[1] David therefore departed from there and escaped to Adullam’s cave. When his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. [2] Everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered themselves to him; and he became captain over them. There were with him about four hundred men. [3] David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come out to you, until I know what God will do for me.” [4] He brought them before the king of Moab; and they lived with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. [5] The prophet Gad said to David, “Don’t stay in the stronghold. Depart, and go into the land of Judah.”Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hereth. [6] Saul heard that David was discovered, with the men who were with him. Now Saul was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him. [7] Saul said to his servants who stood around him, “Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give everyone of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds? [8] Is that why all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one who discloses to me when my son makes a treaty with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who is sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as it is today?” [9] Then Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, answered and said, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. [10] He inquired of Yahweh for him, gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.” [11] Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob; and they all came to the king. [12] Saul said, “Hear now, you son of Ahitub.”He answered, “Here I am, my lord.” [13] Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as it is today?” [14] Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, “Who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, captain of your body guard, and honored in your house? [15] Have I today begun to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me! Don’t let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for your servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.” [16] The king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house.” [17] The king said to the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of Yahweh, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled and didn’t disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king wouldn’t put out their hand to fall on the priests of Yahweh. [18] The king said to Doeg, “Turn and attack the priests!”Doeg the Edomite turned, and he attacked the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five people who wore a linen ephod. [19] He struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword—both men and women, children and nursing babies, and cattle, donkeys, and sheep, with the edge of the sword. [20] One of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. [21] Abiathar told David that Saul had slain Yahweh’s priests. [22] David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of all the persons of your father’s house. [23] Stay with me. Don’t be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. You will be safe with me.”

[2] And every oneH376 [that was] in distress,H4689 and every oneH376 that [was] in debt,H5378(QalPtc) and every oneH376 [that was] discontented,H4751 gatheredH6908(HithImpf) themselves unto him; and he became a captainH8269 over them: and there were with him about fourH702 hundredH3967 men.H376 [3] And DavidH1732 wentH3212(QalImpf) thence to MizpehH4708 of Moab:H4124 and he saidH559(QalImpf) unto the kingH4428 of Moab,H4124 Let my fatherH1 and my mother,H517 I pray thee, come forth,H3318(QalImpf) [and be] with you, till I knowH3045(QalImpf) what GodH430 will doH6213(QalImpf) for me. [4] And he broughtH5148(HiphImpf) them beforeH6440 the kingH4428 of Moab:H4124 and they dweltH3427(QalImpf) with him all the whileH3117 that DavidH1732 was in the hold.H4686 [5] And the prophetH5030 GadH1410 saidH559(QalImpf) unto David,H1732 AbideH3427(QalImpf) not in the hold;H4686 depart,H3212(QalImpv) and getH935(QalPerf) thee into the landH776 of Judah.H3063 Then DavidH1732 departed,H3212(QalImpf) and cameH935(QalImpf) into the forestH3293 of Hareth.H2802 [6] When SaulH7586 heardH8085(QalImpf) that DavidH1732 was discovered,H3045(NiphPerf) and the menH582 that [were] with him, (now SaulH7586 abodeH3427(QalActPtc) in GibeahH1390 under a treeH815 in Ramah,H7414 having his spearH2595 in his hand,H3027 and all his servantsH5650 [were] standingH5324(NiphPtc) about him;) [7] Then SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his servantsH5650 that stoodH5324(NiphPtc) about him, Hear now,H8085(QalImpv) ye Benjamites;H1145 will the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 giveH5414(QalImpf) every one of you fieldsH7704 and vineyards,H3754 [and] makeH7760(QalImpf) you all captainsH8269 of thousands,H505 and captainsH8269 of hundreds;H3967 [8] That all of you have conspiredH7194(QalPerf) against me, and [there is] none that shewethH1540(QalActPtc) me that my sonH1121 hath made a leagueH3772(QalInf) with the sonH1121 of Jesse,H3448 and [there is] none of you that is sorryH2470(QalActPtc) for me, or shewethH1540(QalActPtc) unto me that my sonH1121 hath stirred upH6965(HiphPerf) my servantH5650 against me, to lie in wait,H693(QalActPtc) as at this day?H3117 [9] Then answeredH6030(QalImpf) DoegH1673 the Edomite,H130 which was setH5324(NiphPtc) over the servantsH5650 of Saul,H7586 and said,H559(QalImpf) I sawH7200(QalPerf) the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 comingH935(QalActPtc) to Nob,H5011 to AhimelechH288 the sonH1121 of Ahitub.H285 [10] And he enquiredH7592(QalImpf) of the LordH3068 for him, and gaveH5414(QalPerf) him victuals,H6720 and gaveH5414(QalPerf) him the swordH2719 of GoliathH1555 the Philistine.H6430 [11] Then the kingH4428 sentH7971(QalImpf) to callH7121(QalInf) AhimelechH288 the priest,H3548 the sonH1121 of Ahitub,H285 and all his father’sH1 house,H1004 the priestsH3548 that [were] in Nob:H5011 and they cameH935(QalImpf) all of them to the king.H4428 [12] And SaulH7586 said,H559(QalImpf) HearH8085(QalImpv) now, thou sonH1121 of Ahitub.H285 And he answered,H559(QalImpf) Here I [am], my lord.H113 [13] And SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Why have ye conspiredH7194(QalPerf) against me, thou and the sonH1121 of Jesse,H3448 in that thou hast givenH5414(QalInf) him bread,H3899 and a sword,H2719 and hast enquiredH7592(QalInf) of GodH430 for him, that he should riseH6965(QalInf) against me, to lie in wait,H693(QalActPtc) as at this day?H3117 [14] Then AhimelechH288 answeredH6030(QalImpf) the king,H4428 and said,H559(QalImpf) And who [is so] faithfulH539(NiphPtc) among all thy servantsH5650 as David,H1732 which is the king’sH4428 son in law,H2860 and goethH5493(QalPerf) at thy bidding,H4928 and is honourableH3513(NiphPtc) in thine house?H1004 [15] Did I thenH3117 beginH2490(HiphPerf) to enquireH7592(QalInf) of GodH430 for him? be it far from me:H2486 let not the kingH4428 imputeH7760(QalImpf) [any] thingH1697 unto his servant,H5650 [nor] to all the houseH1004 of my father:H1 for thy servantH5650 knewH3045(QalPerf) nothingH1697 of all this, lessH6996 or more.H1419 [16] And the kingH4428 said,H559(QalImpf) Thou shalt surelyH4191(QalInf) die,H4191(QalImpf) Ahimelech,H288 thou, and all thy father’sH1 house.H1004 [17] And the kingH4428 saidH559(QalImpf) unto the footmenH7323(QalPtc) that stoodH5324(NiphPtc) about him, Turn,H5437(QalImpv) and slayH4191(HiphImpv) the priestsH3548 of the Lord;H3068 because their handH3027 also [is] with David,H1732 and because they knewH3045(QalPerf) when he fled,H1272(QalActPtc) and did not shewH1540(QalPerf) it to me. But the servantsH5650 of the kingH4428 wouldH14(QalPerf) not put forthH7971(QalInf) their handH3027 to fallH6293(QalInf) upon the priestsH3548 of the Lord.H3068 [18] And the kingH4428 saidH559(QalImpf) to Doeg,H1673 TurnH5437(QalImpv) thou, and fallH6293(QalImpv) upon the priests.H3548 And DoegH1673 the EdomiteH130 turned,H5437(NiphImpf) and he fellH6293(QalImpf) upon the priests,H3548 and slewH4191(HiphImpf) on that dayH3117 fourscoreH8084 and fiveH2568 personsH376 that did wearH5375(QalActPtc) a linenH906 ephod.H646 [19] And Nob,H5011 the cityH5892 of the priests,H3548 smoteH5221(HiphPerf) he with the edgeH6310 of the sword,H2719 both menH376 and women,H802 childrenH5768 and sucklings,H3243(QalActPtc) and oxen,H7794 and asses,H2543 and sheep,H7716 with the edgeH6310 of the sword.H2719 [20] And oneH259 of the sonsH1121 of AhimelechH288 the sonH1121 of Ahitub,H285 namedH8034 Abiathar,H54 escaped,H4422(NiphImpf) and fledH1272(QalImpf) afterH310 David.H1732 [21] And AbiatharH54 shewedH5046(HiphImpf) DavidH1732 that SaulH7586 had slainH2026(QalPerf) the Lord’sH3068 priests.H3548 [22] And DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Abiathar,H54 I knewH3045(QalPerf) [it] that day,H3117 when DoegH1673 the EdomiteH130 [was] there, that he would surelyH5046(HiphInf) tellH5046(HiphImpf) Saul:H7586 I have occasionedH5437(QalPerf) [the death] of all the personsH5315 of thy father’sH1 house.H1004 [23] AbideH3427(QalImpv) thou with me, fearH3372(QalImpf) not: for he that seekethH1245(PielImpf) my lifeH5315 seekethH1245(PielImpf) thy life:H5315 but with me thou [shalt be] in safeguard.H4931
