[1] Solomon the son of David was firmly established in his kingdom, and Yahweh§ his God§ was with him, and made him exceedingly great. [2] Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the captains of thousands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to every prince in all Israel, the heads of the fathers’ households. [3] Then Solomon, and all the assembly with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for God’s Tent of Meeting was there, which Yahweh’s servant Moses had made in the wilderness. [4] But David had brought God’s ark up from Kiriath Jearim to the place that David had prepared for it; for he had pitched a tent for it at Jerusalem. [5] Moreover the bronze altar that Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was there before Yahweh’s tabernacle; and Solomon and the assembly were seeking counsel there. [6] Solomon went up there to the bronze altar before Yahweh, which was at the Tent of Meeting, and offered one thousand burnt offerings on it. [7] That night, God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for what you want me to give you.” [8] Solomon said to God, “You have shown great loving kindness to David my father, and have made me king in his place. [9] Now, Yahweh God, let your promise to David my father be established; for you have made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. [10] Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of yours?” [11] God said to Solomon, “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, nor yet have you asked for long life; but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge my people, over whom I have made you king, [12] therefore wisdom and knowledge is granted to you. I will give you riches, wealth, and honor, such as none of the kings have had who have been before you, and none after you will have.” [13] So Solomon came from the high place that was at Gibeon, from before the Tent of Meeting, to Jerusalem; and he reigned over Israel. [14] Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen. He had one thousand four hundred chariots and twelve thousand horsemen that he placed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem. [15] The king made silver and gold to be as common as stones in Jerusalem, and he made cedars to be as common as the sycamore trees that are in the lowland. [16] The horses which Solomon had were brought out of Egypt and from Kue. The king’s merchants purchased them from Kue. [17] They imported from Egypt then exported a chariot for six hundred pieces of silver and a horse for one hundred fifty.ⓘ They also exported them to the Hittite kings and the Syrian§ kings.
Footnotes
- “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “Lord” (all caps) in other translations.
- The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).
- The pieces of silver were probably shekels, so 600 pieces would be about 13.2 pounds or 6 kilograms of silver, and 150 would be about 3.3 pounds or 1.5 kilograms of silver.

[1] And SolomonH8010 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 was strengthenedH2388(HithImpf) in his kingdom,H4438 and the LordH3068 his GodH430 [was] with him, and magnifiedH1431(PielImpf) him exceedingly.H4605 [2] Then SolomonH8010 spakeH559(QalImpf) unto all Israel,H3478 to the captainsH8269 of thousandsH505 and of hundreds,H3967 and to the judges,H8199(QalActPtc) and to every governorH5387 in all Israel,H3478 the chiefH7218 of the fathers.H1 [3] So Solomon,H8010 and all the congregationH6951 with him, wentH3212(QalImpf) to the high placeH1116 that [was] at Gibeon;H1391 for there was the tabernacleH168 of the congregationH4150 of God,H430 which MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of the LordH3068 had madeH6213(QalPerf) in the wilderness.H4057 [4] ButH61 the arkH727 of GodH430 had DavidH1732 brought upH5927(HiphPerf) from KirjathjearimH7157 to [the place which] DavidH1732 had preparedH3559(HiphInf) for it: for he had pitchedH5186(QalPerf) a tentH168 for it at Jerusalem.H3389 [5] Moreover the brasenH5178 altar,H4196 that BezaleelH1212 the sonH1121 of Uri,H221 the sonH1121 of Hur,H2354 had made,H6213(QalPerf) he putH7760(QalPerf) beforeH6440 the tabernacleH4908 of the Lord:H3068 and SolomonH8010 and the congregationH6951 soughtH1875(QalImpf) unto it. [6] And SolomonH8010 went upH5927(HiphImpf) thither to the brasenH5178 altarH4196 beforeH6440 the Lord,H3068 which [was] at the tabernacleH168 of the congregation,H4150 and offeredH5927(HiphImpf) a thousandH505 burnt offeringsH5930 upon it. [7] In that nightH3915 did GodH430 appearH7200(NiphPerf) unto Solomon,H8010 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, AskH7592(QalImpv) what I shall giveH5414(QalImpf) thee. [8] And SolomonH8010 saidH559(QalImpf) unto God,H430 Thou hast shewedH6213(QalPerf) greatH1419 mercyH2617 unto DavidH1732 my father,H1 and hast made me to reignH4427(HiphPerf) in his stead. [9] Now, O LordH3068 God,H430 let thy promiseH1697 unto DavidH1732 my fatherH1 be established:H539(NiphImpf) for thou hast made me kingH4427(HiphPerf) over a peopleH5971 like the dustH6083 of the earthH776 in multitude.H7227 [10] GiveH5414(QalImpv) me now wisdomH2451 and knowledge,H4093 that I may go outH3318(QalImpf) and come inH935(QalImpf) beforeH6440 this people:H5971 for who can judgeH8199(QalImpf) this thy people,H5971 [that is so] great?H1419 [11] And GodH430 saidH559(QalImpf) to Solomon,H8010 Because this was in thine heart,H3824 and thou hast not askedH7592(QalPerf) riches,H6239 wealth,H5233 or honour,H3519 nor the lifeH5315 of thine enemies,H8130(QalActPtc) neither yet hast askedH7592(QalPerf) longH7227 life;H3117 but hast askedH7592(QalImpf) wisdomH2451 and knowledgeH4093 for thyself, that thou mayest judgeH8199(QalImpf) my people,H5971 over whom I have made thee king:H4427(HiphPerf) [12] WisdomH2451 and knowledgeH4093 [is] grantedH5414(QalPasPtc) unto thee; and I will giveH5414(QalImpf) thee riches,H6239 and wealth,H5233 and honour,H3519 such as none of the kingsH4428 have had that [have been] beforeH6440 thee, neither shall there any afterH310 thee have the like. [13] Then SolomonH8010 cameH935(QalImpf) [from his journey] to the high placeH1116 that [was] at GibeonH1391 to Jerusalem,H3389 from beforeH6440 the tabernacleH168 of the congregation,H4150 and reignedH4427(QalImpf) over Israel.H3478 [14] And SolomonH8010 gatheredH622(QalImpf) chariotsH7393 and horsemen:H6571 and he had a thousandH505 and fourH702 hundredH3967 chariots,H7393 and twelveH8147 thousandH505 horsemen,H6571 which he placedH3240(HiphImpf) in the chariotH7393 cities,H5892 and with the kingH4428 at Jerusalem.H3389 [15] And the kingH4428 madeH5414(QalImpf) silverH3701 and goldH2091 at JerusalemH3389 [as plenteous] as stones,H68 and cedar treesH730 madeH5414(QalPerf) he as the sycomore treesH8256 that [are] in the valeH8219 for abundance.H7230 [16] And SolomonH8010 had horsesH5483 broughtH4161 out of Egypt,H4714 and linen yarn:H4723 the king’sH4428 merchantsH5503(QalActPtc) receivedH3947(QalImpf) the linen yarnH4723 at a price.H4242 [17] And they fetched up,H5927(QalImpf) and brought forthH3318(HiphImpf) out of EgyptH4714 a chariotH4818 for sixH8337 hundredH3967 [shekels] of silver,H3701 and an horseH5483 for an hundredH3967 and fifty:H2572 and so brought they outH3318(HiphImpf) [horses] for all the kingsH4428 of the Hittites,H2850 and for the kingsH4428 of Syria,H758 by their means.H3027
