And he giveth back the eleven hundred silverlings to his mother, and his mother saith, ‘I had certainly sanctified the silver to Jehovah, from my hand, for my son, to make a graven image, and a molten image; and now, I give it back to thee.’

The man Micah had a house of gods, and he made an ephod, and teraphim,° and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

Judges 17:5 teraphim were household idols that may have been associated with inheritance rights to the household property.

As to the man Micah, he hath a house of gods, and he maketh an ephod, and teraphim, and consecrateth the hand of one of his sons, and he is to him for a priest;

Micah consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah.

When ye go, ye come in unto a people confident, and the land is large on both hands, for God hath given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything which is in the land.’

They said to him, “Hold your peace, put your hand on your mouth, and go with us. Be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?”

and they say to him, ‘Keep silent, lay thy hand on thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us for a father and for a priest: is it better thy being a priest to the house of one man, or thy being priest to a tribe and to a family in Israel?’

and Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, is standing before it in those days-saying, ‘Do I add again to go out to battle with the sons of Benjamin, my brother, or do I cease?’ And Jehovah saith, ‘Go up, for to-morrow I give him into thy hand.’

would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me seriously for your sakes, for Yahweh’s hand has gone out against me.”

Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must buy it also from Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance.”

The custom of the priests with the people was that when anyone offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant came while the meat was boiling, with a fork of three teeth in his hand;

And the custom of the priests with the people is: any man sacrificing a sacrifice-then hath the servant of the priest come in when the flesh is boiling, and the hook of three teeth in his hand,

Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.

Woe to us, who doth deliver us out of the hand of these honourable gods? these are the gods who are smiting the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.

When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for God’s ark. When the man came into the city and told about it, all the city cried out.

When he made mention of God’s ark, Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

And it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man is old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.

When they arose early on the following morning, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before Yahweh’s ark; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold. Only Dagon’s torso was intact.

And they rise early in the morning on the morrow, and lo, Dagon is fallen on its face to the earth, before the ark of Jehovah, and the head of Dagon, and the two palms of its hands are cut off at the threshold, only the fishy part hath been left to him;

But Yahweh’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and he destroyed them and struck them with tumors, even Ashdod and its borders.

But the hand H3027 of the Lord H3068 was heavy H3513 (QalImpf) upon them of Ashdod, H796 and he destroyed H8074 (HiphImpf) them, and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) them with emerods, H2914 (Qere) H6076 [even] Ashdod H795 and the coasts H1366 thereof.

And the hand of Jehovah is heavy on the Ashdodites, and He maketh them desolate, and smiteth them with emerods, Ashdod and its borders.

When the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel shall not stay with us, for his hand is severe on us and on Dagon our god.”

And when the men H582 of Ashdod H795 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that [it was] so, they said, H559 (QalPerf) The ark H727 of the God H430 of Israel H3478 shall not abide H3427 (QalImpf) with us: for his hand H3027 is sore H7185 (QalPerf) upon us, and upon Dagon H1712 our god. H430

And the men of Ashdod see that it is so, and have said, ‘The ark of the God of Israel doth not abide with us, for hard hath been His hand upon us, and upon Dagon our god.’

It was so, that after they had carried it there, Yahweh’s hand was against the city with a very great confusion; and he struck the men of the city, both small and great, so that tumors broke out on them.

And it was [so], that, after H310 they had carried it about, H5437 (HiphPerf) the hand H3027 of the Lord H3068 was against the city H5892 with a very H3966 great H1419 destruction: H4103 and he smote H5221 (HiphImpf) the men H582 of the city, H5892 both small H6996 and great, H1419 and they had emerods H2914 (Qere) H6076 in their secret parts. and it cometh to pass after they have brought it round, that the hand of Jehovah is against the city-a very great destruction; and He smiteth the men of the city, from small even unto great; and break forth on them do emerods.

They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, “Send the ark of the God of Israel away, and let it go again to its own place, that it not kill us and our people.” For there was a deadly panic throughout all the city. The hand of God was very heavy there.

And they send and gather all the princes of the Philistines, and say, ‘Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and it turneth back to its place, and it doth not put us to death-and our people;’ for there hath been a deadly destruction throughout all the city, very heavy hath the hand of God been there,

They said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, don’t send it empty; but by all means return a trespass offering to him. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.”

And they said, H559 (QalImpf) If ye send away H7971 (PielPtc) the ark H727 of the God H430 of Israel, H3478 send H7971 (PielImpf) it not empty; H7387 but in any wise H7725 (HiphInf) return H7725 (HiphImpf) him a trespass offering: H817 then ye shall be healed, H7495 (NiphImpf) and it shall be known H3045 (NiphPerf) to you why his hand H3027 is not removed H5493 (QalImpf) from you.

And they say, ‘If ye are sending away the ark of the God of Israel, ye do not send it away empty; for ye do certainly send back to Him a guilt-offering; then ye are healed, and it hath been known to you why His hand doth not turn aside from you.’

Therefore you shall make images of your tumors and images of your mice that mar the land; and you shall give glory to the God of Israel. Perhaps he will release his hand from you, from your gods, and from your land.

Wherefore ye shall make H6213 (QalPerf) images H6754 of your emerods, H2914 (Qere) H6076 and images H6754 of your mice H5909 that mar H7843 (HiphPtc) the land; H776 and ye shall give H5414 (QalPerf) glory H3519 unto the God H430 of Israel: H3478 peradventure he will lighten H7043 (HiphImpf) his hand H3027 from off you, and from off your gods, H430 and from off your land. and ye have made images of your emerods, and images of your mice that are corrupting the land, and have given honour to the God of Israel; it may be He doth lighten His hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land;

Behold, if it goes up by the way of its own border to Beth Shemesh, then he has done us this great evil; but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us. It was a chance that happened to us.”

And see, H7200 (QalPerf) if it goeth up H5927 (QalImpf) by the way H1870 of his own coast H1366 to Bethshemesh, H1053 [then] he hath done H6213 (QalPerf) us this great H1419 evil: H7451 but if not, then we shall know H3045 (QalPerf) that [it is] not his hand H3027 [that] smote H5060 (QalPerf) us: it [was] a chance H4745 [that] happened to us. H1961 (QalPerf)

and ye have seen, if the way of its own border it goeth up to Beth-Shemesh-He hath done to us this great evil; and if not, then we have known that His hand hath not come against us; an accident it hath been to us.’

Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you are returning to Yahweh with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your hearts to Yahweh, and serve him only; and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.”

And Samuel H8050 spake H559 (QalImpf) unto all the house H1004 of Israel, H3478 saying, H559 (QalInf) If ye do return H7725 (QalActPtc) unto the Lord H3068 with all your hearts, H3824 [then] put away H5493 (HiphImpv) the strange H5236 gods H430 and Ashtaroth H6252 from among H8432 you, and prepare H3559 (HiphImpv) your hearts H3824 unto the Lord, H3068 and serve H5647 (QalImpv) him only: and he will deliver H5337 (HiphImpf) you out of the hand H3027 of the Philistines. H6430

And Samuel speaketh unto all the house of Israel, saying, ‘If with all your heart ye are turning back unto Jehovah-turn aside the gods of the stranger from your midst, and Ashtaroth; and prepare your heart unto Jehovah, and serve Him only, and He doth deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.’

The children of Israel said to Samuel, “Don’t stop crying to Yahweh our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.”

And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 said H559 (QalImpf) to Samuel, H8050 Cease H2790 (HiphImpf) not to cry H2199 (QalInf) unto the Lord H3068 our God H430 for us, that he will save H3467 (HiphImpf) us out of the hand H3027 of the Philistines. H6430

And the sons of Israel say unto Samuel, ‘Keep not silent for us from crying unto Jehovah our God, and He doth save us out of the hand of the Philistines.’

So the Philistines were subdued, and they stopped coming within the border of Israel. Yahweh’s hand was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

So the Philistines H6430 were subdued, H3665 (NiphImpf) and they came H935 (QalInf) no more H3254 (QalPerf) into the coast H1366 of Israel: H3478 and the hand H3027 of the Lord H3068 was against the Philistines H6430 all the days H3117 of Samuel. H8050

And the Philistines are humbled, and have not added any more to come into the border of Israel, and the hand of Jehovah is on the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

The cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath; and Israel recovered its border out of the hand of the Philistines. There was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

And the cities H5892 which the Philistines H6430 had taken H3947 (QalPerf) from Israel H3478 were restored H7725 (QalImpf) to Israel, H3478 from Ekron H6138 even unto Gath; H1661 and the coasts H1366 thereof did Israel H3478 deliver H5337 (HiphPerf) out of the hands H3027 of the Philistines. H6430 And there was peace H7965 between Israel H3478 and the Amorites. H567

And the cities which the Philistines have taken from Israel are restored to Israel-from Ekron even unto Gath-and their border hath Israel delivered out of the hand of the Philistines; and there is peace between Israel and the Amorite.

The servant answered Saul again and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel° of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”

1 Samuel 9:8 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces, so 1/4 shekel would be a small coin of about 2.5 grams.

And the servant H5288 answered H6030 (QalInf) Saul H7586 again, H3254 (HiphImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, I have H4672 (NiphPerf) here at hand H3027 the fourth part H7253 of a shekel H8255 of silver: H3701 [that] will I give H5414 (QalPerf) to the man H376 of God, H430 to tell H5046 (HiphPerf) us our way. And the young man addeth to answer Saul, and saith, ‘Lo, there is found with me a fourth of a shekel of silver: and I have given to the man of God, and he hath declared to us our way.’

“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He will save my people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.”

‘At this time tomorrow, I send unto thee a man out of the land of Benjamin-and thou hast anointed him for leader over My people Israel, and he hath saved My people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have seen My people, for its cry hath come in unto Me.’

They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive from their hand.

And they will H7592 (QalPerf) salute H7965 thee, and give H5414 (QalPerf) thee two H8147 [loaves] of bread; H3899 which thou shalt receive H3947 (QalPerf) of their hands. H3027

and they have asked of thee of welfare, and given to thee two loaves, and thou hast received from their hand.

Let it be, when these signs have come to you, that you do what is appropriate for the occasion; for God is with you.

And let it be, when these signs H226 are come H935 (QalImpf) unto thee, [that] thou do H6213 (QalImpv) as occasion H4672 (QalImpf) serve H3027 thee; for God H430 [is] with thee.

and it hath been, when these signs come to thee-do for thyself as thy hand findeth, for God is with thee.

and he said to the children of Israel, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’

and saith unto the sons of Israel, ‘Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I have brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I deliver you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms who are oppressing you;

He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces, then sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever doesn’t come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

and he taketh a couple of oxen, and cutteth them in pieces, and sendeth through all the border of Israel, by the hand of the messengers, saying, ‘He who is not coming out after Saul and after Samuel-thus it is done to his oxen;’ and the fear of Jehovah falleth on the people, and they come out as one man.

Here I am. Witness against me before Yahweh and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Of whose hand have I taken a bribe to make me blind my eyes? I will restore it to you.”

Behold, here I [am]: witness H6030 (QalImpv) against me before the Lord, H3068 and before his anointed: H4899 whose ox H7794 have I taken? H3947 (QalPerf) or whose ass H2543 have I taken? ‘Lo, here am I; testify against me, over-against Jehovah, and over-against His anointed; whose ox have I taken, and whose ass have I taken, and whom have I oppressed; whom have I bruised, and of whose hand have I taken a ransom, and hide mine eyes with it?-and I restore to you.’

They said, “You have not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither have you taken anything from anyone’s hand.”

And they say, ‘Thou hast not oppressed us, nor hast thou crushed us, nor hast thou taken from the hand of any one anything.’

He said to them, “Yahweh is witness against you, and his anointed is witness today, that you have not found anything in my hand.” They said, “He is witness.”

And he saith unto them, ‘A witness is Jehovah against you: and a witness is His anointed this day, that ye have not found anything in my hand;’ and they say, ‘A witness.’

But they forgot Yahweh their God; and he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the army of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab; and they fought against them.

and they forget Jehovah their God, and He selleth them into the hand of Sisera, head of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fight against them,

They cried to Yahweh, and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken Yahweh and have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth; but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve you.’

and they cry unto Jehovah, and say, We have sinned, because we have forsaken Jehovah, and serve the Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and now, deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we serve Thee.

Yahweh sent Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and you lived in safety.

‘And Jehovah sendeth Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivereth you out of the hand of your enemies round about, and ye dwell confidently.

But if you will not listen to Yahweh’s voice, but rebel against the commandment of Yahweh, then Yahweh’s hand will be against you, as it was against your fathers.

But if ye will not obey H8085 (QalImpf) the voice H6963 of the Lord, H3068 but rebel H4784 (QalPerf) against the commandment H6310 of the Lord, H3068 then shall the hand H3027 of the Lord H3068 be against you, as [it was] against your fathers. H1

‘And if ye do not hearken to the voice of Jehovah-then ye have provoked the mouth of Jehovah, and the hand of Jehovah hath been against you, and against your fathers.

So it came to pass in the day of battle that neither sword nor spear was found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan; but Saul and Jonathan his son had them.

So it came to pass in the day H3117 of battle, H4421 that there was neither sword H2719 nor spear H2595 found H4672 (NiphPerf) in the hand H3027 of any of the people H5971 that [were] with Saul H7586 and Jonathan: H3129 but with Saul H7586 and with Jonathan H3129 his son H1121 was there found. And it hath been, in the day of battle, that there hath not been found sword and spear in the hand of any of the people who are with Saul and with Jonathan-and there is found to Saul and to Jonathan his son.

But if they say this, ‘Come up to us!’ then we will go up, for Yahweh has delivered them into our hand. This shall be the sign to us.”

But if they say H559 (QalImpf) thus, Come up H5927 (QalImpv) unto us; then we will go up: H5927 (QalPerf) for the Lord H3068 hath delivered H5414 (QalPerf) them into our hand: H3027 and this [shall be] a sign H226 unto us.

and if thus they say, ‘Come up against us,’ then we have gone up, for Jehovah hath given them into our hand, and this to us is the sign.

The men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something!” Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come up after me, for Yahweh has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”

And the men of the station answer Jonathan, and the bearer of his weapons, and say, ‘Come up unto us, and we cause you to know something.’ And Jonathan saith unto the bearer of his weapons, ‘Come up after me, for Jehovah hath given them into the hand of Israel.’

Jonathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armor bearer after him, and they fell before Jonathan; and his armor bearer killed them after him.

And Jonathan goeth up on his hands, and on his feet, and the bearer of his weapons after him; and they fall before Jonathan, and the bearer of his weapons is putting to death after him.

While Saul talked to the priest, the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand!”

And it cometh to pass, while Saul spake unto the priest, that the noise which is in the camp of the Philistines goeth on, going on and becoming great, and Saul saith unto the priest, ‘Remove thy hand.’

When the people had come to the forest, behold, honey was dripping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.

and the people come in unto the forest, and lo, the honey dropped, and none is moving his hand unto his mouth, for the people feared the oath.

But Jonathan didn’t hear when his father commanded the people with the oath. Therefore he put out the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes brightened.

And Jonathan hath not heard of his father’s adjuring the people, and putteth forth the end of the rod, which is in his hand, and dippeth it in the honeycomb, and bringeth back his hand unto his mouth-and his eyes see!

Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and tell them, ‘Every man bring me here his ox, and every man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat; and don’t sin against Yahweh in eating meat with the blood.’ ” All the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and killed them there.

And Saul saith, ‘Be ye scattered among the people, and ye have said to them, Bring ye nigh unto me each his ox, and each his sheep; and ye have slain them in this place, and eaten, and ye do not sin against Jehovah to eat with the blood.’ And all the people bring nigh each his ox, in his hand, that night, and slaughter them there.
