[1] These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
[2] It is the glory of God to conceal a thing,
but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
[3] As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth,
so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.
[4] Take away the dross from the silver,
and material comes out for the refiner.
[5] Take away the wicked from the king’s presence,
and his throne will be established in righteousness.
[6] Don’t exalt yourself in the presence of the king,
or claim a place among great men;
[7] for it is better that it be said to you, “Come up here,”
than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince,
whom your eyes have seen.
[8] Don’t be hasty in bringing charges to court.
What will you do in the end when your neighbor shames you?
[9] Debate your case with your neighbor,
and don’t betray the confidence of another,
[10] lest one who hears it put you to shame,
and your bad reputation never depart. [11] A word fitly spoken
is like apples of gold in settings of silver.
[12] As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold,
so is a wise reprover to an obedient ear.
[13] As the cold of snow in the time of harvest,
so is a faithful messenger to those who send him;
for he refreshes the soul of his masters.
[14] As clouds and wind without rain,
so is he who boasts of gifts deceptively.
[15] By patience a ruler is persuaded.
A soft tongue breaks the bone.
[16] Have you found honey?
Eat as much as is sufficient for you,
lest you eat too much, and vomit it.
[17] Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house,
lest he be weary of you, and hate you.
[18] A man who gives false testimony against his neighbor
is like a club, a sword, or a sharp arrow.
[19] Confidence in someone unfaithful in time of trouble
is like a bad tooth or a lame foot.
[20] As one who takes away a garment in cold weather,
or vinegar on soda,
so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.
[21] If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat.
If he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
[22] for you will heap coals of fire on his head,
and Yahweh will reward you.
[23] The north wind produces rain;
so a backbiting tongue brings an angry face.
[24] It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop
than to share a house with a contentious woman.
[25] Like cold water to a thirsty soul,
so is good news from a far country.
[26] Like a muddied spring and a polluted well,
so is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.
[27] It is not good to eat much honey,
nor is it honorable to seek one’s own honor.
[28] Like a city that is broken down and without walls
is a man whose spirit is without restraint.
[2] It is the glory of God to conceal a thing,
but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

King James Version
[1] These [are] also proverbsH4912 of Solomon,H8010 which the menH582 of HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 copied out.H6275(HiphPerf) [2] [It is] the gloryH3519 of GodH430 to concealH5641(HiphInf) a thing:H1697 but the honourH3519 of kingsH4428 [is] to search outH2713(QalInf) a matter.H1697 [3] The heavenH8064 for height,H7312 and the earthH776 for depth,H6011 and the heartH3820 of kingsH4428 [is] unsearchable.H2714 [4] Take awayH1898(QalInf) the drossH5509 from the silver,H3701 and there shall come forthH3318(QalImpf) a vesselH3627 for the finer.H6884(QalActPtc) [5] Take awayH1898(QalInf) the wickedH7563 [from] beforeH6440 the king,H4428 and his throneH3678 shall be establishedH3559(NiphImpf) in righteousness.H6664 [6] Put not forthH1921(HithImpf) thyself in the presenceH6440 of the king,H4428 and standH5975(QalImpf) not in the placeH4725 of greatH1419 [men]: [7] For betterH2896 [it is] that it be saidH559(QalInf) unto thee, Come upH5927(QalImpv) hither; than that thou shouldest be put lowerH8213(HiphInf) in the presenceH6440 of the princeH5081 whom thine eyesH5869 have seen.H7200(QalPerf) [8] Go not forthH3318(QalImpf) hastilyH4118 to strive,H7378(QalInf) lest [thou know not] what to doH6213(QalImpf) in the endH319 thereof, when thy neighbourH7453 hath put thee to shame.H3637(HiphInf) [9] DebateH7378(QalImpv) thy causeH7379 with thy neighbourH7453 [himself]; and discoverH1540(PielImpf) not a secretH5475 to another:H312 [10] Lest he that hearethH8085(QalActPtc) [it] put thee to shame,H2616(PielImpf) and thine infamyH1681 turn not away.H7725(QalImpf) [11] A wordH1697 fitlyH212(Qere) spokenH1696(QalPasPtc) [is like] applesH8598 of goldH2091 in picturesH4906 of silver.H3701 [12] [As] an earringH5141 of gold,H2091 and an ornamentH2481 of fine gold,H3800 [so is] a wiseH2450 reproverH3198(HiphPtc) upon an obedientH8085(QalActPtc) ear.H241 [13] As the coldH6793 of snowH7950 in the timeH3117 of harvest,H7105 [so is] a faithfulH539(NiphPtc) messengerH6735 to them that sendH7971(QalActPtc) him: for he refreshethH7725(HiphImpf) the soulH5315 of his masters.H113 [14] WhosoH376 boastethH1984(HithPtc) himself of a falseH8267 giftH4991 [is like] cloudsH5387 and windH7307 without rain.H1653 [15] By longH753 forbearingH639 is a princeH7101 persuaded,H6601(PualImpf) and a softH7390 tongueH3956 breakethH7665(QalImpf) the bone.H1634 [16] Hast thou foundH4672(QalPerf) honey?H1706 eatH398(QalImpv) so much as is sufficientH1767 for thee, lest thou be filledH7646(QalImpf) therewith, and vomitH6958(HiphPerf) it. [17] WithdrawH3365(HiphImpv) thy footH7272 from thy neighbour’sH7453 house;H1004 lest he be wearyH7646(QalImpf) of thee, and [so] hateH8130(QalPerf) thee. [18] A manH376 that bearethH6030(QalActPtc) falseH8267 witnessH5707 against his neighbourH7453 [is] a maul,H4650 and a sword,H2719 and a sharpH8150(QalActPtc) arrow.H2671 [19] ConfidenceH4009 in an unfaithful manH898(QalActPtc) in timeH3117 of troubleH6869 [is like] a brokenH7465 tooth,H8127 and a footH7272 out of joint.H4154 [20] [As] he that taketh awayH5710(HiphPtc) a garmentH899 in coldH7135 weather,H3117 [and as] vinegarH2558 upon nitre,H5427 so [is] he that singethH7891(QalActPtc) songsH7892 to an heavyH7451 heart.H3820 [21] If thine enemyH8130(QalActPtc) be hungry,H7457 give him breadH3899 to eat;H398(HiphImpv) and if he be thirsty,H6771 give him waterH4325 to drink:H8248(HiphImpv) [22] For thou shalt heapH2846(QalActPtc) coals of fireH1513 upon his head,H7218 and the LordH3068 shall rewardH7999(PielImpf) thee. [23] The northH6828 windH7307 driveth awayH2342(PoleImpf) rain:H1653 so [doth] an angryH2194(NiphPtc) countenanceH6440 a backbitingH5643 tongue.H3956 [24] [It is] betterH2896 to dwellH3427(QalInf) in the cornerH6438 of the housetop,H1406 than with a brawlingH4079(Qere) womanH802 and in a wideH2267 house.H1004 [25] [As] coldH7119 watersH4325 to a thirstyH5889 soul,H5315 so [is] goodH2896 newsH8052 from a farH4801 country.H776 [26] A righteousH6662 man falling downH4131(QalPtc) beforeH6440 the wickedH7563 [is as] a troubledH7515(NiphPtc) fountain,H4599 and a corruptH7843(HophPtc) spring.H4726 [27] [It is] not goodH2896 to eatH398(QalInf) muchH7235(HiphInf) honey:H1706 so [for men] to searchH2714 their own gloryH3519 [is not] glory.H3519 [28] HeH376 that [hath] no ruleH4623 over his own spiritH7307 [is like] a cityH5892 [that is] broken down,H6555(QalPasPtc) [and] without walls.H2346
