[1] Hannah prayed, and said,
“My heart exults in Yahweh!
My horn is exalted in Yahweh.
My mouth is enlarged over my enemies,
because I rejoice in your salvation.
[2] There is no one as holy as Yahweh,
for there is no one besides you,
nor is there any rock like our God. [3] “Don’t keep talking so exceedingly proudly.
Don’t let arrogance come out of your mouth,
for Yahweh is a God of knowledge.
By him actions are weighed. [4] “The bows of the mighty men are broken.
Those who stumbled are armed with strength.
[5] Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread.
Those who were hungry are satisfied.
Yes, the barren has borne seven.
She who has many children languishes. [6] “Yahweh kills and makes alive.
He brings down to Sheolⓘ and brings up.
[7] Yahweh makes poor and makes rich.
He brings low, he also lifts up.
[8] He raises up the poor out of the dust.
He lifts up the needy from the dunghill
to make them sit with princes
and inherit the throne of glory.
For the pillars of the earth are Yahweh’s.
He has set the world on them.
[9] He will keep the feet of his holy ones,
but the wicked will be put to silence in darkness;
for no man will prevail by strength.
[10] Those who strive with Yahweh shall be broken to pieces.
He will thunder against them in the sky.“Yahweh will judge the ends of the earth.
He will give strength to his king,
and exalt the horn of his anointed.” [11] Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. The child served Yahweh before Eli the priest. [12] Now the sons of Eli were wicked men. They didn’t know Yahweh. [13] The custom of the priests with the people was that when anyone offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant came while the meat was boiling, with a fork of three teeth in his hand; [14] and he stabbed it into the pan, or kettle, or cauldron, or pot. The priest took all that the fork brought up for himself. They did this to all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh. [15] Yes, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat to roast for the priest; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw.” [16] If the man said to him, “Let the fat be burned first, and then take as much as your soul desires;” then he would say, “No, but you shall give it to me now; and if not, I will take it by force.” [17] The sin of the young men was very great before Yahweh; for the men despised Yahweh’s offering. [18] But Samuel ministered before Yahweh, being a child, clothed with a linen ephod. [19] Moreover his mother made him a little robe, and brought it to him from year to year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. [20] Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, “May Yahweh give you offspring§ from this woman for the petition which was asked of Yahweh.” Then they went to their own home. [21] Yahweh visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. The child Samuel grew before Yahweh. [22] Now Eli was very old; and he heard all that his sons did to all Israel, and how that they slept with the women who served at the door of the Tent of Meeting. [23] He said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people. [24] No, my sons; for it is not a good report that I hear! You make Yahweh’s people disobey. [25] If one man sins against another, God will judge him; but if a man sins against Yahweh, who will intercede for him?” Notwithstanding, they didn’t listen to the voice of their father, because Yahweh intended to kill them. [26] The child Samuel grew on, and increased in favor both with Yahweh and also with men. [27] A man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Did I reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in bondage to Pharaoh’s house? [28] Didn’t I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? Didn’t I give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire? [29] Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I have commanded in my habitation, and honor your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?’ [30] “Therefore Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father should walk before me forever.’ But now Yahweh says, ‘Far be it from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me will be cursed. [31] Behold,§ the days come that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, that there will not be an old man in your house. [32] You will see the affliction of my habitation, in all the wealth which I will give Israel. There shall not be an old man in your house forever. [33] The man of yours whom I don’t cut off from my altar will consume your eyes§ and grieve your heart. All the increase of your house will die in the flower of their age. [34] This will be the sign to you that will come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they will both die. [35] I will raise up a faithful priest for myself who will do according to that which is in my heart and in my mind. I will build him a sure house. He will walk before my anointed forever. [36] It will happen that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and will say, “Please put me into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread.” ’ ”

[1] And HannahH2584 prayed,H6419(HithImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) My heartH3820 rejoicethH5970(QalPerf) in the Lord,H3068 mine hornH7161 is exaltedH7311(QalPerf) in the Lord:H3068 my mouthH6310 is enlargedH7337(QalPerf) over mine enemies;H341(QalActPtc) because I rejoiceH8055(QalPerf) in thy salvation.H3444 [2] [There is] none holyH6918 as the Lord:H3068 for [there is] none besideH1115 thee: neither [is there] any rockH6697 like our God.H430 [3] TalkH1696(PielImpf) no moreH7235(HiphImpf) so exceedingH1364 proudly;H1364 let [not] arrogancyH6277 comeH3318(QalImpf) out of your mouth:H6310 for the LordH3068 [is] a GodH410 of knowledge,H1844 and by him actionsH5949 are weighed.H8505(NiphPerf) [4] The bowsH7198 of the mighty menH1368 [are] broken,H2844 and they that stumbledH3782(NiphPtc) are girdedH247(QalPerf) with strength.H2428 [5] [They that were] fullH7649 have hired outH7936(NiphPerf) themselves for bread;H3899 and [they that were] hungryH7457 ceased:H2308(QalPerf) so that the barrenH6135 hath bornH3205(QalPerf) seven;H7651 and she that hath manyH7227 childrenH1121 is waxed feeble.H535(PulaPerf) [6] The LordH3068 killeth,H4191(HiphPtc) and maketh alive:H2421(PielPtc) he bringeth downH3381(HiphPtc) to the grave,H7585 and bringeth up.H5927(HiphImpf) [7] The LordH3068 maketh poor,H3423(HiphPtc) and maketh rich:H6238(HiphPtc) he bringeth low,H8213(HiphPtc) andH637 lifteth up.H7311(PolePtc) [8] He raiseth upH6965(HiphPtc) the poorH1800 out of the dust,H6083 [and] lifteth upH7311(HiphImpf) the beggarH34 from the dunghill,H830 to setH3427(HiphInf) [them] among princes,H5081 and to make them inheritH5157(HiphImpf) the throneH3678 of glory:H3519 for the pillarsH4690 of the earthH776 [are] the Lord’s,H3068 and he hath setH7896(QalImpf) the worldH8398 upon them. [9] He will keepH8104(QalImpf) the feetH7272 of his saints,H2623 and the wickedH7563 shall be silentH1826(NiphImpf) in darkness;H2822 for by strengthH3581 shall no manH376 prevail.H1396(QalImpf) [10] The adversariesH7378(HiphPtc) of the LordH3068 shall be broken to pieces;H2865(NiphImpf) out of heavenH8064 shall he thunderH7481(HiphImpf) upon them: the LordH3068 shall judgeH1777(QalImpf) the endsH657 of the earth;H776 and he shall giveH5414(QalImpf) strengthH5797 unto his king,H4428 and exaltH7311(HiphImpf) the hornH7161 of his anointed.H4899 [11] And ElkanahH511 wentH3212(QalImpf) to RamahH7414 to his house.H1004 And the childH5288 didH1961(QalPerf) ministerH8334(PielPtc) unto the LordH3068 beforeH6440 EliH5941 the priest.H3548 [12] Now the sonsH1121 of EliH5941 [were] sonsH1121 of Belial;H1100 they knewH3045(QalPerf) not the Lord.H3068 [13] And the priests’H3548 customH4941 with the peopleH5971 [was, that], when any manH376 offeredH2076(QalActPtc) sacrifice,H2077 the priest’sH3548 servantH5288 came,H935(QalPerf) while the fleshH1320 was in seething,H1310(PielInf) with a fleshhookH4207 of threeH7969 teethH8127 in his hand;H3027 [14] And he struckH5221(HiphPerf) [it] into the pan,H3595 or kettle,H1731 or caldron,H7037 or pot;H6517 all that the fleshhookH4207 brought upH5927(HiphImpf) the priestH3548 tookH3947(QalImpf) for himself. So they didH6213(QalImpf) in ShilohH7887 unto all the IsraelitesH3478 that cameH935(QalActPtc) thither. [15] Also before they burntH6999(HiphImpf) the fat,H2459 the priest’sH3548 servantH5288 came,H935(QalPerf) and saidH559(QalPerf) to the manH376 that sacrificed,H2076(QalActPtc) GiveH5414(QalImpv) fleshH1320 to roastH6740(QalInf) for the priest;H3548 for he will not haveH3947(QalImpf) soddenH1310(PualPtc) fleshH1320 of thee, but raw.H2416 [16] And [if] any manH376 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Let them not failH6999(HiphImpf) to burnH6999(PielInf) the fatH2459 presently,H3117 and [then] takeH3947(QalImpv) [as much] as thy soulH5315 desireth;H183(PielImpf) then he would answerH559(QalPerf) him, [Nay]; but thou shalt giveH5414(QalImpf) [it me] now: and if not, I will takeH3947(QalPerf) [it] by force.H2394 [17] Wherefore the sinH2403 of the young menH5288 was veryH3966 greatH1419 beforeH6440 the Lord:H3068 for menH582 abhorredH5006(PielPerf) the offeringH4503 of the Lord.H3068 [18] But SamuelH8050 ministeredH8334(PielPtc) beforeH6440 the Lord,H3068 [being] a child,H5288 girdedH2296(QalPasPtc) with a linenH906 ephod.H646 [19] Moreover his motherH517 madeH6213(QalImpf) him a littleH6996 coat,H4598 and broughtH5927(HiphPerf) [it] to him from yearH3117 to year,H3117 when she came upH5927(QalInf) with her husbandH376 to offerH2076(QalInf) the yearlyH3117 sacrifice.H2077 [20] And EliH5941 blessedH1288(PielPerf) ElkanahH511 and his wife,H802 and said,H559(QalPerf) The LordH3068 giveH7760(QalImpf) thee seedH2233 of this womanH802 for the loanH7596 which is lentH7592(QalPerf) to the Lord.H3068 And they wentH1980(QalPerf) unto their own home.H4725 [21] AndH3588 the LordH3068 visitedH6485(QalPerf) Hannah,H2584 so that she conceived,H2029(QalImpf) and bareH3205(QalImpf) threeH7969 sonsH1121 and twoH8147 daughters.H1323 And the childH5288 SamuelH8050 grewH1431(QalImpf) beforeH5973 the Lord.H3068 [22] Now EliH5941 was veryH3966 old,H2204(QalPerf) and heardH8085(QalPerf) all that his sonsH1121 didH6213(QalImpf) unto all Israel;H3478 and how they layH7901(QalImpf) with the womenH802 that assembledH6633(QalActPtc) [at] the doorH6607 of the tabernacleH168 of the congregation.H4150 [23] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Why doH6213(QalImpf) ye such things?H1697 for I hearH8085(QalActPtc) of your evilH7451 dealingsH1697 by all this people.H5971 [24] Nay, my sons;H1121 for [it is] no goodH2896 reportH8052 that I hear:H8085(QalActPtc) ye make the Lord’sH3068 peopleH5971 to transgress.H5674(HiphPtc) [25] If one manH376 sinH2398(QalImpf) against another,H376 the judgeH430 shall judgeH6419(PielPerf) him: but if a manH376 sinH2398(QalImpf) against the Lord,H3068 who shall intreatH6419(HithImpf) for him? Notwithstanding they hearkenedH8085(QalImpf) not unto the voiceH6963 of their father,H1 because the LordH3068 wouldH2654(QalPerf) slayH4191(HiphInf) them. [26] And the childH5288 SamuelH8050 grewH1432 on,H1980(QalActPtc) and was in favourH2896 both with the Lord,H3068 and also with men.H582 [27] And there cameH935(QalImpf) a manH376 of GodH430 unto Eli,H5941 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 Did I plainlyH1540(NiphInf) appearH1540(NiphPerf) unto the houseH1004 of thy father,H1 when they were in EgyptH4714 in Pharaoh’sH6547 house?H1004 [28] And did I chooseH977(QalInf) him out of all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 [to be] my priest,H3548 to offerH5927(QalInf) upon mine altar,H4196 to burnH6999(HiphInf) incense,H7004 to wearH5375(QalInf) an ephodH646 beforeH6440 me? and did I giveH5414(QalImpf) unto the houseH1004 of thy fatherH1 all the offerings made by fireH801 of the childrenH1121 of Israel?H3478 [29] Wherefore kickH1163(QalImpf) ye at my sacrificeH2077 and at mine offering,H4503 which I have commandedH6680(PielPerf) [in my] habitation;H4583 and honourestH3513(PielImpf) thy sonsH1121 above me, to make yourselves fatH1254(HiphInf) with the chiefestH7225 of all the offeringsH4503 of IsraelH3478 my people?H5971 [30] Wherefore the LordH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 saith,H5002(QalPasPtc) I saidH559(QalPerf) indeedH559(QalInf) [that] thy house,H1004 and the houseH1004 of thy father,H1 should walkH1980(HithImpf) beforeH6440 me forH5704 ever:H5769 but now the LordH3068 saith,H5002(QalPasPtc) Be it far from me;H2486 for them that honourH3513(PielPtc) me I will honour,H3513(PielImpf) and they that despiseH959(QalActPtc) me shall be lightly esteemed.H7043(QalImpf) [31] Behold, the daysH3117 come,H935(QalActPtc) that I will cut offH1438(QalPerf) thine arm,H2220 and the armH2220 of thy father’sH1 house,H1004 that there shall not be an old manH2205 in thine house.H1004 [32] And thou shalt seeH5027(HiphPerf) an enemyH6862 [in my] habitation,H4583 in all [the wealth] which [God] shall giveH3190(HiphImpf) Israel:H3478 and there shall not be an old manH2205 in thine houseH1004 for ever.H3117 [33] And the manH376 of thine, [whom] I shall not cut offH3772(HiphImpf) from mine altar,H4196 [shall be] to consumeH3615(PielInf) thine eyes,H5869 and to grieveH109 thine heart:H5315 and all the increaseH4768 of thine houseH1004 shall dieH4191(QalImpf) in the flower of their age.H582 [34] And this [shall be] a signH226 unto thee, that shall comeH935(QalImpf) upon thy twoH8147 sons,H1121 on HophniH2652 and Phinehas;H6372 in oneH259 dayH3117 they shall dieH4191(QalImpf) bothH8147 of them. [35] And I will raise me upH6965(HiphPerf) a faithfulH539(NiphPtc) priest,H3548 [that] shall doH6213(QalImpf) according to [that] which [is] in mine heartH3824 and in my mind:H5315 and I will buildH1129(QalPerf) him a sureH539(NiphPtc) house;H1004 and he shall walkH1980(HithPerf) beforeH6440 mine anointedH4899 for ever.H3117 [36] And it shall come to pass, [that] every one that is leftH3498(NiphPtc) in thine houseH1004 shall comeH935(QalImpf) [and] crouchH7812(HithInf) to him for a pieceH95 of silverH3701 and a morselH3603 of bread,H3899 and shall say,H559(QalPerf) PutH5596(QalImpv) me, I pray thee, into oneH259 of the priests’ offices,H3550 that I may eatH398(QalInf) a pieceH6595 of bread.H3899
