[1] Samuel said to Saul, “Yahweh sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of Yahweh’s words. [2] Yahweh of Armies says, ‘I remember what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way when he came up out of Egypt. [3] Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and don’t spare them; but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ” [4] Saul summoned the people, and counted them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen and ten thousand men of Judah. [5] Saul came to the city of Amalek, and set an ambush in the valley. [6] Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. [7] Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, which is before Egypt. [8] He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. [9] But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, of the cattle, of the fat calves, of the lambs, and all that was good, and were not willing to utterly destroy them; but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly. [10] Then Yahweh’s word came to Samuel, saying, [11] “It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king, for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.” Samuel was angry; and he cried to Yahweh all night. [12] Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and Samuel was told, saying, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, turned, passed on, and went down to Gilgal.” [13] Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, “You are blessed by Yahweh! I have performed the commandment of Yahweh.” [14] Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?” [15] Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the cattle, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God. We have utterly destroyed the rest.” [16] Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stay, and I will tell you what Yahweh said to me last night.”He said to him, “Say on.” [17] Samuel said, “Though you were little in your own sight, weren’t you made the head of the tribes of Israel? Yahweh anointed you king over Israel; [18] and Yahweh sent you on a journey, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ [19] Why then didn’t you obey Yahweh’s voice, but took the plunder, and did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight?” [20] Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed Yahweh’s voice, and have gone the way which Yahweh sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. [21] But the people took of the plunder, sheep and cattle, the best of the devoted things, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God in Gilgal.” [22] Samuel said, “Has Yahweh as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying Yahweh’s voice? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. [23] For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected Yahweh’s word, he has also rejected you from being king.” [24] Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of Yahweh and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. [25] Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Yahweh.” [26] Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected Yahweh’s word, and Yahweh has rejected you from being king over Israel.” [27] As Samuel turned around to go away, Saul grabbed the skirt of his robe, and it tore. [28] Samuel said to him, “Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you. [29] Also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.” [30] Then he said, “I have sinned; yet please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and come back with me, that I may worship Yahweh your God.” [31] So Samuel went back with Saul; and Saul worshiped Yahweh. [32] Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag the king of the Amalekites here to me!”Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.” [33] Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women!” Then Samuel cut Agag in pieces before Yahweh in Gilgal. [34] Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. [35] Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death, but Samuel mourned for Saul. Yahweh grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.

[1] SamuelH8050 also saidH559(QalImpf) unto Saul,H7586 The LordH3068 sentH7971(QalPerf) me to anointH4886(QalInf) thee [to be] kingH4428 over his people,H5971 over Israel:H3478 now therefore hearkenH8085(QalImpv) thou unto the voiceH6963 of the wordsH1697 of the Lord.H3068 [2] Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 of hosts,H6635 I rememberH6485(QalPerf) [that] which AmalekH6002 didH6213(QalPerf) to Israel,H3478 how he laidH7760(QalPerf) [wait] for him in the way,H1870 when he came upH5927(QalInf) from Egypt.H4714 [3] Now goH3212(QalImpv) and smiteH5221(HiphPerf) Amalek,H6002 and utterly destroyH2763(HiphPerf) all that they have, and spareH2550(QalImpf) them not; but slayH4191(HiphPerf) both manH376 and woman,H802 infantH5768 and suckling,H3243(QalActPtc) oxH7794 and sheep,H7716 camelH1581 and ass.H2543 [4] And SaulH7586 gatheredH8085 the peopleH5971 together,H8085(PielImpf) and numberedH6485(QalImpf) them in Telaim,H2923 two hundredH3967 thousandH505 footmen,H7273 and tenH6235 thousandH505 menH376 of Judah.H3063 [5] And SaulH7586 cameH935(QalImpf) to a cityH5892 of Amalek,H6002 and laid waitH7378(QalImpf) in the valley.H5158 [6] And SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto the Kenites,H7017 Go,H3212(QalImpv) depart,H5493(QalImpv) get you downH3381(QalImpv) from amongH8432 the Amalekites,H6002 lest I destroyH622(QalImpf) you with them: for ye shewedH6213(QalPerf) kindnessH2617 to all the childrenH1121 of Israel,H3478 when they came upH5927(QalInf) out of Egypt.H4714 So the KenitesH7017 departedH5493(QalImpf) from amongH8432 the Amalekites.H6003 [7] And SaulH7586 smoteH5221(HiphImpf) the AmalekitesH6002 from HavilahH2341 [until] thou comestH935(QalInf) to Shur,H7793 that [is] over againstH6440 Egypt.H4714 [8] And he tookH8610(QalImpf) AgagH90 the kingH4428 of the AmalekitesH6002 alive,H2416 and utterly destroyedH2763(HiphPerf) all the peopleH5971 with the edgeH6310 of the sword.H2719 [9] But SaulH7586 and the peopleH5971 sparedH2550(QalImpf) Agag,H90 and the bestH4315 of the sheep,H6629 and of the oxen,H1241 and of the fatlings,H4932 and the lambs,H3733 and all [that was] good,H2896 and wouldH14(QalPerf) not utterly destroyH2763(HiphInf) them: but every thingH4399 [that was] vileH5240 and refuse,H4549(NiphPerf) that they destroyed utterly.H2763(HiphPerf) [10] Then came the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 unto Samuel,H8050 saying,H559(QalInf) [11] It repentethH5162(NiphPerf) me that I have set upH4427(HiphPerf) SaulH7586 [to be] king:H4428 for he is turned backH7725(QalPerf) from followingH310 me, and hath not performedH6965(HiphPerf) my commandments.H1697 And it grievedH2734(QalImpf) Samuel;H8050 and he criedH2199(QalImpf) unto the LordH3068 all night.H3915 [12] And when SamuelH8050 rose earlyH7925(HiphImpf) to meetH7125(QalInf) SaulH7586 in the morning,H1242 it was toldH5046(HophImpf) Samuel,H8050 saying,H559(QalInf) SaulH7586 cameH935(QalPerf) to Carmel,H3760 and, behold, he set him upH5324(HiphPtc) a place,H3027 and is gone about,H5437(NiphImpf) and passed on,H5674(QalImpf) and gone downH3381(QalImpf) to Gilgal.H1537 [13] And SamuelH8050 cameH935(QalImpf) to Saul:H7586 and SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, BlessedH1288(QalPasPtc) [be] thou of the Lord:H3068 I have performedH6965(HiphPerf) the commandmentH1697 of the Lord.H3068 [14] And SamuelH8050 said,H559(QalImpf) What [meaneth] then this bleatingH6963 of the sheepH6629 in mine ears,H241 and the lowingH6963 of the oxenH1241 which I hear?H8085(QalActPtc) [15] And SaulH7586 said,H559(QalImpf) They have broughtH935(HiphPerf) them from the Amalekites:H6003 for the peopleH5971 sparedH2550(QalPerf) the bestH4315 of the sheepH6629 and of the oxen,H1241 to sacrificeH2076(QalInf) unto the LordH3068 thy God;H430 and the restH3498(QalActPtc) we have utterly destroyed.H2763(HiphPerf) [16] Then SamuelH8050 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Saul,H7586 Stay,H7503(HiphImpv) and I will tellH5046(HiphImpf) thee what the LordH3068 hath saidH1696(PielPerf) to me this night.H3915 And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Say on.H1696(PielImpv) [17] And SamuelH8050 said,H559(QalImpf) When thou [wast] littleH6996 in thine own sight,H5869 [wast] thou not [made] the headH7218 of the tribesH7626 of Israel,H3478 and the LordH3068 anointedH4886(QalImpf) thee kingH4428 over Israel?H3478 [18] And the LordH3068 sentH7971(QalImpf) thee on a journey,H1870 and said,H559(QalImpf) GoH3212(QalImpv) and utterly destroyH2763(HiphPerf) the sinnersH2400 the Amalekites,H6002 and fightH3898(NiphPerf) against them until they be consumed.H3615(PielInf) [19] Wherefore then didst thou not obeyH8085(QalPerf) the voiceH6963 of the Lord,H3068 but didst flyH5860(QalImpf) upon the spoil,H7998 and didstH6213(QalImpf) evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the Lord?H3068 [20] And SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Samuel,H8050 Yea, I have obeyedH8085(QalPerf) the voiceH6963 of the Lord,H3068 and have goneH3212(QalImpf) the wayH1870 which the LordH3068 sentH7971(QalPerf) me, and have broughtH935(HiphImpf) AgagH90 the kingH4428 of Amalek,H6002 and have utterly destroyedH2763(HiphPerf) the Amalekites.H6002 [21] But the peopleH5971 tookH3947(QalImpf) of the spoil,H7998 sheepH6629 and oxen,H1241 the chiefH7225 of the things which should have been utterly destroyed,H2764 to sacrificeH2076(QalInf) unto the LordH3068 thy GodH430 in Gilgal.H1537 [22] And SamuelH8050 said,H559(QalImpf) Hath the LordH3068 [as great] delightH2656 in burnt offeringsH5930 and sacrifices,H2077 as in obeyingH8085(QalInf) the voiceH6963 of the Lord?H3068 Behold, to obeyH8085(QalInf) [is] betterH2896 than sacrifice,H2077 [and] to hearkenH7181(HiphInf) than the fatH2459 of rams.H352 [23] For rebellionH4805 [is as] the sinH2403 of witchcraft,H7081 and stubbornnessH6484(HiphInf) [is as] iniquityH205 and idolatry.H8655 Because thou hast rejectedH3988(QalPerf) the wordH1697 of the Lord,H3068 he hath also rejectedH3988(QalImpf) thee from [being] king.H4428 [24] And SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Samuel,H8050 I have sinned:H2398(QalPerf) for I have transgressedH5674(QalPerf) the commandmentH6310 of the Lord,H3068 and thy words:H1697 because I fearedH3372(QalPerf) the people,H5971 and obeyedH8085(QalImpf) their voice.H6963 [25] Now therefore, I pray thee, pardonH5375(QalImpv) my sin,H2403 and turn againH7725(QalImpv) with me, that I may worshipH7812(HithImpf) the Lord.H3068 [26] And SamuelH8050 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Saul,H7586 I will not returnH7725(QalImpf) with thee: for thou hast rejectedH3988(QalPerf) the wordH1697 of the Lord,H3068 and the LordH3068 hath rejectedH3988(QalImpf) thee from being kingH4428 over Israel.H3478 [27] And as SamuelH8050 turned aboutH5437(NiphImpf) to go away,H3212(QalInf) he laid holdH2388(HiphImpf) upon the skirtH3671 of his mantle,H4598 and it rent.H7167(NiphImpf) [28] And SamuelH8050 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, The LordH3068 hath rentH7167(QalPerf) the kingdomH4468 of IsraelH3478 from thee this day,H3117 and hath givenH5414(QalPerf) it to a neighbourH7453 of thine, [that is] betterH2896 than thou. [29] And also the StrengthH5331 of IsraelH3478 will not lieH8266(PielImpf) nor repent:H5162(NiphImpf) for he [is] not a man,H120 that he should repent.H5162(NiphInf) [30] Then he said,H559(QalImpf) I have sinned:H2398(QalPerf) [yet] honourH3513(PielImpv) me now, I pray thee, before the eldersH2205 of my people,H5971 and before Israel,H3478 and turn againH7725(QalImpv) with me, that I may worshipH7812(HithPerf) the LordH3068 thy God.H430 [31] So SamuelH8050 turned againH7725(QalImpf) afterH310 Saul;H7586 and SaulH7586 worshippedH7812(HithImpf) the Lord.H3068 [32] Then saidH559(QalImpf) Samuel,H8050 Bring ye hitherH5066(HiphImpv) to me AgagH90 the kingH4428 of the Amalekites.H6002 And AgagH90 cameH3212(QalImpf) unto him delicately.H4574 And AgagH90 said,H559(QalImpf) SurelyH403 the bitternessH4751 of deathH4194 is past.H5493(QalPerf) [33] And SamuelH8050 said,H559(QalImpf) As thy swordH2719 hath made womenH802 childless,H7921(PielPerf) so shall thy motherH517 be childlessH7921(QalImpf) among women.H802 And SamuelH8050 hewedH8158 AgagH90 in piecesH8158(PielImpf) beforeH6440 the LordH3068 in Gilgal.H1537 [34] Then SamuelH8050 wentH3212(QalImpf) to Ramah;H7414 and SaulH7586 went upH5927(QalPerf) to his houseH1004 to GibeahH1390 of Saul.H7586 [35] And SamuelH8050 came no moreH3254(QalPerf) to seeH7200(QalInf) SaulH7586 until the dayH3117 of his death:H4194 neverthelessH3588 SamuelH8050 mournedH56(HithPerf) for Saul:H7586 and the LordH3068 repentedH5162(NiphPerf) that he had made SaulH7586 kingH4427(HiphPerf) over Israel.H3478
