[1] Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. [2] He had two wives. The name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. [3] This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh§ of Armies in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Yahweh, were there. [4] When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and her daughters; [5] but he gave a double portion to Hannah, for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had shut up her womb. [6] Her rival provoked her severely, to irritate her, because Yahweh had shut up her womb. [7] So year by year, when she went up to Yahweh’s house, her rival provoked her. Therefore she wept, and didn’t eat. [8] Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why don’t you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?” [9] So Hannah rose up after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of Yahweh’s temple. [10] She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, weeping bitterly. [11] She vowed a vow, and said, “Yahweh of Armies, if you will indeed look at the affliction of your servant and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a boy, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.” [12] As she continued praying before Yahweh, Eli saw her mouth. [13] Now Hannah spoke in her heart. Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. [14] Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Get rid of your wine!” [15] Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have not been drinking wine or strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Yahweh. [16] Don’t consider your servant a wicked woman; for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation.” [17] Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; and may the God§ of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him.” [18] She said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” So the woman went her way and ate; and her facial expression wasn’t sad any more. [19] They rose up in the morning early and worshiped Yahweh, then returned and came to their house to Ramah. Then Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her. [20] When the time had come, Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel,ⓘ saying, “Because I have asked him of Yahweh.” [21] The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice and his vow. [22] But Hannah didn’t go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and stay there forever.” [23] Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may Yahweh establish his word.”So the woman waited and nursed her son until she weaned him. [24] When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephahⓘ of meal, and a container of wine, and brought him to Yahweh’s house in Shiloh. The child was young. [25] They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli. [26] She said, “Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to Yahweh. [27] I prayed for this child, and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him. [28] Therefore I have also given him to Yahweh. As long as he lives he is given to Yahweh.” He worshiped Yahweh there.

King James Version
[1] Now there was a certainH259 manH376 of Ramathaimzophim,H7436 of mountH2022 Ephraim,H669 and his nameH8034 [was] Elkanah,H511 the sonH1121 of Jeroham,H3395 the sonH1121 of Elihu,H453 the sonH1121 of Tohu,H8459 the sonH1121 of Zuph,H6689 an Ephrathite:H673 [2] And he had twoH8147 wives;H802 the nameH8034 of the oneH259 [was] Hannah,H2584 and the nameH8034 of the otherH8145 Peninnah:H6444 and PeninnahH6444 had children,H3206 but HannahH2584 had no children.H3206 [3] And thisH1931 manH376 went upH5927(QalPerf) out of his cityH5892 yearlyH3117 to worshipH7812(HithInf) and to sacrificeH2076(QalInf) unto the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 in Shiloh.H7887 And the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of Eli,H5941 HophniH2652 and Phinehas,H6372 the priestsH3548 of the Lord,H3068 [were] there. [4] And when the timeH3117 was that ElkanahH511 offered,H2076(QalImpf) he gaveH5414(QalPerf) to PeninnahH6444 his wife,H802 and to all her sonsH1121 and her daughters,H1323 portions:H4490 [5] But unto HannahH2584 he gaveH5414(QalImpf) aH259 worthyH639 portion;H4490 for he lovedH157(QalPerf) Hannah:H2584 but the LordH3068 had shut upH5462(QalPerf) her womb.H7358 [6] And her adversaryH6869 also provokedH3707(PielPerf) her sore,H3708 for to make her fret,H7481(HiphInf) because the LordH3068 had shutH5462(QalPerf) upH1157 her womb.H7358 [7] And [as] he didH6213(QalImpf) so yearH8141 by year,H8141 whenH1767 she went upH5927(QalInf) to the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 so she provokedH3707(HiphImpf) her; therefore she wept,H1058(QalImpf) and did not eat.H398(QalImpf) [8] Then saidH559(QalImpf) ElkanahH511 her husbandH376 to her, Hannah,H2584 why weepestH1058(QalImpf) thou? and why eatestH398(QalImpf) thou not? and why is thy heartH3824 grieved?H3415(QalImpf) [am] not I betterH2896 to thee than tenH6235 sons?H1121 [9] So HannahH2584 rose upH6965(QalImpf) afterH310 they had eatenH398(QalInf) in Shiloh,H7887 and afterH310 they had drunk.H8354(QalInf) Now EliH5941 the priestH3548 satH3427(QalActPtc) upon a seatH3678 by a postH4201 of the templeH1964 of the Lord.H3068 [10] And she [was] in bitternessH4751 of soul,H5315 and prayedH6419(HithImpf) unto the Lord,H3068 and weptH1058(QalImpf) sore.H1058(QalInf) [11] And she vowedH5087(QalImpf) a vow,H5088 and said,H559(QalImpf) O LordH3068 of hosts,H6635 if thou wilt indeedH7200(QalInf) lookH7200(QalImpf) on the afflictionH6040 of thine handmaid,H519 and rememberH2142(QalPerf) me, and not forgetH7911(QalImpf) thine handmaid,H519 but wilt giveH5414(QalPerf) unto thine handmaidH519 a manH582 child,H2233 then I will giveH5414(QalPerf) him unto the LordH3068 all the daysH3117 of his life,H2416 and there shall no razorH4177 comeH5927(QalImpf) upon his head.H7218 [12] And it came to pass, as she continuedH7235(HiphPerf) prayingH6419(HithInf) beforeH6440 the Lord,H3068 that EliH5941 markedH8104(QalActPtc) her mouth.H6310 [13] Now Hannah,H2584 she spakeH1696(PielPtc) in her heart;H3820 only her lipsH8193 moved,H5128(QalPtc) but her voiceH6963 was not heard:H8085(NiphImpf) therefore EliH5941 thoughtH2803(QalImpf) she had been drunken.H7910 [14] And EliH5941 saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken?H7937(HithImpf) put awayH5493(HiphImpv) thy wineH3196 from thee. [15] And HannahH2584 answeredH6030(QalImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) No, my lord,H113 I [am] a womanH802 of a sorrowfulH7186 spirit:H7307 I have drunkH8354(QalPerf) neither wineH3196 nor strong drink,H7941 but have poured outH8210(QalImpf) my soulH5315 beforeH6440 the Lord.H3068 [16] CountH5414(QalImpf) not thine handmaidH519 forH6440 a daughterH1323 of Belial:H1100 for out of the abundanceH7230 of my complaintH7879 and griefH3708 have I spokenH1696(PielPerf) hitherto. [17] Then EliH5941 answeredH6030(QalImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) GoH3212(QalImpv) in peace:H7965 and the GodH430 of IsraelH3478 grantH5414(QalImpf) [thee] thy petitionH7596 that thou hast askedH7592(QalPerf) of him. [18] And she said,H559(QalImpf) Let thine handmaidH8198 findH4672(QalImpf) graceH2580 in thy sight.H5869 So the womanH802 wentH3212(QalImpf) her way,H1870 and did eat,H398(QalImpf) and her countenanceH6440 was no more [sad]. [19] And they rose upH7925 in the morningH1242 early,H7925(HiphImpf) and worshippedH7812(HithImpf) beforeH6440 the Lord,H3068 and returned,H7725(QalImpf) and cameH935(QalImpf) to their houseH1004 to Ramah:H7414 and ElkanahH511 knewH3045(QalImpf) HannahH2584 his wife;H802 and the LordH3068 rememberedH2142(QalImpf) her. [20] Wherefore it came to pass, when the timeH3117 was comeH8622 about after HannahH2584 had conceived,H2029(QalImpf) that she bareH3205(QalImpf) a son,H1121 and calledH7121(QalImpf) his nameH8034 Samuel,H8050 [saying], Because I have askedH7592(QalPerf) him of the Lord.H3068 [21] And the manH376 Elkanah,H511 and all his house,H1004 went upH5927(QalImpf) to offerH2076(QalInf) unto the LordH3068 the yearlyH3117 sacrifice,H2077 and his vow.H5088 [22] But HannahH2584 went not up;H5927(QalPerf) for she saidH559(QalPerf) unto her husband,H376 [I will not go up] until the childH5288 be weaned,H1580(NiphImpf) and [then] I will bringH935(HiphPerf) him, that he may appearH7200(NiphPerf) beforeH6440 the Lord,H3068 and there abideH3427(QalPerf) forH5704 ever.H5769 [23] And ElkanahH511 her husbandH376 saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, DoH6213(QalImpv) what seemethH5869 thee good;H2896 tarryH3427(QalImpv) until thou have weanedH1580(QalInf) him; only the LordH3068 establishH6965(HiphImpf) his word.H1697 So the womanH802 abode,H3427(QalImpf) and gave her sonH1121 suckH3243(HiphImpf) until she weanedH1580(QalInf) him. [24] And when she had weanedH1580(QalPerf) him, she took him upH5927(HiphImpf) with her, with threeH7969 bullocks,H6499 and oneH259 ephahH374 of flour,H7058 and a bottleH5035 of wine,H3196 and broughtH935(HiphImpf) him unto the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 in Shiloh:H7887 and the childH5288 [was] young.H5288 [25] And they slewH7819(QalImpf) a bullock,H6499 and broughtH935(HiphImpf) the childH5288 to Eli.H5941 [26] And she said,H559(QalImpf) OhH994 my lord,H113 [as] thy soulH5315 liveth,H2416 my lord,H113 I [am] the womanH802 that stoodH5324(NiphPtc) by thee here, prayingH6419(HithInf) unto the Lord.H3068 [27] For this childH5288 I prayed;H6419(HithPerf) and the LordH3068 hath givenH5414(QalImpf) me my petitionH7596 which I askedH7592(QalPerf) of him: [28] Therefore also I have lentH7592(HiphPerf) him to the Lord;H3068 as long as he livethH3117 he shall be lentH7592(QalPasPtc) to the Lord.H3068 And he worshippedH7812(HithImpf) the LordH3068 there.
