[1] “Say to your brothers, ‘My people!’§
and to your sisters, ‘My loved one!’§
[2] Contend with your mother!
Contend, for she is not my wife,
neither am I her husband;
and let her put away her prostitution from her face,
and her adulteries from between her breasts;
[3] lest I strip her naked,
and make her bare as in the day that she was born,
and make her like a wilderness,
and set her like a dry land,
and kill her with thirst.
[4] Indeed, on her children I will have no mercy,
for they are children of unfaithfulness.
[5] For their mother has played the prostitute.
She who conceived them has done shamefully;
for she said, ‘I will go after my lovers,
who give me my bread and my water,
my wool and my flax,
my oil and my drink.’
[6] Therefore behold,§ I will hedge up your way with thorns,
and I will build a wall against her,
that she can’t find her way.
[7] She will follow after her lovers,
but she won’t overtake them;
and she will seek them,
but won’t find them.
Then she will say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband,
for then it was better with me than now.’
[8] For she didn’t know that I gave her the grain, the new wine, and the oil,
and multiplied to her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.
[9] Therefore I will take back my grain in its time,
and my new wine in its season,
and will pluck away my wool and my flax which should have covered her nakedness.
[10] Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers,
and no one will deliver her out of my hand.
[11] I will also cause all her celebrations to cease:
her feasts, her new moons, her Sabbaths, and all her solemn assemblies.
[12] I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees,
about which she has said, ‘These are my wages that my lovers have given me,’
and I will make them a forest,
and the animals of the field shall eat them.
[13] I will visit on her the days of the Baals,
to which she burned incense
when she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels,
and went after her lovers
and forgot me,” says Yahweh.
[14] “Therefore behold, I will allure her,
and bring her into the wilderness,
and speak tenderly to her.
[15] I will give her vineyards from there,
and the valley of Achor for a door of hope;
and she will respond there
as in the days of her youth,
and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.
[16] It will be in that day,” says Yahweh,
“that you will call me ‘my husband,’
and no longer call me ‘my master.’
[17] For I will take away the names of the Baals out of her mouth,
and they will no longer be mentioned by name.
[18] In that day I will make a covenant for them with the animals of the field,
and with the birds of the sky,
and with the creeping things of the ground.
I will break the bow, the sword, and the battle out of the land,
and will make them lie down safely.
[19] I will betroth you to me forever.
Yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness, in justice, in loving kindness, and in compassion.
[20] I will even betroth you to me in faithfulness;
and you shall know Yahweh.
[21] It will happen in that day, that I will respond,” says Yahweh.
“I will respond to the heavens,
and they will respond to the earth;
[22] and the earth will respond to the grain, and the new wine, and the oil;
and they will respond to Jezreel.
[23] I will sow her to me in the earth;
and I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy;
and I will tell those who were not my people, ‘You are my people;’
and they will say, ‘You are My God!’ ”

[1] SayH559(QalImpv) ye unto your brethren,H251 Ammi;H5971 and to your sisters,H269 Ruhamah.H7355(PualPerf) [2] PleadH7378(QalImpv) with your mother,H517 plead:H7378(QalImpv) for she [is] not my wife,H802 neither [am] I her husband:H376 let her therefore put awayH5493(HiphImpf) her whoredomsH2183 out of her sight,H6440 and her adulteriesH5005 from between her breasts;H7699 [3] Lest I stripH6584(HiphImpf) her naked,H6174 and setH3322(HiphPerf) her as in the dayH3117 that she was born,H3205(NiphInf) and makeH7760(QalPerf) her as a wilderness,H4057 and setH7896(QalPerf) her like a dryH6723 land,H776 and slayH4191(HiphPerf) her with thirst.H6772 [4] And I will not have mercyH7355(PielImpf) upon her children;H1121 for they [be] the childrenH1121 of whoredoms.H2183 [5] For their motherH517 hath played the harlot:H2181(QalPerf) she that conceivedH2029(QalActPtc) them hath done shamefully:H3001(HiphPerf) for she said,H559(QalPerf) I will goH3212(QalImpf) afterH310 my lovers,H157(PielPtc) that giveH5414(QalActPtc) [me] my breadH3899 and my water,H4325 my woolH6785 and my flax,H6593 mine oilH8081 and my drink.H8250 [6] Therefore, behold, I will hedgeH7753(QalPtc) up thy wayH1870 with thorns,H5518 and makeH1443(QalPerf) a wall,H1447 that she shall not findH4672(QalImpf) her paths.H5410 [7] And she shall followH7291(PielPerf) after her lovers,H157(PielPtc) but she shall not overtakeH5381(HiphImpf) them; and she shall seekH1245(PielPerf) them, but shall not findH4672(QalImpf) [them]: then shall she say,H559(QalPerf) I will goH3212(QalImpf) and returnH7725(QalImpf) to my firstH7223 husband;H376 for then [was it] betterH2896 with me than now.H6258 [8] For she did not knowH3045(QalPerf) that I gaveH5414(QalPerf) her corn,H1715 and wine,H8492 and oil,H3323 and multipliedH7235(HiphPerf) her silverH3701 and gold,H2091 [which] they preparedH6213(QalPerf) for Baal.H1168 [9] Therefore will I return,H7725(QalImpf) and take awayH3947(QalPerf) my cornH1715 in the timeH6256 thereof, and my wineH8492 in the seasonH4150 thereof, and will recoverH5337(HiphPerf) my woolH6785 and my flaxH6593 [given] to coverH3680(PielInf) her nakedness.H6172 [10] And now will I discoverH1540(PielImpf) her lewdnessH5040 in the sightH5869 of her lovers,H157(PielPtc) and noneH376 shall deliverH5337(HiphImpf) her out of mine hand.H3027 [11] I will also cause all her mirthH4885 to cease,H7673(HiphPerf) her feast days,H2282 her new moons,H2320 and her sabbaths,H7676 and all her solemn feasts.H4150 [12] And I will destroyH8074(HiphPerf) her vinesH1612 and her fig trees,H8384 whereof she hath said,H559(QalPerf) These [are] my rewardsH866 that my loversH157(PielPtc) have givenH5414(QalPerf) me: and I will makeH7760(QalPerf) them a forest,H3293 and the beastsH2416 of the fieldH7704 shall eatH398(QalPerf) them. [13] And I will visitH6485(QalPerf) upon her the daysH3117 of Baalim,H1168 wherein she burned incenseH6999(HiphImpf) to them, and she deckedH5710(QalImpf) herself with her earringsH5141 and her jewels,H2484 and she wentH3212(QalImpf) afterH310 her lovers,H157(PielPtc) and forgatH7911(QalPerf) me, saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord.H3068 [14] Therefore, behold, I will allureH6601(PielPtc) her, and bringH3212(HiphPerf) her into the wilderness,H4057 and speakH1696(PielPerf) comfortablyH3820 unto her. [15] And I will giveH5414(QalPerf) her her vineyardsH3754 from thence, and the valleyH6010 of AchorH5911 for a doorH6607 of hope:H8615 and she shall singH6030(QalPerf) there, as in the daysH3117 of her youth,H5271 and as in the dayH3117 when she came upH5927(QalInf) out of the landH776 of Egypt.H4714 [16] And it shall be at that day,H3117 saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord,H3068 [that] thou shalt callH7121(QalImpf) me Ishi;H376 and shalt callH7121(QalImpf) me no more Baali.H1180 [17] For I will take awayH5493(HiphPerf) the namesH8034 of BaalimH1168 out of her mouth,H6310 and they shall no more be rememberedH2142(NiphImpf) by their name.H8034 [18] And in that dayH3117 will I makeH3772(QalPerf) a covenantH1285 for them with the beastsH2416 of the field,H7704 and with the fowlsH5775 of heaven,H8064 and [with] the creeping thingsH7431 of the ground:H127 and I will breakH7665(QalImpf) the bowH7198 and the swordH2719 and the battleH4421 out of the earth,H776 and will make them to lie downH7901(HiphPerf) safely.H983 [19] And I will betrothH781(PielPerf) thee unto me for ever;H5769 yea, I will betrothH781(PielPerf) thee unto me in righteousness,H6664 and in judgment,H4941 and in lovingkindness,H2617 and in mercies.H7356 [20] I will even betrothH781(PielPerf) thee unto me in faithfulness:H530 and thou shalt knowH3045(QalPerf) the Lord.H3068 [21] And it shall come to pass in that day,H3117 I will hear,H6030(QalImpf) saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord,H3068 I will hearH6030(QalImpf) the heavens,H8064 and they shall hearH6030(QalImpf) the earth;H776 [22] And the earthH776 shall hearH6030(QalImpf) the corn,H1715 and the wine,H8492 and the oil;H3323 and they shall hearH6030(QalImpf) Jezreel.H3157 [23] And I will sowH2232(QalPerf) her unto me in the earth;H776 and I will have mercyH7355(PielPerf) upon her that had not obtained mercy;H7355(PualPerf/QK) and I will sayH559(QalPerf) to [them which were] not my people,H5971 Thou [art] my people;H5971 and they shall say,H559(QalImpf) [Thou art] my God.H430
