[1] “Say to your brothers, ‘My people!’§
and to your sisters, ‘My loved one!’§
[2] Contend with your mother!
Contend, for she is not my wife,
neither am I her husband;
and let her put away her prostitution from her face,
and her adulteries from between her breasts;
[3] lest I strip her naked,
and make her bare as in the day that she was born,
and make her like a wilderness,
and set her like a dry land,
and kill her with thirst.
[4] Indeed, on her children I will have no mercy,
for they are children of unfaithfulness.
[5] For their mother has played the prostitute.
She who conceived them has done shamefully;
for she said, ‘I will go after my lovers,
who give me my bread and my water,
my wool and my flax,
my oil and my drink.’
[6] Therefore behold,§ I will hedge up your way with thorns,
and I will build a wall against her,
that she can’t find her way.
[7] She will follow after her lovers,
but she won’t overtake them;
and she will seek them,
but won’t find them.
Then she will say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband,
for then it was better with me than now.’
[8] For she didn’t know that I gave her the grain, the new wine, and the oil,
and multiplied to her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.
[9] Therefore I will take back my grain in its time,
and my new wine in its season,
and will pluck away my wool and my flax which should have covered her nakedness.
[10] Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers,
and no one will deliver her out of my hand.
[11] I will also cause all her celebrations to cease:
her feasts, her new moons, her Sabbaths, and all her solemn assemblies.
[12] I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees,
about which she has said, ‘These are my wages that my lovers have given me,’
and I will make them a forest,
and the animals of the field shall eat them.
[13] I will visit on her the days of the Baals,
to which she burned incense
when she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels,
and went after her lovers
and forgot me,” says Yahweh.
[14] “Therefore behold, I will allure her,
and bring her into the wilderness,
and speak tenderly to her.
[15] I will give her vineyards from there,
and the valley of Achor for a door of hope;
and she will respond there
as in the days of her youth,
and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.
[16] It will be in that day,” says Yahweh,
“that you will call me ‘my husband,’
and no longer call me ‘my master.’
[17] For I will take away the names of the Baals out of her mouth,
and they will no longer be mentioned by name.
[18] In that day I will make a covenant for them with the animals of the field,
and with the birds of the sky,
and with the creeping things of the ground.
I will break the bow, the sword, and the battle out of the land,
and will make them lie down safely.
[19] I will betroth you to me forever.
Yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness, in justice, in loving kindness, and in compassion.
[20] I will even betroth you to me in faithfulness;
and you shall know Yahweh.
[21] It will happen in that day, that I will respond,” says Yahweh.
“I will respond to the heavens,
and they will respond to the earth;
[22] and the earth will respond to the grain, and the new wine, and the oil;
and they will respond to Jezreel.
[23] I will sow her to me in the earth;
and I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy;
and I will tell those who were not my people, ‘You are my people;’
and they will say, ‘You are My God!’ ”

Israel, a Faithless Wife
[2] Plead H7378 (QalImpv) with your mother, H517 plead: H7378 (QalImpv) for she is not my wife, H802 neither am I her husband: H376 let her therefore put away H5493 (HiphImpf) her whoredoms H2183 out of her sight, H6440 and her adulteries H5005 from between her breasts; H7699 [3] lest I strip H6584 (HiphImpf) her naked, H6174 and set H3322 (HiphPerf) her as in the day H3117 that she was born, H3205 (NiphInf) and make H7760 (QalPerf) her as a wilderness, H4057 and set H7896 (QalPerf) her like a dry H6723 land, H776 and slay H4191 (HiphPerf) her with thirst. H6772 [4] And I will not have mercy H7355 (PielImpf) upon her children; H1121 for they be the children H1121 of whoredoms. H2183 [5] For their mother H517 hath played the harlot: H2181 (QalPerf) she that conceived H2029 (QalActPtc) them hath done shamefully: H3001 (HiphPerf) for she said, H559 (QalPerf) I will go H3212 (QalImpf) after H310 my lovers, H157 (PielPtc) that give H5414 (QalActPtc) me my bread H3899 and my water, H4325 my wool H6785 and my flax, H6593 mine oil H8081 and my drink. H8250§ [6] Therefore, behold, I will hedge H7753 (QalPtc) up thy way H1870 with thorns, H5518 and make H1443 (QalPerf) a wall, H1447§ that she shall not find H4672 (QalImpf) her paths. H5410 [7] And she shall follow H7291 (PielPerf) after her lovers, H157 (PielPtc) but she shall not overtake H5381 (HiphImpf) them; and she shall seek H1245 (PielPerf) them, but shall not find H4672 (QalImpf) them: then shall she say, H559 (QalPerf) I will go H3212 (QalImpf) and return H7725 (QalImpf) to my first H7223 husband; H376 for then was it better H2896 with me than now. H6258 [8] For she did not know H3045 (QalPerf) that I gave H5414 (QalPerf) her corn, H1715 and wine, H8492§ and oil, H3323 and multiplied H7235 (HiphPerf) her silver H3701 and gold, H2091 which they prepared H6213 (QalPerf) for Baal. H1168§ [9] Therefore will I return, H7725 (QalImpf) and take away H3947 (QalPerf) my corn H1715 in the time H6256 thereof, and my wine H8492 in the season H4150 thereof, and will recover H5337 (HiphPerf)§ my wool H6785 and my flax H6593 given to cover H3680 (PielInf) her nakedness. H6172 [10] And now will I discover H1540 (PielImpf) her lewdness H5040§ in the sight H5869 of her lovers, H157 (PielPtc) and none H376 shall deliver H5337 (HiphImpf) her out of mine hand. H3027 [11] I will also cause all her mirth H4885 to cease, H7673 (HiphPerf) her feast days, H2282 her new moons, H2320 and her sabbaths, H7676 and all her solemn feasts. H4150 [12] And I will destroy H8074 (HiphPerf)§ her vines H1612 and her fig trees, H8384 whereof she hath said, H559 (QalPerf) These are my rewards H866 that my lovers H157 (PielPtc) have given H5414 (QalPerf) me: and I will make H7760 (QalPerf) them a forest, H3293 and the beasts H2416 of the field H7704 shall eat H398 (QalPerf) them. [13] And I will visit H6485 (QalPerf) upon her the days H3117 of Baalim, H1168 wherein she burned incense H6999 (HiphImpf) to them, and she decked H5710 (QalImpf) herself with her earrings H5141 and her jewels, H2484 and she went H3212 (QalImpf) after H310 her lovers, H157 (PielPtc) and forgat H7911 (QalPerf) me, saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord. H3068 [14] Therefore, behold, I will allure H6601 (PielPtc) her, and bring H3212 (HiphPerf) her into the wilderness, H4057 and speak H1696 (PielPerf) comfortably H3820§ unto her. [15] And I will give H5414 (QalPerf) her her vineyards H3754 from thence, and the valley H6010 of Achor H5911 for a door H6607 of hope: H8615 and she shall sing H6030 (QalPerf) there, as in the days H3117 of her youth, H5271 and as in the day H3117 when she came up H5927 (QalInf) out of the land H776 of Egypt. H4714 [16] And it shall be at that day, H3117 saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord, H3068 that thou shalt call H7121 (QalImpf) me Ishi; H376ⓘ and shalt call H7121 (QalImpf) me no more Baali. H1180ⓘ [17] For I will take away H5493 (HiphPerf) the names H8034 of Baalim H1168 out of her mouth, H6310 and they shall no more be remembered H2142 (NiphImpf) by their name. H8034 [18] And in that day H3117 will I make H3772 (QalPerf) a covenant H1285 for them with the beasts H2416 of the field, H7704 and with the fowls H5775 of heaven, H8064 and with the creeping things H7431 of the ground: H127 and I will break H7665 (QalImpf) the bow H7198 and the sword H2719 and the battle H4421 out of the earth, H776 and will make them to lie down H7901 (HiphPerf) safely. H983 [19] And I will betroth H781 (PielPerf) thee unto me for ever; H5769 yea, I will betroth H781 (PielPerf) thee unto me in righteousness, H6664 and in judgment, H4941 and in lovingkindness, H2617 and in mercies. H7356 [20] I will even betroth H781 (PielPerf) thee unto me in faithfulness: H530 and thou shalt know H3045 (QalPerf) the Lord. H3068 [21] And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 I will hear, H6030 (QalImpf) saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord, H3068 I will hear H6030 (QalImpf) the heavens, H8064 and they shall hear H6030 (QalImpf) the earth; H776 [22] and the earth H776 shall hear H6030 (QalImpf) the corn, H1715 and the wine, H8492 and the oil; H3323 and they shall hear H6030 (QalImpf) Jezreel. H3157 [23] And I will sow H2232 (QalPerf) her unto me in the earth; H776 and I will have mercy H7355 (PielPerf) upon her that had not obtained mercy; H7355 (PualPerf/QK) and I will say H559 (QalPerf) to them which were not my people, H5971 Thou art my people; H5971 and they shall say, H559 (QalImpf) Thou art my God.
