[1] Samuel died; and all Israel gathered themselves together and mourned for him, and buried him at his house at Ramah. Then David arose and went down to the wilderness of Paran. [2] There was a man in Maon whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great. He had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats; and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel. [3] Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail. This woman was intelligent and had a beautiful face; but the man was surly and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb. [4] David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep. [5] David sent ten young men; and David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name. [6] Tell him, ‘Long life to you! Peace be to you! Peace be to your house! Peace be to all that you have! [7] Now I have heard that you have shearers. Your shepherds have now been with us, and we didn’t harm them. Nothing was missing from them all the time they were in Carmel. [8] Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let the young men find favor in your eyes, for we come on a good day. Please give whatever comes to your hand to your servants and to your son David.’ ” [9] When David’s young men came, they spoke to Nabal all those words in the name of David, and waited. [10] Nabal answered David’s servants and said, “Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants who break away from their masters these days. [11] Shall I then take my bread, my water, and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men who I don’t know where they come from?” [12] So David’s young men turned on their way and went back, and came and told him all these words. [13] David said to his men, “Every man put on his sword!”Every man put on his sword. David also put on his sword. About four hundred men followed David, and two hundred stayed by the baggage. [14] But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, “Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master; and he insulted them. [15] But the men were very good to us, and we were not harmed, and we didn’t miss anything as long as we went with them, when we were in the fields. [16] They were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. [17] Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master and against all his house, for he is such a worthless fellow that one can’t speak to him.” [18] Then Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves of bread, two containers of wine, five sheep ready dressed, five seahsⓘ of parched grain, one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys. [19] She said to her young men, “Go on before me. Behold, I am coming after you.” But she didn’t tell her husband, Nabal. [20] As she rode on her donkey, and came down hidden by the mountain, behold, David and his men came down toward her, and she met them. [21] Now David had said, “Surely in vain I have kept all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained to him. He has returned me evil for good. [22] God do so to the enemies of David, and more also, if I leave of all that belongs to him by the morning light so much as one who urinates on a wall.”§ [23] When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got off her donkey, and fell before David on her face and bowed herself to the ground. [24] She fell at his feet and said, “On me, my lord, on me be the blame! Please let your servant speak in your ears. Hear the words of your servant. [25] Please don’t let my lord pay attention to this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabalⓘ is his name, and folly is with him; but I, your servant, didn’t see my lord’s young men whom you sent. [26] Now therefore, my lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, since Yahweh has withheld you from blood guiltiness and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now therefore let your enemies and those who seek evil to my lord be as Nabal. [27] Now this present which your servant has brought to my lord, let it be given to the young men who follow my lord. [28] Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For Yahweh will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fights Yahweh’s battles. Evil will not be found in you all your days. [29] Though men may rise up to pursue you and to seek your soul, yet the soul of my lord will be bound in the bundle of life with Yahweh your God. He will sling out the souls of your enemies as from a sling’s pocket. [30] It will come to pass, when Yahweh has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and has appointed you prince over Israel, [31] that this shall be no grief to you, nor offense of heart to my lord, either that you have shed blood without cause, or that my lord has avenged himself. When Yahweh has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.” [32] David said to Abigail, “Blessed is Yahweh, the God of Israel, who sent you today to meet me! [33] Blessed is your discretion, and blessed are you, who have kept me today from blood guiltiness, and from avenging myself with my own hand. [34] For indeed, as Yahweh the God of Israel lives, who has withheld me from harming you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely there wouldn’t have been left to Nabal by the morning light so much as one who urinates on a wall.”§ [35] So David received from her hand that which she had brought him. Then he said to her, “Go up in peace to your house. Behold, I have listened to your voice and have granted your request.” [36] Abigail came to Nabal; and behold, he held a feast in his house like the feast of a king. Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. Therefore she told him nothing until the morning light. [37] In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things; and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. [38] About ten days later, Yahweh struck Nabal, so that he died. [39] When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed is Yahweh, who has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from evil. Yahweh has returned the evildoing of Nabal on his own head.”David sent and spoke concerning Abigail, to take her to himself as wife. [40] When David’s servants had come to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, “David has sent us to you, to take you to him as wife.” [41] She arose and bowed herself with her face to the earth, and said, “Behold, your servant is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.” [42] Abigail hurriedly arose and rode on a donkey with her five maids who followed her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife. [43] David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they both became his wives. [44] Now Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.

[1] And SamuelH8050 died;H4191(QalImpf) and all the IsraelitesH3478 were gathered together,H6908(NiphImpf) and lamentedH5594(QalImpf) him, and buriedH6912(QalImpf) him in his houseH1004 at Ramah.H7414 And DavidH1732 arose,H6965(QalImpf) and went downH3381(QalImpf) to the wildernessH4057 of Paran.H6290 [2] And [there was] a manH376 in Maon,H4584 whose possessionsH4639 [were] in Carmel;H3760 and the manH376 [was] veryH3966 great,H1419 and he had threeH7969 thousandH505 sheep,H6629 and a thousandH505 goats:H5795 and he was shearingH1494(QalInf) his sheepH6629 in Carmel.H3760 [3] Now the nameH8034 of the manH376 [was] Nabal;H5037 and the nameH8034 of his wifeH802 Abigail:H26 and [she was] a womanH802 of goodH2896 understanding,H7922 and of a beautifulH3303 countenance:H8389 but the manH376 [was] churlishH7186 and evilH7451 in his doings;H4611 and he [was] of the house of Caleb.H3614 [4] And DavidH1732 heardH8085(QalImpf) in the wildernessH4057 that NabalH5037 did shearH1494(QalActPtc) his sheep.H6629 [5] And DavidH1732 sent outH7971(QalImpf) tenH6235 young men,H5288 and DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) unto the young men,H5288 Get you upH5927(QalImpv) to Carmel,H3760 and goH935(QalPerf) to Nabal,H5037 and greetH7592(QalPerf) him in my name:H8034 [6] And thus shall ye sayH559(QalPerf) to him that livethH2416 [in prosperity], PeaceH7965 [be] both to thee, and peaceH7965 [be] to thine house,H1004 and peaceH7965 [be] unto all that thou hast. [7] And now I have heardH8085(QalPerf) that thou hast shearers:H1494(QalActPtc) now thy shepherdsH7462(QalActPtc) which were with us, we hurtH3637(HiphPerf) them not, neither was there oughtH3972 missingH6485(NiphPerf) unto them, all the whileH3117 they were in Carmel.H3760 [8] AskH7592(QalImpv) thy young men,H5288 and they will shewH5046(HiphImpf) thee. Wherefore let the young menH5288 findH4672(QalImpf) favourH2580 in thine eyes:H5869 for we comeH935(QalPerf) in a goodH2896 day:H3117 give,H5414(QalImpv) I pray thee, whatsoever comethH4672(QalImpf) to thine handH3027 unto thy servants,H5650 and to thy sonH1121 David.H1732 [9] And when David’sH1732 young menH5288 came,H935(QalImpf) they spakeH1696(PielImpf) to NabalH5037 according to all those wordsH1697 in the nameH8034 of David,H1732 and ceased.H5117(QalImpf) [10] And NabalH5037 answeredH6030(QalImpf) David’sH1732 servants,H5650 and said,H559(QalImpf) Who [is] David?H1732 and who [is] the sonH1121 of Jesse?H3448 there be manyH7231(QalPerf) servantsH5650 now a daysH3117 that break awayH6555(HithPtc) every manH376 fromH6440 his master.H113 [11] Shall I then takeH3947(QalPerf) my bread,H3899 and my water,H4325 and my fleshH2878 that I have killedH2873(QalPerf) for my shearers,H1494(QalActPtc) and giveH5414(QalPerf) [it] unto men,H582 whom I knowH3045(QalPerf) not whence they [be]? [12] So David’sH1732 young menH5288 turnedH2015(QalImpf) their way,H1870 and went again,H7725(QalImpf) and cameH935(QalImpf) and toldH5046(HiphImpf) him all those sayings.H1697 [13] And DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his men,H582 Gird ye onH2296(QalImpv) every manH376 his sword.H2719 And they girded onH2296(QalImpf) every manH376 his sword;H2719 and DavidH1732 also girded onH2296(QalImpf) his sword:H2719 and there went upH5927(QalImpf) afterH310 DavidH1732 about fourH702 hundredH3967 men;H376 and two hundredH3967 abodeH3427(QalPerf) by the stuff.H3627 [14] But oneH259 of the young menH5288 toldH5046(HiphPerf) Abigail,H26 Nabal’sH5037 wife,H802 saying,H559(QalInf) Behold, DavidH1732 sentH7971(QalPerf) messengersH4397 out of the wildernessH4057 to saluteH1288(PielInf) our master;H113 and he railedH5860(QalImpf) on them. [15] But the menH582 [were] veryH3966 goodH2896 unto us, and we were not hurt,H3637(HophPerf) neither missedH6485(QalPerf) we any thing,H3972 as long asH3117 we were conversantH1980(HithPerf) with them, when we were in the fields:H7704 [16] They were a wallH2346 unto us both by nightH3915 and day,H3119 all the whileH3117 we were with them keepingH7462(QalActPtc) the sheep.H6629 [17] Now therefore knowH3045(QalImpv) and considerH7200(QalImpv) what thou wilt do;H6213(QalImpf) for evilH7451 is determinedH3615(QalPerf) against our master,H113 and against all his household:H1004 for he [is such] a sonH1121 of Belial,H1100 that [a man] cannot speakH1696(PielInf) to him. [18] Then AbigailH26 made haste,H4116(PielImpf) and tookH3947(QalImpf) two hundredH3967 loaves,H3899 and twoH8147 bottlesH5035 of wine,H3196 and fiveH2568 sheepH6629 ready dressed,H6213(QalPasPtc) and fiveH2568 measuresH5429 of parchedH7039 [corn], and an hundredH3967 clusters of raisins,H6778 and two hundredH3967 cakesH1690 of figs, and laidH7760(QalImpf) [them] on asses.H2543 [19] And she saidH559(QalImpf) unto her servants,H5288 Go onH5674(QalImpv) beforeH6440 me; behold, I comeH935(QalActPtc) afterH310 you. But she toldH5046(HiphPerf) not her husbandH376 Nabal.H5037 [20] And it was [so, as] she rodeH7392(QalActPtc) on the ass,H2543 that she came downH3381(QalActPtc) by the covertH5643 of the hill,H2022 and, behold, DavidH1732 and his menH582 came downH3381(QalActPtc) againstH7125(QalInf) her; and she metH6298(QalImpf) them. [21] Now DavidH1732 had said,H559(QalPerf) Surely in vainH8267 have I keptH8104(QalPerf) all that thisH2088 [fellow] hath in the wilderness,H4057 so that nothingH3972 was missedH6485(NiphPerf) of all that [pertained] unto him: and he hath requitedH7725(HiphImpf) me evilH7451 for good.H2896 [22] SoH3541 and moreH3254(HiphImpf) also doH6213(QalImpf) GodH430 unto the enemiesH341(QalActPtc) of David,H1732 if I leaveH7604(HiphImpf) of all that [pertain] to him byH5704 the morningH1242 lightH216 any that pissethH8366(HiphPtc) against the wall.H7023 [23] And when AbigailH26 sawH7200(QalImpf) David,H1732 she hasted,H4116(PielImpf) and lighted offH3381(QalImpf) the ass,H2543 and fellH5307(QalImpf) beforeH639 DavidH1732 on her face,H6440 and bowedH7812(HithImpf) herself to the ground,H776 [24] And fellH5307(QalImpf) at his feet,H7272 and said,H559(QalImpf) Upon me, my lord,H113 [upon] me [let this] iniquityH5771 [be]: and let thine handmaid,H519 I pray thee, speakH1696(PielImpf) in thine audience,H241 and hearH8085(QalImpv) the wordsH1697 of thine handmaid.H589 [25] LetH7760(QalImpf) not my lord,H113 I pray thee, regardH3820 this manH376 of Belial,H1100 [even] Nabal:H5037 for as his nameH8034 [is], so [is] he; NabalH5037 [is] his name,H8034 and follyH5039 [is] with him: but I thine handmaidH519 sawH7200(QalPerf) not the young menH5288 of my lord,H113 whom thou didst send.H7971(QalPerf) [26] Now therefore, my lord,H113 [as] the LordH3068 liveth,H2416 and [as] thy soulH5315 liveth,H2416 seeing the LordH3068 hath withholdenH4513(QalPerf) thee from comingH935(QalInf) to [shed] blood,H1818 and from avengingH3467(HiphInf) thyself with thine own hand,H3027 now let thine enemies,H341(QalActPtc) and they that seekH1245(PielPtc) evilH7451 to my lord,H113 be as Nabal.H5037 [27] And now this blessingH1293 which thine handmaidH8198 hath broughtH935(HiphPerf) unto my lord,H113 let it even be givenH5414(NiphPerf) unto the young menH5288 that followH1980(HithPtc) my lord.H113 [28] I pray thee, forgiveH5375(QalImpv) the trespassH6588 of thine handmaid:H519 for the LordH3068 will certainlyH6213(QalInf) makeH6213(QalImpf) my lordH113 a sureH539(NiphPtc) house;H1004 because my lordH113 fightethH3898(NiphPtc) the battlesH4421 of the Lord,H3068 and evilH7451 hath not been foundH4672(NiphImpf) in thee [all] thy days.H3117 [29] Yet a manH120 is risenH6965(QalImpf) to pursueH7291(QalInf) thee, and to seekH1245(PielInf) thy soul:H5315 but the soulH5315 of my lordH113 shall be boundH6887(QalPasPtc) in the bundleH6872 of lifeH2416 with the LordH3068 thy God;H430 and the soulsH5315 of thine enemies,H341(QalActPtc) them shall he sling out,H7049(PielImpf) [as out] of the middleH8432 of a sling.H7050 [30] And it shall come to pass, when the LordH3068 shall have doneH6213(QalImpf) to my lordH113 according to all the goodH2896 that he hath spokenH1696(PielPerf) concerning thee, and shall have appointedH6680(PielPerf) thee rulerH5057 over Israel;H3478 [31] That this shall be no griefH6330 unto thee, nor offenceH4383 of heartH3820 unto my lord,H113 either that thou hast shedH8210(QalInf) bloodH1818 causeless,H2600 or that my lordH113 hath avengedH3467(HiphInf) himself: but when the LordH3068 shall have dealt wellH3190(HiphPerf) with my lord,H113 then rememberH2142(QalPerf) thine handmaid.H519 [32] And DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) to Abigail,H26 BlessedH1288(QalPasPtc) [be] the LordH3068 GodH430 of Israel,H3478 which sentH7971(QalPerf) thee this dayH3117 to meetH7125(QalInf) me: [33] And blessedH1288(QalPasPtc) [be] thy advice,H2940 and blessedH1288(QalPasPtc) [be] thou, which hast keptH3607(QalPerf) me this dayH3117 from comingH935(QalInf) to [shed] blood,H1818 and from avengingH3467(HiphInf) myself with mine own hand.H3027 [34] For in very deed,H199 [as] the LordH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 liveth,H2416 which hath kept me backH4513(QalPerf) from hurtingH7489(HiphInf) thee, exceptH3884 thou hadst hastedH4116(PielPerf) and comeH935(QalImpf) to meetH7125(QalInf) me, surely there had not been leftH3498(NiphPerf) unto NabalH5037 by the morningH1242 lightH216 any that pissethH8366(HiphPtc) against the wall.H7023 [35] So DavidH1732 receivedH3947(QalImpf) of her handH3027 [that] which she had broughtH935(HiphPerf) him, and saidH559(QalPerf) unto her, Go upH5927(QalImpv) in peaceH7965 to thine house;H1004 see,H7200(QalImpv) I have hearkenedH8085(QalPerf) to thy voice,H6963 and have acceptedH5375(QalImpf) thy person.H6440 [36] And AbigailH26 cameH935(QalImpf) to Nabal;H5037 and, behold, he held a feastH4960 in his house,H1004 like the feastH4960 of a king;H4428 and Nabal’sH5037 heartH3820 [was] merryH2896 within him, for he [was] veryH3966 drunken:H7910 wherefore she toldH5046(HiphPerf) him nothing,H1697 lessH6996 or more,H1419 until the morningH1242 light.H216 [37] But it came to pass in the morning,H1242 when the wineH3196 was gone outH3318(QalInf) of Nabal,H5037 and his wifeH802 had toldH5046(HiphImpf) him these things,H1697 that his heartH3820 diedH4191(QalImpf) withinH7130 him, and he became [as] a stone.H68 [38] And it came to pass about tenH6235 daysH3117 [after], that the LordH3068 smoteH5062(QalImpf) Nabal,H5037 that he died.H4191(QalImpf) [39] And when DavidH1732 heardH8085(QalImpf) that NabalH5037 was dead,H4191(QalPerf) he said,H559(QalImpf) BlessedH1288(QalPasPtc) [be] the Lord,H3068 that hath pleadedH7378(QalPerf) the causeH7379 of my reproachH2781 from the handH3027 of Nabal,H5037 and hath keptH2820(QalPerf) his servantH5650 from evil:H7451 for the LordH3068 hath returnedH7725(HiphPerf) the wickednessH7451 of NabalH5037 upon his own head.H7218 And DavidH1732 sentH7971(QalImpf) and communedH1696(PielImpf) with Abigail,H26 to takeH3947(QalInf) her to him to wife.H802 [40] And when the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732 were comeH935(QalImpf) to AbigailH26 to Carmel,H3760 they spakeH1696(PielImpf) unto her, saying,H559(QalInf) DavidH1732 sentH7971(QalPerf) us unto thee, to takeH3947(QalInf) thee to him to wife.H802 [41] And she arose,H6965(QalImpf) and bowedH7812(HithImpf) herself on [her] faceH639 to the earth,H776 and said,H559(QalImpf) Behold, [let] thine handmaidH519 [be] a servantH8198 to washH7364(QalInf) the feetH7272 of the servantsH5650 of my lord.H113 [42] And AbigailH26 hasted,H4116(PielImpf) and arose,H6965(QalImpf) and rodeH7392(QalImpf) upon an ass,H2543 with fiveH2568 damselsH5291 of hers that wentH1980(QalActPtc) afterH7272 her; and she wentH3212(QalImpf) afterH310 the messengersH4397 of David,H1732 and became his wife.H802 [43] DavidH1732 also tookH3947(QalPerf) AhinoamH293 of Jezreel;H3157 and they were also bothH8147 of them his wives.H802 [44] But SaulH7586 had givenH5414(QalPerf) MichalH4324 his daughter,H1323 David’sH1732 wife,H802 to PhaltiH6406 the sonH1121 of Laish,H3919 which [was] of Gallim.H1554
