1 Kings 13 – read and compare multiple versions of the Bible

^[1] Behold, a man of God came out of Judah by Yahweh’s word to Bethel; and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.
^[2] He cried against the altar by Yahweh’s word, and said, “Altar! Altar! Yahweh says: ‘Behold, a son will be born to David’s house, Josiah by name. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and they will burn men’s bones on you.’”
^[3] He gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which Yahweh has spoken: Behold, the altar will be split apart, and the ashes that are on it will be poured out.”
^[4] When the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Bethel, Jeroboam put out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him!” His hand, which he put out against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to himself.
^[5] The altar was also split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by Yahweh’s word.
^[6] The king answered the man of God, “Now intercede for the favor of Yahweh your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” The man of God interceded with Yahweh, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and became as it was before.
^[7] The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.”
^[8] The man of God said to the king, “Even if you gave me half of your house, I would not go in with you, neither would I eat bread nor drink water in this place;
^[9] for so was it commanded me by Yahweh’s word, saying, ‘You shall eat no bread, drink no water, and don’t return by the way that you came.’”
^[10] So he went another way, and didn’t return by the way that he came to Bethel.
^[11] Now an old prophet lived in Bethel, and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told their father the words which he had spoken to the king.
^[12] Their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” Now his sons had seen which way the man of God went, who came from Judah.
^[13] He said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him; and he rode on it.
^[14] He went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak. He said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” He said, “I am.”
^[15] Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.”
^[16] He said, “I may not return with you, nor go in with you. I will not eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
^[17] For it was said to me by Yahweh’s word, ‘You shall eat no bread or drink water there, and don’t turn again to go by the way that you came.’”
^[18] He said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are; and an angel spoke to me by Yahweh’s word, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.’” He lied to him.
^[19] So he went back with him, ate bread in his house, and drank water.
^[20] As they sat at the table, Yahweh’s word came to the prophet who brought him back;
^[21] and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, “Yahweh says, ‘Because you have been disobedient to Yahweh’s word, and have not kept the commandment which Yahweh your God commanded you,
^[22] but came back, and have eaten bread and drank water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread, and drink no water,” your body will not come to the tomb of your fathers.’”
^[23] After he had eaten bread and after he drank, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back.
^[24] When he had gone, a lion met him by the way and killed him. His body was thrown on the path, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the body.
^[25] Behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown on the path, and the lion standing by the body; and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived.
^[26] When the prophet who brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who was disobedient to Yahweh’s word. Therefore Yahweh has delivered him to the lion, which has mauled him and slain him, according to Yahweh’s word which he spoke to him.”
^[27] He said to his sons, saying, “Saddle the donkey for me,” and they saddled it.
^[28] He went and found his body thrown on the path, and the donkey and the lion standing by the body. The lion had not eaten the body nor mauled the donkey.
^[29] The prophet took up the body of the man of God, and laid it on the donkey, and brought it back. He came to the city of the old prophet to mourn, and to bury him.
^[30] He laid his body in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, “Alas, my brother!”
^[31] After he had buried him, he spoke to his sons, saying, “When I am dead, bury me in the tomb in which the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones.
^[32] For the saying which he cried by Yahweh’s word against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, will surely happen.”
^[33] After this thing, Jeroboam didn’t turn from his evil way, but again made priests of the high places from among all the people. Whoever wanted to, he consecrated him, that there might be priests of the high places.
^[34] This thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off and to destroy it from off the surface of the earth.

^[4] And it came to pass, H1961 when king H4428 Jeroboam H3379 heard H8085 H853 the saying H1697 of the man H376 of God, H430 which H834 had cried H7121 against H5921 the altar H4196 in Beth-el, H1008 that he put forth H7971 H853 his hand H3027 from H5921 the altar, H4196 saying, H559 Lay hold on him. H8610 And his hand, H3027 which H834 he put forth H7971 against him, H5921 dried up, H3001 so that he could H3201 not H3808 pull it in again H7725 to him. H413
^[5] The altar H4196 also was rent, H7167 and the ashes H1880 poured out H8210 from H4480 the altar, H4196 according to the sign H4159 which H834 the man H376 of God H430 had given H5414 by the word H1697 of the Lord. H3068
^[6] And the king H4428 answered H6030 and said H559 unto H413 the man H376 of God, H430 Intreat H2470 now H4994 H853 the face H6440 of the Lord^§ H3068 thy God, H430 and pray H6419 for me, H1157 that my hand H3027 may be restored H7725 me H413 again. ^[7] And the king H4428 said H1696 unto H413 the man H376 of God, H430 Come H935 home H1004 with me, H854 and refresh thyself, H5582 and I will give H5414 thee a reward. H4991
^[8] And the man H376 of God H430 said H559 unto H413 the king, H4428 If H518 thou wilt give H5414 H853 me half H2677 thine house, H1004 I will H935 not H3808 go in H935 with thee, H5973 neither H3808 will I eat H398 bread H3899 nor H3808 drink H8354 water H4325 in this H2088 place: H4725
^[9] for H3588 so H3651 was it charged H6680 me H853 by the word H1697 of the Lord, H3068 saying, H559 Eat H398 no H3808 bread, H3899 nor H3808 drink H8354 water, H4325 nor H3808 turn again H7725 by the same way H1870 that H834 thou camest. H1980
^[10] So he went H3212 another H312 way, H1870 and returned H7725 not H3808 by the way H1870 that H834 he came H935 to H413 Beth-el. H1008
^[11] Now there dwelt H3427 an H259 old H2205 prophet H5030 in Beth-el; H1008 and his sons H1121 came H935 and told H5608 H853 him all H3605 the works H4639 that H834 the man H376 of God H430 had done H6213 that day H3117 in Beth-el: H1008 H853 the words H1697 which H834 he had spoken H1696 unto H413 the king, H4428 them they told H5608 also to their father. ^[14] and went H3212 after H310 the man H376 of God, H430 and found H4672 him sitting H3427 under H8478 an oak: H424 and he said H559 unto him, H413 Art thou H859 the man H376 of God H430 that H834 camest H935 from Judah? H3063 And he said, H559 I H589 am.
^[15] Then he said H559 unto him, H413 Come H3212 home H1004 with me, H854 and eat H398 bread. H3899
^[16] And he said, H559 I may H3201 not H3808 return H7725 with thee, H854 nor go in H935 with thee: H854 neither H3808 will I eat H398 bread H3899 nor H3808 drink H8354 water H4325 with thee H854 in this H2088 place: H4725

^[18] He said H559 unto him, I H589 am a prophet H5030 also H1571 as thou H3644 art; and an angel H4397 spake H1696 unto me H413 by the word H1697 of the Lord, H3068 saying, H559 Bring him back H7725 with thee H854 into H413 thine house, H1004 that he may eat H398 bread H3899 and drink H8354 water. ^[20] And it came to pass, H1961 as H3427 they H1992 sat H3427 at H413 the table, H7979 that the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 came H1961 unto H413 the prophet H5030 that H834 brought him back: H7725
^[21] and he cried H7121 unto H413 the man H376 of God H430 that H834 came H935 from Judah, H3063 saying, H559 Thus H3541 saith H559 the Lord, H3068 Forasmuch H3282 as H3588 thou hast disobeyed H4784 the mouth H6310 of the Lord, H3068 and hast H8104 not H3808 kept H8104 H853 the commandment H4687 which H834 the Lord H3068 thy God H430 commanded thee, H6680
^[22] but camest back, H7725 and hast eaten H398 bread H3899 and drunk H8354 water H4325 in the place, H4725 of the which H834 the Lord did say H1696 to thee, H413 Eat H398 no H408 bread, H3899 and drink H8354 no H408 water; H4325 thy carcase H5038 shall H935 not H3808 come H935 unto H413 the sepulchre H6913 of thy fathers. ^[23] And it came to pass, H1961 after H310 he had eaten H398 bread, H3899 and after H310 he had drunk, H8354 that he saddled H2280 for him the ass, H2543 to wit, for the prophet H5030 whom H834 he had brought back. H7725
^[24] And when he was gone, H3212 a lion H738 met him H4672 by the way, H1870 and slew him: H4191 H1961 and his carcase H5038 was cast H7993 in the way, H1870 and the ass H2543 stood H5975 by it, H681 the lion H738 also stood H5975 by H681 the carcase. H5038

^[26] And when the prophet H5030 that H834 brought him back H7725 from H4480 the way H1870 heard H8085 thereof, he said, H559 It H1931 is the man H376 of God, H430 who H834 was disobedient H4784 H853 unto the word H6310 of the Lord: H3068 therefore the Lord H3068 hath delivered him H5414 unto the lion, H738 which hath torn^§ him, H7665 and slain him, H4191 according to the word H1697 of the Lord, H3068 which H834 he spake H1696 unto him.
^[27] And he spake H1696 to H413 his sons, H1121 saying, H559 Saddle H2280 H853 me the ass. H2543 And they saddled H2280 him.
^[28] And he went H3212 and found H4672 H853 his carcase H5038 cast H7993 in the way, H1870 and the ass H2543 and the lion H738 standing H5975 by H681 the carcase: H5038 the lion H738 had H398 not H3808 eaten H398 H853 the carcase, H5038 nor H3808 torn^§ H7665 H853 the ass. H2543
^[29] And the prophet H5030 took up H5375 H853 the carcase H5038 of the man H376 of God, H430 and laid it H3240 upon H413 the ass, H2543 and brought it back: H7725 and the old H2205 prophet H5030 came H935 to H413 the city, H5892 to mourn H5594 and to bury him. H6912
^[30] And he laid H3240 H853 his carcase H5038 in his own grave; H6913 and they mourned H5594 over him, H5921 saying, Alas, H1945 my brother! H251

^[33] After H310 this H2088 thing H1697 Jeroboam H3379 returned H7725 not H3808 from his evil H7451 way, H1870 but made H6213 again^§ H7725 of the lowest H7098 of the people H5971 priests H3548 of the high places: H1116 whosoever would, H2655 he consecrated H4390 H853 him,^§ H3027 and he became H1961 one of the priests H3548 of the high places. ^[34] And this H2088 thing H1697 became H1961 sin H2403 unto the house H1004 of Jeroboam, H3379 even to cut it off, H3582 and to destroy H8045 it from off H5921 the face H6440 of the earth. H127
