[1] Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul’s son, greatly delighted in David. [2] Jonathan told David, saying, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Now therefore, please take care of yourself in the morning, live in a secret place, and hide yourself. [3] I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will talk with my father about you; and if I see anything, I will tell you.” [4] Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Don’t let the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you; [5] for he put his life in his hand and struck the Philistine, and Yahweh worked a great victory for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?” [6] Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan; and Saul swore, “As Yahweh lives, he shall not be put to death.” [7] Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before. [8] There was war again. David went out and fought with the Philistines, and killed them with a great slaughter; and they fled before him. [9] An evil spirit from Yahweh was on Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand; and David was playing music with his hand. [10] Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence; and he stuck the spear into the wall. David fled and escaped that night. [11] Saul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and to kill him in the morning. Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying, “If you don’t save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” [12] So Michal let David down through the window. He went away, fled, and escaped. [13] Michal took the teraphimⓘ and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats’ hair at its head and covered it with clothes. [14] When Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.” [15] Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” [16] When the messengers came in, behold, the teraphim was in the bed, with the pillow of goats’ hair at its head. [17] Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me like this and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?”Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go! Why should I kill you?’ ” [18] Now David fled and escaped, and came to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. He and Samuel went and lived in Naioth. [19] Saul was told, saying, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.” [20] Saul sent messengers to seize David; and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, God’s Spirit came on Saul’s messengers, and they also prophesied. [21] When Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied. [22] Then he also went to Ramah, and came to the great well that is in Secu: and he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?”One said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.” [23] He went there to Naioth in Ramah. Then God’s Spirit came on him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah. [24] He also stripped off his clothes. He also prophesied before Samuel and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

[1] And SaulH7586 spakeH1696(PielImpf) to JonathanH3129 his son,H1121 and to all his servants,H5650 that they should killH4191(HiphInf) David.H1732 [2] But JonathanH3083 Saul’sH7586 sonH1121 delightedH2654(QalPerf) muchH3966 in David:H1732 and JonathanH3083 toldH5046(HiphImpf) David,H1732 saying,H559(QalInf) SaulH7586 my fatherH1 seekethH1245(PielPtc) to killH4191(HiphInf) thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heedH8104(NiphImpv) to thyself until the morning,H1242 and abideH3427(QalPerf) in a secretH5643 [place], and hideH2244(NiphPerf) thyself: [3] And I will go outH3318(QalImpf) and standH5975(QalPerf) besideH3027 my fatherH1 in the fieldH7704 where thou [art], and I will communeH1696(PielImpf) with my fatherH1 of thee; and whatH4100 I see,H7200(QalPerf) that I will tellH5046(HiphPerf) thee. [4] And JonathanH3083 spakeH1696(PielImpf) goodH2896 of DavidH1732 unto SaulH7586 his father,H1 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Let not the kingH4428 sinH2398(QalImpf) against his servant,H5650 against David;H1732 because he hath not sinnedH2398(QalPerf) against thee, and because his worksH4639 [have been] to thee-ward veryH3966 good:H2896 [5] For he did putH7760(QalImpf) his lifeH5315 in his hand,H3709 and slewH5221(HiphImpf) the Philistine,H6430 and the LordH3068 wroughtH6213(QalImpf) a greatH1419 salvationH8668 for all Israel:H3478 thou sawestH7200(QalPerf) [it], and didst rejoice:H8055(QalImpf) wherefore then wilt thou sinH2398(QalImpf) against innocentH5355 blood,H1818 to slayH4191(HiphInf) DavidH1732 without a cause?H2600 [6] And SaulH7586 hearkenedH8085(QalImpf) unto the voiceH6963 of Jonathan:H3083 and SaulH7586 sware,H7650(NiphImpf) [As] the LordH3068 liveth,H2416 he shall notH518 be slain.H4191(HophImpf) [7] And JonathanH3083 calledH7121(QalImpf) David,H1732 and JonathanH3083 shewedH5046(HiphImpf) him all those things.H1697 And JonathanH3083 broughtH935(HiphImpf) DavidH1732 to Saul,H7586 and he was in his presence,H6440 as in times past.H865 [8] And there was warH4421 again:H3254(HiphImpf) and DavidH1732 went out,H3318(QalImpf) and foughtH3898(NiphImpf) with the Philistines,H6430 and slewH5221(HiphImpf) them with a greatH1419 slaughter;H4347 and they fledH5127(QalImpf) fromH6440 him. [9] And the evilH7451 spiritH7307 from the LordH3068 was upon Saul,H7586 as he satH3427(QalActPtc) in his houseH1004 with his javelinH2595 in his hand:H3027 and DavidH1732 playedH5059(PielPtc) with [his] hand.H3027 [10] And SaulH7586 soughtH1245(PielImpf) to smiteH5221(HiphInf) DavidH1732 even to the wallH7023 with the javelin;H2595 but he slipped awayH6362(QalImpf) out of Saul’sH7586 presence,H6440 and he smoteH5221(HiphImpf) the javelinH2595 into the wall:H7023 and DavidH1732 fled,H5127(QalPerf) and escapedH4422(NiphImpf) that night.H3915 [11] SaulH7586 also sentH7971(QalImpf) messengersH4397 unto David’sH1732 house,H1004 to watchH8104(QalInf) him, and to slayH4191(HiphInf) him in the morning:H1242 and MichalH4324 David’sH1732 wifeH802 toldH5046(HiphImpf) him, saying,H559(QalInf) If thou saveH4422(PielPtc) not thy lifeH5315 to night,H3915 to morrowH4279 thou shalt be slain.H4191(HophPtc) [12] So MichalH4324 letH3381 DavidH1732 downH3381(HiphImpf) through a window:H2474 and he went,H3212(QalImpf) and fled,H1272(QalImpf) and escaped.H4422(NiphImpf) [13] And MichalH4324 tookH3947(QalImpf) an image,H8655 and laidH7760(QalImpf) [it] in the bed,H4296 and putH7760(QalPerf) a pillowH3523 of goats’H5795 [hair] for his bolster,H4763 and coveredH3680(PielImpf) [it] with a cloth.H899 [14] And when SaulH7586 sentH7971(QalImpf) messengersH4397 to takeH3947(QalInf) David,H1732 she said,H559(QalImpf) He [is] sick.H2470(QalActPtc) [15] And SaulH7586 sentH7971(QalImpf) the messengersH4397 [again] to seeH7200(QalInf) David,H1732 saying,H559(QalInf) Bring him upH5927(HiphImpv) to me in the bed,H4296 that I may slayH4191(HiphInf) him. [16] And when the messengersH4397 were come in,H935(QalImpf) behold, [there was] an imageH8655 in the bed,H4296 with a pillowH3523 of goats’H5795 [hair] for his bolster.H4763 [17] And SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Michal,H4324 Why hast thou deceived me so,H7411(PielPerf) and sent awayH7971(PielImpf) mine enemy,H341(QalActPtc) that he is escaped?H4422(NiphImpf) And MichalH4324 answeredH559(QalImpf) Saul,H7586 He saidH559(QalPerf) unto me, Let me go;H7971(PielImpv) why should I killH4191(HiphImpf) thee? [18] So DavidH1732 fled,H1272(QalPerf) and escaped,H4422(NiphImpf) and cameH935(QalImpf) to SamuelH8050 to Ramah,H7414 and toldH5046(HiphImpf) him all that SaulH7586 had doneH6213(QalPerf) to him. And he and SamuelH8050 wentH3212(QalImpf) and dweltH3427(QalImpf) in Naioth.H5121 [19] And it was toldH5046(HophImpf) Saul,H7586 saying,H559(QalInf) Behold, DavidH1732 [is] at NaiothH5121 in Ramah.H7414 [20] And SaulH7586 sentH7971(QalImpf) messengersH4397 to takeH3947(QalInf) David:H1732 and when they sawH7200(QalImpf) the companyH3862 of the prophetsH5030 prophesying,H5012(NiphPtc) and SamuelH8050 standingH5975(QalActPtc) [as] appointedH5324(NiphPtc) over them, the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 was upon the messengersH4397 of Saul,H7586 and they also prophesied.H5012(HithImpf) [21] And when it was toldH5046(HiphImpf) Saul,H7586 he sentH7971(QalImpf) otherH312 messengers,H4397 and they prophesiedH5012(HithImpf) likewise. [22] Then wentH3212(QalImpf) he also to Ramah,H7414 and cameH935(QalImpf) to a greatH1419 wellH953 that [is] in Sechu:H7906 and he askedH7592(QalImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) WhereH375 [are] SamuelH8050 and David?H1732 And [one] said,H559(QalImpf) Behold, [they be] at NaiothH5121 in Ramah.H7414 [23] And he wentH3212(QalImpf) thither to NaiothH5121 in Ramah:H7414 and the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 was upon him also, and he wentH3212(QalImpf) on,H1980(QalInf) and prophesied,H5012(HithImpf) until he cameH935(QalInf) to NaiothH5121 in Ramah.H7414 [24] And he stripped offH6584(QalImpf) his clothesH899 also,H1571 and prophesiedH5012(HithImpf) beforeH6440 SamuelH8050 in like manner, and lay downH5307(QalImpf) nakedH6174 all that dayH3117 and all that night.H3915 Wherefore they say,H559(QalImpf) [Is] SaulH7586 also among the prophets?H5030
