiphPtc) stayed.H5975(QalPerf) [10] But DavidH1732 pursued,H7291(QalImpf) he and fourH702 hundredH3967 men:H376 for two hundredH3967 abode behind,H5975(QalImpf) which were so faintH6296(PielPerf) that they could not go overH5674(QalInf) the brookH5158 Besor.H1308 [11] And they foundH4672(QalImpf) an EgyptianH376 in the field,H7704 and broughtH3947(QalImpf) him to David,H1732 and gaveH5414(QalImpf) him bread,H3899 and he did eat;H398(QalImpf) and they made him drinkH8248(HiphImpf) water;H4325 [12] And they gaveH5414(QalImpf) him a pieceH6400 of a cakeH1690 of figs, and twoH8147 clusters of raisins:H6778 and when he had eaten,H398(QalImpf) his spiritH7307 came againH7725(QalImpf) to him: for he had eatenH398(QalPerf) no bread,H3899 nor drunkH8354(QalPerf) [any] water,H4325 threeH7969 daysH3117 and threeH7969 nights.H3915 [13] And DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, To whom [belongest] thou? and whence [art] thou? And he said,H559(QalImpf) I [am] a young manH5288 of Egypt,H4713 servantH5650 to an Amalekite;H376 and my masterH113 leftH5800(QalImpf) me, because threeH7969 daysH3117 agone I fell sick.H2470(QalPerf) [14] We made an invasionH6584(QalPerf) [upon] the southH5045 of the Cherethites,H3774 and upon [the coast] which [belongeth] to Judah,H3063 and upon the southH5045 of Caleb;H3612 and we burnedH8313(QalPerf) ZiklagH6860 with fire.H784 [15] And DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) to him, Canst thou bring me downH3381(HiphImpf) to this company?H1416 And he said,H559(QalImpf) SwearH7650(NiphImpv) unto me by God,H430 that thou wilt neither killH4191(HiphImpf) me, norH518 deliverH5462(HiphImpf) me into the handsH3027 of my master,H113 and I will bring thee downH3381(HiphImpf) to this company.H1416 [16] And when he had brought him down,H3381(HiphImpf) behold, [they were] spread abroadH5203(QalPasPtc) upon allH6440 the earth,H776 eatingH398(QalActPtc) and drinking,H8354(QalActPtc) and dancing,H2287(QalActPtc) because of all the greatH1419 spoilH7998 that they had takenH3947(QalPerf) out of the landH776 of the Philistines,H6430 and out of the landH776 of Judah.H3063 [17] And DavidH1732 smoteH5221(HiphImpf) them from the twilightH5399 even unto the eveningH6153 of the next day:H4283 and there escapedH4422(NiphPerf) not a manH376 of them, save fourH702 hundredH3967 youngH5288 men,H376 which rodeH7392(QalPerf) upon camels,H1581 and fled.H5127(QalImpf) [18] And DavidH1732 recoveredH5337(HiphImpf) all that the AmalekitesH6002 had carried away:H3947(QalPerf) and DavidH1732 rescuedH5337(HiphPerf) his twoH8147 wives.H802 [19] And there was nothing lackingH5737(NiphPerf) to them, neitherH4480 smallH6996 nor great,H1419 neither sonsH1121 nor daughters,H1323 neither spoil,H7998 nor any [thing] that they had takenH3947(QalPerf) to them: DavidH1732 recoveredH7725(HiphPerf) all. [20] And DavidH1732 tookH3947(QalImpf) all the flocksH6629 and the herds,H1241 [which] they draveH5090(QalPerf) beforeH6440 thoseH1931 [other] cattle,H4735 and said,H559(QalImpf) This [is] David’sH1732 spoil.H7998 [21] And DavidH1732 cameH935(QalImpf) to the two hundredH3967 men,H582 which were so faintH6296(PielPerf) that they could not followH3212(QalInf) David,H1732 whom they had made also to abideH3427(HiphImpf) at the brookH5158 Besor:H1308 and they went forthH3318(QalImpf) to meetH7125(QalInf) David,H1732 and to meetH7125(QalInf) the peopleH5971 that [were] with him: and when DavidH1732 came nearH5066(QalImpf) to the people,H5971 he salutedH7592(QalImpf) them. [22] Then answeredH6030(QalImpf) all the wickedH7451 menH376 and [men] of Belial,H1100 of thoseH582 that wentH1980(QalPerf) with David,H1732 and said,H559(QalImpf) Because they wentH1980(QalPerf) not with us, we will not giveH5414(QalImpf) them [ought] of the spoilH7998 that we have recovered,H5337(HiphPerf) save to every manH376 his wifeH802 and his children,H1121 that they may lead [them] away,H5090(QalImpf) and depart.H3212(QalImpf) [23] Then saidH559(QalImpf) David,H1732 Ye shall not do so,H6213(QalImpf) my brethren,H251 with that which the LordH3068 hath givenH5414(QalPerf) us, who hath preservedH8104(QalImpf) us, and deliveredH5414(QalImpf) the companyH1416 that cameH935(QalActPtc) against us into our hand.H3027 [24] For who will hearkenH8085(QalImpf) unto you in this matter?H1697 but as his partH2506 [is] that goeth downH3381(QalActPtc/Qere) to the battle,H4421 so [shall] his partH2506 [be] that tarriethH3427(QalActPtc) by the stuff:H3627 they shall partH2505(QalImpf) alike.H3162 [25] And it was [so] from that dayH3117 forward,H4605 that he madeH7760(QalImpf) it a statuteH2706 and an ordinanceH4941 for IsraelH3478 unto this day.H3117 [26] And when DavidH1732 cameH935(QalImpf) to Ziklag,H6860 he sentH7971(PielImpf) of the spoilH7998 unto the eldersH2205 of Judah,H3063 [even] to his friends,H7453 saying,H559(QalInf) Behold a presentH1293 for you of the spoilH7998 of the enemiesH341(QalActPtc) of the Lord;H3068 [27] To [them]H834 which [were] in Bethel,H1008 and to [them] which [were] in southH5045 Ramoth,H7418 and to [them] which [were] in Jattir,H3492 [28] And to [them] which [were] in Aroer,H6177 and to [them] which [were] in Siphmoth,H8224 and to [them] which [were] in Eshtemoa,H851 [29] And to [them] which [were] in Rachal,H7403 and to [them] which [were] in the citiesH5892 of the Jerahmeelites,H3397 and to [them] which [were] in the citiesH5892 of the Kenites,H7017 [30] And to [them] which [were] in Hormah,H2767 and to [them] which [were] in Chorashan,H3565 and to [them] which [were] in Athach,H6269 [31] And to [them] which [were] in Hebron,H2275 and to all the placesH4725 where DavidH1732 himself and his menH582 were wont to haunt.H1980(HithPerf)
