[1] In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. [2] The Lord§ gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God;§ and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god. He brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god. [3] The king spoke to Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in some of the children of Israel, even of the royal offspring§ and of the nobles: [4] youths in whom was no defect, but well-favored, skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding science, and who had the ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans. [5] The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years, that at its end they should stand before the king. [6] Now among these of the children of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. [7] The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego. [8] But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank. Therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. [9] Now God made Daniel find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs. [10] The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink. For why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? Then you would endanger my head with the king.” [11] Then Daniel said to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: [12] “Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. [13] Then let our faces be examined before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s delicacies; and as you see, deal with your servants.” [14] So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. [15] At the end of ten days, their faces appeared fairer and they were fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate of the king’s delicacies. [16] So the steward took away their delicacies and the wine that they were given to drink, and gave them vegetables. [17] Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. [18] At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. [19] The king talked with them; and among them all was found no one like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore stood they before the king. [20] In every matter of wisdom and understanding concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm. [21] Daniel continued even to the first year of King Cyrus.

King James Version
[1] In the thirdH7969 yearH8141 of the reignH4438 of JehoiakimH3079 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 cameH935(QalPerf) NebuchadnezzarH5019 kingH4428 of BabylonH894 unto Jerusalem,H3389 and besiegedH6696(QalImpf) it. [2] And the LordH136 gaveH5414(QalImpf) JehoiakimH3079 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 into his hand,H3027 with partH7117 of the vesselsH3627 of the houseH1004 of God:H430 which he carriedH935(HiphImpf) into the landH776 of ShinarH8152 to the houseH1004 of his god;H430 and he broughtH935(HiphPerf) the vesselsH3627 into the treasureH214 houseH1004 of his god.H430 [3] And the kingH4428 spakeH559(QalImpf) unto AshpenazH828 the masterH7227 of his eunuchs,H5631 that he should bringH935(HiphInf) [certain] of the childrenH1121 of Israel,H3478 and of the king’sH4410 seed,H2233 and of the princes;H6579 [4] ChildrenH3206 in whom [was] no blemish,H3971(Qere) but wellH2896 favoured,H4758 and skilfulH7919(HiphPtc) in all wisdom,H2451 and cunningH3045(QalActPtc) in knowledge,H1847 and understandingH995(HiphPtc) science,H4093 and such as [had] abilityH3581 in them to standH5975(QalInf) in the king’sH4428 palace,H1964 and whom they might teachH3925(PielInf) the learningH5612 and the tongueH3956 of the Chaldeans.H3778 [5] And the kingH4428 appointedH4487(PielImpf) them a dailyH3117 provisionH1697 of the king’sH4428 meat,H6598 and of the wineH3196 which he drank:H4960 so nourishingH1431(PielInf) them threeH7969 years,H8141 that at the endH7117 thereof they might standH5975(QalImpf) beforeH6440 the king.H4428 [6] Now among these were of the childrenH1121 of Judah,H3063 Daniel,H1840 Hananiah,H2608 Mishael,H4332 and Azariah:H5838 [7] Unto whom the princeH8269 of the eunuchsH5631 gaveH7760(QalImpf) names:H8034 for he gaveH7760(QalImpf) unto DanielH1840 [the name] of Belteshazzar;H1095 and to Hananiah,H2608 of Shadrach;H7714 and to Mishael,H4332 of Meshach;H4335 and to Azariah,H5838 of Abednego.H5664 [8] But DanielH1840 purposedH7760(QalImpf) in his heartH3820 that he would not defileH1351(HithImpf) himself with the portionH6598 of the king’sH4428 meat,H6598 nor with the wineH3196 which he drank:H4960 therefore he requestedH1245(PielImpf) of the princeH8269 of the eunuchsH5631 that he might not defileH1351(HithImpf) himself. [9] Now GodH430 had broughtH5414(QalImpf) DanielH1840 into favourH2617 and tender loveH7356 withH6440 the princeH8269 of the eunuchs.H5631 [10] And the princeH8269 of the eunuchsH5631 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Daniel,H1840 I fearH3373 my lordH113 the king,H4428 who hath appointedH4487(PielPerf) your meatH3978 and your drink:H4960 for why should he seeH7200(QalImpf) your facesH6440 worse likingH2196(QalActPtc) than the childrenH3206 which [are] of your sort?H1524 then shall ye make [me] endangerH2325(PielPerf) my headH7218 to the king.H4428 [11] Then saidH559(QalImpf) DanielH1840 to Melzar,H4453 whom the princeH8269 of the eunuchsH5631 had setH4487(PielPerf) over Daniel,H1840 Hananiah,H2608 Mishael,H4332 and Azariah,H5838 [12] ProveH5254(PielImpv) thy servants,H5650 I beseech thee, tenH6235 days;H3117 and let them giveH5414(QalImpf) us pulseH2235 to eat,H398(QalImpf) and waterH4325 to drink.H8354(QalImpf) [13] Then let our countenancesH4758 be looked uponH7200(NiphImpf) beforeH6440 thee, and the countenanceH4758 of the childrenH3206 that eatH398(QalActPtc) of the portionH6598 of the king’sH4428 meat:H6598 and as thou seest,H7200(QalImpf) dealH6213(QalImpv) with thy servants.H5650 [14] So he consentedH8085(QalImpf) to them in this matter,H1697 and provedH5254(PielImpf) them tenH6235 days.H3117 [15] And at the endH7117 of tenH6235 daysH3117 their countenancesH4758 appearedH7200(NiphPerf) fairerH2896 and fatterH1277 in fleshH1320 than all the childrenH3206 which did eatH398(QalActPtc) the portionH6598 of the king’sH4428 meat.H6598 [16] Thus MelzarH4453 took awayH5375(QalActPtc) the portion of their meat,H6598 and the wineH3196 that they should drink;H4960 and gaveH5414(QalActPtc) them pulse.H2235 [17] As for these fourH702 children,H3206 GodH430 gaveH5414(QalPerf) them knowledgeH4093 and skillH7919(HiphInf) in all learningH5612 and wisdom:H2451 and DanielH1840 had understandingH995(HiphPerf) in all visionsH2377 and dreams.H2472 [18] Now at the endH7117 of the daysH3117 that the kingH4428 had saidH559(QalPerf) he should bringH935(HiphInf) them in, then the princeH8269 of the eunuchsH5631 broughtH935(HiphImpf) them in beforeH6440 Nebuchadnezzar.H5019 [19] And the kingH4428 communedH1696(PielImpf) with them; and among them all was foundH4672(NiphPerf) none like Daniel,H1840 Hananiah,H2608 Mishael,H4332 and Azariah:H5838 therefore stoodH5975(QalImpf) they beforeH6440 the king.H4428 [20] And in all mattersH1697 of wisdomH2451 [and] understanding,H998 that the kingH4428 enquiredH1245(PielPerf) of them, he foundH4672(QalImpf) them ten timesH6235 betterH3027 than all the magiciansH2748 [and] astrologersH825 that [were] in all his realm.H4438 [21] And DanielH1840 continued [even] unto the firstH259 yearH8141 of kingH4428 Cyrus.H3566
