[1] Now it happened on a day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come! Let’s go over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side.” But he didn’t tell his father. [2] Saul stayed in the uttermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron; and the people who were with him were about six hundred men, [3] including Ahijah the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli the priest of Yahweh in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. The people didn’t know that Jonathan was gone. [4] Between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side; and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. [5] The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba. [6] Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come! Let’s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Yahweh will work for us, for there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few.” [7] His armor bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Go, and behold, I am with you according to your heart.” [8] Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will pass over to the men, and we will reveal ourselves to them. [9] If they say this to us, ‘Wait until we come to you!’ then we will stand still in our place and will not go up to them. [10] But if they say this, ‘Come up to us!’ then we will go up, for Yahweh has delivered them into our hand. This shall be the sign to us.” [11] Both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said, “Behold, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they had hidden themselves!” [12] The men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something!”Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come up after me, for Yahweh has delivered them into the hand of Israel.” [13] Jonathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armor bearer after him, and they fell before Jonathan; and his armor bearer killed them after him. [14] That first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armor bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow’s length in an acre of land. [15] There was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people; the garrison and the raiders also trembled; and the earth quaked, so there was an exceedingly great trembling. [16] The watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and behold, the multitude melted away and scattered. [17] Then Saul said to the people who were with him, “Count now, and see who is missing from us.” When they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there. [18] Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring God’s ark here.” For God’s ark was with the children of Israel at that time. [19] While Saul talked to the priest, the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand!” [20] Saul and all the people who were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle; and behold, they were all striking each other with their swords in very great confusion. [21] Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines before and who went up with them into the camp from all around, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. [22] Likewise all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle. [23] So Yahweh saved Israel that day; and the battle passed over by Beth Aven. [24] The men of Israel were distressed that day; for Saul had adjured the people, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until it is evening, and I am avenged of my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food. [25] All the people came into the forest; and there was honey on the ground. [26] When the people had come to the forest, behold, honey was dripping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath. [27] But Jonathan didn’t hear when his father commanded the people with the oath. Therefore he put out the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes brightened. [28] Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father directly commanded the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food today.’ ” So the people were faint. [29] Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. Please look how my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey. [30] How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the plunder of their enemies which they found? For now there has been no great slaughter among the Philistines.” [31] They struck the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. The people were very faint; [32] and the people pounced on the plunder, and took sheep, cattle, and calves, and killed them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood. [33] Then they told Saul, saying, “Behold, the people are sinning against Yahweh, in that they eat meat with the blood.”He said, “You have dealt treacherously. Roll a large stone to me today!” [34] Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and tell them, ‘Every man bring me here his ox, and every man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat; and don’t sin against Yahweh in eating meat with the blood.’ ” All the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and killed them there. [35] Saul built an altar to Yahweh. This was the first altar that he built to Yahweh. [36] Saul said, “Let’s go down after the Philistines by night, and take plunder among them until the morning light. Let’s not leave a man of them.”They said, “Do whatever seems good to you.”Then the priest said, “Let’s draw near here to God.” [37] Saul asked counsel of God: “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But he didn’t answer him that day. [38] Saul said, “Draw near here, all you chiefs of the people, and know and see in whom this sin has been today. [39] For as Yahweh lives, who saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him. [40] Then he said to all Israel, “You be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.”The people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.” [41] Therefore Saul said to Yahweh, the God of Israel, “Show the right.”Jonathan and Saul were chosen, but the people escaped. [42] Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.”Jonathan was selected. [43] Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done!”Jonathan told him, and said, “I certainly did taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; and behold, I must die.” [44] Saul said, “God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan.” [45] The people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God today!” So the people rescued Jonathan, so he didn’t die. [46] Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place. [47] Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side: against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned himself, he defeated them. [48] He did valiantly and struck the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them. [49] Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal. [50] The name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the captain of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle. [51] Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel. [52] There was severe war against the Philistines all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man or any valiant man, he took him into his service.

[1] Now it came to pass upon a day,H3117 that JonathanH3129 the sonH1121 of SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto the young manH5288 that bareH5375(QalActPtc) his armour,H3627 Come,H3212(QalImpv) and let us go overH5674(QalImpf) to the Philistines’H6430 garrison,H4673 that [is] on the other side.H5676 But he toldH5046(HiphPerf) not his father.H1 [2] And SaulH7586 tarriedH3427(QalActPtc) in the uttermostH7097 part of GibeahH1390 under a pomegranate treeH7416 which [is] in Migron:H4051 and the peopleH5971 that [were] with him [were] about sixH8337 hundredH3967 men;H376 [3] And Ahiah,H281 the sonH1121 of Ahitub,H285 Ichabod’sH350 brother,H251 the sonH1121 of Phinehas,H6372 the sonH1121 of Eli,H5941 the Lord’sH3068 priestH3548 in Shiloh,H7887 wearingH5375(QalActPtc) an ephod.H646 And the peopleH5971 knewH3045(QalPerf) not that JonathanH3129 was gone.H1980(QalPerf) [4] And between the passages,H4569 by which JonathanH3129 soughtH1245(PielPerf) to go overH5674(QalInf) unto the Philistines’H6430 garrison,H4673 [there was] a sharpH8127 rockH5553 on the one side,H5676 and a sharpH8127 rockH5553 on the other side:H5676 and the nameH8034 of the oneH259 [was] Bozez,H949 and the nameH8034 of the otherH259 Seneh.H5573 [5] The forefrontH8127 of the oneH259 [was] situateH4690 northwardH6828 over againstH4136 Michmash,H4363 and the otherH259 southwardH5045 over againstH4136 Gibeah.H1387 [6] And JonathanH3083 saidH559(QalImpf) to the young manH5288 that bareH5375(QalActPtc) his armour,H3627 Come,H3212(QalImpv) and let us go overH5674(QalImpf) unto the garrisonH4673 of these uncircumcised:H6189 it may be that the LordH3068 will workH6213(QalImpf) for us: for [there is] no restraintH4622 to the LordH3068 to saveH3467(HiphInf) by manyH7227 or by few.H4592 [7] And his armourbearerH5375(QalActPtc) saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, DoH6213(QalImpv) all that [is] in thine heart:H3824 turnH5186(QalImpv) thee; behold, I [am] with thee according to thy heart.H3824 [8] Then saidH559(QalImpf) Jonathan,H3083 Behold, we will pass overH5674(QalActPtc) unto [these] men,H582 and we will discoverH1540(NiphPerf) ourselves unto them. [9] If they sayH559(QalImpf) thus unto us, TarryH1826(QalImpv) until we comeH5060(HiphInf) to you; then we will stand stillH5975(QalPerf) in our place, and will not go upH5927(QalImpf) unto them. [10] But if they sayH559(QalImpf) thus, Come upH5927(QalImpv) unto us; then we will go up:H5927(QalPerf) for the LordH3068 hath deliveredH5414(QalPerf) them into our hand:H3027 and this [shall be] a signH226 unto us. [11] And bothH8147 of them discoveredH1540(NiphImpf) themselves unto the garrisonH4673 of the Philistines:H6430 and the PhilistinesH6430 said,H559(QalImpf) Behold, the HebrewsH5680 come forthH3318(QalActPtc) out of the holesH2356 where they had hidH2244(HithPerf) themselves. [12] And the menH582 of the garrisonH4675 answeredH6030(QalImpf) JonathanH3129 and his armourbearer,H5375(QalActPtc) and said,H559(QalImpf) Come upH5927(QalImpv) to us, and we will shewH3045(HiphImpf) you a thing.H1697 And JonathanH3129 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his armourbearer,H5375(QalActPtc) Come upH5927(QalImpv) afterH310 me: for the LordH3068 hath deliveredH5414(QalPerf) them into the handH3027 of Israel.H3478 [13] And JonathanH3129 climbed upH5927(QalImpf) upon his handsH3027 and upon his feet,H7272 and his armourbearerH5375(QalActPtc) afterH310 him: and they fellH5307(QalImpf) beforeH6440 Jonathan;H3129 and his armourbearerH5375(QalActPtc) slewH4191(PolePtc) afterH310 him. [14] And that firstH7223 slaughter,H4347 which JonathanH3129 and his armourbearerH5375(QalActPtc) made,H5221(HiphPerf) was about twentyH6242 men,H376 within as it were an halfH2677 acreH4618 of land,H7704 [which] a yokeH6776 [of oxen might plow]. [15] And there was tremblingH2731 in the host,H4264 in the field,H7704 and among all the people:H5971 the garrison,H4673 and the spoilers,H7843(HiphPtc) they also trembled,H2729(QalPerf) and the earthH776 quaked:H7264(QalImpf) so it was a very greatH430 trembling.H2731 [16] And the watchmenH6822(QalActPtc) of SaulH7586 in GibeahH1390 of BenjaminH1144 looked;H7200(QalImpf) and, behold, the multitudeH1995 melted away,H4127(NiphPerf) and they wentH3212(QalImpf) on beating downH1986(QalInf) [one another]. [17] Then saidH559(QalImpf) SaulH7586 unto the peopleH5971 that [were] with him, NumberH6485(QalImpv) now, and seeH7200(QalImpv) who is goneH1980(QalPerf) from us. And when they had numbered,H6485(QalImpf) behold, JonathanH3129 and his armourbearerH5375(QalActPtc) [were] not [there]. [18] And SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Ahiah,H281 Bring hitherH5066(HiphImpv) the arkH727 of God.H430 For the arkH727 of GodH430 was at that timeH3117 with the childrenH1121 of Israel.H3478 [19] And it came to pass, while SaulH7586 talkedH1696(PielPerf) unto the priest,H3548 that the noiseH1995 that [was] in the hostH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 wentH3212(QalImpf) onH1980(QalInf) and increased:H7227 and SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto the priest,H3548 WithdrawH622(QalImpv) thine hand.H3027 [20] And SaulH7586 and all the peopleH5971 that [were] with him assembledH2199(NiphImpf) themselves, and they cameH935(QalImpf) to the battle:H4421 and, behold, every man’sH376 swordH2719 was against his fellow,H7453 [and there was] a veryH3966 greatH1419 discomfiture.H4103 [21] Moreover the HebrewsH5680 [that] were with the PhilistinesH6430 beforeH865 that time,H8032 which went upH5927(QalPerf) with them into the campH4264 [from the country] round about,H5439 even they also [turned] to be with the IsraelitesH3478 that [were] with SaulH7586 and Jonathan.H3129 [22] Likewise all the menH376 of IsraelH3478 which had hidH2244(HithPtc) themselves in mountH2022 Ephraim,H669 [when] they heardH8085(QalPerf) that the PhilistinesH6430 fled,H5127(QalPerf) even they also followed hardH1692(HiphImpf) afterH310 them in the battle.H4421 [23] So the LordH3068 savedH3467(HiphImpf) IsraelH3478 that day:H3117 and the battleH4421 passed overH5674(QalPerf) unto Bethaven.H1007 [24] And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 were distressedH5065(NiphPerf) that day:H3117 for SaulH7586 had adjuredH422(HiphImpf) the people,H5971 saying,H559(QalInf) CursedH779(QalPasPtc) [be] the manH376 that eatethH398(QalImpf) [any] foodH3899 until evening,H6153 that I may be avengedH5358(NiphPerf) on mine enemies.H341(QalActPtc) So none of the peopleH5971 tastedH2938(QalPerf) [any] food.H3899 [25] And all [they of] the landH776 cameH935(QalPerf) to a wood;H3293 and there was honeyH1706 uponH6440 the ground.H7704 [26] And when the peopleH5971 were comeH935(QalImpf) into the wood,H3293 behold, the honeyH1706 dropped;H1982 but no man putH5381(HiphPtc) his handH3027 to his mouth:H6310 for the peopleH5971 fearedH3372(QalPerf) the oath.H7621 [27] But JonathanH3129 heardH8085(QalPerf) not when his fatherH1 chargedH7650 the peopleH5971 with the oath:H7650(HiphInf) wherefore he put forthH7971(QalImpf) the endH7097 of the rodH4294 that [was] in his hand,H3027 and dippedH2881(QalImpf) it in an honeycomb,H3295 and putH7725(HiphImpf) his handH3027 to his mouth;H6310 and his eyesH5869 were enlightened.H215(QalImpf) [28] Then answeredH6030(QalImpf) oneH376 of the people,H5971 and said,H559(QalImpf) Thy fatherH1 straitlyH7650(HiphInf) chargedH7650 the peopleH5971 with an oath,H7650(HiphPerf) saying,H559(QalInf) CursedH779(QalPasPtc) [be] the manH376 that eatethH398(QalImpf) [any] foodH3899 this day.H3117 And the peopleH5971 were faint.H5774(QalImpf) [29] Then saidH559(QalImpf) Jonathan,H3129 My fatherH1 hath troubledH5916(QalPerf) the land:H776 see,H7200(QalImpv) I pray you, how mine eyesH5869 have been enlightened,H215(QalPerf) because I tastedH2938(QalPerf) a littleH4592 of this honey.H1706 [30] How much more,H637 if haplyH3863 the peopleH5971 had eatenH398(QalPerf) freelyH398(QalInf) to dayH3117 of the spoilH7998 of their enemiesH341(QalActPtc) which they found?H4672(QalPerf) for had there not been now a much greaterH7235(QalPerf) slaughterH4347 among the Philistines?H6430 [31] And they smoteH5221(HiphImpf) the PhilistinesH6430 that dayH3117 from MichmashH4363 to Aijalon:H357 and the peopleH5971 were veryH3966 faint.H5774(QalImpf) [32] And the peopleH5971 flewH5860(QalImpf) upon the spoil,H7998 and tookH3947(QalImpf) sheep,H6629 and oxen,H1241 and calves,H1121 and slewH7819(QalImpf) [them] on the ground:H776 and the peopleH5971 did eatH398(QalImpf) [them] with the blood.H1818 [33] Then they toldH5046(HiphImpf) Saul,H7586 saying,H559(QalInf) Behold, the peopleH5971 sinH2398(QalActPtc) against the Lord,H3068 in that they eatH398(QalInf) with the blood.H1818 And he said,H559(QalImpf) Ye have transgressed:H898(QalPerf) rollH1556(QalImpv) a greatH1419 stoneH68 unto me this day.H3117 [34] And SaulH7586 said,H559(QalImpf) DisperseH6327(QalImpv) yourselves among the people,H5971 and sayH559(QalPerf) unto them, Bring me hitherH5066(HiphImpv) every manH376 his ox,H7794 and every manH376 his sheep,H7716 and slayH7819(QalPerf) [them] here, and eat;H398(QalPerf) and sinH2398(QalImpf) not against the LordH3068 in eatingH398(QalInf) with the blood.H1818 And all the peopleH5971 broughtH5066(HiphImpf) every manH376 his oxH7794 with himH3027 that night,H3915 and slewH7819(QalImpf) [them] there. [35] And SaulH7586 builtH1129(QalImpf) an altarH4196 unto the Lord:H3068 the same was the firstH2490(HiphPerf) altarH4196 that he builtH1129(QalInf) unto the Lord.H3068 [36] And SaulH7586 said,H559(QalImpf) Let us go downH3381(QalImpf) afterH310 the PhilistinesH6430 by night,H3915 and spoilH962(QalImpf) them until the morningH1242 light,H216 and let us not leaveH7604(HiphImpf) a manH376 of them. And they said,H559(QalImpf) DoH6213(QalImpv) whatsoever seemethH5869 goodH2896 unto thee. Then saidH559(QalImpf) the priest,H3548 Let us draw nearH7126(QalImpf) hitherH1988 unto God.H430 [37] And SaulH7586 askedH7592(QalImpf) counsel of God,H430 Shall I go downH3381(QalImpf) afterH310 the Philistines?H6430 wilt thou deliverH5414(QalImpf) them into the handH3027 of Israel?H3478 But he answeredH6030(QalPerf) him not that day.H3117 [38] And SaulH7586 said,H559(QalImpf) Draw ye nearH5066(QalImpv) hither,H1988 all the chiefH6438 of the people:H5971 and knowH3045(QalImpv) and seeH7200(QalImpv) whereinH4100 this sinH2403 hath been this day.H3117 [39] For, [as] the LordH3068 liveth,H2416 which savethH3467(HiphPtc) Israel,H3478 though it beH3426 in JonathanH3129 my son,H1121 he shall surelyH4191(QalInf) die.H4191(QalImpf) But [there was] not a man among all the peopleH5971 [that] answeredH6030(QalActPtc) him. [40] Then saidH559(QalImpf) he unto all Israel,H3478 Be ye on oneH259 side,H5676 and I and JonathanH3129 my sonH1121 will be on the otherH259 side.H5676 And the peopleH5971 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Saul,H7586 DoH6213(QalImpv) what seemethH5869 goodH2896 unto thee. [41] Therefore SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) unto the LordH3068 GodH430 of Israel,H3478 GiveH3051(QalImpv) a perfectH8549 [lot]. And SaulH7586 and JonathanH3129 were taken:H3920(NiphImpf) but the peopleH5971 escaped.H3318(QalPerf) [42] And SaulH7586 said,H559(QalImpf) CastH5307(HiphImpv) [lots] between me and JonathanH3129 my son.H1121 And JonathanH3129 was taken.H3920(NiphImpf) [43] Then SaulH7586 saidH559(QalImpf) to Jonathan,H3129 TellH5046(HiphImpv) me what thou hast done.H6213(QalPerf) And JonathanH3129 toldH5046(HiphImpf) him, and said,H559(QalImpf) I did butH2938(QalInf) tasteH2938(QalPerf) a littleH4592 honeyH1706 with the endH7097 of the rodH4294 that [was] in mine hand,H3027 [and], lo,H2009 I must die.H4191(QalImpf) [44] And SaulH7586 answered,H559(QalImpf) GodH430 do soH6213(QalImpf) and more also:H3254(HiphImpf) for thou shalt surelyH4191(QalInf) die,H4191(QalImpf) Jonathan.H3129 [45] And the peopleH5971 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Saul,H7586 Shall JonathanH3129 die,H4191(QalImpf) who hath wroughtH6213(QalPerf) this greatH1419 salvationH3444 in Israel?H3478 God forbid:H2486 [as] the LordH3068 liveth,H2416 there shall not one hairH8185 of his headH7218 fallH5307(QalImpf) to the ground;H776 for he hath wroughtH6213(QalPerf) with GodH430 this day.H3117 So the peopleH5971 rescuedH6299(QalImpf) Jonathan,H3129 that he diedH4191(QalPerf) not. [46] Then SaulH7586 went upH5927(QalImpf) from followingH310 the Philistines:H6430 and the PhilistinesH6430 wentH1980(QalPerf) to their own place.H4725 [47] So SaulH7586 tookH3920(QalPerf) the kingdomH4410 over Israel,H3478 and foughtH3898(NiphImpf) against all his enemiesH341(QalActPtc) on every side,H5439 against Moab,H4124 and against the childrenH1121 of Ammon,H5983 and against Edom,H123 and against the kingsH4428 of Zobah,H6678 and against the Philistines:H6430 and whithersoever he turnedH6437(QalImpf) himself, he vexedH7561(HiphImpf) [them]. [48] And he gatheredH6213(QalImpf) an host,H2428 and smoteH5221(HiphImpf) the Amalekites,H6002 and deliveredH5337(HiphImpf) IsraelH3478 out of the handsH3027 of them that spoiledH8154(QalActPtc) them. [49] Now the sonsH1121 of SaulH7586 were Jonathan,H3129 and Ishui,H3440 and Melchishua:H4444 and the namesH8034 of his twoH8147 daughtersH1323 [were these]; the nameH8034 of the firstbornH1067 Merab,H4764 and the nameH8034 of the youngerH6996 Michal:H4324 [50] And the nameH8034 of Saul’sH7586 wifeH802 [was] Ahinoam,H293 the daughterH1323 of Ahimaaz:H290 and the nameH8034 of the captainH8269 of his hostH6635 [was] Abner,H74 the sonH1121 of Ner,H5369 Saul’sH7586 uncle.H1730 [51] And KishH7027 [was] the fatherH1 of Saul;H7586 and NerH5369 the fatherH1 of AbnerH74 [was] the sonH1121 of Abiel.H22 [52] And there was soreH2389 warH4421 against the PhilistinesH6430 all the daysH3117 of Saul:H7586 and when SaulH7586 sawH7200(QalPerf) any strongH1368 man,H376 or any valiantH2428 man,H1121 he tookH622(QalImpf) him unto him.
