[1] Nebuchadnezzar the king, [2] It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked toward me.
[3] How great are his signs!
How mighty are his wonders!
His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.
His dominion is from generation to generation.
[4] I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace. [5] I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. [6] Therefore I made a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. [7] Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in; and I told them the dream, but they didn’t make known to me its interpretation. [8] But at last, Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. I told the dream before him, saying, [9] “Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation. [10] These were the visions of my head on my bed: I saw, and behold, a tree in the middle of the earth; and its height was great. [11] The tree grew and was strong. Its height reached to the sky and its sight to the end of all the earth. [12] Its leaves were beautiful, and it had much fruit, and in it was food for all. The animals of the field had shade under it, and the birds of the sky lived in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it. [13] “I saw in the visions of my head on my bed, and behold, a holy watcher came down from the sky. [14] He cried aloud and said this: ‘Cut down the tree, and cut off its branches! Shake off its leaves and scatter its fruit! Let the animals get away from under it and the birds from its branches. [15] Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of the sky. Let his portion be with the animals in the grass of the earth. [16] Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let an animal’s heart be given to him. Then let seven times pass over him. [17] “ ‘The sentence is by the decree of the watchers and the demand by the word of the holy ones, to the intent that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will, and sets up over it the lowest of men.’ [18] “This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and you, Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.” [19] Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken mute for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered, “Belteshazzar, don’t let the dream or the interpretation, trouble you.” [20] The tree that you saw, which grew and was strong, whose height reached to the sky and its sight to all the earth; [21] whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit plentiful, and in it was food for all; under which the animals of the field lived, and on whose branches the birds of the sky had their habitation— [22] it is you, O king, that have grown and become strong; for your greatness has grown, and reaches to the sky, and your dominion to the end of the earth. [23] “Whereas the king saw a holy watcher coming down from the sky and saying, ‘Cut down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of the sky. Let his portion be with the animals of the field, until seven times pass over him.’ [24] “This is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which has come on my lord the king: [25] You will be driven from men and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You will be made to eat grass as oxen, and will be wet with the dew of the sky, and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will. [26] Whereas it was commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be sure to you after you know that Heavens rules. [27] Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your tranquility.” [28] All this came on the King Nebuchadnezzar. [29] At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon. [30] The king spoke and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling place by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?” [31] While the word was in the king’s mouth, a voice came from the sky, saying, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: ‘The kingdom has departed from you. [32] You shall be driven from men, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You shall be made to eat grass like oxen. Seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.’ ” [33] This was fulfilled the same hour on Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; and his body was wet with the dew of the sky until his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws. [34] At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives forever,
for his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
and his kingdom from generation to generation.
[35] All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing;
and he does according to his will in the army of heaven,
and among the inhabitants of the earth;
and no one can stop his hand,
or ask him, “What are you doing?”
[36] At the same time my understanding returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added to me. [37] Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those who walk in pride he is able to abase.
King James Version
[1] NebuchadnezzarH5020 the king,H4430 unto allH3606 people,H5972 nations,H524 and languages,H3961 that dwellH1753(PealImpf) in allH3606 the earth;H772 PeaceH8001 be multipliedH7680(PealImpf) unto you. [2] I thoughtH6925 it goodH8232(PealPerf) to shewH2324(AphInf) the signsH852 and wondersH8540 that the highH5943 GodH426 hath wroughtH5648(PealPerf) towardH5974 me. [3] HowH4101 greatH7260 [are] his signs!H852 and howH4101 mightyH8624 [are] his wonders!H8540 his kingdomH4437 [is] an everlastingH5957 kingdom,H4437 and his dominionH7985 [is] fromH5974 generationH1859 to generation.H1859 [4] IH576 NebuchadnezzarH5020 wasH1934(PealPerf) at restH7954(PealPasPtc) in mine house,H1005 and flourishingH7487 in my palace:H1965 [5] I sawH2370(PealPerf) a dreamH2493 which made me afraid,H1763(PaelImpf) and the thoughtsH2031 uponH5922 my bedH4903 and the visionsH2376 of my headH7217 troubledH927(PualImpf) me. [6] ThereforeH4481 madeH7761(PealPasPtc) IH4481 a decreeH2942 to bringH5954(AphInf) in allH3606 the wiseH2445 [men] of BabylonH895 beforeH6925 me, that they might make knownH3046(AphImpf) unto me the interpretationH6591 of the dream.H2493 [7] ThenH116 cameH5954(PealPtc) in the magicians,H2749 the astrologers,H826 the Chaldeans,H3779 and the soothsayers:H1505(PealPtc) and IH576 toldH560(PealPtc) the dreamH2493 beforeH6925 them; but they did notH3809 make knownH3046(AphPtc) unto me the interpretationH6591 thereof. [8] But atH5705 the lastH318 DanielH1841 came inH5922 before me,H6925 whose nameH8036 [was] Belteshazzar,H1096 according to the nameH8036 of my god,H426 and in whom [is] the spiritH7308 of the holyH6922 gods:H426 and beforeH6925 him I toldH560(PealPerf) the dream,H2493 [saying], [9] O Belteshazzar,H1096 masterH7229 of the magicians,H2749 because IH576 knowH3046(PealPerf) that the spiritH7308 of the holyH6922 godsH426 [is] in thee, and noH3606 secretH7328 troublethH598(PealPtc) thee, tellH560(PealImpv) me the visionsH2376 of my dreamH2493 that I have seen,H2370(PealPerf) and the interpretationH6591 thereof. [10] Thus [were] the visionsH2376 of mine headH7217 inH5922 my bed;H4903 I saw,H1934(PealPerf) and beholdH431 a treeH363 in the midstH1459 of the earth,H772 and the heightH7314 thereof [was] great.H7690 [11] The treeH363 grew,H7236(PealPerf) and was strong,H8631(PealPerf) and the heightH7314 thereof reachedH4291(PealImpf) unto heaven,H8065 and the sightH2379 thereof to the endH5491 of allH3606 the earth:H772 [12] The leavesH6074 thereof [were] fair,H8209 and the fruitH4 thereof much,H7690 and in it [was] meatH4203 for all:H3606 the beastsH2423 of the fieldH1251 had shadowH2927(AphImpf) underH8460 it, and the fowlsH6853 of the heavenH8065 dweltH1753(PealImpf) in the boughsH6056 thereof, and allH3606 fleshH1321 was fedH2110(ItplImpf) of it.H4481 [13] I sawH1934(PealPerf) in the visionsH2376 of my headH7217 uponH5922 my bed,H4903 and, behold,H431 a watcherH5894 and an holy oneH6922 came downH5182(PealPtc) fromH4481 heaven;H8065 [14] He criedH7123(PealActPtc) aloud,H2429 and saidH560(PealPtc) thus,H3652 Hew downH1414 the tree,H363 and cut offH7113(PaelPerf) his branches,H6056 shake offH5426(AphImpv) his leaves,H6074 and scatterH921(PaelPerf) his fruit:H4 let the beastsH2423 get awayH5111(PealImpf) fromH4481 under it,H8479 and the fowlsH6853 fromH4481 his branches:H6056 [15] NeverthelessH1297 leaveH7662(PealImpv) the stumpH6136 of his rootsH8330 in the earth,H772 even with a bandH613 of ironH6523 and brass,H5174 in the tender grassH1883 of the field;H1251 and let it be wetH6647(ItpaImpf) with the dewH2920 of heaven,H8065 and [let] his portionH2508 [be] withH5974 the beastsH2423 in the grassH6211 of the earth:H772 [16] Let his heartH3825 be changedH8133(PaelImpf) fromH4481 man’s,H606 and let a beast’sH2423 heartH3825 be givenH3052(ItpeImpf) unto him; and let sevenH7655 timesH5732 passH2499 overH5922 him. [17] This matterH6600 [is] by the decreeH1510 of the watchers,H5894 and the demandH7595 by the wordH3983 of the holy ones:H6922 toH5705 the intentH1701 that the livingH2417 may knowH3046(PealImpf) that the most HighH5943 rulethH7990 in the kingdomH4437 of men,H606 and givethH5415(PealImpf) it to whomsoeverH4479 he will,H6634(PealImpf) and setteth upH6966(AphImpf) overH5922 it the basestH8215 of men.H606 [18] ThisH1836 dreamH2493 IH576 kingH4430 NebuchadnezzarH5020 have seen.H2370(PealPerf) Now thou,H607 O Belteshazzar,H1096 declareH560(PealImpv) the interpretationH6591 thereof, forasmuch asH6903 allH3606 the wiseH2445 [men] of my kingdomH4437 are notH3809 ableH3202(PealPtc) to make knownH3046(AphInf) unto me the interpretation:H6591 but thouH607 [art] able;H3546(PealActPtc) for the spiritH7308 of the holyH6922 godsH426 [is] in thee. [19] ThenH116 Daniel,H1841 whose nameH8036 [was] Belteshazzar,H1096 was astoniedH8075(ItpoImpf) for oneH2298 hour,H8160 and his thoughtsH7476 troubledH927(PualImpf) him. The kingH4430 spake,H6032(PealPtc) and said,H560(PealPtc) Belteshazzar,H1096 let notH409 the dream,H2493 or the interpretationH6591 thereof, troubleH927(PualImpf) thee. BelteshazzarH1096 answeredH6032(PealPtc) and said,H560(PealPtc) My lord,H4756 the dreamH2493 [be] to them that hateH8131(PealPtc) thee, and the interpretationH6591 thereof to thine enemies.H6146 [20] The treeH363 that thou sawest,H2370(PealPerf) which grew,H7236(PealPerf) and was strong,H8631(PealPerf) whose heightH7314 reachedH4291(PealImpf) unto the heaven,H8065 and the sightH2379 thereof to allH3606 the earth;H772 [21] Whose leavesH6074 [were] fair,H8209 and the fruitH4 thereof much,H7690 and in it [was] meatH4203 for all;H3606 underH8460 which the beastsH2423 of the fieldH1251 dwelt,H1753(PealImpf) and upon whose branchesH6056 the fowlsH6853 of the heavenH8065 had their habitation:H7932(PealImpf) [22] It [is] thou,H607 O king,H4430 that art grownH7236(PealPerf) and become strong:H8631(PealImpf) for thy greatnessH7238 is grown,H7236(PealPerf) and reachethH4291(PealPerf) unto heaven,H8065 and thy dominionH7985 to the endH5491 of the earth.H772 [23] And whereas the kingH4430 sawH2370(PealPerf) a watcherH5894 and an holy oneH6922 coming downH5182(PealPtc) fromH4481 heaven,H8065 and saying,H560(PealPtc) HewH1414 the treeH363 down,H1414 and destroyH2255(PaelImpv) it; yetH1297 leaveH7662(PealImpv) the stumpH6136 of the rootsH8330 thereof in the earth,H772 even with a bandH613 of ironH6523 and brass,H5174 in the tender grassH1883 of the field;H1251 and let it be wetH6647(ItpaImpf) with the dewH2920 of heaven,H8065 and [let] his portionH2508 [be] withH5974 the beastsH2423 of the field,H1251 tillH5705 sevenH7655 timesH5732 passH2499 overH5922 him; [24] ThisH1836 [is] the interpretation,H6591 O king,H4430 and thisH1932 [is] the decreeH1510 of the most High,H5943 which is comeH4291(PealPerf) uponH5922 my lordH4756 the king:H4430 [25] That they shall driveH2957(PealActPtc) thee fromH4481 men,H606 and thy dwellingH4070 shall beH1934(PealImpf) withH5974 the beastsH2423 of the field,H1251 and they shall make thee to eatH2939(PealImpf) grassH6211 as oxen,H8450 and they shall wetH6647(PaelPtc) thee with the dewH2920 of heaven,H8065 and sevenH7655 timesH5732 shall passH2499 overH5922 thee, tillH5705 thou knowH3046(PealImpf) that the most HighH5943 rulethH7990 in the kingdomH4437 of men,H606 and givethH5415(PealImpf) it to whomsoeverH4479 he will.H6634(PealImpf) [26] And whereas they commandedH560(PealPerf) to leaveH7662(PealInf) the stumpH6136 of the treeH363 roots;H8330 thy kingdomH4437 shall be sureH7011 unto thee, afterH4481 that thou shalt have knownH3046(PealImpf) that the heavensH8065 do rule.H7990 [27] Wherefore,H3861 O king,H4430 let my counselH4431 be acceptableH8232(PealImpf) unto thee,H5922 and break offH6562(PealImpv) thy sinsH2408 by righteousness,H6665 and thine iniquitiesH5758 by shewing mercyH2604(PealInf) to the poor;H6033(PealPtc) ifH2006 it may beH1934(PealImpf) a lengtheningH754 of thy tranquillity.H7963 [28] AllH3606 this cameH4291(PealPerf) uponH5922 the kingH4430 Nebuchadnezzar.H5020 [29] At the endH7118 of twelveH8648 monthsH3393 he walkedH1934(PealPerf) inH5922 the palaceH1965 of the kingdomH4437 of Babylon.H895 [30] The kingH4430 spake,H6032(PealPtc) and said,H560(PealPtc) Is notH3809 thisH1932 greatH7229 Babylon,H895 that IH576 have builtH1124(PealPerf) for the houseH1005 of the kingdomH4437 by the mightH8632 of my power,H2632 and for the honourH3367 of my majesty?H1923 [31] WhileH5751 the wordH4406 [was] in the king’sH4430 mouth,H6433 there fellH5308(PealPerf) a voiceH7032 fromH4481 heaven,H8065 [saying], O kingH4430 Nebuchadnezzar,H5020 to thee it is spoken;H560(PealPtc) The kingdomH4437 is departedH5709(PealPerf) fromH4481 thee. [32] And they shall driveH2957(PealActPtc) thee fromH4481 men,H606 and thy dwellingH4070 [shall be] withH5974 the beastsH2423 of the field:H1251 they shall make thee to eatH2939(PealImpf) grassH6211 as oxen,H8450 and sevenH7655 timesH5732 shall passH2499 overH5922 thee, untilH5705 thou knowH3046(PealImpf) that the most HighH5943 rulethH7990 in the kingdomH4437 of men,H606 and givethH5415(PealImpf) it to whomsoeverH4479 he will.H6634(PealImpf) [33] The same hourH8160 was the thingH4406 fulfilledH5487(PealPerf) uponH5922 Nebuchadnezzar:H5020 and he was drivenH2957(PealPasPtc) fromH4481 men,H606 and did eatH399(PealImpf) grassH6211 as oxen,H8450 and his bodyH1655 was wetH6647(ItpaImpf) with the dewH2920 of heaven,H8065 tillH5705 his hairsH8177 were grownH7236(PealPerf) like eagles’H5403 [feathers], and his nailsH2953 like birds’H6853 [claws]. [34] And at the endH7118 of the daysH3118 IH576 NebuchadnezzarH5020 lifted upH5191(PealPerf) mine eyesH5870 unto heaven,H8065 and mine understandingH4486 returnedH8421(PealImpf) unto me,H5922 and I blessedH1289(PaelPerf) the most High,H5943 and I praisedH7624(PaelPerf) and honouredH1922(PaelPerf) him that livethH2417 for ever,H5957 whose dominionH7985 [is] an everlastingH5957 dominion,H7985 and his kingdomH4437 [is] fromH5974 generationH1859 to generation:H1859 [35] And allH3606 the inhabitantsH1753(PealImpf) of the earthH772 [are] reputedH2804(PealPasPtc) as nothing:H3809 and he doethH5648(PealActPtc) according to his willH6634(PealInf) in the armyH2429 of heaven,H8065 and [among] the inhabitantsH1753(PealImpf) of the earth:H772 and noneH3809 canH383 stayH4223(PaelImpf) his hand,H3028 or sayH560(PealImpf) unto him, WhatH4101 doestH5648(PealPerf) thou? [36] At the same timeH2166 my reasonH4486 returnedH8421(PealImpf) unto me;H5922 and for the gloryH3367 of my kingdom,H4437 mine honourH1923 and brightnessH2122 returnedH8421(PealImpf) unto me;H5922 and my counsellorsH1907 and my lordsH7261 soughtH1156(PealImpf) unto me;H5922 and I was establishedH8627(HophPerf) in my kingdom,H4437 and excellentH3493 majestyH7238 was addedH3255(HophPerf) unto me. [37] NowH3705 IH576 NebuchadnezzarH5020 praiseH7624(PaelPtc) and extolH7313(PealActPtc) and honourH1922(PaelPtc) the KingH4430 of heaven,H8065 allH3606 whose worksH4567 [are] truth,H7187 and his waysH735 judgment:H1780 and those that walkH1981(AphPtc) in prideH1467 he is ableH3202(PealPtc) to abase.H8214(AphInf)
