Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, who was of Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet King David.

There were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of Saul’s house, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went through the Jordan in the presence of the king.

^[19:18] και χιλιοι ανδρες μετ αυτου εκ του βενιαμιν και σιβα το παιδαριον του οικου σαουλ και δεκα πεντε υιοι αυτου μετ αυτου και εικοσι δουλοι αυτου μετ αυτου και κατευθυναν τον ιορδανην εμπροσθεν του βασιλεως

A ferry boat went to bring over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king when he had come over the Jordan.

He said to the king, “Don’t let my lord impute iniquity to me, or remember that which your servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

For your servant knows that I have sinned. Therefore behold, I have come today as the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.”

^[19:21] οτι εγνω ο δουλος σου οτι εγω ημαρτον και ιδου εγω ηλθον σημερον προτερος παντος οικου ιωσηφ του καταβηναι εις απαντην του κυριου μου του βασιλεως

David said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should be adversaries to me today? Shall any man be put to death today in Israel? For don’t I know that I am king over Israel today?”

And David H1732 said, H559 (QalImpf) What have I to do with you, ye sons H1121 of Zeruiah, H6870 that ye should this day H3117 be adversaries H7854 unto me? shall there any man H376 be put to death H4191 (HophImpf) this day H3117 in Israel? ^[19:23] και ειπεν δαυιδ τι εμοι και υμιν υιοι σαρουιας οτι γινεσθε μοι σημερον εις επιβουλον σημερον ου θανατωθησεται τις ανηρ εξ ισραηλ οτι ουκ οιδα ει σημερον βασιλευω εγω επι τον ισραηλ

The king said to Shimei, “You will not die.” The king swore to him.

Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither groomed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace.

When he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, the king said to him, “Why didn’t you go with me, Mephibosheth?”

And it came to pass, when he was come H935 (QalPerf) to Jerusalem H3389 to meet H7125 (QalInf) the king, H4428 that the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Wherefore wentest H1980 (QalPerf) not thou with me, Mephibosheth? H4648

^[19:26] και εγενετο οτε εισηλθεν εις ιερουσαλημ εις απαντησιν του βασιλεως και ειπεν αυτω ο βασιλευς τι οτι ουκ επορευθης μετ εμου μεμφιβοσθε

He answered, “My lord, O king, my servant deceived me. For your servant said, ‘I will saddle a donkey for myself, that I may ride on it and go with the king,’ because your servant is lame.

And he answered, H559 (QalImpf) My lord, H113 O king, H4428 my servant H5650 deceived H7411 (PielPerf) me: for thy servant H5650 said, H559 (QalPerf) I will saddle H2280 (QalImpf) me an ass, H2543 that I may ride H7392 (QalImpf) thereon, and go H3212 (QalImpf) to the king; H4428 because thy servant H5650 [is] lame. ^[19:27] και ειπεν προς αυτον μεμφιβοσθε κυριε μου βασιλευ ο δουλος μου παρελογισατο με οτι ειπεν ο παις σου αυτω επισαξον μοι την ονον και επιβω επ αυτην και πορευσομαι μετα του βασιλεως οτι χωλος ο δουλος σου

He has slandered your servant to my lord the king, but my lord the king is as an angel of God. Therefore do what is good in your eyes.

^[19:28] και μεθωδευσεν εν τω δουλω σου προς τον κυριον μου τον βασιλεα και ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς ως αγγελος του θεου και ποιησον το αγαθον εν οφθαλμοις σου

For all my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king; yet you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should appeal any more to the king?”

For all [of] my father’s H1 house H1004 were but H3808 dead H4194 men H582 before my lord H113 the king: H4428 yet didst thou set H7896 (QalImpf) thy servant H5650 among them that did eat H398 (QalActPtc) at thine own table. ^[19:29] οτι ουκ ην πας ο οικος του πατρος μου αλλ η οτι ανδρες θανατου τω κυριω μου τω βασιλει και εθηκας τον δουλον σου εν τοις εσθιουσιν την τραπεζαν σου και τι εστιν μοι ετι δικαιωμα και του κεκραγεναι με ετι προς τον βασιλεα

The king said to him, “Why do you speak any more of your matters? I say, you and Ziba divide the land.”

And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Why speakest H1696 (PielImpf) thou any more of thy matters? H1697 I have said, H559 (QalPerf) Thou and Ziba H6717 divide H2505 (QalImpf) the land. H7704

^[19:30] και ειπεν αυτω ο βασιλευς ινα τι λαλεις ετι τους λογους σου ειπον συ και σιβα διελεισθε τον αγρον

Mephibosheth said to the king, “Yes, let him take all, because my lord the king has come in peace to his own house.”

And Mephibosheth H4648 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the king, H4428 Yea, let him take H3947 (QalImpf) all, forasmuch H310 as H834 my lord H113 the king H4428 is come again H935 (QalPerf) in peace H7965 unto his own house. H1004

^[19:31] και ειπεν μεμφιβοσθε προς τον βασιλεα και γε τα παντα λαβετω μετα το παραγενεσθαι τον κυριον μου τον βασιλεα εν ειρηνη εις τον οικον αυτου

Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he went over the Jordan with the king to conduct him over the Jordan.

And Barzillai H1271 the Gileadite H1569 came down H3381 (QalPerf) from Rogelim, H7274 and went over H5674 (QalImpf) Jordan H3383 with the king, H4428 to conduct H7971 (PielInf) him over Jordan. H3383

^[19:32] και βερζελλι ο γαλααδιτης κατεβη εκ ρωγελλιμ και διεβη μετα του βασιλεως τον ιορδανην εκπεμψαι αυτον τον ιορδανην

Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even eighty years old. He had provided the king with sustenance while he stayed at Mahanaim, for he was a very great man.

Now Barzillai H1271 was a very H3966 aged H2204 (QalPerf) man, [even] fourscore H8084 years H8141 old: H1121 and he had provided the king H4428 of sustenance H3557 (PilpPerf) while he lay H7871 at Mahanaim; H4266 for he [was] a very H3966 great H1419 man. H376

^[19:33] και βερζελλι ανηρ πρεσβυτερος σφοδρα υιος ογδοηκοντα ετων και αυτος διεθρεψεν τον βασιλεα εν τω οικειν αυτον εν μαναιμ οτι ανηρ μεγας εστιν σφοδρα

The king said to Barzillai, “Come over with me, and I will sustain you with me in Jerusalem.”

And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Barzillai, H1271 Come thou over H5674 (QalImpv) with me, and I will feed H3557 (PilpPerf) thee with me in Jerusalem. H3389

^[19:34] και ειπεν ο βασιλευς προς βερζελλι συ διαβηση μετ εμου και διαθρεψω το γηρας σου μετ εμου εν ιερουσαλημ

Barzillai said to the king, “How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?

And Barzillai H1271 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the king, H4428 How long H3117 have I to live, H8141 H2416 that I should go up H5927 (QalImpf) with the king H4428 unto Jerusalem? H3389

^[19:35] και ειπεν βερζελλι προς τον βασιλεα ποσαι ημεραι ετων ζωης μου οτι αναβησομαι μετα του βασιλεως εις ιερουσαλημ

I am eighty years old, today. Can I discern between good and bad? Can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear the voice of singing men and singing women any more? Why then should your servant be a burden to my lord the king?

I [am] this day H3117 fourscore H8084 years H8141 old: H1121 [and] can I discern H3045 (QalImpf) between good H2896 and evil? H7451 can thy servant H5650 taste H2938 (QalImpf) what H834 I eat H398 (QalImpf) or what H834 I drink? H8354 (QalImpf) can I hear H8085 (QalImpf) any more the voice H6963 of singing men H7891 (QalActPtc) and singing women? H7891 (QalActPtc) wherefore then should thy servant H5650 be yet a burden H4853 unto my lord H113 the king? H4428

^[19:36] υιος ογδοηκοντα ετων εγω ειμι σημερον μη γνωσομαι ανα μεσον αγαθου και κακου η γευσεται ο δουλος σου ετι ο φαγομαι η πιομαι η ακουσομαι ετι φωνην αδοντων και αδουσων ινα τι εσται ετι ο δουλος σου εις φορτιον επι τον κυριον μου τον βασιλεα

Your servant will just go over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king repay me with such a reward?

Thy servant H5650 will go H5674 a little way H4592 over H5674 (QalImpf) Jordan H3383 with the king: H4428 and why should the king H4428 recompense H1580 (QalImpf) it me with such a reward? H1578

^[19:37] ως βραχυ διαβησεται ο δουλος σου τον ιορδανην μετα του βασιλεως και ινα τι ανταποδιδωσιν μοι ο βασιλευς την ανταποδοσιν ταυτην

Please let your servant turn back again, that I may die in my own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold, your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good to you.”

Let thy servant, H5650 I pray thee, turn back again, H7725 (QalImpf) that I may die H4191 (QalImpf) in mine own city, H5892 [and be buried] by the grave H6913 of my father H1 and of my mother. ^[19:38] καθισατω δη ο δουλος σου και αποθανουμαι εν τη πολει μου παρα τω ταφω του πατρος μου και της μητρος μου και ιδου ο δουλος σου χαμααμ διαβησεται μετα του κυριου μου του βασιλεως και ποιησον αυτω το αγαθον εν οφθαλμοις σου

The king answered, “Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good to you. Whatever you request of me, that I will do for you.”

And the king H4428 answered, H559 (QalImpf) Chimham H3643 shall go H5674 (QalImpf) over with me, and I will do H6213 (QalImpf) to him that which shall seem good H2896 H5869 unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require H977 (QalImpf) of me, [that] will I do H6213 (QalImpf) for thee.

^[19:39] και ειπεν ο βασιλευς μετ εμου διαβητω χαμααμ καγω ποιησω αυτω το αγαθον εν οφθαλμοις σου και παντα οσα εκλεξη επ εμοι ποιησω σοι

All the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over. Then the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him; and he returned to his own place.

And all the people H5971 went over H5674 (QalImpf) Jordan. H3383 And when the king H4428 was come over, H5674 (QalPerf) the king H4428 kissed H5401 (QalImpf) Barzillai, H1271 and blessed H1288 (PielImpf) him; and he returned H7725 (QalImpf) unto his own place. H4725

^[19:40] και διεβη πας ο λαος τον ιορδανην και ο βασιλευς διεβη και κατεφιλησεν ο βασιλευς τον βερζελλι και ευλογησεν αυτον και επεστρεψεν εις τον τοπον αυτου

So the king went over to Gilgal, and Chimham went over with him. All the people of Judah brought the king over, and also half the people of Israel.

Then the king H4428 went on H5674 (QalImpf) to Gilgal, H1537 and Chimham H3643 went on H5674 (QalPerf) with him: and all the people H5971 of Judah H3063 conducted H5674 (HiphPerf) (Qere) H5674 (HiphImpf) the king, H4428 and also half H2677 the people H5971 of Israel. H3478

^[19:41] και διεβη ο βασιλευς εις γαλγαλα και χαμααμ διεβη μετ αυτου και πας ο λαος ιουδα διαβαινοντες μετα του βασιλεως και γε το ημισυ του λαου ισραηλ

Behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, “Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and brought the king and his household, over the Jordan, and all David’s men with him?”

And, behold, all the men H376 of Israel H3478 came H935 (QalActPtc) to the king, H4428 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto the king, H4428 Why have our brethren H251 the men H376 of Judah H3063 stolen thee away, H1589 (QalPerf) and have brought H5674 (HiphImpf) the king, H4428 and his household, H1004 and all David’s H1732 men H582 with him, over Jordan? ^[19:42] και ιδου πας ανηρ ισραηλ παρεγενοντο προς τον βασιλεα και ειπον προς τον βασιλεα τι οτι εκλεψαν σε οι αδελφοι ημων ανηρ ιουδα και διεβιβασαν τον βασιλεα και τον οικον αυτου τον ιορδανην και παντες ανδρες δαυιδ μετ αυτου

All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is a close relative to us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king’s cost? Or has he given us any gift?”

And all the men H376 of Judah H3063 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the men H376 of Israel, H3478 Because the king H4428 [is] near of kin H7138 to us: wherefore then be ye angry H2734 (QalPerf) for this matter? H1697 have we eaten H398 (QalPerf) at all H398 (QalInf) of the king’s H4428 [cost]? or hath he given H5375 (PielPerf) us any gift? H5379

^[19:43] και απεκριθη πας ανηρ ιουδα προς ανδρα ισραηλ και ειπαν διοτι εγγιζει προς με ο βασιλευς και ινα τι ουτως εθυμωθης περι του λογου τουτου μη βρωσει εφαγαμεν εκ του βασιλεως η δομα εδωκεν η αρσιν ηρεν ημιν

The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, “We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more claim to David than you. Why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?” The words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

And the men H376 of Israel H3478 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the men H376 of Judah, H3063 and said, H559 (QalImpf) We have ten H6235 parts H3027 in the king, H4428 and we H589 have also more [right] in David H1732 than ye: why then did ye despise H7043 (HiphPerf) us, that our advice H1697 should not be first H7223 had in bringing back H7725 (HiphInf) our king? H4428 And the words H1697 of the men H376 of Judah H3063 were fiercer H7185 (QalImpf) than the words H1697 of the men H376 of Israel. H3478

^[19:44] και απεκριθη ανηρ ισραηλ τω ανδρι ιουδα και ειπεν δεκα χειρες μοι εν τω βασιλει και πρωτοτοκος εγω η συ και γε εν τω δαυιδ ειμι υπερ σε και ινα τι τουτο υβρισας με και ουκ ελογισθη ο λογος μου πρωτος μοι του επιστρεψαι τον βασιλεα εμοι και εσκληρυνθη ο λογος ανδρος ιουδα υπερ τον λογον ανδρος ισραηλ

So all the men of Israel went up from following David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah joined with their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

So every man H376 of Israel H3478 went up H5927 (QalImpf) from after H310 David, H1732 [and] followed H310 Sheba H7652 the son H1121 of Bichri: H1075 but the men H376 of Judah H3063 clave H1692 (QalPerf) unto their king, H4428 from Jordan H3383 even to Jerusalem. H3389

και ανεβη πας ανηρ ισραηλ απο οπισθεν δαυιδ οπισω σαβεε υιου βοχορι και ανηρ ιουδα εκολληθη τω βασιλει αυτων απο του ιορδανου και εως ιερουσαλημ

David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in custody and provided them with sustenance, but didn’t go in to them. So they were shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood.

And David H1732 came H935 (QalImpf) to his house H1004 at Jerusalem; H3389 and the king H4428 took H3947 (QalImpf) the ten H6235 women H802 [his] concubines, H6370 whom he had left H3240 (HiphPerf) to keep H8104 (QalInf) the house, H1004 and put H5414 (QalImpf) them in ward, H4931 and fed H3557 (PilpImpf) them, but went not in H935 (QalPerf) unto them. και εισηλθεν δαυιδ εις τον οικον αυτου εις ιερουσαλημ και ελαβεν ο βασιλευς τας δεκα γυναικας τας παλλακας αυτου ας αφηκεν φυλασσειν τον οικον και εδωκεν αυτας εν οικω φυλακης και διεθρεψεν αυτας και προς αυτας ουκ εισηλθεν και ησαν συνεχομεναι εως ημερας θανατου αυτων χηραι ζωσαι

Then the king said to Amasa, “Call me the men of Judah together within three days, and be here present.”

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς προς αμεσσαι βοησον μοι τον ανδρα ιουδα τρεις ημερας συ δε αυτου στηθι

The matter is not so. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against the king, even against David. Just deliver him, and I will depart from the city.” The woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”

ουχ ουτος ο λογος οτι ανηρ εξ ορους εφραιμ σαβεε υιος βοχορι ονομα αυτου και επηρεν την χειρα αυτου επι τον βασιλεα δαυιδ δοτε αυτον μοι μονον και απελευσομαι απανωθεν της πολεως και ειπεν η γυνη προς ιωαβ ιδου η κεφαλη αυτου ριφησεται προς σε δια του τειχους

Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. They cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. He blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

Then the woman H802 went H935 (QalImpf) unto all the people H5971 in her wisdom. H2451 And they cut off H3772 (QalImpf) the head H7218 of Sheba H7652 the son H1121 of Bichri, H1075 and cast H7993 (HiphImpf) [it] out to Joab. και εισηλθεν η γυνη προς παντα τον λαον και ελαλησεν προς πασαν την πολιν εν τη σοφια αυτης και αφειλεν την κεφαλην σαβεε υιου βοχορι και εβαλεν προς ιωαβ και εσαλπισεν εν κερατινη και διεσπαρησαν απο της πολεως ανηρ εις τα σκηνωματα αυτου και ιωαβ απεστρεψεν εις ιερουσαλημ προς τον βασιλεα

let seven men of his sons be delivered to us, and we will hang them up to Yahweh in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of Yahweh.” The king said, “I will give them.”

But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Merab the daughter of Saul, whom she bore to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite.

They buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in Zela, in the tomb of Kish his father; and they performed all that the king commanded. After that, God answered prayer for the land.

και εθαψαν τα οστα σαουλ και τα οστα ιωναθαν του υιου αυτου και των ηλιασθεντων εν γη βενιαμιν εν τη πλευρα εν τω ταφω κις του πατρος αυτου και εποιησαν παντα οσα ενετειλατο ο βασιλευς και επηκουσεν ο θεος τη γη μετα ταυτα

He gives great deliverance to his king, and shows loving kindness to his anointed, to David and to his offspring, forever more.”

Joab said to the king, “Now may Yahweh your God add to the people, however many they may be, one hundred times; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king delight in this thing?”

και ειπεν ιωαβ προς τον βασιλεα και προσθειη κυριος ο θεος σου προς τον λαον ωσπερ αυτους και ωσπερ αυτους εκατονταπλασιονα και οφθαλμοι του κυριου μου του βασιλεως ορωντες και ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς ινα τι βουλεται εν τω λογω τουτω

Notwithstanding, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the army. Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.

και εδωκεν ιωαβ τον αριθμον της επισκεψεως του λαου προς τον βασιλεα και εγενετο ισραηλ οκτακοσιαι χιλιαδες ανδρων δυναμεως σπωμενων ρομφαιαν και ανηρ ιουδα πεντακοσιαι χιλιαδες ανδρων μαχητων

Araunah looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him. Then Araunah went out and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David said, “To buy your threshing floor, to build an altar to Yahweh, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”

και ειπεν ορνα τι οτι ηλθεν ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς προς τον δουλον αυτου και ειπεν δαυιδ κτησασθαι παρα σου τον αλωνα του οικοδομησαι θυσιαστηριον τω κυριω και συσχεθη η θραυσις επανω του λαου

Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Behold, the cattle for the burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood.

And Araunah H728 said H559 (QalImpf) unto David, H1732 Let my lord H113 the king H4428 take H3947 (QalImpf) and offer up H5927 (HiphImpf) what [seemeth] good H2896 unto him: H5869 behold, H7200 (QalImpv) [here be] oxen H1241 for burnt sacrifice, H5930 and threshing instruments H4173 and [other] instruments H3627 of the oxen H1241 for wood. και ειπεν ορνα προς δαυιδ λαβετω και ανενεγκετω ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς τω κυριω το αγαθον εν οφθαλμοις αυτου ιδου οι βοες εις ολοκαυτωμα και οι τροχοι και τα σκευη των βοων εις ξυλα

All this, O king, does Araunah give to the king.” Araunah said to the king, “May Yahweh your God accept you.”

All these [things] did Araunah, H728 [as] a king, H4428 give H5414 (QalPerf) unto the king. H4428 And Araunah H728 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the king, H4428 The Lord H3068 thy God H430 accept H7521 (QalImpf) thee.

τα παντα εδωκεν ορνα τω βασιλει και ειπεν ορνα προς τον βασιλεα κυριος ο θεος σου ευλογησαι σε

The king said to Araunah, “No, but I will most certainly buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to Yahweh my God which cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels° of silver.

2 Samuel 24:24 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces, so 50 shekels is about 0.5 kilograms or 1.1 pounds.

And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Araunah, H728 Nay; but I will surely H7069 (QalInf) buy H7069 (QalImpf) [it] of thee at a price: H4242 neither will I offer H5927 (HiphImpf) burnt offerings H5930 unto the Lord H3068 my God H430 of that which doth cost me nothing. και ειπεν ο βασιλευς προς ορνα ουχι οτι αλλα κτωμενος κτησομαι παρα σου εν αλλαγματι και ουκ ανοισω τω κυριω θεω μου ολοκαυτωμα δωρεαν και εκτησατο δαυιδ τον αλωνα και τους βοας εν αργυριω σικλων πεντηκοντα

Now King David was old and advanced in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he couldn’t keep warm.

και ειπον οι παιδες αυτου ζητησατωσαν τω κυριω ημων τω βασιλει παρθενον νεανιδα και παραστησεται τω βασιλει και εσται αυτον θαλπουσα και κοιμηθησεται μετ αυτου και θερμανθησεται ο κυριος ημων ο βασιλευς
