[1] When all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, their heart melted, and there was no more spirit in them, because of the children of Israel. [2] At that time, Yahweh said to Joshua, “Make flint knives, and circumcise again the sons of Israel the second time.” [3] Joshua made himself flint knives, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. [4] This is the reason Joshua circumcised them: all the people who came out of Egypt, who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness along the way, after they came out of Egypt. [5] For all the people who came out were circumcised; but all the people who were born in the wilderness along the way as they came out of Egypt had not been circumcised. [6] For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to Yahweh’s voice. Yahweh swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. [7] Their children, whom he raised up in their place, were circumcised by Joshua, for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them on the way. [8] When they were done circumcising the whole nation, they stayed in their places in the camp until they were healed. [9] Yahweh said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” Therefore the name of that place was called Gilgal to this day. [10] The children of Israel encamped in Gilgal. They kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho. [11] They ate unleavened cakes and parched grain of the produce of the land on the next day after the Passover, in the same day. [12] The manna ceased on the next day, after they had eaten of the produce of the land. The children of Israel didn’t have manna any more, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year. [13] When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man stood in front of him with his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our enemies?” [14] He said, “No; but I have come now as commander of Yahweh’s army.”Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and worshiped, and asked him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” [15] The prince of Yahweh’s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals, for the place on which you stand is holy.” Joshua did so.

  1. “Gilgal” sounds like the Hebrew for “roll.”
King James Version
[1] And it came to pass, when all the kingsH4428 of the Amorites,H567 which [were] on the sideH5676 of JordanH3383 westward,H3220 and all the kingsH4428 of the Canaanites,H3669 which [were] by the sea,H3220 heardH8085(QalInf) that the LordH3068 had dried upH3001(HiphPerf) the watersH4325 of JordanH3383 from beforeH6440 the childrenH1121 of Israel,H3478 until we were passed over,H5674(QalInf) that their heartH3824 melted,H4549(NiphImpf) neither was there spiritH7307 in them any more, becauseH6440 of the childrenH1121 of Israel.H3478 [2] At that timeH6256 the LordH3068 saidH559(QalPerf) unto Joshua,H3091 MakeH6213(QalImpv) thee sharpH6697 knives,H2719 and circumciseH4135(QalImpv) againH7725(QalImpv) the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 the second time.H8145 [3] And JoshuaH3091 madeH6213(QalImpf) him sharpH6697 knives,H2719 and circumcisedH4135(QalImpf) the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 at the hillH1389 of the foreskins.H6190 [4] And this [is] the causeH1697 why JoshuaH3091 did circumcise:H4135(QalPerf) All the peopleH5971 that came outH3318(QalActPtc) of Egypt,H4714 [that were] males,H2145 [even] all the menH582 of war,H4421 diedH4191(QalPerf) in the wildernessH4057 by the way,H1870 after they came outH3318(QalInf) of Egypt.H4714 [5] NowH3588 all the peopleH5971 that came outH3318(QalActPtc) were circumcised:H4135(QalPasPtc) but all the peopleH5971 [that were] bornH3209 in the wildernessH4057 by the wayH1870 as they came forthH3318(QalInf) out of Egypt,H4714 [them] they had not circumcised.H4135(QalPerf) [6] For the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 walkedH1980(QalPerf) fortyH705 yearsH8141 in the wilderness,H4057 till all the peopleH1471 [that were] menH582 of war,H4421 which came outH3318(QalActPtc) of Egypt,H4714 were consumed,H8552(QalInf) because they obeyedH8085(QalPerf) not the voiceH6963 of the Lord:H3068 unto whom the LordH3068 swareH7650(NiphPerf) that he would not shewH7200(HiphInf) them the land,H776 which the LordH3068 swareH7650(NiphPerf) unto their fathersH1 that he would giveH5414(QalInf) us, a landH776 that flowethH2100(QalActPtc) with milkH2461 and honey.H1706 [7] And their children,H1121 [whom] he raised upH6965(HiphPerf) in their stead, them JoshuaH3091 circumcised:H4135(QalPerf) for they were uncircumcised,H6189 because they had not circumcisedH4135(QalPerf) them by the way.H1870 [8] And it came to pass, when they had doneH8552(QalPerf) circumcisingH4135(NiphInf) all the people,H1471 that they abodeH3427(QalImpf) in their places in the camp,H4264 till they were whole.H2421(QalInf) [9] And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Joshua,H3091 This dayH3117 have I rolled awayH1556(QalPerf) the reproachH2781 of EgyptH4714 from off you. Wherefore the nameH8034 of the placeH4725 is calledH7121(QalImpf) GilgalH1537 unto this day.H3117 [10] And the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 encampedH2583(QalImpf) in Gilgal,H1537 and keptH6213(QalImpf) the passoverH6453 on the fourteenthH702 dayH3117 of the monthH2320 at evenH6153 in the plainsH6160 of Jericho.H3405 [11] And they did eatH398(QalImpf) of the old cornH5669 of the landH776 on the morrowH4283 after the passover,H6453 unleavened cakes,H4682 and parchedH7033(QalPasPtc) [corn] in the selfsameH6106 day.H3117 [12] And the mannaH4478 ceasedH7673(QalImpf) on the morrowH4283 after they had eatenH398(QalInf) of the old cornH5669 of the land;H776 neither had the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 mannaH4478 any more; but they did eatH398(QalImpf) of the fruitH8393 of the landH776 of CanaanH3667 that year.H8141 [13] And it came to pass, when JoshuaH3091 was by Jericho,H3405 that he lifted upH5375(QalImpf) his eyesH5869 and looked,H7200(QalImpf) and, behold, there stoodH5975(QalActPtc) a manH376 over against him with his swordH2719 drawnH8025(QalPasPtc) in his hand:H3027 and JoshuaH3091 wentH3212(QalImpf) unto him, and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, [Art] thou for us, or for our adversaries?H6862 [14] And he said,H559(QalImpf) Nay; but [as] captainH8269 of the hostH6635 of the LordH3068 am I now come.H935(QalPerf) And JoshuaH3091 fellH5307(QalImpf) on his faceH6440 to the earth,H776 and did worship,H7812(HithImpf) and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, What saithH1696(PielPtc) my lordH113 unto his servant?H5650 [15] And the captainH8269 of the Lord’sH3068 hostH6635 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Joshua,H3091 LooseH5394(QalImpv) thy shoeH5275 from off thy foot;H7272 for the placeH4725 whereon thou standestH5975(QalActPtc) [is] holy.H6944 And JoshuaH3091 didH6213(QalImpf) so.
