[1] Israel is a luxuriant vine that produces his fruit.
According to the abundance of his fruit he has multiplied his altars.
As their land has prospered, they have adorned their sacred stones.
[2] Their heart is divided.
Now they will be found guilty.
He will demolish their altars.
He will destroy their sacred stones.
[3] Surely now they will say, “We have no king; for we don’t fear Yahweh;
and the king, what can he do for us?”
[4] They make promises, swearing falsely in making covenants.
Therefore judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.
[5] The inhabitants of Samaria will be in terror for the calves of Beth Aven,
for its people will mourn over it,
along with its priests who rejoiced over it,
for its glory, because it has departed from it.
[6] It also will be carried to Assyria for a present to a great king.
Ephraim will receive shame,
and Israel will be ashamed of his own counsel.
[7] Samaria and her king float away
like a twig on the water.
[8] The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, will be destroyed.
The thorn and the thistle will come up on their altars.
They will tell the mountains, “Cover us!” and the hills, “Fall on us!” [9] “Israel, you have sinned from the days of Gibeah.
There they remained.
The battle against the children of iniquity doesn’t overtake them in Gibeah.
[10] When it is my desire, I will chastise them;
and the nations will be gathered against them
when they are bound to their two transgressions.
[11] Ephraim is a trained heifer that loves to thresh,
so I will put a yoke on her beautiful neck.
I will set a rider on Ephraim.
Judah will plow.
Jacob will break his clods.
[12] Sow to yourselves in righteousness,
reap according to kindness.
Break up your fallow ground,
for it is time to seek Yahweh,
until he comes and rains righteousness on you.
[13] You have plowed wickedness.
You have reaped iniquity.
You have eaten the fruit of lies,
for you trusted in your way, in the multitude of your mighty men.
[14] Therefore a battle roar will arise among your people,
and all your fortresses will be destroyed,
as Shalman destroyed Beth Arbel in the day of battle.
The mother was dashed in pieces with her children.
[15] So Bethel will do to you because of your great wickedness.
At daybreak the king of Israel will be destroyed.

King James Version
[1] IsraelH3478 [is] an emptyH1238(QalActPtc) vine,H1612 he bringeth forthH7737(PielImpf) fruitH6529 unto himself: according to the multitudeH7230 of his fruitH6529 he hath increasedH7235(HiphPerf) the altars;H4196 according to the goodnessH2896 of his landH776 they have made goodlyH2895(HiphPerf) images.H4676 [2] Their heartH3820 is divided;H2505(QalPerf) now shall they be found faulty:H816(QalImpf) he shall break downH6202(QalImpf) their altars,H4196 he shall spoilH7703(PoelImpf) their images.H4676 [3] For now they shall say,H559(QalImpf) We have no king,H4428 because we fearedH3372(QalPerf) not the Lord;H3068 what then should a kingH4428 doH6213(QalImpf) to us? [4] They have spokenH1696(PielPerf) words,H1697 swearingH422(QalInf) falselyH7723 in makingH3772(QalInf) a covenant:H1285 thus judgmentH4941 springeth upH6524(QalPerf) as hemlockH7219 in the furrowsH8525 of the field.H7704 [5] The inhabitantsH7934 of SamariaH8111 shall fearH1481(QalImpf) because of the calvesH5697 of Bethaven:H1007 for the peopleH5971 thereof shall mournH56(QalPerf) over it, and the priestsH3649 thereof [that] rejoicedH1523(QalImpf) on it, for the gloryH3519 thereof, because it is departedH1540(QalPerf) from it. [6] It shall be also carriedH2986(HophImpf) unto AssyriaH804 [for] a presentH4503 to kingH4428 Jareb:H3377 EphraimH669 shall receiveH3947(QalImpf) shame,H1317 and IsraelH3478 shall be ashamedH954(QalImpf) of his own counsel.H6098 [7] [As for] Samaria,H8111 her kingH4428 is cut offH1820(NiphPerf) as the foamH7110 uponH6440 the water.H4325 [8] The high placesH1116 also of Aven,H206 the sinH2403 of Israel,H3478 shall be destroyed:H8045(NiphPerf) the thornH6975 and the thistleH1863 shall come upH5927(QalImpf) on their altars;H4196 and they shall sayH559(QalPerf) to the mountains,H2022 CoverH3680(PielImpv) us; and to the hills,H1389 FallH5307(QalImpv) on us. [9] O Israel,H3478 thou hast sinnedH2398(QalPerf) from the daysH3117 of Gibeah:H1390 there they stood:H5975(QalPerf) the battleH4421 in GibeahH1390 against the childrenH1121 of iniquityH5932 did not overtakeH5381(HiphImpf) them. [10] [It is] in my desireH185 that I should chastiseH3256(QalImpf) them; and the peopleH5971 shall be gatheredH622(PualPerf) against them, when they shall bindH631(QalInf) themselves in their twoH8147 furrows.H5869 [11] And EphraimH669 [is as] an heiferH5697 [that is] taught,H3925(PualPtc) [and] lovethH157(QalActPtc) to tread outH1758(QalInf) [the corn]; but I passed overH5674(QalPerf) upon her fairH2898 neck:H6677 I will make EphraimH669 to ride;H7392(HiphImpf) JudahH3063 shall plow,H2790(QalImpf) [and] JacobH3290 shall break his clods.H7702(PielImpf) [12] SowH2232(QalImpv) to yourselves in righteousness,H6666 reapH7114(QalImpv) inH6310 mercy;H2617 break upH5214(QalImpv) your fallow ground:H5215 for [it is] timeH6256 to seekH1875(QalInf) the Lord,H3068 till he comeH935(QalImpf) and rainH3384(HiphImpf) righteousnessH6664 upon you. [13] Ye have plowedH2790(QalPerf) wickedness,H7562 ye have reapedH7114(QalPerf) iniquity;H5766 ye have eatenH398(QalPerf) the fruitH6529 of lies:H3585 because thou didst trustH982(QalPerf) in thy way,H1870 in the multitudeH7230 of thy mighty men.H1368 [14] Therefore shall a tumultH7588 ariseH6965(QalPerf) among thy people,H5971 and all thy fortressesH4013 shall be spoiled,H7703(HophImpf) as ShalmanH8020 spoiledH7701 BetharbelH1009 in the dayH3117 of battle:H4421 the motherH517 was dashed in piecesH7376(PualPerf) upon [her] children.H1121 [15] SoH3602 shall BethelH1008 doH6213(QalPerf) unto you becauseH6440 of your greatH7451 wickedness:H7451 in a morningH7837 shall the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 utterlyH1820(NiphInf) be cut off.H1820(NiphPerf)
