The watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gatekeeper and said, “Behold, a man running alone!” The king said, “He also brings news.”

The watchman said, “I think the running of the first one is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” The king said, “He is a good man, and comes with good news.”

And the watchman saith, ‘I see the running of the first as the running of Ahimaaz son of Zadok.’ And the king saith, ‘This is a good man, and with good tidings he cometh.’

Ahimaaz called, and said to the king, “All is well.” He bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, “Blessed is Yahweh your God, who has delivered up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king!”

And Ahimaaz calleth and saith unto the king, ‘Peace;’ and he boweth himself to the king, on his face, to the earth, and saith, ‘Blessed is Jehovah thy God who hath shut up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king.’

Now therefore arise, go out and speak to comfort your servants; for I swear by Yahweh, if you don’t go out, not a man will stay with you this night. That would be worse to you than all the evil that has happened to you from your youth until now.”

Now therefore arise, H6965 (QalImpv) go forth, H3318 (QalImpv) and speak H1696 (PielImpv) comfortably H3820 unto thy servants: H5650 for I swear H7650 (NiphPerf) by the Lord, H3068 if thou go not forth, H3318 (QalActPtc) there will not tarry H3885 (QalImpf) one H376 with thee this night: H3915 and that will be worse H7489 (QalPerf) unto thee than all the evil H7451 that befell H935 (QalPerf) thee from thy youth H5271 until now.

‘And now, rise, go out and speak unto the heart of thy servants, for by Jehovah I have sworn, that-thou art not going out-there doth not lodge a man with thee to-night; and this is worse for thee than all the evil that hath come upon thee from thy youth till now.’

Then the king arose and sat in the gate. The people were all told, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” All the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his tent.

Then the king H4428 arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and sat H3427 (QalImpf) in the gate. H8179 And they told H5046 (HiphPerf) unto all the people, H5971 saying, H559 (QalInf) Behold, the king H4428 doth sit H3427 (QalActPtc) in the gate. And the king riseth, and sitteth in the gate, and to all the people they have declared, saying, ‘Lo, the king is sitting in the gate;’ and all the people come in before the king, and Israel hath fled, each to his tents.

He bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as one man, so that they sent to the king, saying, “Return, you and all your servants.”

There were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of Saul’s house, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went through the Jordan in the presence of the king.

and a thousand men are with him from Benjamin, and Ziba servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him, and they have gone prosperously over the Jordan before the king.

David said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should be adversaries to me today? Shall any man be put to death today in Israel? For don’t I know that I am king over Israel today?”

And David saith, ‘What-to me and to you, O sons of Zeruiah, that ye are to me to-day for an adversary? to-day is any man put to death in Israel? for have I not known that to-day I am king over Israel?’

For all my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king; yet you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should appeal any more to the king?”

For all [of] my father’s H1 house H1004 were but H3808 dead H4194 men H582 before my lord H113 the king: H4428 yet didst thou set H7896 (QalImpf) thy servant H5650 among them that did eat H398 (QalActPtc) at thine own table. for all the house of my father have been nothing except men of death before my lord the king, and thou dost set thy servant among those eating at thy table, and what right have I any more-even to cry any more unto the king?’

Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even eighty years old. He had provided the king with sustenance while he stayed at Mahanaim, for he was a very great man.

and Barzillai is very aged, a son of eighty years, and he hath sustained the king in his abiding in Mahanaim, for he is a very great man;

Behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, “Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and brought the king and his household, over the Jordan, and all David’s men with him?”

And, lo, all the men of Israel are coming unto the king, and they say unto the king, ‘Wherefore have they stolen thee-our brethren, the men of Judah?’ (and they bring the king and his household over the Jordan, and all the men of David with him).

All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is a close relative to us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king’s cost? Or has he given us any gift?”

And all the men of Judah answer against the men of Israel, ‘Because the king is near unto us, and why is this-ye are displeased about this matter? have we at all eaten of the king’s substance? a gift hath he lifted up to us?’

The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, “We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more claim to David than you. Why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?” The words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

And the men H376 of Israel H3478 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the men H376 of Judah, H3063 and said, H559 (QalImpf) We have ten H6235 parts H3027 in the king, H4428 and we H589 have also more [right] in David H1732 than ye: why then did ye despise H7043 (HiphPerf) us, that our advice H1697 should not be first H7223 had in bringing back H7725 (HiphInf) our king? And the men of Israel answer the men of Judah, and say, ‘Ten parts we have in the king, and also in David more than you; and wherefore have ye lightly esteemed us, that our word hath not been first to bring back our king?’ And the word of the men of Judah is sharper than the word of the men of Israel.

There happened to be there a wicked fellow, whose name was Sheba the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the trumpet, and said, “We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to his tents, Israel!”

And there happened H7122 (NiphPerf) to be there a man H376 of Belial, H1100 whose name H8034 [was] Sheba, H7652 the son H1121 of Bichri, H1075 a Benjamite: H1145 and he blew H8628 (QalImpf) a trumpet, H7782 and said, H559 (QalImpf) We have no part H2506 in David, H1732 neither have we inheritance H5159 in the son H1121 of Jesse: H3448 every H376 man H376 to his tents, H168 O Israel. H3478

And there hath been called there a man of worthlessness, and his name is Sheba, son of Bichri, a Benjamite, and he bloweth with a trumpet, and saith, ‘We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; each to his tents, O Israel.’

So all the men of Israel went up from following David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah joined with their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

And every man of Israel goeth up from after David, after Sheba son of Bichri, and the men of Judah have cleaved to their king, from the Jordan even unto Jerusalem.

Then the king said to Amasa, “Call me the men of Judah together within three days, and be here present.”

And the king saith unto Amasa, ‘Call for me the men of Judah in three days, and thou, stand here,’

Joab’s men went out after him with the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

And the men of Joab go out after him, and the Cherethite, and the Pelethite, and all the mighty men, and they go out from Jerusalem to pursue after Sheba son of Bichri;

One of Joab’s young men stood by him, and said, “He who favors Joab, and he who is for David, let him follow Joab!”

And one H376 of Joab’s H3097 men H5288 stood H5975 (QalPerf) by him, and said, H559 (QalImpf) He H4310 that favoureth H2654 (QalPerf) Joab, H3097 and he that [is] for David, H1732 [let him go] after H310 Joab. H3097

And a man hath stood by him, of the young men of Joab, and saith, ‘He who hath delight in Joab, and he who is for David-after Joab!’

Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the middle of the highway. When the man saw that all the people stood still, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a garment over him when he saw that everyone who came by him stood still.

And Amasa H6021 wallowed H1556 (HipoPtc) in blood H1818 in the midst H8432 of the highway. And Amasa is rolling himself in blood, in the midst of the highway, and the man seeth that all the people have stood still, and he bringeth round Amasa out of the highway to the field, and casteth over him a garment, when he hath seen that every one who hath come by him-hath stood still.

When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. They cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. He blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

And the woman cometh unto all the people in her wisdom, and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bichri, and cast it unto Joab, and he bloweth with a trumpet, and they are scattered from the city, each to his tents, and Joab hath turned back to Jerusalem unto the king.

The Gibeonites said to him, “It is no matter of silver or gold between us and Saul or his house; neither is it for us to put any man to death in Israel.” He said, “I will do for you whatever you say.”

And the Gibeonites say to him, ‘We have no silver and gold by Saul and by his house, and we have no man to put to death in Israel;’ and he saith, ‘What ye are saying I do to you.’

They said to the king, “The man who consumed us and who plotted against us, that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the borders of Israel,

And they say unto the king, ‘The man who consumed us, and who devised against us-we have been destroyed from stationing ourselves in all the border of Israel-

let seven men of his sons be delivered to us, and we will hang them up to Yahweh in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of Yahweh.” The king said, “I will give them.”

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah helped him, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, “Don’t go out with us to battle any more, so that you don’t quench the lamp of Israel.”

But Abishai H52 the son H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 succoured H5826 (QalImpf) him, and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) the Philistine, H6430 and killed H4191 (HiphImpf) him. and Abishai son of Zeruiah giveth help to him, and smiteth the Philistine, and putteth him to death; then swear the men of David to him, saying, ‘Thou dost not go out again with us to battle, nor quench the lamp of Israel.’

There was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on every hand and six toes on every foot, twenty-four in number, and he also was born to the giant.

And there was yet a battle H4421 in Gath, H1661 where was a man H376 of [great] stature, H4067 (Qere) H4055 that had on every hand H3027 six H8337 fingers, H676 and on every foot H7272 six H8337 toes, H676 four H702 and twenty H6242 in number; H4557 and he also was born H3205 (PualPerf) to the giant. And the battle is again in Gath, and there is a man of stature, and the fingers of his hands are six, and the toes of his feet are six, twenty and four in number, and he also hath been born to the giant,

who brings me away from my enemies. Yes, you lift me up above those who rise up against me. You deliver me from the violent man.

And that bringeth me forth H3318 (HiphPtc) from mine enemies: H341 (QalActPtc) thou also hast lifted me up on high H7311 (PoleImpf) above them that rose up H6965 (QalPtc) against me: thou hast delivered H5337 (HiphImpf) me from the violent H2555 man. H376

And bringing me forth from mine enemies, Yea, above my withstanders Thou raisest me up. From a man of violence Thou deliverest me.

The man who touches them must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear. They will be utterly burned with fire in their place.”

But the man H376 [that] shall touch H5060 (QalImpf) them must be fenced H4390 (NiphImpf) with iron H1270 and the staff H6086 of a spear; H2595 and they shall be utterly H8313 (QalInf) burned H8313 (NiphImpf) with fire H784 in the [same] place. H7675 (QalInf)

And the man who cometh against them Is filled with iron and the staff of a spear, And with fire they are utterly burnt In the cessation.’

After him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David when they defied the Philistines who were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel had gone away.

And after H310 him [was] Eleazar H499 the son H1121 of Dodo H1734 the Ahohite, H266 [one] of the three H7969 mighty men H1368 with David, H1732 when they defied H2778 (PielInf) the Philistines H6430 [that] were there gathered together H622 (NiphPerf) to battle, H4421 and the men H376 of Israel H3478 were gone away: H5927 (QalImpf)

And after him is Eleazar son of Dodo, son of Ahohi, of the three mighty men with David; in their exposing themselves among the Philistines-they have been gathered there to battle, and the men of Israel go up-

He said, “Be it far from me, Yahweh, that I should do this! Isn’t this the blood of the men who risked their lives to go?” Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.

And he said, H559 (QalImpf) Be it far H2486 from me, O Lord, H3068 that I should do H6213 (QalInf) this: [is not this] the blood H1818 of the men H582 that went H1980 (QalActPtc) in jeopardy of their lives? and saith, ‘Far be it from me, O Jehovah, to do this; is it the blood of the men who are going with their lives?’ and he was not willing to drink it; these things did the three mighty ones.

Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle of a pit in a time of snow.

And Benaiah son of Jehoiada (son of a man of valour, great in deeds from Kabzeel), he hath smitten two lion-like men of Moab, and he hath gone down and smitten the lion in the midst of the pit in a day of snow.

He killed a huge Egyptian, and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.

And he hath smitten the Egyptian man, a man of appearance, and in the hand of the Egyptian is a spear, and he goeth down unto him with a rod, and taketh violently away the spear out of the hand of the Egyptian, and slayeth him with his own spear.

Joab gave up the sum of the counting of the people to the king; and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

and Joab giveth the account of the inspection of the people unto the king, and Israel is eight hundred thousand men of valour, drawing sword, and the men of Judah five hundred thousand men.

So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning even to the appointed time; and seventy thousand men died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba.

And Jehovah giveth a pestilence on Israel from the morning even unto the time appointed, and there die of the people, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba, seventy thousand men,

Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” Then he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

Adonijah killed sheep, cattle, and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En Rogel; and he called all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants;

And Adonijah sacrificeth sheep and oxen and fatlings near the stone of Zoheleth, that is by En-Rogel, and calleth all his brethren, sons of the king, and for all the men of Judah, servants of the king;

While he yet spoke, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said, “Come in; for you are a worthy man, and bring good news.”

All the guests of Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and each man went his way.

“I am going the way of all the earth. You be strong therefore, and show yourself a man;

‘I am going in the way of all the earth, and thou hast been strong, and become a man,

Then Yahweh may establish his word which he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your children are careful of their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail you,’ he said, ‘a man on the throne of Israel.’

so that Jehovah doth establish His word which He spake unto me, saying, If thy sons observe their way to walk before Me in truth, with all their heart, and with all their soul; saying, There is not cut off a man of thine from the throne of Israel.

Now therefore don’t hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man; and you will know what you ought to do to him, and you shall bring his gray head down to Sheol° with blood.”

To Abiathar the priest the king said, “Go to Anathoth, to your own fields, for you are worthy of death. But I will not at this time put you to death, because you bore the Lord^§ Yahweh’s ark before David my father, and because you were afflicted in all in which my father was afflicted.”

And to Abiathar the priest said the king, ‘To Anathoth go, unto thy fields; for a man of death thou art, but in this day I do not put thee to death, because thou hast borne the ark of the Lord Jehovah before David my father, and because thou wast afflicted in all that my father was afflicted in.’

Yahweh will return his blood on his own head, because he fell on two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, and my father David didn’t know it: Abner the son of Ner, captain of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the army of Judah.

and Jehovah hath turned back his blood on his own head, who hath fallen on two men more righteous and better than he, and slayeth them with the sword,-and my father David knew not-Abner son of Ner, head of the host of Israel, and Amasa son of Jether, head of the host of Judah;

I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you for all your days.

and also, that which thou hast not asked I have given to thee, both riches and honour, that there hath not been like thee a man among the kings all thy days;

Judah and Israel lived safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.

Those officers provided food for King Solomon, and for all who came to King Solomon’s table, every man in his month. They let nothing be lacking.

They also brought barley and straw for the horses and swift steeds to the place where the officers were, each man according to his duty.
