[1] The Ziphites came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, “Doesn’t David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert?” [2] Then Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. [3] Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert, by the way. But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness. [4] David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had certainly come. [5] Then David arose and came to the place where Saul had encamped; and David saw the place where Saul lay, with Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army. Saul lay within the place of the wagons, and the people were encamped around him. [6] Then David answered and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, saying, “Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp?”Abishai said, “I will go down with you.” [7] So David and Abishai came to the people by night; and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the place of the wagons, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay around him. [8] Then Abishai said to David, “God has delivered up your enemy into your hand today. Now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time.” [9] David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against Yahweh’s anointed, and be guiltless?” [10] David said, “As Yahweh lives, Yahweh will strike him; or his day shall come to die, or he shall go down into battle and perish. [11] Yahweh forbid that I should stretch out my hand against Yahweh’s anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head and the jar of water, and let’s go.” [12] So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head, and they went away. No man saw it, or knew it, nor did any awake; for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from Yahweh had fallen on them. [13] Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of the mountain far away, a great space being between them; [14] and David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Don’t you answer, Abner?”Then Abner answered, “Who are you who calls to the king?” [15] David said to Abner, “Aren’t you a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy your lord the king. [16] This thing isn’t good that you have done. As Yahweh lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, Yahweh’s anointed. Now see where the king’s spear is, and the jar of water that was at his head.” [17] Saul recognized David’s voice, and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?”David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.” [18] He said, “Why does my lord pursue his servant? For what have I done? What evil is in my hand? [19] Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that Yahweh has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, they are cursed before Yahweh; for they have driven me out today that I shouldn’t cling to Yahweh’s inheritance, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods!’ [20] Now therefore, don’t let my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of Yahweh; for the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains.” [21] Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David; for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes today. Behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.” [22] David answered, “Behold the spear, O king! Let one of the young men come over and get it. [23] Yahweh will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; because Yahweh delivered you into my hand today, and I wouldn’t stretch out my hand against Yahweh’s anointed. [24] Behold, as your life was respected today in my eyes, so let my life be respected in Yahweh’s eyes, and let him deliver me out of all oppression.” [25] Then Saul said to David, “You are blessed, my son David. You will both do mightily, and will surely prevail.”So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.

[1] And the ZiphitesH2130 cameH935(QalImpf) unto SaulH7586 to Gibeah,H1390 saying,H559(QalInf) Doth not DavidH1732 hideH5641(HithPtc) himself in the hillH1389 of Hachilah,H2444 [which is] beforeH6440 Jeshimon?H3452 [2] Then SaulH7586 arose,H6965(QalImpf) and went downH3381(QalImpf) to the wildernessH4057 of Ziph,H2128 having threeH7969 thousandH505 chosenH977(QalPasPtc) menH376 of IsraelH3478 with him, to seekH1245(PielInf) DavidH1732 in the wildernessH4057 of Ziph.H2128 [3] And SaulH7586 pitchedH2583(QalImpf) in the hillH1389 of Hachilah,H2444 which [is] beforeH6440 Jeshimon,H3452 by the way.H1870 But DavidH1732 abodeH3427(QalActPtc) in the wilderness,H4057 and he sawH7200(QalImpf) that SaulH7586 cameH935(QalPerf) afterH310 him into the wilderness.H4057 [4] DavidH1732 therefore sent outH7971(QalImpf) spies,H7270(PielPtc) and understoodH3045(QalImpf) that SaulH7586 was comeH935(QalPerf) in very deed.H3559(NiphPtc) [5] And DavidH1732 arose,H6965(QalImpf) and cameH935(QalImpf) to the placeH4725 where SaulH7586 had pitched:H2583(QalPerf) and DavidH1732 beheldH7200(QalImpf) the placeH4725 where SaulH7586 lay,H7901(QalPerf) and AbnerH74 the sonH1121 of Ner,H5369 the captainH8269 of his host:H6635 and SaulH7586 layH7901(QalActPtc) in the trench,H4570 and the peopleH5971 pitchedH2583(QalActPtc) round aboutH5439 him. [6] Then answeredH6030(QalImpf) DavidH1732 and saidH559(QalImpf) to AhimelechH288 the Hittite,H2850 and to AbishaiH52 the sonH1121 of Zeruiah,H6870 brotherH251 to Joab,H3097 saying,H559(QalInf) Who will go downH3381(QalImpf) with me to SaulH7586 to the camp?H4264 And AbishaiH52 said,H559(QalImpf) I will go downH3381(QalImpf) with thee. [7] So DavidH1732 and AbishaiH52 cameH935(QalImpf) to the peopleH5971 by night:H3915 and, behold, SaulH7586 layH7901(QalActPtc) sleepingH3463 within the trench,H4570 and his spearH2595 stuckH4600(QalPasPtc) in the groundH776 at his bolster:H4763 but AbnerH74 and the peopleH5971 layH7901(QalActPtc) round aboutH5439 him. [8] Then saidH559(QalImpf) AbishaiH52 to David,H1732 GodH430 hath deliveredH5462(PielPerf) thine enemyH341(QalActPtc) into thine handH3027 this day:H3117 now therefore let me smiteH5221(HiphImpf) him, I pray thee, with the spearH2595 even to the earthH776 at once,H6471 and I will not [smite] him the second time.H8138(QalImpf) [9] And DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) to Abishai,H52 DestroyH7843(HiphImpf) him not: for who can stretch forthH7971(QalPerf) his handH3027 against the Lord’sH3068 anointed,H4899 and be guiltless?H5352(NiphPerf) [10] DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) furthermore, [As] the LordH3068 liveth,H2416 the LordH3068 shall smiteH5062(QalImpf) him; or his dayH3117 shall comeH935(QalImpf) to die;H4191(QalPerf) or he shall descendH3381(QalImpf) into battle,H4421 and perish.H5595(NiphPerf) [11] The LordH3068 forbidH2486 that I should stretch forthH7971(QalInf) mine handH3027 against the Lord’sH3068 anointed:H4899 but, I pray thee, takeH3947(QalImpv) thou now the spearH2595 that [is] at his bolster,H4763 and the cruseH6835 of water,H4325 and let us go.H3212(QalImpf) [12] So DavidH1732 tookH3947(QalImpf) the spearH2595 and the cruseH6835 of waterH4325 from Saul’sH7586 bolster;H7226 and they gat them away,H3212(QalImpf) and no man sawH7200(QalActPtc) [it], nor knewH3045(QalActPtc) [it], neither awaked:H6974(HiphPtc) for they [were] all asleep;H3463 because a deep sleepH8639 from the LordH3068 was fallenH5307(QalPerf) upon them. [13] Then DavidH1732 went overH5674(QalImpf) to the other side,H5676 and stoodH5975(QalImpf) on the topH7218 of an hillH2022 afar off;H7350 a greatH7227 spaceH4725 [being] between them: [14] And DavidH1732 criedH7121(QalImpf) to the people,H5971 and to AbnerH74 the sonH1121 of Ner,H5369 saying,H559(QalInf) AnswerestH6030(QalImpf) thou not, Abner?H74 Then AbnerH74 answeredH6030(QalImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) Who [art] thou [that] criestH7121(QalPerf) to the king?H4428 [15] And DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) to Abner,H74 [Art] not thou a [valiant] man?H376 and who [is] like to thee in Israel?H3478 wherefore then hast thou not keptH8104(QalPerf) thy lordH113 the king?H4428 for there cameH935(QalPerf) oneH259 of the peopleH5971 in to destroyH7843(HiphInf) the kingH4428 thy lord.H113 [16] This thingH1697 [is] not goodH2896 that thou hast done.H6213(QalPerf) [As] the LordH3068 liveth,H2416 ye [are] worthyH1121 to die,H4194 because ye have not keptH8104(QalPerf) your master,H113 the Lord’sH3068 anointed.H4899 And now seeH7200(QalImpv) where the king’sH4428 spearH2595 [is], and the cruseH6835 of waterH4325 that [was] at his bolster.H4763 [17] And SaulH7586 knewH5234(HiphImpf) David’sH1732 voice,H6963 and said,H559(QalImpf) [Is] this thy voice,H6963 my sonH1121 David?H1732 And DavidH1732 said,H559(QalImpf) [It is] my voice,H6963 my lord,H113 O king.H4428 [18] And he said,H559(QalImpf) Wherefore doth my lordH113 thus pursueH7291(QalActPtc) afterH310 his servant?H5650 for what have I done?H6213(QalPerf) or what evilH7451 [is] in mine hand?H3027 [19] Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lordH113 the kingH4428 hearH8085(QalImpf) the wordsH1697 of his servant.H5650 If the LordH3068 have stirred thee upH5496(HiphPerf) against me, let him acceptH7306(HiphImpf) an offering:H4503 but if [they be] the childrenH1121 of men,H120 cursedH779(QalPasPtc) [be] they beforeH6440 the Lord;H3068 for they have drivenH1644(PielPerf) me out this dayH3117 from abidingH5596(HithInf) in the inheritanceH5159 of the Lord,H3068 saying,H559(QalInf) Go,H3212(QalImpv) serveH5647(QalImpv) otherH312 gods.H430 [20] Now therefore, let not my bloodH1818 fallH5307(QalImpf) to the earthH776 before the faceH6440 of the Lord:H3068 for the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 is come outH3318(QalPerf) to seekH1245(PielInf) aH259 flea,H6550 as when one doth huntH7291(QalImpf) a partridgeH7124 in the mountains.H2022 [21] Then saidH559(QalImpf) Saul,H7586 I have sinned:H2398(QalPerf) return,H7725(QalImpv) my sonH1121 David:H1732 for I will no more do thee harm,H7489(HiphImpf) because my soulH5315 was preciousH3365(QalPerf) in thine eyesH5869 this day:H3117 behold, I have played the fool,H5528(HiphPerf) and have erredH7686(QalImpf) exceedingly.H7235(HiphInf) [22] And DavidH1732 answeredH6030(QalImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) Behold the king’sH4428 spear!H2595 and let oneH259 of the young menH5288 come overH5674(QalImpf) and fetchH3947(QalImpf) it. [23] The LordH3068 renderH7725(HiphImpf) to every manH376 his righteousnessH6666 and his faithfulness:H530 for the LordH3068 deliveredH5414(QalPerf) thee into [my] handH3027 to day,H3117 but I wouldH14(QalPerf) not stretch forthH7971(QalInf) mine handH3027 against the Lord’sH3068 anointed.H4899 [24] And, behold, as thy lifeH5315 was much set byH1431(QalPerf) this dayH3117 in mine eyes,H5869 so let my lifeH5315 be much set byH1431(QalImpf) in the eyesH5869 of the Lord,H3068 and let him deliverH5337(HiphImpf) me out of all tribulation.H6869 [25] Then SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) to David,H1732 BlessedH1288(QalPasPtc) [be] thou, my sonH1121 David:H1732 thou shalt both doH6213(QalImpf) greatH6213(QalInf) [things], and also shalt stillH3201(QalInf) prevail.H3201(QalImpf) So DavidH1732 wentH3212(QalImpf) on his way,H1870 and SaulH7586 returnedH7725(QalPerf) to his place.H4725
