“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He will save my people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.”

‘At this time tomorrow, I send unto thee a man out of the land of Benjamin-and thou hast anointed him for leader over My people Israel, and he hath saved My people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have seen My people, for its cry hath come in unto Me.’

When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! He will have authority over my people.”

And when Samuel H8050 saw H7200 (QalPerf) Saul, H7586 the Lord H3068 said H6030 (QalPerf) unto him, Behold the man H376 whom I spake H559 (QalPerf) to thee of! this same shall reign H6113 (QalImpf) over my people. H5971

When Samuel hath seen Saul, then hath Jehovah answered him, ‘Lo, the man of whom I have spoken unto thee; this one doth restrain My people.’

Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons.

And Samuel H8050 took H3947 (QalImpf) Saul H7586 and his servant, H5288 and brought H935 (HiphImpf) them into the parlour, H3957 and made them sit H5414 (QalImpf) in the chiefest H7218 place H4725 among them that were bidden, H7121 (QalPasPtc) which [were] about thirty H7970 persons. H376

And Samuel taketh Saul, and his young man, and bringeth them in to the chamber, and giveth to them a place at the head of those called; and they are about thirty men.

When you have departed from me today, then you will find two men by Rachel’s tomb, on the border of Benjamin at Zelzah. They will tell you, ‘The donkeys which you went to look for have been found; and behold, your father has stopped caring about the donkeys and is anxious for you, saying, “What shall I do for my son?” ’

When thou art departed H3212 (QalInf) from me H5978 to day, H3117 then thou shalt find H4672 (QalPerf) two H8147 men H582 by Rachel’s H7354 sepulchre H6900 in the border H1366 of Benjamin H1144 at Zelzah; H6766 and they will say H559 (QalPerf) unto thee, The asses H860 which thou wentest H1980 (QalPerf) to seek H1245 (PielInf) are found: H4672 (NiphPerf) and, lo, thy father H1 hath left H5203 (QalPerf) the care H1697 of the asses, H860 and sorroweth H1672 (QalPerf) for you, saying, H559 (QalInf) What shall I do H6213 (QalImpf) for my son? In thy going to-day from me-then thou hast found two men by the grave of Rachel, in the border of Benjamin, at Zelzah, and they have said unto thee, The asses have been found which thou hast gone to seek; and lo, thy father hath left the matter of the asses, and hath sorrowed for you, saying, What do I do for my son?

“Then you will go on forward from there, and you will come to the oak of Tabor. Three men will meet you there going up to God to Bethel: one carrying three young goats, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a container of wine.

‘And thou hast passed on thence, and beyond, and hast come in unto the oak of Tabor, and found thee there have three men going up unto God to Beth-El, one bearing three kids, and one bearing three cakes of bread, and one bearing a bottle of wine,

Then Yahweh’s Spirit will come mightily on you, then you will prophesy with them and will be turned into another man.

And the Spirit H7307 of the Lord H3068 will come H6743 (QalPerf) upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy H5012 (HithPerf) with them, and shalt be turned H2015 (NiphPerf) into another H312 man. H376

and prospered over thee hath the Spirit of Jehovah, and thou hast prophesied with them, and hast been turned to another man;

When all who knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said to one another, “What is this that has come to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”

And it came to pass, when all that knew H3045 (QalActPtc) him beforetime H865 H8032 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that, behold, he prophesied H5012 (NiphPerf) among the prophets, H5030 then the people H5971 said H559 (QalImpf) one H376 to another, H7453 What [is] this [that] is come unto the son H1121 of Kish? And it cometh to pass, all his acquaintance heretofore, see, and lo, with prophets he hath prophesied, and the people say one unto another, ‘What is this hath happened to the son of Kish? is Saul also among the prophets?’

One from the same place answered, “Who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

And a man thence answereth and saith, ‘And who is their father?’ therefore it hath been for a simile, ‘Is Saul also among the prophets?’

Therefore they asked of Yahweh further, “Is there yet a man to come here?” Yahweh answered, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.”

Therefore they enquired H7592 (QalImpf) of the Lord H3068 further, if the man H376 should yet come H935 (QalPerf) thither. H1988 And the Lord H3068 answered, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, he hath hid H2244 (NiphPtc) himself among the stuff. H3627

And they ask again at Jehovah, ‘Hath the man yet come hither?’ and Jehovah saith, ‘Lo, he hath been hidden near the vessels.’

Then Samuel told the people the regulations of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before Yahweh. Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

Then Samuel H8050 told H1696 (PielImpf) the people H5971 the manner H4941 of the kingdom, H4410 and wrote H3789 (QalImpf) [it] in a book, H5612 and laid [it] up H3240 (HiphImpf) before H6440 the Lord. And Samuel speaketh unto the people the right of the kingdom, and writeth in a book, and placeth before Jehovah; and Samuel sendeth all the people away, each to his house.

Then Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.”

Then Nahash H5176 the Ammonite H5984 came up, H5927 (QalImpf) and encamped H2583 (QalImpf) against Jabeshgilead: H3003 H1568 and all the men H582 of Jabesh H3003 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Nahash, H5176 Make H3772 (QalImpv) a covenant H1285 with us, and we will serve H5647 (QalImpf) thee.

And Nahash the Ammonite cometh up, and encampeth against Jabesh-Gilead, and all the men of Jabesh say unto Nahash, ‘Make with us a covenant, and we serve thee.’

Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, “What ails the people that they weep?” They told him the words of the men of Jabesh.

And, behold, Saul H7586 came H935 (QalPerf) after H310 the herd H1241 out of the field; H7704 and Saul H7586 said, H559 (QalImpf) What [aileth] the people H5971 that they weep? H1058 (QalImpf) And they told H5608 (PielImpf) him the tidings H1697 of the men H582 of Jabesh. H3003

and lo, Saul hath come after the herd out of the field, and Saul saith, ‘What-to the people, that they weep?’ and they recount to him the words of the men of Jabesh.

He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces, then sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever doesn’t come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

And he took H3947 (QalImpf) a yoke H6776 of oxen, H1241 and hewed them in pieces, H5408 (PielImpf) and sent H7971 (PielImpf) [them] throughout all the coasts H1366 of Israel H3478 by the hands H3027 of messengers, H4397 saying, H559 (QalInf) Whosoever cometh not forth H3318 (QalActPtc) after H310 Saul H7586 and after H310 Samuel, H8050 so shall it be done H6213 (NiphImpf) unto his oxen. and he taketh a couple of oxen, and cutteth them in pieces, and sendeth through all the border of Israel, by the hand of the messengers, saying, ‘He who is not coming out after Saul and after Samuel-thus it is done to his oxen;’ and the fear of Jehovah falleth on the people, and they come out as one man.

He counted them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

And when he numbered H6485 (QalImpf) them in Bezek, H966 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 were three H7969 hundred H3967 thousand, H505 and the men H376 of Judah H3063 thirty H7970 thousand. H505

And he inspecteth them in Bezek, and the sons of Israel are three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

They said to the messengers who came, “Tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will be rescued.’ ” The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

And they said H559 (QalImpf) unto the messengers H4397 that came, H935 (QalActPtc) Thus shall ye say H559 (QalImpf) unto the men H376 of Jabeshgilead, H3003 H1568 To morrow, H4279 by [that time] the sun H8121 be hot, H2527 ye shall have help. And they say to the messengers who are coming, ‘Thus do ye say to the men of Jabesh-Gilead: To-morrow ye have safety-by the heat of the sun;’ and the messengers come and declare to the men of Jabesh, and they rejoice;

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you.”

Therefore the men H582 of Jabesh H3003 said, H559 (QalImpf) To morrow H4279 we will come out H3318 (QalImpf) unto you, and ye shall do H6213 (QalPerf) with us all that seemeth H5869 good H2896 unto you.

and the men of Jabesh say to the Ammonites, ‘To-morrow we come out unto you, and ye have done to us according to all that is good in your eyes.’

The people said to Samuel, “Who is he who said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring those men, that we may put them to death!”

And the people H5971 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Who [is] he that said, H559 (QalActPtc) Shall Saul H7586 reign H4427 (QalImpf) over us? bring H5414 (QalImpv) the men, H582 that we may put them to death. H4191 (HiphImpf)

And the people say unto Samuel, ‘Who is he that saith, Saul doth reign over us! give ye up the men, and we put them to death.’

Saul said, “No man shall be put to death today; for today Yahweh has rescued Israel.”

And Saul H7586 said, H559 (QalImpf) There shall not a man H376 be put to death H4191 (HophImpf) this day: H3117 for to day H3117 the Lord H3068 hath wrought H6213 (QalPerf) salvation H8668 in Israel. H3478

And Saul saith, ‘There is no man put to death on this day, for to-day hath Jehovah wrought salvation in Israel.’

All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal. There they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

And all the people H5971 went H3212 (QalImpf) to Gilgal; H1537 and there they made Saul H7586 king H4427 (HiphImpf) before H6440 the Lord H3068 in Gilgal; H1537 and there they sacrificed H2076 (QalImpf) sacrifices H2077 of peace offerings H8002 before H6440 the Lord; H3068 and there Saul H7586 and all the men H582 of Israel H3478 rejoiced H8055 (QalImpf) greatly. H3966

and all the people go to Gilgal, and cause Saul to reign there before Jehovah in Gilgal, and sacrifice there sacrifices of peace-offerings before Jehovah, and there Saul rejoiceth-and all the men of Israel-very greatly.

They said, “You have not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither have you taken anything from anyone’s hand.”

And they said, H559 (QalImpf) Thou hast not defrauded H6231 (QalPerf) us, nor oppressed H7533 (QalPerf) us, neither hast thou taken H3947 (QalPerf) ought H3972 of any man’s H376 hand. H3027

And they say, ‘Thou hast not oppressed us, nor hast thou crushed us, nor hast thou taken from the hand of any one anything.’

Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. He sent the rest of the people to their own tents.

Saul H7586 chose H977 (QalImpf) him three H7969 thousand H505 [men] of Israel; H3478 [whereof] two thousand H505 were with Saul H7586 in Michmash H4363 and in mount H2022 Bethel, H1008 and a thousand H505 were with Jonathan H3129 in Gibeah H1390 of Benjamin: H1144 and the rest H3499 of the people H5971 he sent H7971 (PielPerf) every man H376 to his tent. and Saul chooseth for himself three thousand men out of Israel; and two thousand are with Saul in Michmash, and in the hill-country of Beth-El; and a thousand have been with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and the remnant of the people he hath sent each to his tents.

When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in tombs, and in pits.

When the men H376 of Israel H3478 saw H7200 (QalPerf) that they were in a strait, H6887 (QalPerf) (for the people H5971 were distressed, H5065 (NiphPerf)) then the people H5971 did hide H2244 (HithImpf) themselves in caves, H4631 and in thickets, H2337 and in rocks, H5553 and in high places, H6877 and in pits. H953

And the men of Israel have seen that they are distressed, that the people hath been oppressed, and the people hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

But now your kingdom will not continue. Yahweh has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which Yahweh commanded you.”

But now thy kingdom H4467 shall not continue: H6965 (QalImpf) the Lord H3068 hath sought H1245 (PielPerf) him a man H376 after his own heart, H3824 and the Lord H3068 hath commanded H6680 (PielImpf) him [to be] captain H5057 over his people, H5971 because thou hast not kept H8104 (QalPerf) [that] which the Lord H3068 commanded H6680 (PielPerf) thee.

and, now, thy kingdom doth not stand, Jehovah hath sought for Himself a man according to His own heart, and Jehovah chargeth him for leader over His people, for thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee.’

Samuel arose, and went from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul counted the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.

And Samuel H8050 arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and gat him up H5927 (QalImpf) from Gilgal H1537 unto Gibeah H1390 of Benjamin. H1144 And Saul H7586 numbered H6485 (QalImpf) the people H5971 [that were] present H4672 (NiphPtc) with him, about six H8337 hundred H3967 men. H376

And Samuel riseth, and goeth up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin; and Saul inspecteth the people who are found with him, about six hundred men,

but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, each man to sharpen his own plowshare, mattock, ax, and sickle.

But all the Israelites H3478 went down H3381 (QalImpf) to the Philistines, H6430 to sharpen H3913 (QalInf) every man H376 his share, H4282 and his coulter, H855 and his axe, H7134 and his mattock. H4281

and all Israel go down to the Philistines, to sharpen each his ploughshare, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock;

Saul stayed in the uttermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron; and the people who were with him were about six hundred men,

And Saul H7586 tarried H3427 (QalActPtc) in the uttermost H7097 part of Gibeah H1390 under a pomegranate tree H7416 which [is] in Migron: H4051 and the people H5971 that [were] with him [were] about six H8337 hundred H3967 men; H376

And Saul is abiding at the extremity of Gibeah, under the pomegranate which is in Migron, and the people who are with him, about six hundred men,

Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will pass over to the men, and we will reveal ourselves to them.

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Jonathan, H3083 Behold, we will pass over H5674 (QalActPtc) unto [these] men, H582 and we will discover H1540 (NiphPerf) ourselves unto them.

And Jonathan saith, ‘Lo, we are passing over unto the men, and are revealed unto them;

The men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor bearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something!” Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come up after me, for Yahweh has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”

And the men H582 of the garrison H4675 answered H6030 (QalImpf) Jonathan H3129 and his armourbearer, H5375 (QalActPtc) H3627 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Come up H5927 (QalImpv) to us, and we will shew H3045 (HiphImpf) you a thing. And the men of the station answer Jonathan, and the bearer of his weapons, and say, ‘Come up unto us, and we cause you to know something.’ And Jonathan saith unto the bearer of his weapons, ‘Come up after me, for Jehovah hath given them into the hand of Israel.’

That first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armor bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow’s length in an acre of land.

And that first H7223 slaughter, H4347 which Jonathan H3129 and his armourbearer H5375 (QalActPtc) H3627 made, H5221 (HiphPerf) was about twenty H6242 men, H376 within as it were an half H2677 acre H4618 of land, H7704 [which] a yoke H6776 [of oxen might plow].

And the first smiting which Jonathan and the bearer of his weapons have smitten is of about twenty men, in about half a furrow of a yoke of a field,

Saul and all the people who were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle; and behold, they were all striking each other with their swords in very great confusion.

And Saul H7586 and all the people H5971 that [were] with him assembled H2199 (NiphImpf) themselves, and they came H935 (QalImpf) to the battle: H4421 and, behold, every man’s H376 sword H2719 was against his fellow, H7453 [and there was] a very H3966 great H1419 discomfiture. H4103

And Saul is called, and all the people who are with him, and they come in unto the battle, and, lo, the sword of each hath been against his neighbour-a very great destruction.

Likewise all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

Likewise all the men H376 of Israel H3478 which had hid H2244 (HithPtc) themselves in mount H2022 Ephraim, H669 [when] they heard H8085 (QalPerf) that the Philistines H6430 fled, H5127 (QalPerf) even they also followed hard H1692 (HiphImpf) after H310 them in the battle. H4421

and all the men of Israel, who are hiding themselves in the hill-country of Ephraim, have heard that the Philistines have fled, and they pursue-even they-after them in battle.

The men of Israel were distressed that day; for Saul had adjured the people, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until it is evening, and I am avenged of my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.

And the men H376 of Israel H3478 were distressed H5065 (NiphPerf) that day: H3117 for Saul H7586 had adjured H422 (HiphImpf) the people, H5971 saying, H559 (QalInf) Cursed H779 (QalPasPtc) [be] the man H376 that eateth H398 (QalImpf) [any] food H3899 until evening, H6153 that I may be avenged H5358 (NiphPerf) on mine enemies. And the men of Israel have been distressed on that day, and Saul adjureth the people, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eateth food till the evening, and I have been avenged of mine enemies;’ and none of the people hath tasted food.

Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father directly commanded the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food today.’ ” So the people were faint.

Then answered H6030 (QalImpf) one H376 of the people, H5971 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Thy father H1 straitly H7650 (HiphInf) charged H7650 the people H5971 with an oath, H7650 (HiphPerf) saying, H559 (QalInf) Cursed H779 (QalPasPtc) [be] the man H376 that eateth H398 (QalImpf) [any] food H3899 this day. And a man of the people answereth and saith, ‘Thy father certainly adjured the people, saying, Cursed is the man who eateth food to-day; and the people are weary.’

Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people, and tell them, ‘Every man bring me here his ox, and every man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat; and don’t sin against Yahweh in eating meat with the blood.’ ” All the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and killed them there.

And Saul H7586 said, H559 (QalImpf) Disperse H6327 (QalImpv) yourselves among the people, H5971 and say H559 (QalPerf) unto them, Bring me hither H5066 (HiphImpv) every man H376 his ox, H7794 and every man H376 his sheep, H7716 and slay H7819 (QalPerf) [them] here, and eat; H398 (QalPerf) and sin H2398 (QalImpf) not against the Lord H3068 in eating H398 (QalInf) with the blood. H1818 And all the people H5971 brought H5066 (HiphImpf) every man H376 his ox H7794 with him H3027 that night, H3915 and slew H7819 (QalImpf) [them] there.

And Saul saith, ‘Be ye scattered among the people, and ye have said to them, Bring ye nigh unto me each his ox, and each his sheep; and ye have slain them in this place, and eaten, and ye do not sin against Jehovah to eat with the blood.’ And all the people bring nigh each his ox, in his hand, that night, and slaughter them there.

Saul said, “Let’s go down after the Philistines by night, and take plunder among them until the morning light. Let’s not leave a man of them.” They said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” Then the priest said, “Let’s draw near here to God.”

And Saul H7586 said, H559 (QalImpf) Let us go down H3381 (QalImpf) after H310 the Philistines H6430 by night, H3915 and spoil H962 (QalImpf) them until the morning H1242 light, H216 and let us not leave H7604 (HiphImpf) a man H376 of them. And they said, H559 (QalImpf) Do H6213 (QalImpv) whatsoever seemeth H5869 good H2896 unto thee. Then said H559 (QalImpf) the priest, H3548 Let us draw near H7126 (QalImpf) hither H1988 unto God. And Saul saith, ‘Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and we prey upon them till the light of the morning, and leave not a man of them.’ And they say, ‘All that is good in thine eyes do.’ And the priest saith, ‘Let us draw near hither unto God.’

There was severe war against the Philistines all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man or any valiant man, he took him into his service.

And there was sore H2389 war H4421 against the Philistines H6430 all the days H3117 of Saul: H7586 and when Saul H7586 saw H7200 (QalPerf) any strong H1368 man, H376 or any valiant H2428 man, H1121 he took H622 (QalImpf) him unto him.

And the war is severe against the Philistines all the days of Saul; when Saul hath seen any mighty man, and any son of valour, then he doth gather him unto himself.

Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and don’t spare them; but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”

Now, go, and thou hast smitten Amalek, and devoted all that it hath, and thou hast no pity on it, and hast put to death from man unto woman, from infant unto suckling, from ox unto sheep, from camel unto ass.’

Saul summoned the people, and counted them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen and ten thousand men of Judah.

Let our lord now command your servants who are in front of you to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. Then when the evil spirit from God is on you, he will play with his hand, and you will be well.”

let our lord command, we pray thee, thy servants before thee, they seek a skilful man, playing on a harp, and it hath come to pass, in the spirit of sadness from God being upon thee, that he hath played with his hand, and it is well with thee.’

Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”

And Saul saith unto his servants, ‘Provide, I pray you, for me a man playing well-then ye have brought him in unto me.’

Then one of the young men answered and said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and Yahweh is with him.”

And one of the servants answereth and saith, ‘Lo, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-Lehemite, skilful in playing, and a mighty virtuous man, and a man of battle, and intelligent in word, and a man of form, and Jehovah is with him.’

Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

And Saul H7586 and the men H376 of Israel H3478 were gathered together, H622 (NiphPerf) and pitched H2583 (QalImpf) by the valley H6010 of Elah, H425 and set the battle H4421 in array H6186 (QalImpf) against H7125 (QalInf) the Philistines. H6430

and Saul and the men of Israel have been gathered, and encamp by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array to meet the Philistines.

A champion out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span° went out.

1 Samuel 17:4 A cubit is the length from the tip of the middle finger to the elbow on a man’s arm, or about 18 inches or 46 centimeters. A span is the length from the tip of a man’s thumb to the tip of his little finger when his hand is stretched out (about half a cubit, or 9 inches, or 22.8 cm.) Therefore, Goliath was about 9 feet and 9 inches or 2.97 meters tall.

And there went out H3318 (QalImpf) a champion H376 H1143 out of the camp H4264 of the Philistines, H6430 named H8034 Goliath, H1555 of Gath, H1661 whose height H1363 [was] six H8337 cubits H520 and a span. H2239

And there goeth out a man of the duellists from the camps of the Philistines, Goliath is his name, from Gath; his height is six cubits and a span,

He stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.

And he standeth and calleth unto the ranks of Israel, and saith to them, ‘Why are ye come out to set in array the battle? am not I the Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose for you a man, and let him come down unto me;

The Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel today! Give me a man, that we may fight together!”

And the Philistine saith, ‘I have reproached the ranks of Israel this day; give to me a man, and we fight together.’

Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons. The man was an elderly old man in the days of Saul.

And David is son of this Ephrathite of Beth-Lehem-Judah, whose name is Jesse, and he hath eight sons, and the man in the days of Saul hath become aged among men;

Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and said the same words; and David heard them.

And he is speaking with them, and lo, a man of the duellists is coming up, Goliath the Philistine is his name, of Gath, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and he speaketh according to those words, and David heareth;

All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were terrified.

and all the men of Israel when they see the man flee from his presence, and are greatly afraid.

The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? He has surely come up to defy Israel. The king will give great riches to the man who kills him, and will give him his daughter, and will make his father’s house tax-free in Israel.”

H5927 (QalActPtc) surely to defy H2778 (PielInf) Israel H3478 is he come up: H5927 (QalActPtc) and it shall be, [that] the man H376 who killeth H5221 (HiphImpf) him, the king H4428 will enrich H6238 (HiphImpf) him with great H1419 riches, H6239 and will give H5414 (QalImpf) him his daughter, H1323 and make H6213 (QalImpf) his father’s H1 house H1004 free H2670 in Israel. And the men of Israel say, ‘Have ye seen this man who is coming up? for, to reproach Israel he is coming up, and it hath been-the man who smiteth him, the king doth enrich him with great riches, and his daughter he doth give to him, and his father’s house doth make free in Israel.’
