[1] In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, a vision appeared to me, even to me, Daniel, after that which appeared to me at the first. [2] I saw the vision. Now it was so, that when I saw, I was in the citadel of Susa, which is in the province of Elam. I saw in the vision, and I was by the river Ulai. [3] Then I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, a ram which had two horns stood before the river. The two horns were high, but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. [4] I saw the ram pushing westward, northward, and southward. No animals could stand before him. There wasn’t any who could deliver out of his hand, but he did according to his will, and magnified himself. [5] As I was considering, behold, a male goat came from the west over the surface of the whole earth, and didn’t touch the ground. The goat had a notable horn between his eyes. [6] He came to the ram that had the two horns, which I saw standing before the river, and ran on him in the fury of his power. [7] I saw him come close to the ram, and he was moved with anger against him, and struck the ram, and broke his two horns. There was no power in the ram to stand before him; but he cast him down to the ground and trampled on him. There was no one who could deliver the ram out of his hand. [8] The male goat magnified himself exceedingly. When he was strong, the great horn was broken; and instead of it there came up four notable horns toward the four winds of the sky. [9] Out of one of them came out a little horn which grew exceedingly great—toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the glorious land. [10] It grew great, even to the army of the sky; and it cast down some of the army and of the stars to the ground and trampled on them. [11] Yes, it magnified itself, even to the prince of the army; and it took away from him the continual burnt offering, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. [12] The army was given over to it together with the continual burnt offering through disobedience. It cast down truth to the ground, and it did its pleasure and prospered. [13] Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said to that certain one who spoke, “How long will the vision about the continual burnt offering, and the disobedience that makes desolate, to give both the sanctuary and the army to be trodden under foot be?” [14] He said to me, “To two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary will be cleansed.” [15] When I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it. Then behold, there stood before me someone with the appearance of a man. [16] I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, which called and said, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.” [17] So he came near where I stood; and when he came, I was frightened, and fell on my face; but he said to me, “Understand, son of man, for the vision belongs to the time of the end.” [18] Now as he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep with my face toward the ground; but he touched me and set me upright. [19] He said, “Behold, I will make you know what will be in the latter time of the indignation, for it belongs to the appointed time of the end. [20] The ram which you saw, that had the two horns, they are the kings of Media and Persia. [21] The rough male goat is the king of Greece. The great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. [22] As for that which was broken, in the place where four stood up, four kingdoms will stand up out of the nation, but not with his power. [23] “In the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors have come to the full, a king of fierce face, and understanding riddles, will stand up. [24] His power will be mighty, but not by his own power. He will destroy awesomely, and will prosper in what he does. He will destroy the mighty ones and the holy people. [25] Through his policy he will cause deceit to prosper in his hand. He will magnify himself in his heart, and he will destroy many in their security. He will also stand up against the prince of princes, but he will be broken without human hands. [26] “The vision of the evenings and mornings which has been told is true; but seal up the vision, for it belongs to many days to come.” [27] I, Daniel, fainted, and was sick for some days. Then I rose up and did the king’s business. I wondered at the vision, but no one understood it.

A Ram and Goat

[1] In the third H7969 year H8141 of the reign H4438 of king H4428 Belshazzar H1112 a vision H2377 appeared H7200 (NiphPerf) unto me, even unto me Daniel, H1840 after H310 that which appeared H7200 (NiphPerf) unto me at the first. H8462 [2] And I saw H7200 (QalImpf) in a vision; H2377 and it came to pass, when I saw, H7200 (QalInf) that I was at Shushan H7800 in the palace, H1002 which is in the province H4082 of Elam; H5867 and I saw H7200 (QalImpf) in a vision, H2377 and I was by the river H180 of Ulai. H195 [3] Then I lifted up H5375 (QalImpf) mine eyes, H5869 and saw, H7200 (QalImpf) and, behold, there stood H5975 (QalActPtc) before H6440 the river H180 a H259 ram H352 which had two horns: H7161 and the two horns H7161 were high; H1364 but one H259 was higher H1364 than the other, H8145§ and the higher H1364 came up H5927 (QalActPtc) last. H314 [4] I saw H7200 (QalPerf) the ram H352 pushing H5055 (PielPtc) westward, H3220 and northward, H6828 and southward; H5045 so that no beasts H2416 might stand H5975 (QalImpf) before H6440 him, neither was there any that could deliver H5337 (HiphPtc) out of his hand; H3027 but he did H6213 (QalPerf) according to his will, H7522 and became great. H1431 (HiphPerf) [5] And as I was considering, H995 (HiphPtc) behold, an he H5795 goat H6842 came H935 (QalActPtc) from the west H4628 on the face H6440 of the whole earth, H776 and touched H5060 (QalActPtc) not the ground: H776§ and the goat H6842 had a notable H2380 horn H7161§ between his eyes. H4823 [14] And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto me, Unto two thousand H505 and three H7969 hundred H3967 days; H6153§ then shall the sanctuary H6944 be cleansed. H6663 (NiphPerf)§ [15] And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, H1840 had seen H7200 (QalInf) the vision, H2377 and sought H1245 (PielImpf) for the meaning, H998 then, behold, there stood H5975 (QalActPtc) before me as the appearance H4758 of a man. H4758 [17] So he came H935 (QalImpf) near H681 where I stood: H5977 and when he came, H935 (QalInf) I was afraid, H1204 (NiphPerf) and fell H5307 (QalImpf) upon my face: H6440 but he said H559 (QalImpf) unto me, Understand, H995 (HiphImpv) O son H1121 of man: H120 for at the time H6256 of the end H7093 shall be the vision. H2377 [18] Now as he was speaking H1696 (PielInf) with me, I was in a deep sleep H7290 (NiphPerf) on my face H6440 toward the ground: H776 but he touched H5060 (QalImpf) me, and set H5975 (HiphImpf) me upright. H5977§ [19] And he said, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, I will make thee know H3045 (HiphPtc) what shall be in the last end H319 of the indignation: H2195 for at the time appointed H4150 the end H7093 shall be. [20] The ram H352 which thou sawest H7200 (QalPerf) having H1167 two horns H7161 are the kings H4428 of Media H4074 and Persia. H6539 [21] And the rough H8163 goat H6842 is the king H4428 of Grecia: H3120 and the great H1419 horn H7161 that is between his eyes H5869 is the first H7223 king. H4428 [22] Now that being broken, H7665 (NiphPtc) whereas four H702 stood up H5975 (QalImpf) for it, four H702 kingdoms H4438 shall stand up H5975 (QalImpf) out of the nation, H1471 but not in his power. H3581 [23] And in the latter time H319 of their kingdom, H4438 when the transgressors H6586 (QalActPtc) are come to the full, H8552 (HiphInf)§ a king H4428 of fierce H5794 countenance, H6440 and understanding H995 (HiphPtc) dark sentences, H2420 shall stand up. H5975 (QalImpf) [24] And his power H3581 shall be mighty, H6105 (QalPerf) but not by his own power: H3581 and he shall destroy H7843 (HiphImpf) wonderfully, H6381 (NiphPtc) and shall prosper, H6743 (HiphPerf) and practise, H6213 (QalPerf) and shall destroy H7843 (HiphPerf) the mighty H6099 and the holy H6918 people. H5971§ [25] And through his policy H7922 also he shall cause craft H4820 to prosper H6743 (HiphPerf) in his hand; H3027 and he shall magnify H1431 (HiphImpf) himself in his heart, H3824 and by peace H7962§ shall destroy H7843 (HiphImpf) many: H7227 he shall also stand up H5975 (QalImpf) against the Prince H8269 of princes; H8269 but he shall be broken H7665 (NiphImpf) without H657 hand. H3027 [26] And the vision H4758 of the evening H6153 and the morning H1242 which was told H559 (NiphPerf) is true: H571 wherefore shut thou up H5640 (QalImpv) the vision; H2377 for it shall be for many H7227 days. H3117 [27] And I Daniel H1840 fainted, H1961 (NiphPerf) and was sick H2470 (NiphPerf) certain days; H3117 afterward I rose up, H6965 (QalImpf) and did H6213 (QalImpf) the king’s H4428 business; H4399 and I was astonished H8074 (HiplImpf) at the vision, H4758 but none understood H995 (HiphPtc) it.
